> What would you guys recommend for picking up more vocal pedagogy.
Teaching Kids to Sing (Kenneth Phillips) for vocal pedagogy. It breaks singing down into 5 component areas, each area broken down into 3 sub-categories, and then each subcategory has 6 subsequent levels for skill development. It's a spiral curriculum that revisits the 5 components of singing sequentially, and studying that text has been like night and day for my ability to teach choirs (I also have a purely instrumental background). It made me go from awkward uncertainty like, "Uhhh, okay... That was... good?... Maybe... Let's try singing it again... and, uh... maybe... can you make more of an 'ah' vowel...? I think... that will help?" to actually being able to give good instructions for making improvement like, "Good job, keep supporting the sound like that so that you can project your voice to the back of the room. Now, let's try it again but I want you to relax your jaw and let every vowel be more open. Actually go for two inches of space between your teeth when you sing the 'ah' vowel in Alleluia." You get the idea. It's a great textbook.
