I suggest Teaching to Transgess by bell hooks and the companion book Teaching Community.

The books are written by bell hooks, a renowned author and professor on feminism and black studies. So a lot of her wording is taken through that lens. But the message remains the same. It is a completely different take on how to view the classroom than any other pedagogy book I've ever read. I buy a copy for anyone I know who is going into teaching. I have the following from the book hanging above my desk.

“To educate as the practice of freedom is a way of teaching that anyone can learn. That learning process comes easiest to those of us who teach who also believe that there is an aspect of our vocation that is sacred; who believe that our work is not merely to share information but share in the intellectual growth of our students. To teach in a manner that respects and cares for the souls of our students is essential if we are to provide the necessary conditions where learning can most deeply and intimately begin.”
