It might help to think about what defines culture and history. Culture is usually defined as food, music, language, literature, and architecture.

Food

  • Just cook with her and explain the origins of the food. Someone once recommended this cookbook to me.

    Music

  • Try to impress old school with new school. I recently got into Nina Simone and I'm a little sad about this because I just realized this is what my grandmother has been humming to for decades. I think it's easy to look up old school singers, but some others that come to mind are Etta James, Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, Smokey Robinson, Otis Redding, Stevie Wonder, etc.

    Literature

  • It's scary easy to find black literature for black children age 13+ (e.g. Zora Neale Hurston, Maya Angelou, and other classics). For younger children, most things on a Google search will do and most involve a lot of history.

    Fashion

  • Black fashions shows are lit. Find one. Howard University has a Facebook page dedicated to how fly their students are.

    Language

  • When she's old enough, consider taking a class to learn a common African language like Swahili or Arabic.

    Architecture

  • Encyclopedias or tour books about various African countries can provide this.

    African-American History

  • There are dozens of museums dedicated to this cause. If you find yourself in need of inspiration, check out the museum of the Wright Museum in Detroit or National Museum of African American History and Culture in D.C. Both museums are very child friendly.

I also wanted to plug STEM because we need more black people in STEM. Definitely check out Raspberry Pi projects or Kano or the monthly stem box.

With my nieces and sisters, I found that physical representation was so important. I've been told often that I'm a good role model, but I also bought my niece a bunch of posters of black panther women kicking ass. I'm also fairly knowledgable myself, so whenever a learning opportunity presents itself or a misconception is brought up, I always swoop in, lol.
