You might like a novel called The Afterword, which takes this trend to a logical conclusion. Probably a little fluffy for your purposes but might be... uh... worth a footnote.
Also, if graphic novels aren't too pop-culture for your purposes, Alan Moore's From Hell is a mighty work of art and a mind-boggling work of annotation. (And some of his less highbrow comics have become kind of case studies in annotation themselves.) The texts annotate themselves but also exist in a world that practically requires readers to share their annotations with each other.
I think From Hell counts as 20th century, barely. The later stuff is... later.
