I recommend JN Chaney's The Amber Project. I picked it up the other day and read it in like 2 days or something ridiculous. It doesn't talk down to you and it actually involves real science, which most YA books ignore. The dystopian elements were really cool, and the female characters (and male) are all really strong and fleshed out. There's two main characters, each with a story throughout the book. One of them is a woman in her early forties, while the other is her son. You watch the son grow into an older teen, which is pretty interesting.

I heard the sequel is coming out in March. I'm gonna be all over it.
