My debut novel comes out in August.

I'd say the full process of writing took two years. Can't say where the inspiration came from . . . except to say that I finally had an idea for a story I was compelled to write. There was no planning, I wrote by the seat of my pants. Though I did have some crippling moments of doubt, I was rather inspired/motivated almost the whole way through.

My first draft was 120k words, and I edited that down to 100k (and I was blessed with someone who read it closely and gave great/critical feedback). Moving from 120k to 100k took many re-readings.

At this point I tried to find an agent (this website helped me the most: http://www.agentquery.com/). I edited my query letter as I went, and eventually got some requests for the full manuscript. After one too many rejections on the full, I went back to edit some more. My mistake? I hadn't killed my darlings. So, I went back and killed about 25k words worth of darlings -- this was difficult.

After this, I went back to querying and eventually secured a top-flight agent. After six agonizing months of trying to find a publisher, I got one.

On top of the book deal, my agent was able to get me an audio book deal and a film option. Description here.

It depends on the agent. Obviously I'm not an agent, but I have a soft spot for funny SciFi - like The Book of Ralph or, or course, The Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy.

Think funny (laughing with the story) vs ridiculous (laughing at the story). Think "Ice to meet you".

From the Amazon page:

A message appears on the moon. It is legible from Earth, and almost no one knows how it was created. Markus West leads the government’s investigation to find the creator.

The message is simple and familiar. But those three words, written in blazing crimson letters on the lunar surface, will foster the strangest revolution humankind has ever endured and make Markus West wish he was never involved.
