Reddit mentions of The Buildings of Charleston: A Guide to the City's Architecture

I grew up in Charleston, but live in Atlanta now. I have some recommendations for you:

• Lunch at Poe's on Sullivan's Island. Go early.
  
• Husk on Queen Street is one of the most exciting restaurants in America. I actually took art lessons in this building which was once the Gibbes Art Museum's art school. The art museum is also worth visiting. If cost is an issue for you, go to the tavern for a drink, or try it for lunch. Just fantastic.
  
• Drayton Hall is a must if you're an architecture freak. It was built in 1738, and is the oldest surviving example of Georgia Palladian architecture.
  
• Old South Carriage Tours is very high of the kitsch/cheese index, but certainly worth the price of admissions.
  
• Charleston is known as the Holy City because of all of its important and baeutiful churches. You can make a day of just visiting them, and most offer free tours.
  
• The Calhoun Mansion which is privately owned is just jaw-droppingly beautiful. They do tours.
  
• The Nathaniel Russell House is essentially across the street (but a few blocks north) from the Calhoun Mansion - also a treat if you like architecture.
  
• Honestly, if you're into architecture, you should buy and read this book before you go to visit - it has a place of honor on my bookshelf.
  
• Charlestown Landing is also worth a visit especially if you have kids. This is on the site of the original settlement.
  
• The Children's Museum is also worth visiting if you have kids.
  
• A little off the beaten path is Mepkin Abbey. It is a Trappist monestary in the aptly named (if not properly spelled) community of Moncks Corner and they live at Mepkin Plantation - also historically important.
  
• That's right down the street from Mulberry Plantation
  
• As long as we're talking about plantations, we can't leave out Magnolia Plantation or Boone Hall Plantation or the glorious Middleton Place.
  
  
  So that's a start. You could go back every week for a year and not run out of cool stuff to do.
