Calling them a group seems to diminish what they accomplished. They held Barcelona as an autonomous open city for a year until the Stalinists and Republicans betrayed them.

Here's the definitive three-volume history of the CNT during the war.

Hi. I apologize for not having replied much, much sooner. Haven't been to treknobabble for awhile. (Hope you get a chance to read this)

Fraga is just one out of many examples of what happened in Spain during the Spanish Revolution of 1936-1939. There are many books and youtube videos on the subject some of which mention the attempt to abolish money by the anarchists and syndicalist, who set up worker control over industry and agriculture. George Orwell wrote a first-hand account of his experiences during this period in his memoir Homage to Catalonia. http://www.reddit.com/r/AnarchistQuotes/comments/1s70h7/orwell_on_anarchism/

Orwell doesn't really explain how the anarcho-syndicalist economy works, though, he does give this little anecdote... "Tipping had been forbidden by law since the time of Primo de Rivera; almost my first experience was receiving a lecture from a hotel manager for trying to tip a lift-boy." George Orwell - Homage to Catalonia.

For a more comprehensive overview Sam Dolgoff's The Anarchist Collectives and Jose Peirats The CNT in the Spanish Revolution go into much greater detail. http://www.amazon.com/anarchist-collectives-self-management-Revolution-1936-1939/dp/0914156039/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1395875444&sr=1-1&keywords=the+anarchist+collectives

"Money has been abolished. Neither the standard currency in Spain (the peseta) nor local money is used in transactions within or between any of the collectives of the county or district." The Anarchist Collectives by Sam Dolgoff

"The distribution of foodstuffs and other items was handled by the cooperative and no money changed hands. The individual simply applied to the store for what they needed." The CNT in the Spanish Revolution by Jose Peirats
