A book I read called The Edge Effect outlines this, it talks about 4 neurotransmitters: dopamine, acetylcholine, GABA, and serotonin. The TLDR of it is just eat healthy, and particularly a good amount of protein as your body breaks it down into amino acids, many of which are precursors to neurotransmitters. Here's a link which details what a number of aminos do: http://www.getbig.com/articles/protein.htm

and here's the book if you're interested: http://www.amazon.com/Edge-Effect-Longevity-Balanced-Advantage/dp/1402722478/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1422131157&sr=8-1&keywords=edge+effect

I haven't listened to it completely, just a clip, which is this one:

When he mentions GABA, I went and got my book on neurotransmitters and brain health:

The book is old, so I don't know to recommend it, as I can only assume there have since been updates in the field since 2005. I see a lot of 'brain balance' books that might cover the same topics, more current. But the point is to research GABA for yourself, figure out if you are low in GABA or have some sort of malfunction with your brain or have a nutritional deficiency.

1st comes the thought
Then dwelling on the thought brings the feeling
Then dwelling on the feeling brings the action / symptom

Or your brain neurotransmitters could be off. If you have $10 and some time, this book is interesting and comes with a test.

There are at minimum 4 major neurotransmitters – Dopamine, Serotonin, GABA, Acetylcholine.

This book, while I can’t say for a fact is worth it for everyone – it explains a lot of the imbalance problems of not having the right amount of them causing different symptoms. IT is supposedly based on thousands of MRI’s. The 2nd and 3rd link are to the quiz in the book, so you can add up these based off the research to see where you may have too much or not enough. <book>I like how he tells you how to correct for them by food 1st, then supplements, then RX. The 4th link is just something interesting that may get people thinking about nootropic research.

Some things our brains are just predisposed to by imbalance - so hack your brain and/or control those thoughts as they grow. My 2c. I fix my problems by working 16 to 18hrs a day then sleeping all weekend so my brain gets some air. It was easier than reading the book, eating right, exercising, and taking 70$ a month in vitamins.

After reading the very excellent Edge Effect, I've been taking his recommended dopamine enhancement stack twice a day and it makes such a profound difference on my productivity! I only drink green tea no as well so I get the caffeine kick but also enjoy the effects of the l-theanine as well.

I've slightly adjusted mine but it consists of:
L-Tyrosine - 500 mg
L-Phenylalanine - 500 mg
L-Methionine - 500 mg
Vitamin B50 (with Rhodiola)
Vitamin C - 500 mg

For reference, I'm a (game) coder.
