Everyone will recommend Rajagopalchari coz they don't know any better. His version sounds pretty stilted and old fashioned.
The best abridged version I've read is The Great Golden Sacrifice of the Mahabharata by Maggi Lidchi Grassi
I've also heard good things about the new Bibek Debroy translation but haven't read it myself.
If you want a complete unabridged translation then read the Kisari Mohan Ganguli one, which is in the public domain
If you want an academic translation, the van Buitinen version is good but he died before he could complete it.
