Agreed. Note that this is not an issue with the short story version...and that Paper Menagerie is just generally outstanding.

If you like this story, it's in a collection of more short stories by the same author (Ken Liu) called The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories ( https://www.amazon.com/Paper-Menagerie-Other-Stories/dp/148142436X).

I highly recommend! It's not all sci-fi, but he's such a good storyteller.

The Paper Menagerie by Ken Liu is hands down the best book Ive ever read. Literally the first two pages had me tripping balls. It’s a collection of short stories/novellas that are kind of sci fi, some more than others, and a lot have their roots in Asian culture or history. The description makes it sound average but Ive never been so strongly affected by a book in my life. I can not recommend it highly enough.

This book? I heard good things about it, so it's been sitting on my shelf where I haven't touched it yet. At all. I'm just...no longer the avid reader I would've been, without easy access to the internet. (Reddit and fanfic don't count.) There's an sf anthology I've barely touched after hunting down a copy on ebay, where even the short story for which I bought it I left unfinished, and I tell myself I did so intentionally 'cause then in the future there'll be something waiting. Well sure, The Merchant and the Alchemist's Gate is good, but is it that good that I've got to savor more for later? And I could've been doling out a paragraph a day, rather than letting it sit. So on my to-do list there's that and Ken Liu's, and other works after. So many books unread. So many other things I fritter away my time on instead.

P.S. Sorry not sorry for the upvote. As someone with a poor grasp of project completion - this snippet of mine is from a manuscript several years old - I salute anyone who has the gumption to tackle nanowrimo even halfway through.

Be sure to report back on your progress!

Ted Chiang's Stories of Your Life and Others is great and includes the short story that The Arrival was based off of.

I keep seeing Ken Liu's name pop up everywhere and I've read The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories. I didn't like all of the short stories but The Paper Menagerie was definitely the best.

I also think Greg Egan's Axiomatic is worth reading too.

All of these books are categorized under science fiction.
