The Pentagon's New Map by Thomas Barnett.
Basically Barnett took a map of the world and started marking down all the places in the where there has been U.S. military intervention since the end of the cold war, he then drew a line around all those dots and decided to figure out what the deal was.
Broadly speaking, his conclusion is that the world can be divided into a "Functioning Core", which tends to all play by the same rules (globalization), and a "Non-integrating gap", countries that are cut off from the global community for one reason or another. He went around the defense department giving a powerpoint briefing on this and eventually wrote the book (and two follow-ups).
I've found that his book and the ideas he presents, namely the nexus between economy and security, made the most sense to me for how the world works geopolitically.
