I don't see anything in his explanation that excludes themes of duality. In fact, the theme of medicating to get rid oneself of their darker side is a necessarily dualistic interpretation.

As an aside, Patrick Brantlinger has a good argument for Strange Case being influenced by the desire of 19th century English elites to maintain cultural authority over the Irish and other "native savages." Pretty good stuff.
