This is the bible you are looking for: The Sceptics Annotated Bible

> I should clarify I'm looking for an actual physical book, not something downloadable/online.

I know this doesn't meet the criteria above, but I'm very very fond of using BibleGateway as it has about 150 different bible versions available. So you can look up a verse and then switch between versions for comparison purposes.

There is a print version of the Skeptic's Annotated Bible available on Amazon but it's hella expensive.

Popular Richard Dawkins books are The God Delusion and The Selfish Gene. I haven't read the Selfish Gene yet, but I have read the God Delusion, and it is a very good book. It may be a tad technical if you aren't well versed in science, but it's still very manageable.

The late Christopher Hitchens wrote a very famous book called God is not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything. Admittedly, I have not read this one either, but it's an atheist staple.

The Skeptic's Annotated Bible is next on my reading list (as you can tell, I have a HUGE reading list...), but also widely regarded as an amazing piece of literature for rational thinking.

I'm sure others can suggest more specific books, but these are the basics as far as I know.

Edit: Definitely forgot to mention that the Skeptic's Annotated Bible can be found online. I assume that this is in it's entirety?

Edit 2: Found this list on GoodReads.com. Seems to be another good resource for finding books :). Happy reading!

Probably not the answer you're looking for, but I recommend starting by simply just getting a really good annotated study Bible or two. Those are going to give you some great jumping off points as you get to various places, and you can start digging in libraries and online and even start up a discussion from there. Thing is, the Bible isn't merely one book. It's a collection of various works by different authors from different time periods, and you'll find that to this day there's still a lot of disagreement over who wrote what and when as well as which works should be included.

I guess if I had to recommend two other books that could get you started and are easy to understand, I'd go with these two, in order:

https://www.amazon.com/Absolute-Beginners-Guide-Bible-Head/dp/0789734192/

https://www.amazon.com/Misquoting-Jesus-Story-Behind-Changed-ebook/dp/B000SEGJF8/

These are by no means a final authority on just about anything in them, and there are a ton of great books out there, but again... This is just about getting you started.

Probably an unusual choice for a Christian, but I actually like the The Skeptic's Annotated Bible as a kind of companion to my annotated study Bibles. Unfortunately, my physical copy was lost in a move. It's a little condescending at times, in my opinion, but it's useful in giving an outside perspective, and I love that some of the notes give me something else to look into. For anyone who has fundamentalist views, this is of course going to be problematic, but I'm obviously not a fundamentalist.

I love myself some Dan Barker so I will be snagging that one for sure, thanks! I didn't want to dive deeper after writing the novel to kick off this discussion, but I want books on evolution too! My son loves 'The Cosmos' and 'Your Inner Fish' on Netflix, and he also wants to be an Astrophysicist (which will change), but headed down the right path! I guess to be fair I should let him watch Bibleman or something of the sort right?! =) Thanks for the book rec! Also - I'm hoping one is done for the Koran soon, but The Skeptics Bible is pretty good!
