I really like Theories of Development by Peet and Hartwick for a good overview of different methodologies of thinking about economics that is grounded in real world observation. It isn't a strict economic text but is well cited and provides lots of material for consideration and further reading. Its also written in a way that you don't need a massive background in different economic theories to approach the material.
If you want an outline of the history of economics with critiques of economic systems and how they have challenged democracy..
