Male dancer and teacher here. Leggings are okay, but should be worn with the top rolled down over a D-ring belt to hold them up.
As others have said, he should also wear a dance belt. Beige/nude colored is always best since it can be used under any color of tights. Thong-back is better than full-seat since full-seat shows visible lines.
If your budget allows, you should invest in some proper tights; I recommend M Stevens Milliskin since they look good, breathe well, and can last 10+ years with occasional mending.
While I'm at it, I also recommend a tight-fitting Uniqlo Airism shirt for ballet class. They stretch, breathe, and look good enough to wear to auditions.
