I have tried and tried to find a bag that allows both backpack-style carrying and easy access to all my Nikon gear, and I haven't found the perfect solution yet. I have yet to find a backpack that gives full compartment access from the side, which is what I really want. Sling bags would seem like a workable solution, but for pro-level gear it is my experience that the weight quickly becomes unbearable. I had a (now discontinued) Thinktank Sling-O-Matic 30 for a while, which has the full side access and space that I was looking for, but is ergonomically awful. [One reviewer did a backpack conversion of it though, which may be the closest thing to what I actually want.] (http://www.benjacobsenphoto.com/2010/gear/thinktank-sling-o-matic-video-review/)

Now my most used bag for my D800 is a Think Tank Urban Disguise 40 V2, and I would highly recommend it. It is a shoulder bag, but it can be quickly converted to a backpack with [these surprisingly comfortable should straps] (https://www.thinktankphoto.com/collections/urban-disguise-shoulder-bags-1/products/backpack-conversion-straps), and it offers the space, ease-of-access, and comfort that you're looking for.
