There's a bit of conflation going on here as I see it, three strands being twisted into one:

(1) Adam is successful

(2) He is an artist

(3) He is a internet persona

(1) Is he successful? In a way this depends how you measure it. He was casting about for a few years, doing caricatures to pay his rent, redditing to get exposure for his mildly successful toon/blog crossover thing, and spin off merch etc. I guess that didn't pay as well as he'd liked so he started working for buzzfeed. If you've seen any of the other regular contributors you'll realise the bar is about as high as the other kinds of content they produce, which is at a height that would challenge a limbo dancing ant. He simply stuck it out longer at the content farm and became a 'senior' by default. His gain is a wider audience for his spin off merch

(2) I won't deny he does make stuff which he has (at some point) drawn and coloured - however there is no spark of creation or passion in this stuff which consists of basically trying to make new relatable memes by copy and pasting his own stuff from his own stuff on a daily basis (something we can all do). It is the equivalent of any pre-internet syndicated letratone cartoon. Those guys paid the bills with their "Take my wife ... please"-desert island-missionaries and cannibals faire. And while they are representative of a certain time period they don't really speak about the human condition in any meaningful way as they simply coast the then zeitgeist.

(3) This last point is where being successful gets muddied. If he were successful commercially we'd already be going to Adam Ellis Land and going to see films drawn in his style. If he were artistically successful then more people would be trying to copy him seriously rather than to take the piss. I see him more a Mc Gonogal (in)famous for failing spectacularly at his chosen means of expression.

His DIY photobook about constructing hats for cats was/is really fun. Tiny Hats On Cats
