Ultrafire WF501b 900 lumen flashlight $11.51

Very bright and inexpensive. The stuff you'll find at target and home depot costs a lot more and is a lot dimmer.

It works with two 3V CR123A batteries, but you can also get an 18650 lithium battery + charger for cheap.

300 lumen flashlight with focusing lens

Uses 1 x AA. The most evenly lit and useful flashlight I own. I have several of them.

If you are trusting your life to it, I would put a bit more than $4 in a light.

I have kinda' given up on the long life thing and have started buying these in bulk.

Besides being super cheap, they are extremely bright and I have them scattered all around my life.

Cree Amazon special flashlight with 2xAA modification. Sacrificial modification flashlight here.

In grabbing the links, the light is now $3.33 shipped making the mod for two of the lights cost a total of $10.32 shipped.

I already replied to you in the "schematic" discussion about driver circuits, but I wanted to address your fancy case point as well. Because there's a lot that goes into flashlight bodies and its not just for show. Good flashlight bodies are tightly fitted and machined so they're waterproof and shock-resistant. They're made of a quality material that will stand up to lots of use. Plus they're anodized in a more expensive manner that'll last a lot longer, protecting your investment.

Then you've got the issue of the reflector quality. A cheap laminated-plastic reflector is going to soak up a lot more of your light instead of projecting it outwards. Same goes for a plastic lens instead of some sort of hardened glass. Those things all make the light demonstrably better but cost more.

Heat is also a concern, because high-output emitters generate a lot of heat and the body of the flashlight is the heat sink. If the body isn't massive enough to handle the heat, or your emitter board isn't properly mated to the body somehow to transfer it, you're going to have a problem. That glass lens also comes back into play here as well. An aluminum reflector and glass lens is going to handle all that heat much better than having plastic parts at that end. All those things go into determining how long the light will last.

One more point - good LEDs aren't very expensive. Here's an internet supplier for the Cree XM-L2, probably the most common emitter in high-end lights at the moment. You'd have to click through there a bit to get to prices, but I'll save you the trouble. They're about $7 each, but if you're willing to buy in bulk you can get them down to about $4 each. Buying them already mounted to a board about double the price, but I'm sure most flashlight manufacturers are buying them even cheaper than that. So the money in a high-end flashlight isn't in the LED. Its in the body and the driver circuit.

So here's an example: Here's a cheap $4 flashlight on Amazon. Those things are crazy popular because they're so cheap. And honestly its not a bad little light. Its got a Cree LED, not sure which one so I'm sure its something a bit cheaper than the XM-L2, but still not a bad emitter. And its just really cheaply made, so it won't last very long. Some people like that though. They'll buy them cheap and just replace it when it stops working. That's fine for some people, maybe even for you. I'd rather buy a quality light that'll last a long time, something I can trust to work when I need it to, and I'm willing to pay more for that.

Could be 100th down the line

Less than $3 Cad on Amazon to your door. Guy is making a crazy mark up.

If anyone has any specific safety related gear please post links! Also take all of my information with a grain of salt as I am still relatively new to this hobby but I am learning.

What I wear. What I take with me.

This is the flashlight I use. Highly recommended and super cheap. Brightest little flashlight I have ever used. I am sure there are better and brighter flashlights but for $4 you cannot go wrong.

These are the disposable gloves I take from work and use. I am definitely interested in getting some gloves specifically for diving. Does anyone have any good recommendations? I would like something that can be easily cleaned because I often find myself getting crap on my hands. Preferably not a cloth material.

I also wear jeans and any old shirt. I also just wear some old Nike's I have laying around. Not the best clothes but they work. I only get into the dumpster if there is something I can't reach from outside. There are obviously better clothes for doing this but what I use works as long as you don't plan on going in any dumpster that doesn't look safe. Yes I also realize you can never 100% be safe jumping into a dumpster but when I enter I do it very quietly and very slowly. I gently step on things to make sure I am not stepping on any nails/needles/sharp objects/etc.

Also, does anyone have any recommendations for a grabber? I like this idea for pure safety reasons. I avoid getting into dumpsters at all costs and would love an extra foot or two in length to reach stuff at times. Being a new dumpster diver I have not acquired one or even looked. I would obviously like something inexpensive but very strong.

Protection from others

I don't believe I need to protect myself when I go diving. I always have my pocket knife on me at all times however. I live in Johnson County, KS. Not too much crime to worry about and I tend to stick with well lit places. I wanted to try out Radio Shack the other night. I turned down behind the building to see that it was completely pitch black. I left immediately. I didn't feel comfortable and you shouldn't either. Never dive somewhere that you cannot be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Solo vs. group

I have only gone with my girlfriend and she mainly waits in the car. I would think diving with larger amounts of people would make you safer but also if you are with a large group you are probably a lot more threatening to some innocent stranger walking by. I know I wouldn't want to be by myself at 2 am and have a group of 5-6 people walk by me that I didn't know.

Hazardous materials

I haven't had a run in with any nails or sharp objects. I tend to be very careful going in and out of dumpsters. The worst things I have had happen to me is getting trash goo on myself. That is never fun.

Again, I am new and I might of went into too much detail but if anything I am trying to help someone else that is newer. I have been browsing my apartments dumpsters for weeks but have only recently started to go to box stores. Hopefully mine and others information can help someone else who is curious. Happy diving!

You definitely summed that up well. Most people haven't used small flashlights that are actually worthwhile. A lot of those cheap, small walmart lights with dying batteries that people dig up are a bit on the disappointing side. I'd guess this turns people off from EDCing a light because they expect they need a big beefy thing for it to be bright.

I used to have a Zefal multi-led bicycle headlight in my room. I thought it was great! ...up until I used a smaller, cheaper, and yet much brighter light from amazon (this one).

I agree, pocket clipped lights are my preferred choice. Keychain lights add a lot of bulk relative to the keychain. A pocket light takes up virtually no pocket space because it's clipped to the side and doesn't get mixed up with other things.

u/schmee · 6 pointsr/flashlight

It looks like it's just one of these style lights.

u/techieman33 · 6 pointsr/techtheatre

Buy some of these. The zoom is great, and they are bright enough with a AA battery. (I usually feed mine with used wireless mic batteries) With the lithium batteries, they are really bright, not 300 lumens, but bright enough for anything you'll do in a theater. At a couple dollars each they're disposable, your not going to cry when someone walks off with it, it falls out of your pocket, you lose it, whatever. The downsides are that they can suck batteries down pretty fast, and get warm if left on for a while. The quality control is pretty iffy, the fit and finish is all over the map, I bought 4 of them and they were all a little different on tolerances between pieces. There is a 3 mode version, but it's a little more expensive.

I hear what you are saying and I have owned every manner of high-powered flashlight to include Pelican, Surefire, Streamlight etc... These gems are the best money you will ever spend on a flashlight when you consider a dollar for dollar comparison. This link goes to the one that is prime, but if you are not in a hurry, you can order from one of the Hong Kong companies that ship direct and get them for under 4 bucks. They take one AA battery. Are they the best flashlight out there? No, but they are damn good for the price. Good luck. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006E0QAFY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 edit:spl

Fairly basic stuff that I carry every day. Nothing too unique or special.

Gun: Glock 19. I don't carry with the threaded barrel though. It's pointless. I just got it and was testing it out at the range over the weekend. Haven't had a chance to switch it back out. Loaded with 15 rounds of Winchester 9mm hollow points.

Holster: Comp-tac Minotaur Spartan. Basically the budget version of the MTAC. Amazingly good holster. The gun conceals well even with relatively tight fitting t-shirts.

Phone: Straight Talk Samsung Galaxy Proclaim. Can't beat the $45/month unlimited plan.

Belt: 5.11 Double Duty TDU Belt. It's nice and thick and distributes the weight of the gun very well.

Extra magazine and Pouch: Loaded with 15 rounds of FMJs. The holster is actually a Leatherman multi tool pouch. It fits the Glock 19 magazine perfectly. And it holds it horizontally, which makes it more discrete.

Flashlight: Cheap Chinese made flashlight off of amazon. Surprisingly decent quality for the price. It gets a lot of use over the past year (I work nights) and haven't had any issues with it. I'd suggest picking a couple up.

Knife: I don't have much info on this. Bought it at an army surplus store for $15 about 5 or 6 years ago and it's held up. I wouldn't buy an expensive knife because I'd probably end up losing it or be too worried about ruining it.

Keys: Car keys, house keys, gun cabinet key, flash drive (nothing important stored on it), and bottle opener.

Money Clip: I recently made the switch over from a wallet to a money clip. Very happy with that decision. I do a lot of driving and having a wallet in my back pocket started to hurt my back after long car rides. Its nice to have something so small to throw in your side pocket.

I hear good things. Crazy small.

I ordered 2 of these over a month ago and I'm starting to get pissed. At the time they were $3.50 a piece, so I'm not saying it wasn't worth the gamble, but I've definitely had plenty of other random orders come in on the slow boat from China much quicker.

If I don't wind up liking them after a few months I'll be snagging one of the E05's for sure.

Not sure if it's what you're looking for, but if you're only using it in your car, a Sipik SK68/Ultrafire Q5 is really cheap and fairly good for lightweight use.

u/jared213 · 3 pointsr/flashlight

I'll probably get down voted for this but I recommend this small Cree. It fits or clips on you pocket, is super bright for its size & price and has a slide focus which I love. I have one that is on/off and another that is high low strobe. Just make sure you get good 14500 batteries and good charger. The battery life on full brightness isn't very long but the 14500 batteries are the size of AA batteries so I don't notice them extra in my pocket.

u/linussy · 3 pointsr/CCW

Inexpensive? Here: http://www.amazon.com/Flashlight-Torch-Adjustable-Focus-Light/dp/B006E0QAFY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1419290128&sr=8-1&keywords=aa+flashlight

I'm a Paramedic that works night / early morning and thus get more usage out of a flashlight than the average person that spends all day in the office would, be it from car wrecks to an overdose in a dark closet. I use this flashlight. It's bright, takes just a single AA battery, and above all it's inexpensive.

The only downside I've had with this flashlight is that the clip can break after some time; of the two flashlights I've bought the clips have lasted about a year. Not bad for $3, AND the flashlight still works, just can't clip it without replacing the clip.

u/mcfarlie6996 · 3 pointsr/flashlight

My quick 2 cents. This zoomie might be perfect actually because it'll light up a good distance without any spill so it won't light up any windows. If you're actually interested, I can find you another link since this will take more than a week to ship across the ocean. Hell, I have an extra I'd be willing to ship to you for free. If your interested in something a little more durable, this Nitecore MT21A provides very good throw of 200 meters also with its XP-E2 LED vs the PD32 with only 154 meters.

u/ARbldr · 3 pointsr/Survival

Look on Amazon for Mini Cree and you will see a bunch like the linked light. I have one of these in a toolbox, they really are good little lights, small, handles AA or 14500 rechargeable batteries. Anyway, for sub $4 or less than $10 with prime or $10 for a pair prime, it is hard to beat this little light.

u/Kardolf · 3 pointsr/bugout

I'm not sure why you would have problems with your LED lights. I've been using exclusively LED lights for years now, and have nothing but success. I managed to break one (a Surefire), but they were quick to repair it for me.

Fenix, SureFire, UltraFire, Nitecore, Zebralight, Maratac and a number of no-name lights that I can think of off the top of my head. In my pocket right now is a Lumintop Tool AAA and a Nitecore Tube. Both have been daily carry for at least a year. I managed to kill one Tube by washing it three times, but as long as I remember to take it out of my pocket, it's been very reliable.

I have a handful of super-cheap UltraFire Zooming flashlights that just sit in backpacks, glove boxes, first aid kits all over the place, and they just work. It could be months between uses, although I try to remember to check batteries every six months.

u/tehspiah · 3 pointsr/airsoft

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006E0QAFY/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Great lights, very bright, with high, low, and strobe settings. Also, the lens focuses. Takes one AA, lasts pretty long. The only malfunctions happen when the battery gets low, sometimes it doesn't turn on. If you pull out the battery and put it back in it will light up though. Very sturdy case and stiff clip (will stay clipped to outside of pack very well.) Highly recommended, probably the best bang for the buck item in my gear.

u/grossRealist · 2 pointsr/flashlight

I just got the FordEx version of this for $6.49 with prime shipping (leaving town and couldn't wait). It's pretty nifty, seems brighter than my ~100lumen black diamond storm headlamp.

There are a bunch of versions, even just on amazon, so I'm not sure if FordEx is the best one but it seems to be the most popular. Mine only has one mode (high), not the high/low/strobe modes some reviewers mention. Seems to be luck of the draw which version you get.

I'm using a AA lithium but would be interested in which 18500 batteries and charger you recommend.

I would recommend this little thing. It has a focusing beam and can easily light up trees 100 yards out. I didn't believe it at first but it's the most insane bang for your buck out there. It takes cheap AA batteries and lasts for hours and hours. Your price range is insanely high unless if you are looking for a cop car style pillar light. http://www.amazon.com/UltraFire®-Flashlight-Torch-Adjustable-Focus/dp/B006E0QAFY

u/Facehammer · 2 pointsr/airsoft

This is a great taclight.

u/EphramRafael · 2 pointsr/flashlight

At that price range, there's not a lot out there. I would just grab one of these while you save for something a little more purpose-built.

This is also fairly cool. It would fit in your glove box and stand up in lantern mode if you needed an area light to change a tire. They're not "the best for the money" out there. Many would comment that you're wasting your money on them, but I've used one and they seem truthful in terms out output and battery life - and that's more than many lights out there can say.

Anything else, I'm going to need some more info to make a more educated guess on.

u/RumpleAndBelle · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I don't know if I just have bad luck or if it is the company who sells them but if you see This item on someone's wishlist I don't suggest buying it. A few months back it was bought from my wishlist for winning a contest, after two months it didn't arrive so I alerted the gifter so they could get their money back. I still wanted to item though so I re added it to my wishlist hoping to get one eventually.

Someone different bought me one (so #2 since #1 didn't show and yes the person go their money back for the first one). It was bought on the 20th of last month and I have a feeling it was lost again or the company never sent it. So if you gifted me the little flash light on Aug 20th it hasn't arrived I am sorry if you have been waiting for a thank you! You should message them to get your money back. (I don't know who gifted it).

I carry a bag/purse/murse/whatever to hold the stuff in the second pic.

From left to right

First photo:

1: 5$ amazon flashlight. For something this cheap and good, its a steal.

2: Trusty gerber knife. I know there is some gerber hate round these parts but I got this knife about 7 years ago and its still going strong. You can see that I get it sharpened and it sees its use. This is not an aesthetic designer piece. This is a "I cut shit up" piece.

Second Photo(contents of my man bag):

1: Kindle. 80 bucks, endless enjoyment. Ive read the entire Dresden Files series, and a couple dozen other books on this puppy. The side buttons really are a great feature.

2: Car/House/Store keys + Kingston Data Traveler 32gig Flash Drive Smaller than my pinky and its very durable due to the construction.

3: Some random hair gel I got from a beauty supply. Love the product tho. Cost me like 3 bucks.

4: Deodorant.

5: Suave Dry Shampoo. Very handy when your hair is all oily. Cheap as well.

6: Benadryl

7: Target Wallet. I actually lost one similar to it, drove to every target within 15 miles and none of them had it. Finally ordered it online. Yes I liked the design that much :)

8: Sunglasses Case

9: Kirkland Moist Flushable Wipes. These things a fucking great. Face oily? Wipes. Sweaty and feel icky? Wipes. In a bathroom somewhere and their tp is sandpaper? Wipes. srsly.

10: Sunglasses

11: Galaxy Nexus with extended battery + seido active case.

12: YSL Babydoll perfume: Smells great, and isnt overpowering.

13: My savior in a pill: Allergy Meds.

14: A microsoft branded grid-it like thing I got at a thrift store for a dollar. Currently holding a tube of itch ointment, a pen, hair bands, hair clips, tweezers, and lip balm.

Though not in the same class as the big-name lights mentioned by others in this thread, the little mini Cree lights are surprisingly decent and very inexpensive (under $10). You can find them all over (EBay, DealExtreme, Amazon, etc.). For example, here.

These little guys are reasonably bright, have a bubble lens to allow you to adjust between spill and throw, run off a single AA, and the construction is great for the price. I prefer the single-mode model, though the three-mode model is more common.

Again, this is not a Fenix, but the price and performance are great...

In the Trunk (these are items that will not come up often, but will be great just when you need them)

  • A thick Towel - in case you have to wipe down a window
  • A thick Blanket - because winter happens.
  • A roll of Paper Towels - for occasional spills in your car.
  • Jumper cables (the longer the better) - because you or your friend may need a jump.

In the glove box / driver compartment (these are items which will come up more often)

  • Tire pressure reader with a gauge that looks like this. (I don't care for the pen style)
  • Cigarette Lighter to USB Charger Adaptor - with a USB cord, will charge most cell phones.
  • LED flashlight. The more compact and power efficient the better.

    Aside from you car.

Work this set into your key ring. I purchased these in July and have found a dozen uses so far. (hope there is a UK set for you to purchase)

I'm not sure whether that's a good thing or a bad thing...

I'm glad you appreciated my rant. I hit the coffee pretty hard today.

You sound like you're on the right track. Screw around, learn. Don't be afraid to break stuff. These are decent, ultra-cheap lights. They work, and I don't have to worry too much about killing them.

u/isperfectlycromulent · 1 pointr/preppers

I have a few, but they're all at home so I don't most of the models of them. A cheap flimsy one came with the bag, and so I added one of these (I have like 5 of them), I just bought this set which I'm pretty happy with, and added one that I got at Home Depot that looks just like a solid rocket booster from a few years ago

u/Userdenied · 1 pointr/flashlight

I have this light in my EDC rotation and it's great. Only thing that is slightly inconvenient is the twisty head, but with a little practice it can be used one handed.

I also have the Nitecore EC1 in my rotation and I like it a lot as well. It's a little bigger but has more settings and a much nicer interface.

EDIT I haven't seen this suggested yet. If you want a good intro to higher end flashlights without breaking the bank try one of these. We use them at work as beater lights and they are amazing for the price. They are also a good way to cheaply demonstrate how all flashlights are not created equal.

Search for "battery vampire lights" for stuff meant to fully deplete used cells (not 18650, those would explode)

I was in search for a flashlight too recently. My friend who introduced me to airsoft recommended a flashlight that was surprisingly cheap but really worth the coin (tried the one he had). I just ordered one a few days ago. http://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B006E0QAFY/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1412215592&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40 . It has a focus feature that would help with range, high beam, low beam and strobe all in a package under $5 and free shipping. The only problem is that you would have to purchase a separate flashlight rail mount which shouldn't cost too much. Your grand total should be less than "airsoft" flashlights.

EDIT: You can check youtube for reviews and/or demos of the flashlight.

Just received my new flashlight today. It's a CREE. I don't know the model but this is it. It took over a month to get here though, but for the price it's worth the wait. I had a Chinese knockoff as my first one and it lasted over a year. Unfortunately the battery went in it and yeah, so I bought a new one. This time I'm hopefully going to figure out the right batteries for it.

You'll definitely be able to defend yourself with your back to him, while seated and with the door shut, good call.

Carry a flashlight and check before you enter the car.

$4, the size of a roll of Lifesavers, will last at least a couple years-

Haha, I bought like 2 boxes of [cheap flashlights] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006E0QAFY?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage) that looked just like that and gave them away like candy, stuffed them in a drawer, threw them in toolboxes, whatever. They work pretty well for an emergency light but aren't really bright

Still. Not bad for $3 apiece (at the time).

u/PatchworkSoul · 1 pointr/UrbexGear

You don't need a super expensive flashlight. Most of my explorer friends use the small Ultrafire Cree lights. They're cheap, reliable, and ridiculously bright for the size. Buy several of them and keep batteries with you.

Mag lites are dead. Cree flashlights with 14500 batteries will last longer, provide more light, and cost 1/100th the cost of what these used to sell for.

For example

u/derrick81787 · 1 pointr/Firearms

I got this first one basically to see what a $2.85 flashlight was like. I knew that it might not fit my needs, but it didn't cost much to find out. If I'm going to get 4 or 5 of them, then getting them at $2.85 a piece is way better than getting them at $20 a piece. In fact, I wouldn't get 4 or 5 at $20 a piece. I'd get one and then just stick with my incandescents as spares if that was my only choice. That said, I was surprised with its performance. I have no doubt that it is inferior to nicer lights, but we're talking about the difference between throwing the beam 75 or 100 yards for the cheap light as opposed to 200 yards or more for a nicer light. Neither is necessary for 99% of uses around the house. Battery life is probably better on the nicer lights too, but I recharge early and often anyway. It's kind of like my guns. I thought that I would try cheap and basic (okay, I don't do "cheap" on my guns, but I do basic), and then I'd only upgrade if there is a specific reason. So far I haven't run into much of a reason.

18650 batteries are cheap and popular, and as such the best lights seemed to run off of them. That's definitely the way to go if you are looking for sheer brightness or tons of options for a light, and will be what I get if I do get a nice one. It's also definitely the way to go if you are getting free batteries like me. Lights that run off of 14500 or a single AA battery are cool too though. At the same time that I got my cheap 18650 light, I also got a cheap SK68 clone (this style but a million different companies sell them). That's one of the few generic lights that actually gets recommended occasionally on /r/flashlight, but only when someone specifically asks for a dirt cheap light. That's cool because it can run off of a lithium ion battery or a AA battery if you want the option of running on alkalines. Of course, there are nicer non-generic lights that run off of the same battery combo.

Edit: Changed the Amazon link to what I believe is the exact one I bought instead of just a similar one.

u/KTR2 · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

I've had a bunch of Maglites, and I don't really like them. I've never owned one of their LED flashlights though, so maybe they're better. But, as far as I know, Maglites have always been more about durability than anything else. You can take it camping and maybe use it as a weapon...but If I were looking for a BIFL flashlight, I'd probably look at something from Fenix, or Zebralight. They both have GREAT reputations for quality amongst the flashlight geeks, and I've come to learn that reputations like that tend to be well-earned.

Currently I carry one of these. It's not what I'd consider BIFL-quality, but it's got a decent little LED in it and it's only $4. I use it every day, and have carried it for over a year...the lens cracked slightly after I dropped it onto some concrete (about 5' drop), but it still works better than any Maglight I've ever owner (again, non-LED).

u/shoangore · 1 pointr/Nerf

I took a dremel tool and hacked out a space large enough to nestle the flashlight in. I ordered this light in bulk, but you can buy them off Amazon very very cheaply right here!

To power it up, I rigged up some wires to create an external battery (CR123's fit inside of standard glue stick bottles) that was triggered by a computer switch plug from RadioShack. This I built into the left side of the Rayven.
After that it's just a matter of gluing everything in tightly enough that it's solid.

Main issue is that on maximum flood, the light reflects the barrel's tip, so you're pretty much a beacon of light. Granted, if you have the light on anyways, people are definitely going to see you.

The flashlight is primarily used for 1.5V AA's but the CR123 is a 3V battery. It can definitely take the increased voltage, and you'll be pleasantly surprised at how bright a sub-$4 flashlight can get.

Under $4, light, small, pretty powerful for a little AA light. Bought some recently to stash around the house and the kids love them. My son loves the strobe mode on the 3-mode version, but be aware that the 3-mode remembers the next function, depending on the light you get. The last time I tried going camping, /u/pwolter0 and I had to leave in the middle of the night. We'd been keeping an eye on the weather because there had been some bad storms going through Ohio at the time. We had fun exploring throughout the day but, once we checked the weather again, there was a huge nasty storm headed our way. It's a good thing we left when we did because there was a tornado that popped up nearby the campsite and the next day we found out that the whole place flooded. Our tent happened to have been downhill. :P We haven't been camping since but I LOVE camping.

That Fenix looks nice, but I preferred to not have a battery pack separate from the light. I shouldn't have said "only brand," since that was incorrect.

I like the construction of the attached mount on the L&M, the fact that it has a slow strobe mode, and a purpose-designed beam pattern. Rechargeability, and a reflector that redirects some light out either side through amber lenses is another great feature for increased angle of visibility.

I've got my non-bike lights covered, among my Mag 3D with floodlight led drop-in, this little guy and a couple of lights in between.

u/JasonAgnos · 1 pointr/bugout

I haven't started my search for the ultimate flashlight yet, and have only used cheap stuff for the last five years.

With that said, I have a set of mini mag lights between my backpack and car that still work, several years into their latest AA battery charge. They're not particularly bright and don't measure up to LEDs in a lot of ways, but the shell is built to last forever and they virtually never need more than a battery change and quick wipe down of the innards.

As far as inexpensive LED lights, I picked up a few of these Ultrafire Cree lights to use in the interim, until I shift my focus for a real torch. They're absolutely great, and make perfect stocking stuffers or backup lights for anyone. I carry one of these every day, and it's part of the reason I keep putting off getting a "nice" one - these cover the bases very well, they hardly need an upgrade.

Move swiftly, carry a bright light.

I do a lot of walking in less safe neighbourhoods. But they're not so unsafe that I feel like I'm at risk every day. I just have a very intense fear of the dark. Safety is always relative.

  • Don't carry a weapon you can't handle. Don't go buy pepper spray or mace or a knife or a gun. You don't sound like you're confident with them. If you really want one, learn to use one first.
  • The only way to win a fight is to avoid it in the first place.
  • If you're walking, carry a strong flashlight. There's a good one on Amazon.ca/.com for a few dollars (http://www.amazon.ca/300lm-Flashlight-Torch-Adjustable-Focus/dp/B006E0QAFY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1410499041&sr=8-1&keywords=flashlight). Buy some li-on batteries for it. Turn it on briefly; you don't want people to know what you're looking at. If you feel threatened, flash in their eyes and run.
  • Be resourceful, be cautious. Always have a plan, and have backups in case you panic. In many cities you will have arterial roads and many feeder roads that connect, know which ones are good to dive into and which ones lead to dead ends.
  • Know bad neighbourhoods, and the signs to spot them; dealers love parks. The rich and do-gooders don't abandon shopping carts. Students often seek out quiet areas for adventurous sex. Know what local wildlife sound like; it might be silly, but you never know when you're going to run into a coyote or turkey trying to cross the road, or get scared to death because a rabbit leaped into the bush next to you.
  • It's up to you whether to ride on backroads, where you'll be totally alone, or arterials, where you'll run into all kinds of people. I take the latter, because I am deathly afraid of the dark. I would rather risk the 0.0001% chance of a drunk driver going on a 2-lane 50km/h street than be alone on a dark and unlit path.
  • Don't stop for any reason, unless you're out on a road that you feel is safe (my rule is 2-lane or more, well lit, and either absolutely nobody around or plenty of diverse people around, or I know the neighbourhood is "safe").
  • Obey traffic laws. This is where people with actual 'hood experience will be more help. Where I ride, it's unlikely I get mugged; it is more to keep me calm. If you're worried about being attacked, ride closer to the middle of the road. If you're worried about being hit, ride on the rightmost lane without parked cars, in the middle of the lane.
  • Have lights on your bike. I'm not sure whether brighter is better. I like to think so.
  • Don't stop to help people. It's cruel but if you feel bad, report it from a distance. Your job is to get home safe, not help strangers.
  • All weapons can and will be used against you. If you spot someone, don't panic, just keep moving. If you have to dismount (or stop if you're walking) you're past a point of no return. Be prepared to fend for yourself; sometimes it's better to try and make a break for it, because you could easily get swarmed if it's a really bad neighbourhood.
  • Tactical flashlights are your friend: like I said, quickly flash in their eyes, keep it going while you pedal off. Bright headlights can also be used that way. Those metal braces on flashlights aren't useful; if you have to use violence, you're going to be outgunned, because thugs spend all their lives doing this.
  • You're a cyclist. You're not invincible, but you have strong legs. For a last resort against one or two assailants, kick in their legs from the sides.
  • A u-lock is a dangerous weapon.
  • Always flee.

    Most importantly:

Humans are the weak point in any security plan. This cuts both ways: it's humans that will make you feel safest. Pay attention to potential friends during the day time. People who will see you coming and going. Build a pattern and a rapport, and they'll notice you.

If you're concerned about being predictable, have two routes, alternate at random between the two. Just flip a coin and go with that one.
u/cubenori · 1 pointr/flashlight

I just started looking for a flashlight too.. so I'm not entirely sure what's what. But there's this thing. Cree seems to be a legit LED manufacturer, but I'm not entirely certain about the quality of the flashlights. Hopefully someone more experienced could explain it.

Super cheap, shit QC but I order maybe 5 and get 2-3 good ones, they're pretty good cheap carry lights. The single mode On/Off ones are the best to mount (you'd have to find a seller that sells em), Though it needs a little fitting on Offset mounts.
