I know exactly what you're talking about. Depending on how I feel and how much time I have to sleep I alternate between zzzquil (basically benadryl) and melatonin gummies. Personally I don't sleep through the night with melatonin and I also have terrible dreams. I've talked to several other people who report similar effects. My melatonin gummies are about 2.5mg a piece and I only take one.

One thing I've done recently that has dramatically improved my sleep is I started taking ZMA supplements. You can't take it close to dairy or other food high in calcium and it's best to take on an empty stomach. I've always had issues with fatigue after sleeping an appropriate amount and my fitbit sleep tracking feature has always shown that my sleep quality isn't the best, but now I don't have problems with fatigue like I did and using the same tracker my sleep quality is a lot better now. I take it within an hour of when I want to go to bed and I find I can fall asleep within 30 min or so.

Overall you'll have to find the best thing for you, but if you haven't tried a ZMA supplement yet I would try that.
