Unsung Eagles. It's a great read. I highly recommend it.
>"The Germans were flying some P-47s that had bellied in and that they managed to rebuild. These P-47s had black German crosses on the top of the wings and American markings on the bottom. They used them to strafe our troops which caused a lot of bad blood. Our troops thought we were doing it to them. They caused so much trouble that Eisenhower sent some of his staff out to make peace and he even visited some of the bases personally, including ours, to smooth things over. Finally one of the renegade P-47s got shot down with a German pilot in full uniform. The Stars and Stripes carried the story and from then on feelings improved between the G.I.s and us."
From Chapter 10, Crushing the Reich: Howard "Jack" Dentz
I'm actually working on a skin for this now.
