Yes the camera kit style connectors can do this for simple scenarios and some devices. You don't mention all your needs but almost certainly you'll outgrow it. You need it, but it's not enough except for trivial things.

Some USB hubs do work well. The problem is sorting through all the no brand crap. This one has worked well for an iPad Pro 2018 for about 6 weeks so far. It has two USB-C ports and USB 3.0 ports:

Note it supports PD power delivery and 87 watts. You can't expect any hub to power much with a 5-15 watt adapter. So you would need this hub, AND a decent wall plug in PD compatible USB-C adapter. The hub is only $30 so ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

Separately, this little device only gives you one extra port for power, but it comes in handy for home or simple use as a slick compact way to expand just a little:
