Looks like he is just using something like this here to power it. Maybe his just holds more batteries though for longer battery life?
After looking into it a bit it looks like a standard AA battery is around 2000-3000mah (every brand and type will differ) so say you have 8 AA batteries hooked in parallel you would have something close to 20,000mah of power at ~1.5V.

New batteries would give you 12v, which might drop as low as 9.6v during discharge... the lighthouses might be more voltage sensitive than that.
