Alfred P. Smyth's "Warlords And Holy Men" (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Warlords-Holy-Men-Scotland-D-80-1000/dp/0748601007) is probably a little out of date now, but I read it at University and found it the best source on Kenneth MacAlpin and his formation of a unified kingdom of sorts.
