"What Remains of Heroes" by David Benem is by far the best self published (and debut) novel that I've read. It's a finalist in Mark Lawrence's Self Published Fantasy Blog Off (SPFBO), and it's currently one of the highest rated by the contest's bloggers. Outstanding characters, well crafted world building, engaging story, and superb writing. You can't go wrong with this one. Also, if you'd rather listen than read, it's available on audiobook as well.
