I'm sorry the OP had that experience. What's wrong with some men?
Yes, play it safe, stick to trafficked roads, but it's not "Escape from New York" out there.
I've lived and worked in Baltimore for over 24 years and have never been attacked, assaulted, etc. I walk a big loop everyday from North Avenue to downtown and never have had a problem. Although, I am a man, which makes it different, I walked the same loop with a female friend, many days she walked without me, and she has never had a problem. Our loop is not far from where the OP walked.
You can't compare Baltimore to cities like New York City or Pittsburgh. Our racial makeup is completely different than those two cities. New York and Pittsburgh have a relatively small black populations when compared to Baltimore. New York City only has 17 percent black population, Pittsburgh 26 percent. You can compare us to New Orleans and Detroit. All have an over 65 percent black population. Economically we are similar too.
Why does this matter?
The divestment in these three cities due to white flight, redlining, institutionalize racism was devastating over the last 50 years. These cities went (and are still going through) a lot more shit than those cities. (good reads: Carol Anderson "White Rage", authors TaNahisi Coates, D. Watkins, these last two are Baltimoreans)
I don't know this for sure, and would have to research, I believe New York City was very successful and probably ruthless at keeping blacks out of the city. That's some fucked up shit, a huge city like that, and only 17 percent.
Sorry. That's my rant.
Edit: NYC has 25% black population. So it's not a chocolate city like Baltimore, New Orleans, D.C., and Detroit.
