Actually, DisplayPort can carry multi-channel audio, so therefore DP Alt Mode can be used to output audio out to the monitor's speakers, in the absence of a USB Audio DAC on the monitor.

The one significant disadvantage this has over USB audio is that it is one-directional only. You can use this as an output.

When I want to use my setup at home on a conference call, I always plug in a USB-C set of headphones with a mic (ie, a USB sound card with in and out).
