You wanna be the best fiance ever u/vickicamfield?

Get him one of these.

His neck will thank you, his hands will thank you, his precision will thank you. Probably the best purchase I've ever made for minis. You can snag em at most hobby shops.

Bonus, if he wants to do detail work I recommend a cheap set of reading glasses. He won't have to strain his eyes as much and they are a nice magnifying glass....es... you get the point lol.

PS: I recommend bright white light for better color recognition and more akin to natural light.

Edit: Also if he is thinning with water, get this. I find it works better than water and mixes with metallics!

Edit 2: For brush care, dont forget to get some brush cleaner and conditioner. Maybe a wet palette for longer paint sessions. For brushes, winsor and newton are always a solid choice.

Edit 3: Folks are asking for essentials. Here is a short list:Vallejo thinner
Masters brush conditioner
Wet palette
Kolinsky brushes
Mini holder
Liquid cement for plastics
Vallejo paints
Citadel paints
Warhammer TV
Cheap airbrush for prime/basecoat

I prefer Gorilla Super Glue (Make sure it's Blue cap).

Brushes: Best Brush IMO : Windsor & Newton Series 7. Size 0, 1, and/or 2. Pick up Two, one for metallic paints and one for regular paints. I would also go to a hobby shop and get a cheap bag of assorted brushes for Drybrushing, Washing, and Glue spreading. Don't use good brushes for Drybrushing etc, it messes up the bristles.

Pick up some Elmers School glue for basing.

Xacto Knife like dm33186 said.

Paints... There are so many. I like p3 paints (they sell paint sets for your faction even) and GW washes. Gale Force 9 basing supplies.

You may also want Green stuff if your models are metal, as there will be gaps you might want to fill/sculpt terrain on bases, etc.

DON'T FORGET PRIMER: Army Painter or Krylon black or white (depending if you want them to have a dark/light color scheme)is my preferred choices.

Also, Don't forget to wash them with hand soap + old/cheap tooth brush and water. This cleanses the model of mold release powders, etc. (I normally wash all the parts, let dry, glue model together, then I prime. After all that you are ready to paint.)

Yeah, I think that's your culprit then. Treat yourself and get one of these:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0013E68T4/ref=twister_B01BSAQVXK?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

And I recommend this for brush cleaning and care:
https://www.amazon.com/Masters-Cleaner-Preserver-Ounces-Carded/dp/B0027AEANE/ref=pd_sim_201_1?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B0027AEANE&pd_rd_r=H8HTM973388HWYA2NJ1T&pd_rd_w=J2Aws&pd_rd_wg=dkPOe&psc=1&refRID=H8HTM973388HWYA2NJ1T

These days, I'm a firm believer that you'll do a better job with a good brush and cheap paint than you would with premium paint and an average brush.

u/Serneum · 5 pointsr/zombicide

Reaper makes Learn to Paint kits. I've used them to reinforce some of what I've learned at local painting meetups and I've liked them. I ended up grabbing a large Army Painter paint set and then had a wet palette and a Winsor & Newton brush recommended to me from a Zombicide painting group. They also pointed me to a head-mounted light/magnifying glass and some brush soap.

u/Route66_LANparty · 5 pointsr/Warhammer

Use the Citadel Paint App to see how many, and what colors your chosen color scheme needs.

For example the paint app has 23 different colors to achieve the box art for the Lord of Contagion using the layering/edge highlighting style of painting. https://www.games-workshop.com/resources/catalog/product/920x950/60010199015_40KDarkImperiumENG12.jpg

That's about $100 in acrylic paints and shades for that Death Guard paint scheme. Over an entire Army though you will likely need at least half a dozen more paints ($25) to also do some specially paints like Nurgle's Rot or base textures.

Add in $20 for the Death Guard Spray Primer. And another $5 each for some generic white, black and grey Spray primers.

Now to start a decent brush collection. For you quality workhorses 2 or 3 Winsor and Newton Series 7 Kolinsky brushes. (Size #2, #1 and #0) Around $15-$20 each you are looking at $30-$50 https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0013E68T4/ (Alternatively you can buy the Citadel Artificer set for around $25 a brush if you prefer a plastic handle to a wood one.)

You'll also want a bag of cheap brushes from any crafting store or Walmart for $5-10 for misc tasks that would be very damaging to your nice brushes... Like drybrushing or cleaning up big mistakes.

Don't forget to maintain those nice brushes with the Masters Soap and conditioner. $10 -
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0009RRT9Y/

So in the end you are looking at close to $200+ in supplies to paint similar to box art... Not to mention lots of watching YouTube vids to learn.

If just starting out and you happen to want to paint Death Guard... Start with Poxwalkers. They are very forgiving as you can just add extra brown waah, blood and Nurgle's rot to hide early mistakes as you are learning... While still getting great looking models.

.........

This is why most people start painting with simpler sets of paint and grow their collection over time. Or start with cheaper paints and brushes and grow into using nicee stuff as their skills develop. If you have a particular model or army you are looking to paint. Folks here or at /r/minipainting can recommend exact cheaper paints, brushes and techniques to start with.

u/SuicidalKirby · 5 pointsr/minipainting

No airbrush 0/10 setup. :P

But I do see you have a discerning taste in reaper miniatures. I just painted of those guys myself.

One thing I would recommend strongly though is a good brush. I actually have that same set of brushes from hobby lobby and they are kinda garbage. Do yourself a favor and get a Windsor and Newton series 7 size #1. You can get one on amazon for about $13 link. It will be a world of difference.

Another good purchase is a wet palette, but far from necessary. Just keeps the paint from drying out too fast and wasting it. You can also make your own pretty easily if you are inclined. Oh, and a hobby knife like others said. Reapers have some pretty heavy mold lines, and you'll definitely need something to take care of those.

Assuming that's Winsor & Newton Series 7 Kolinsky Sables? https://www.amazon.com/Winsor-Newton-Kolinsky-Sable-Watercolor/dp/B0013E68T4?th=1

u/enterdragon91 · 3 pointsr/minipainting

nah it's mine is the 1, and I meant how much detail I could get with it.

u/wcfore01 · 3 pointsr/minipainting

IMHO the #1 thing you need is a good brush

Can you give me some more detail on what exactly he has paint wise?
EDIT: Actually just tell me everything he has lol

u/regimental · 3 pointsr/Warhammer40k

I can't stand any of my GW brushes. Recently got some Winsor Newton series 7. The difference is night and day. I can do small details with a size 1 ( M layer brush in GW speak ). I also picked up some cheap synthetic, Foundation series, Winsor newtons from WH Smiths for £4. Even they are better than the GW brushes.

Winsor Newton series 7

Click the link above buy one in size 1 and one in size 0, thank me later ;).

On a side note the best thing I bought recently for painting is a pair of these
Magnifying Glasses. Now I can actually see where the end of my paint brush is going!

u/Vexinator · 2 pointsr/minipainting

If you are Canadian, a UK company called "The Society for All Artists (UK)" is selling a few W&N Series 7 Kolinskies on Amazon.ca for even less right now. I actually was looking at both sites earlier today and bought a size 1 and size 0 from amazon.

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B000OL5L7C/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0013E68T4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The size 0 is from the miniature line, the size 1 is from the normal watercolor line. $11.50 and $17.09 respectively. With free shipping and exchange rate factored in, this was a better deal.

u/redpiano · 2 pointsr/minipainting

If price isn't a factor I would recommend picking up either the Scale75 complete collection or the Vallejo Model Color suitcase.

Scale Color Collection

Vallejo Model Color

If you buy from Fantization, just FYI email them first and ask if it'll get to you by Christmas.

Also, pick her up a Winsor & Newton Series 7 #1 and #2/0

Fun topic!

Lots of good responses already - I'll chip in:

If you're craftsy/good with a brush and kind of know what you're doing, scenery is definitely a cool idea. You could purchase some for him as well, since there is "no wrong answer" when it comes to scenery. These guys have the best selection of MDF scenery (looks good, lots of bang for your buck vs. the fancy plastic stuff) I have seen: https://ttcombat.com/

Otherwise-

If you know his army/colors - something unique to it would be cool. Some things gamers need: tape measures, dice, stuff to write in. For instance, a really nice tape measure https://www.amazon.com/Measuring-Tape-16ft-Retractable-Construction/dp/B07529JM1V/ref=sr_1_23_sspa?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1509721900&sr=1-23-spons&keywords=tape+measure&psc=1

Maybe some wild custom dice: https://www.thegamecrafter.com/custom-dice

If he's relatively new to the hobby you could get him some paints he doesn't have (or a big set, if you you've got buck)

Some new brushes - depending on the skill level he's at, good brushes can be fairly pricy - here's my favorite: https://www.amazon.com/Winsor-Newton-Kolinsky-Sable-Watercolor/dp/B0013E68T4

Toss in some brush preserver if he doesn't have any.

A lot of these things are stuff he might already have, but better versions he might not generally bother to get for himself, which is a cool present.

u/Businfu · 2 pointsr/Warhammer40k

Yeah I think Fire Dragon Bright (somewhat sparingly) will really push the areas you want to accent. Maybe I was imagining the WHTV tutorial, but I did find this one which I think would be quite helpful. Obviously this guy is painting to a really high standard so don't beat yourself up, but I think it's helpful to see how the firedragon bright/kislev flesh are used. Note that his process is mephiston>evil sunz>fire dragon>kislev flesh. So yeah, super involved and it gives you an idea of how much subtle effort can go into a really good paint job. He says it in the vid but I'll say it here too: don't be afraid to go back and 'correct' highlights with the base color.

EDIT RE: your brush question -- generally you want to use the BIGGEST brush you can get away with using for the job, because a bigger brush will be able to hold more moisture and keep the paint thinner and more consistent. What makes a good brush isn't how small it is, but how fine a point the tip comes to. If you can get your M layer to form a fine tip, then use it. Personally I use a size 1 Windsor & Newton Series 7 for almost all fine detail, which I'm pretty sure is a good deal larger than the M layer.

u/RynoKenny · 1 pointr/minipainting

SO I noticed the link in the Buyers Guide on this sub is to the Winsor Watercolor brush. Am I missing something? I want to know if the brush I purchased isn't correct. Thank you for any help.

u/D33TR · 1 pointr/KingdomDeath

For brushes the main thing you're looking for is its ability to maintain a fine tip. Some people do 90% of their model with a size 3, while others use a size 1. I personally prefer a #2 with a #1 for finer detail work.

Vallejo Game Colour or Model Colour sets are a great place to start, depending on your preference. You can read more on the differences between the two here.

For washes I would recommend just starting with Citadel's Nuln Oil, and Reikland Fleshshade for all the skin tones you plan to do.

I would also highly recommend checking out Miniac on YouTube, he has a lot of great painting tutorials and he breaks it down step by step in short, easily digestible videos.

Good luck!

u/boomshrub · 1 pointr/minipainting

I use this for most of my painting. It has a very fine point so it can double as your fine detail and medium brush until you can afford more. Feel free to go with a cheaper brand though but consider these if you want an upgrade. Just avoid the ultra cheap brands, you can get sets for like £2 but they are trash.

Personally I dont recommend the GW brushes but others have. They are not the worse purchase as their products are generally high quality although expensive.

This is the brush cleaner most people use and it is wonderful.

u/BoddynockBeren · 1 pointr/minipainting

In general, as far as nicer sable brushes go, most people tend to recommend Windsor & Newton Series 7 and Raphael 8404. Typically they come as single brushes, though I think they have sets if you were so inclined. There are a few other brands too, like Broken Toad or Da Vinci.

From what I've read, Citadel's Artificer brushes are just rebranded Windsor & Newton Series 7 that are sized to Citadel's custom sizes (XS, S, M instead of the standard numbered sizes). So you end up paying more for the same thing, but they are certainly nice brushes if GW is your thing.

For synthetic brushes, the popular suggestion is the Princeton Select Artiste brushes.

Took out any affiliate/referral parts of the Amazon links in case you wanted to use them to buy.

Additionally, Miniac has a good video where he reviews a handful of popular brushes: https://youtu.be/DbCBdEjrFj8

No idea why the buying guide got removed, though. It was a little subjective so maybe that's why? I hope at least another one gets put back up.

u/StompyJones · 1 pointr/Warhammer40k

Series 7 breaks down into regular brushes and Miniature brushes. Miniature ones will say 'Miniature' on it and they're all far fatter shaped than regular watercolour ones.

See miniature versus non-miniature

u/BaronVonMilk · 1 pointr/Warhammer

I've been strongly recommended to pick up a couple of Windsor and Newton Series 7 brushes to start painting with instead of the Citadel Brushes. I'm looking at them on amazon, and there's two different kinds: Series 7 Miniature and Series 7 Watercolour. I can guess from the name which version I need, but I just wanted to check before purchasing them.

Miniature

Watercolour

u/Heathen92 · 1 pointr/minipainting

Just FYI but if you look on amazon Windsor and Newton series 7's are around $10.

They seem to have come up a bit in price over the holiday season but should be back down again soon. As others have said you can find some decent cheap brushes while you get used to painting but I wouldn't bother waiting too long before switching to the 7's. They're extremely resilient if you're caring for them appropriately. Make sure to pick up the brush cleaner/preserver from the buying guide and not to get any paint into the ferrule (the metal clasp holding the bristles) and your brush will stand up pretty well. I've been doing 90% of my painting with two #2's, a 0 and a 000 and after about 100 minis they're just as good as new.

u/Borken2 · 1 pointr/MiddleEarthMiniatures

Definitely not a cheap alternative, but for a long lasting and high quality alternative I would always recommend Winsor & Newton Series 7 brushes. The size 1 is a good all rounder, and the brush I use the most. It strikes a good balance of being thin enough to do details, but large enough so the paint doesn't dry out on the tip straight away.

You could likely do everything you want to do with just a size 1 W&N brush, and one other cheaper, bigger brush for basing (for example the citadel large base brush).

Raphael also make good brushes, but I find the belly of the bristles to be a bit too fat for my liking.

If you are going to buy a more expensive brush, I also recommend picking up some brush cleaner. It really helps to extend the life of your brushes.

u/Kremak · 1 pointr/minipainting

One of the best purchases I have made in the painting arena has been my Winsor & Newton series 7 size 1 sable brush. Just make sure it is the standard one, not the miniature one as it will be way too small. It is large enough to hold a good amount of paint, good for large details (I would not use it for base coating large areas), and holds a very fine point great for small detail and I even use it for the fine edge highlighting. here is an amazon link for your information:

As for brush care pick up some masters brush cleaner and google a video for it, I do not have a specific one to share.
