A few suggestions, based on what my daughter enjoys:

  • For reading aloud, the classic is Wir Kinder aus Bullerbü (it's originally in Swedish, but it's a massive hit in Germany, as are the rest of Astrid Lindgren's stories). If you're looking for a more modern take on a similar concept, I can highly recommend Wir Kinder aus dem Möwenweg - instead of being about a group of children growing up in a tiny village in early 20th century rural Sweden, it's about a group of children growing up in a modern terrace housing estate, but it's no less charming.
  • Wir sind nachher wieder da, wir müssen kurz nach Afrika is an utterly charming book for reading aloud, about two children who imagine that an elephant needs their help in finding his way home to Africa. We've read it several dozen times already, at least.
  • The Was Ist Was books and audio books are immensely popular in Germany, and for good reason. They explain the world really well for children ("Was ist Was Junior" is for 2-4 year olds, "Was ist Was" is for 4-8 year olds), so pick out a book on a topic she enjoys.
  • The Schnüpperle books (there are several - this is just one) have not dated as well as Astrid Lindgren (IMHO), but my daughter really likes them nonetheless, and they are a classic.
  • Conni is a massive empire of children's books, audio books, and TV shows, with different series for different ages. Depending on your daughter, she may be a touch too old for the Conni-3 stories, but will probably start enjoying the Conni-6 stories soon.
  • Janosch's stories and characters are everywhere in Germany; although your daughter may be getting a little old for the classics like Oh Wie Schön Ist Panama.
  • If she is into anthropomorphic animals (which aren't quite as common as in British children's literature, for example), then I can recommend the Eliot und Isabella books (and audio books), about a city rat and a country rat going on adventures.
  • If she's into fairy tales (and fairies, unicorns, mermaids etc), then I can recommend the Maluna Mondschein books (and audio books), slightly irreverent and very self-aware stories about mythical beings in an enchanted forest.
