Pelican waterproof laptop and gun cases. Heavy, pricey...but waterproof, durable as hell, and with a lifetime warranty.

Android phone - with Swype, and LogMeIn Ignition (if you need it for your job).

A Thermarest self-inflating sleeping pad...great for camping, or crashing at a friend's place, or living without furniture (though the bed-in-a-box someone mentioned is also sweet and pretty much a necessity if you've got a gf/bf...I ordered the queen sized from Walmart and it was perfect).

Wire shelving/carts. I buy the commercial-grade ones at Lowes Hardware with the big casters (wheels) and use them for TV/computer stands, easily-moved storage, etc. Some of them fit easily in closets and make great clothing-organizers (haven't had a stupid heavy 'dresser' in over a decade). When you move you can use them to transport your stuff to your vehicle, to an elevator, etc., and they make great furniture dollies too.

Outdoor remote power switches...the outdoor models are 3-prong and the indoor ones are usually 2-prong (and thus useless). Plug a power strip into one of these and hook all your computer stuff to that...button press turns all those 'vampire' power adapters and bright LEDs completely off.

Kleen Kanteen...stop buying bottled water and drinking out of plastic. Whether it's 'BPA free' or not, stuff just tastes better out of clean stainless steel and it lasts forever. Buy a Brita filter (or pitcher) if your tap water tastes like crap.

Kindle is the second-most useful gadget I've owned (after my Android phone).

And, finally, the best lube you'll ever find is Wet Platinum (silicone based). The stuff lasts forever and never gets sticky.

For not much more you could have bought a couple wireless switches that are waterproof. That is what I use and it is super handy.

That I can do! I will tell you though that i'm still very new at this so my approach was/is kind of weird. Before the Arduino I bought a remote controlled outlet kit and had fun turning my lamp on and off for awhile.

But then I got curious and busted the remote open. And found it had a little transmitter that was talking to the outlet converter that i plugged my lamp into. Click the switch, it sends a signal to the converter, lamp goes on. Click it again, it sends another, lamp goes off. After a little digging I found the frequency needed to talk to the converter (315 Mhz) and ordered a 315Mhz transmitter and receiver kit which would plug directly into the arduino. Here's where the coding comes in.

I now was on the right frequency but I still needed to know a few more things about the converter so I could talk to it ( send it a signal). BUT because I had the receiver I could listen to the communication the old remote made with the converter. So basically my first code used the receiver to eavesdrop on a private talk to hear a password. Then all I needed to do was create a loop that sends the signal with the transmitter to turn it on and off after a given time.

void setup(){
Serial.begin(9600);
mySwitch.enableTransmit(7);
mySwitch.setProtocol(2);
mySwitch.setPulseLength(800);
}
void loop(){
mySwitch.send(13330,15);
delay(64800000);

mySwitch.send(13322,15);//signal to turn off
delay(21600000);// ms..converted to 6 hrs
}

I bought this remote starter made for outdoor lights and it works fine. It's only ~$7.

I'm no wireless expert but I fail to see how moving the access point several feet into the hallway ceiling or some such would cause the wireless signal to be poor enough to warrant keeping it under the sink and risk calling a customer at 1:30am.

Plus, if you take the some of the money factor out, there's always the option of redundant and remote-controllable access points. Hell you could even just buy a remote-controlled power outlet box, and use it to kill power to the router. Those things cost like $10. *Link

Point being, there's options and there's no excuse for OP's treatment.

If you don't want to wake your wife, you could use something like the link below. I'd only get one if your modem uses a toggle switch or you have to pull the power cable. I use it to reboot my Obihai.

You can use contactors. But for the same price you can buy one of these. I use several to control my lights. Not that their is anything wrong with using contactors but this might be easier.

u/vailripper · 2 pointsr/woodworking

I use one of these http://www.amazon.com/Woods-32555-Outdoor-Control-Converter/dp/B001Q9EFUK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1410886550&sr=8-2&keywords=remote+control+outlet, and it works well. I have manual blast gates at all of my machines, so any kind of automatic on / off doesn't work well, as I have to flip gates manually anyway.

There are some automatic blast gate systems out there that look pretty slick, but they're not cheap.

I solved that problem: I bought this (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001Q9EFUK/) off of Amazon a couple years ago, hooked it up to a lamp.

Ever since then, I've been able to climb into bed, get comfortable, and then turn off my lamp and doze off happily into a deep slumber.

(Choose the 3 outlet version + light sensor)

This one is great, I use it to turn on my E-Nail and NES, has variable timed shutoff, and an awesome wireless remote

I did find this wireless switch on Amazon for just under $10. It may do the job. http://www.amazon.com/Woods-32555-Weatherproof-Wireless-Converter/dp/B001Q9EFUK/

You could get a submersible pump and a hose. Although you will need something to turn it on and off in between watering. Possibly a remote outlet. Then you can move the pump over to fresh water to flush the lines and prevent salt build up.

The link in in the description of the video now.

It’s $12.00 too

Sorry, it's basically these

u/J-Brosky · 1 pointr/Homebrewing

The pump on the right is connected to the HLT and only used to pump water. The pump on the left is for pumping wort. I've been thinking about adding some shielding for the pumps to ensure that they don't get wet. They stay dry as is but i would hate for something to happen. The switches used are extremely useful. I used to have to plug/unplug the pumps when I wanted to turn them on/off. I looked into using some Christmas light switches but they were bulky and cost more.

I think it depends on how much you brew. For me, a HERMS System and temp controlled fermentation are overkill for something I do 6x per year.

I do think you should get a couple kegs though. Put 1/2" ball valves on them, and do yourself a favor and get some quick disconnects like I have for your hoses: http://morebeer.com/products/mpt-stainless-steel-female-quick-disconnect.html

The disconnects save so much time and headaches when moving hoses. I wish I got them as soon as I switched to all grain. Speaking of hoses, get some silicone ones. They hold up much better to the high heat than the vinyl ones. And are food grade.

Invest in a March or Chugger pump, and a plate chiller. Quick disconnects on all of these fittings. Make sure you get a GFCI plug adapter too so you don't accident electrocute yourself. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000P8COIS/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_DSBotb0PNQ41V

A friend suggested I get a remote control plug too to turn the pump on and off. Very nice. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001Q9EFUK/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_hUBotb06YFKDB

Sorry for the long links. I'm on my phone.
