Heres your first flashlight. Please don’t touch those zoomies with a stick. Welcome to r/flashlight.

Wowtac A1S

  • $25
  • Micro USB rechargeable battery included
  • 1150 lumens
  • Neutral white
  • Good build quality
u/Zak · 13 pointsr/flashlight

Not very good. Not a good value at $35 when a Wowtac A1S is $26.

The mode selection is pretty bad. The high runtime is misleading. The battery is proprietary. It's not very waterproof. It's bulky for its capabilities. Coast lights are known to have visible flickering in their low modes. The color temperature is likely a very cool white that looks bluish and washes out colors.

u/bmengineer · 8 pointsr/flashlight

If you need it that soon, you're probably best ordering off Amazon. I'd suggest the Wowtac A1S, [Wowtac A2S](https://www.amazon.com/Headlamp-Headlight-Rechargeable-Waterproof-Headlamps/dp/B075ZN5LJY/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?keywords=wowtac&qid=1558886240&s=gateway&sr=8-2&th=1&p sc=1), or the Acebeam H40, unless you want something more expensive.

I hope you find him, this should be all you need unless you're in a super open area. If so, let us know and we can suggest a really long range light.

u/bluethelonious · 7 pointsr/flashlight

I would look at the Wowtac A1S as a good budget option, that comes with a rechargeable battery too.

Wowtac A1s in neutral white (NW) if you want something good but also portable.

u/Handsome_Zack · 6 pointsr/flashlight

My eternal suggestion for these types posts is the WowTac A1S, which has the advantages of both being cheap and including a micro-USB rechargable 18650 battery of decent quality. Simple on/off from the tail switch, and then there is a side switch to change modes (my dad has never quite figured how reverse-clicky switches work).

However, the low mode is pretty high at 24 lumens and a moonlight mode might serve your purpose better, at which point there are two nicer lights that I would put forward - the Thrunite Neutron 2C V3 or TN12. The Neutron is an e-switch only light that is controlled via one button and has shortcuts to both low and high. The TN12 is a nicer version of the aforementioned A1S with a nicer driver and a lower low mode, but as far as I can tell it does not come with a battery.

There are also a few AA/14500 size lights that you might be interested in, like the Sofirn SC31 or Wuben E05 (The SC31 is 18650... Still a viable option but way bigger than I thought).

Hope this helps!

u/Souichirou · 5 pointsr/flashlight

WELL THEN ! since you want something to start I always recommend either the Sofirn SP31 or the Wowtac A1S both on amazon for around $30 or less and come with an 18650 and charging solution with a turbo of 1000+ lumens. Since this is your first light you probably don't have cells or a dedicated charger unless you are a vaper.

IF you really want to drop closer to the set budget pick up an Emisar D4v2 tiny as all hell and dumps 4k+ lumens solid throw (not thrower levels BUT very impressive) and pick up some cells and a charger.

But again don't rush start small.... you will end up spending more than you want to overtime..... =D

Do you have any more info on what you'll be doing with it exactly? Is this a "take the dog out" kind of light?

The Wowtac A1S or A2S are both good, bright lights. The A2S is a headlamp, but you can take it out of the headband and use it normally, and a headlamp can come in handy sometimes. They both come with a removable battery that has built-in microUSB charging. The "neutral white" version of either light is recommended for more pleasant light.

u/Ratus_ · 5 pointsr/flashlight

That's a very crunchy light.

Do not get that light.

Definitely not worth $3, let alone almost $10.

------

Get either one of these much better lights:

  • Wowtac a1s
  • Sofirn SP31

    -------

    >but this first purchase is out of need for finding ping pong balls

    That's one I hadn't heard before.

I'd suggest you do another post about what you need the light for, you will get a lot of good responses.
u/General_Specialist · 4 pointsr/flashlight

Single mode really limits your choices, the vast majority of good lights have multiple modes. There are lights with really simple operation where you can treat it kind of like a single mode light, though.

Check out the Wowtac A1s. It has a button on the tail that switches the light off and on. It also has a silver button on the side that cycles between the five modes. If you never touch the side switch, it'll act just like a single mode light. It doesn't come with a charger, but the battery has a built in micro USB port for charging.

Another simple option is a Sofirn SP31 V2.0. It works the same way with the tail button for on/off and the side button for switching through the five modes. That one comes with a more traditional battery and charger.

Wowtac A1S is great for getting started. I still use it all the time. Its bright, extremely durable and not very expensive. https://www.amazon.com/A1S-Flashlight-Pocket-Sized-WOWTAC-CW/dp/B07M5BV8P7?th=1

There are a number of great ones available within that price range. Most good modern lights run a rechargeable cell called an 18650, it carries the energy density of about 5 AA cells in a package not much bigger. If you don't have any batteries or charging equipment yet I'd recommend getting one with built-in charging that comes with a cell. There are a couple of notable ones in your budget that I'll recommend. The $26 Wowtac A1s is one of the most-recommended lights on this sub, it's quite well-made for the price, and comes with a battery that has a micro-usb port built in for charging. Going up in price a bit, the new (ish) Thrunite TC15 has as great user interface, built-in charging, and hits 2300 lumens. Would be a great EDC.

If you wanted to go cheaper and have a light that requires separate batteries and a charger, ($6 each and $8-15 for the charger) ~$15 will get you a BLF A6 or Convoy S2+, each of which are really great lights as well. We'd be happy to chase down the links for those as well if you're interested, but any of these would be a great first light. I'd probably recommend the Thrunite if you're willing to spend it though.

A pad. If you're expecting cold nights along the way, get an insulated pad. Foam pads and self inflating pads are inherently insulated. If you go with any form of inflatable, blow it up early so it has a chance to cool while you're setting up camp, then make sure you top it off before you go to sleep because the hot moist air you blow in will shrink a bit.

Got stakes? You may want to get a few extra, and get some extra cord too. To save yourself time while setting up camp, go ahead and set up your tent at home and attach the cord to every guyline loop and tie your tension knots. You really want to stake and guy out your tent if it's windy, and especially if you'll be leaving your tent during the day since you won't be around if the weather changes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnwfT2tQ1zU

No, don't buy a generator. You're on a road trip, so you'll probably get into campgrounds late in the day when there's usually a ban on using generators because of how noisy they are. If you really want power, then pay extra for a site at the campground that has electricity. OTOH, if you're just powering devices that charge via usb, then charge them in your vehicle, and get a power bank if you need extra power in your tent.

Double check the rating on your sleeping bag, especially if it's one of those bulky synthetic bags that cost around $100 or less. They tend to use the lower limit or extreme rating instead of the comfort rating. If you want to take the lazy way, then add 20°F to the rating...so a 20°F bag is actually comfortable at 40°F.

Get yourself a roll of quarters just in case laundromats don't have functioning coin exchangers, and if you're frugal, pack yourself some detergent too.

If you're changing locations every day, and you don't need a hot cup of coffee, tea or cocoa, then you might be better off eating at restaurants or getting to go meals. It'll mean carrying less gear and spending less time cooking and cleaning. Bring snacks to fill in between meals.

You may want to get a flashlight and headlamp. /r/flashlight is the place to get recommendations for lights that are much better than Black Diamond, Petzl or worse. I'll throw out a quick recommendation. Nitecore NU20 or NU25 they have a low setting that's not too offensive to your tent mate if you need to get up in the middle of the night, the high mode is decent, it's efficient, and it'll actually show you the battery life in each mode unlike so many crappy plastic headlamps. There's also the Wowtac A1S.

If you get cold feet at night out there, take a look at your socks. It doesn't take much for socks to be tight enough to restrict blood flow and make your feet colder even if you're wearing extra socks.

Depends on what you need it for. Looks like there's a 10% off coupon for the Sofirn on the listing so that's closer to $33. [Skilhunt H03] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QNPHB43/?coliid=IO5EZ9P7F0TH8&colid=LVIYOC1TPTP9&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it) for a good right angle headlamp that you can use as an edc, about $50 for the bundle that comes with a battery. [Sofirn SP40] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07XKST56M/?coliid=I28PCTS2ZHHV8I&colid=LVIYOC1TPTP9&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it) for a more wallet friendly headlamp/edc thing, $31 and comes with a battery. Others mentioned are good, the [SP36] (https://www.amazon.com/Powerful-Flashlight-Rechargeable-Brightest-Excluded/dp/B07KFF5BGZ/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=sofirn+sp36&qid=1570878581&sr=8-3) would be right around your max if you have batteries laying around. $70 for the bundle that comes with batteries.

u/Buzzy243 · 3 pointsr/flashlight

The D4 doesn't need that exact cell, it just needs a good unprotected 18650 like the 30Q or LG HG2 or Sony VTC6. Most going to be somewhere around $5-$8.

Don't buy them from Amazon or Ebay, there's a high risk of fakes.

The D4 is a great deal for a high output light, but if you need something cheaper maybe check out the $26 Wowtac A1S or make a post asking for recommendations in your desired price range.

u/literal-hitler · 2 pointsr/mildlyinteresting

I've got one of these, the battery has a micro-usb connector, and I'm pretty sure the thing could survive being run over by a tank. It's probably going to be my best recommendations unless you're going to get really into it, or spend over twice as much. There are plenty of better choices if you don't care how much you spend.

u/archover · 2 pointsr/flashlight

Update: Evidently there is no V1 at Amazon.

Amazon and it's screwy interface. They (my link above) all say V2 to me. Yes, a $55 option exists but I have no idea how it varies from the $89 one.

$55 is more like it to this budget shopper. An even better value in my eyes is the full package, side switched, reflector A1S at $26, although for a car light I would prefer a TIR one.

The flash right around 20-30 lumens I would guess. Sun produces (according to the internet) around 10,000 lumens per square foot. That means the watch face is likely expecting 800-1600 lumens, assuming it's between 1 and 2 square inches. I'm going to guess that it would charge very slowly, If at all. Also important to consider that solar panels have varying efficiency based on the wavelength of the light they're receiving. This means it may even be less efficient via LED considering they're not 100 CRI.

If you don't have a headlamp as well you are wrong. Being hands free helps so much.

  1. Wowtac A1S Flashlight
  2. Wowtac A2S Headlamp

While I prefer USB rechargeable you could go with Streamlight as they have some really nice AAA and AA flashlights. They have some more powerful CR123 battery flashlights as well.
u/ThePresenter183 · 1 pointr/flashlight

I recommend the WowTac A1S, it produces an honest 1000 Lumens, has great modes and the battery is reliable and easy to charge (uses a cellphone charger). It includes a pocket clip as well which is convenient.
