We had this one for a long time and it's adjustable so you can adjust the pitch of the noise a little. However, I think it was a little lower-pitched than the video you posted at our regular setting (we don't have it any more though, so I'm not sure).

u/danecdotal · 14 pointsr/boston

The only things that worked for me are a white noise generator or moving elsewhere.

Noisy people never stop being noisy.

u/manatee1010 · 13 pointsr/AskVet

And if you can still hear them, get a white noise machine to keep in your room, near the door.

I'm a REALLY light sleeper. Naturally I own one cat who wanders the halls at night, wailing (for no reason at all), and one who runs around like an idiot all night (at 13 years old!!).

Drowning them out is your best defense. The white noise machine is a good start (I like this one). Add ear plugs if necessary.

u/lynkfox · 12 pointsr/Parenting

Second the white noise. We got https://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Classic-White-Noise-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM this model and it is incredible. Mechanical, super soothing, changed our kids sleeping habits almost instantly.

u/TheSandwichKing · 10 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

As someone who is constantly on the road and also a full-blow fan-while-I-sleep addict I have to recommend the Marpac Dohm-DS.

It's "real" white noise caused by the movement of air, but can be packed extremely easily. Trust me, it saved my life and marriage.

I use this Dohm sound conditioner. Expensive but awesome.

White noise machine. To mask what's going on behind that door.

Ok so I used to live in an apartment with thin walls, and as a light sleeper it drove me nuts.

Years ago, I got one of these. It sounds like a constant fan noise, but it blends in so well that you stop hearing it pretty much immediately, but it keeps outside noise from bothering you too much. I would sometimes fall asleep without it on, only to wake up repeatedly throughout the night, until I realized what the issue was.

I live in a much quieter place now, but I still find it helpful and comforting to sleep to.

Marpac DOHM white noise machine

Red Gummy Bear Nighlight

  • Use a real white noise machine. We used a battery operated one in a stuffed animal. Yeah, sure it's cute, but it didn't do crap. The Marpac got our daughter sleeping through the night.

  • Use a red light when tending to your child in the night. It doesn't disturb their sleep cycle. We were using a dimmed lamp, but our daughter would wake and stay awake and want to play. We started using this, and she would go back down A LOT easier.
u/Leezardy · 8 pointsr/whatisthisthing

It's this white noise maker so that you don't overhear people having therapy.

u/illuxion · 8 pointsr/pics

I have the marpac noise maker, it just stresses me out. I also use the ceiling fan as a noise distraction, but my problem is not being able to shut my brain down. I constantly think about this project, that meeting, did I remember to roll out the patch to that site. I need to get back into reading or some other distraction to help turn off my brain and stop being such a worry wart all the time.

u/FAHQRudy · 8 pointsr/scifi

No, I agree with the problem. I have tried a bunch of ambient apps and I can notice the loop edit right away and find myself waiting for it. It does not make falling asleep an easy feat when you are fully alert and waiting for the pattern to repeat.

This, in my opinion, is the only way to fly.

u/CAK6 · 7 pointsr/AskNYC

I've had the marpac below for 5+ years without any issues. I can't imagine sleeping in the city without it.

My Fiance, my 3 year old (possibly ADHD) daughter, and I went on a 13 hour road trip to see family just a few weeks ago.

It went incredibly well, seriously.

My Plan:
Bring lots of dry snacks and things she normally has, and some things that are limited treats. We brought Lemon Zest Luna bars, lots of NutriGrain bars, fruit cups, pudding cups, single serving snacking crackers. We also brought a cooler for her to have her lactose-free milk and propel waters chilled.

I bought a few look and find books for her (Jake and the Neverland Pirates, Sofia the First, and Bubble Guppies), loaded her ipad with episodes of Wally Kazaam, Little Einsteins, and a couple of movies she hasn't seen in a long time (Finding Nemo and Monster's Inc). I also bought some Crayola Color Wonder coloring books and markers.

We started off the trip without any entertainment, no music/movies/books, just conversation. After about 3 hours, she fell asleep (it was around her usual nap time). After she woke up from her nap she was a little irritated that we were still on the road, so I broke out the ipad and snacks.

After she would settle down, we'd take a break from entertainment and just talk. We rationed entertainment for when she was getting uncomfortable.

Even though she's been potty trained for over a year, I dressed her in a Pull-Up in case we couldn't get to a bathroom in time, or if she had an accident while asleep (something that does happen at home).

For sleeping, we brought her own sheets, pillowcase, and mattress cover, oh and her special blanket. We brought along her white noise machine as well. This is her Dohm and it seriously saves my life on a regular basis. We did semi-normal bedtime routines in both hotels and my in-laws.

I was incredibly stressed out before the trip, just try to write a real plan down that fits with your kids. You know them best! I tried to research things to do on road-trips, but my daughter could really care less about license plates haha.

Good luck!

I had the same problem. I used a fan on high for white noise and it worked great.

I've also read that these little devices are amazing:

White noise machine will drown out most/all of the noise. It'll take a night or two to get used to it but then you'll never sleep without it on ever again.

u/wafflesareforever · 6 pointsr/AskMen

You need a mechanical one like this.

u/meismariah · 6 pointsr/TwoXChromosomes

Have you tried an actual white noise machine? And I don't mean the electronic kind but this kind. There's a small fan in the box, and you can adjust the tone and noise level by swiveling the outside casing to adjust the size of the holes. It works very well.

u/GrokMeAmadeus · 6 pointsr/daddit

The best purchase my wife and I made was a dohm sound machine. It’s way better than any electronic white noise generator and helped my girls sleep through many nights of fireworks and lightning storms. Pitbull - another quite vocal dog

My girlfriends Pomeranian barks when I fart. Just something we accept. You can try something like a white noise maker for when you're sleeping. It might help drown out the sound. It can also help you sleep.

u/Eurynom0s · 5 pointsr/startrek

https://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Dohm-DS-All-Natural-White-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM

It's mechanical as opposed to being something playing a recording on a loop, so it definitionally can't result in that issue you're describing of noticing when the loop restarts.

u/TrickyPlover · 5 pointsr/Parenting

I use [this](Marpac Dohm-DS All-Natural White Noise Sound Machine, Tan https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000KUHFGM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_UXlnzb8RG76JB) white noise machine. I was previously using fans, but they always developed ticks or squeaks that annoyed me and they were not as effective. If the iPhone apps don't work, this could be worth a try!

u/jonathonross84 · 4 pointsr/DIY

we have a 2 year old and an 8 month old. For naps we close the door in what ever room they're sleeping in and turn on the white noise maker . They are worth every penny.

u/Oobert · 4 pointsr/CCW
  1. get white noise machine or something like fan.
  2. put in babies room.
  3. turn on.
  4. enjoy sleep again. :)

these are expensive as fuck but it works wonders. Also kid is less likely to wake up due to loud noises.

u/greentintedlenses · 4 pointsr/malelivingspace

If you are this concerned with the looks of a fan In a dorm room, specifically when it's only being used for ambient noise.. I'd suggest a sound conditioner instead. Like this one https://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Dohm-DS-All-Natural-Machine-Actual/dp/B000KUHFGM

u/ewilliam · 4 pointsr/firstworldproblems

I know, it's meant ot be a humorous FWP post, but we have 2 of these noise machines (one for us, one for our toddler) and they are really great.

Failing that, (if we're traveling and don't feel like packing it, etc.), we use the whitenoise app for the iPhone in concert with some little portable speakers.

u/RedPillington · 3 pointsr/asktrp

get a white noise machine. this one is baller. then tell them you're sleep deprived and could they put on some music or try to be quieter in the middle of the night. be congenial. this is not some sort of bullshit alpha magic situation. it's common courtesy. i would try to talk to the guy instead.

i want to help you, so here is advice: lurk. read. models by mark manson is a good book that covers most of what you ask about on an ongoing basis.

u/turtl · 3 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Assuming you're not interested in sites like Simply Noise (which I use a lot), I would recommend the Marpac Sleepmate. I bought one for my mom and she loves it. She let me test it when I went home to visit, and it was pretty awesome.

u/UrinalMint · 3 pointsr/aggies

Lived in FHK the first two years it was coed (96-98).

  • Bring flip flops to wear in the shared shower.
  • The desks and cabinets do uninstall from the walls if you want to do a creative loft.
  • Train noise reverberates through the quad, but you'll adjust quickly. A white noise machine like this will help immensely.
  • Unless things have changed (I'm sure they have) your closest laundry not in the dorm will be in the study room behind Keathley adjoining Davis-Gary.
  • Heldenfels is a short walk (10 mins), and that's where the majority of life sciences (for fish) should be.
  • If you're in a room at the end, you can install a hammock on the corner of the railing pretty easily.
  • Most important of all, leave your door open when you're there! Jam your music loud enough for passers-by. It's a great way to meet folks.
u/Canopyflyer · 3 pointsr/BuyItForLife

We have two of THESE and they both have been used every night for the past 6 years, plus travelling, with no failures. This unit actually has a small fan that blows through the holes in the case and that is what makes the noise. You can adjust the number of holes for the desired sound volume, and the fan motor has a low and high speed.

u/BellaBanella · 3 pointsr/ADHD

Another white noise fan. This is what I use. I like the sound of air moving better electronic white noise.

Melatonin helps me drift off. It doesn't make me sleepy, but if I'm already a little tired, my thoughts become more like dreams than thoughts, and I stop reacting to sounds or ideas. Isn't enough if I'm wired or wound up.

I also take mitrazipine now, which is similar to trazadone. They are antidepressants that are also commonly used to treat anxiety and insomnia, among other things. I take a tiny dose, specifically to help me sleep. Taking it doesn't change the rest of my medication plan, it's just a little bump. Docs commonly give trazadone to old folks who can't sleep due to evening anxiety - it's that harmless (compared to other sleep and anxiety drugs). My 93 year old grandmother who was medically frail was taking it!

I don't do this, but I diaphragmatic breathing is very helpful for bringing down the anxiety and can help get you out of your head. So peaceful. Plenty of tutorials online.

We use this one for our room, it's really neutral. We have a baby one that does ocean waves in the nursery. Part of our "sleep routine" with the baby includes turning on his white noise machine.

u/Spektr44 · 3 pointsr/explainlikeimfive

The white noise machines that play noise through a speaker are supposedly not as good as those that produce noise mechanically. This mechanical white noise machine is very well-regarded, however I own one and it still doesn't beat a box fan. With light there's a concept of getting a full spectrum light. It's similar with noise. You want a rich, wide spectrum of noise.

Barring that, there are phone apps you might try such as White Noise Lite, Relax Melodies, and Chroma Doze. Relax Melodies is pretty neat, as it lets you create custom noise by layering in different sounds. These apps are on Google Play, dunno about iTunes.

u/TheFallenKnight · 3 pointsr/AskMen

You have to determine what is different about your sleep routine when she stays over vs when she doesn't. Then try to adjust it accordingly. If it's just her presence, you will get used to it.

Also, buy a good sound machine. They have always helped me sleep. And every person who has had it in their lives for a while ends up buying one.

u/filecabinet · 3 pointsr/Meditation

I have a white noise machine:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000KUHFGM/

What you could do is go to this white noise website and turn up the volume really loud (or with headphones):

http://simplynoise.com/

u/Chees_a_saurus · 3 pointsr/stepparents

> Next time, try throwing a load of laundry in or start the dishwasher. If possible, consider getting a place together with more separation between the rooms or at least rearrange the furniture for maximum sound insulation.

We have one of these on a nightstand. Very handy for good sleep and for masking sounds.

u/alaskafound · 3 pointsr/tinnitus

Distraction is key - if you guys don't have a sound machine, get one immediately. Best 50 dollars I've ever spent - worth every penny.

(If interested, here is link to the one I have and love and it's on sale!)

Listen to lots of "nice" music, quietly. You can take the initiative here. When I say "nice" I mean quiet-ish, acoustic.

And most importantly --- talk about it. Ask him about it. He's going to have to learn to live with this (or it will go away!)

Good luck!

u/NullXorVoid · 2 pointsr/IAmA

White noise machines are a blessing for anyone with tinnitus. I have this one. It makes a sort of whooshing sound, but you can modify the tone and volume to your liking. It's not exactly cheap, but for me it was totally worth it.

u/costellofolds · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Once when I worked for a soulless corporation, I cashed out my gifted stocks. In hindsight, I wish I'd kept them, particularly since they skyrocketed about four months after I cashed them out. That'd come in reeeeeeeeeal handy now. But still, I don't regret what I got with them:

  • a Giant city-cruisin' bike
  • actual luggage
  • a new pair of Birkenstocks
  • a metric crap ton of Just Coffee
  • a Sleepmate noise machine
  • donated to a couple charities near and dear to me
  • paid off part of my student loans
u/hahadontknowbutt · 2 pointsr/hearing

I was having the same problem as you. I use these, but the life hack that really got them to work for me, is I cut the bottom off (like a cm) and just use that.

I have short ear canals I guess so I couldn't get any ear plugs deep enough to stay? And using the thicker end makes a better seal. I did tend to wake up without them in my ears any more, but I think I was pulling them out in my sleep. Once I got to sleep I didn't need them as much though, and my noise maker helps to muffle the noises and not distract me from sleeping.

u/masi_is_master · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

What you need is to get one of These.

I was in your situation until a few months ago when I invested on this little beauty. The way it works is to create the most sleep-inducing sound known to man. You would be surprised how much ambient sound factors in getting to sleep. Seriously, try it.

u/greenchipmunk · 2 pointsr/breakingmom

We got one of these a few weeks ago. Amazon had them on sale. I like that it's very adjustable so you can customize the noise level.

u/beard-second · 2 pointsr/todayilearned

If you need white noise to sleep, you should try an analog noise machine (something with a fan) instead of something with a speaker like the Sleep Sheep. The difference it makes is incredible. I have trouble sleeping in a quiet room, so I use a Dohm, which works extremely well. It's expensive, but it's well-engineered and should last a long time.

u/LobbingLawBombs · 2 pointsr/daddit

This is the one I have. It's nice because it's moving actual air, so it doesn't have that "fake" sound to it.

u/agreywood · 2 pointsr/sleep

Get a white noise machine. They're louder than an ipod or phone generator, but do not need to be right in your ear to work. My husband uses one to deal with the fact that I watch TV late at night when he is sleeping (I'm up at work). This is the one we have. I can not watch an action movie at loud volumes, but he says it completely blocks out TV and all normal conversation noise. It also blocks the screaming fights my upstairs neighbors like to have when I am sleeping.

u/cltphotogal · 2 pointsr/Charlotte

Aside from filing a noise complaint like some others suggested, have you considered getting a noise machine? I can't sleep without one anymore. Definitely helps to drown out outside noises. I've got this one:

https://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Dohm-DS-All-Natural-White-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM?th=1

u/pf_mf · 2 pointsr/Fitness

I second the white noise maker suggestion. You can find these at Bed Bath and Beyond (or perhaps cheaper on Amazon). They're not much more than a little fan that you can plug in and you can control the frequency/loudness. They sound loud at first but both my wife and I love it. I recommend them highly.

This is what I use.

u/zorinlynx · 2 pointsr/Miami

I'm going to recommend that you get a white noise machine.

This is the one I have:

https://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Classic-White-Noise-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM?th=1

It actually creates the white noise mechanically so it sounds "better" than electronic ones. When I have this thing turned on, I could sleep through pretty much anything. I live next to a road so there's often a lot traffic noise in the morning; ever since I got this thing I'm no longer woken by rush hour.

You won't hear neighbors, you won't hear traffic, and you won't hear Ultra.

u/mollificent · 2 pointsr/sleep

The Marpac Dohm original white noise machine is the one I’m referring to. Here’s a link:Marpac is the best thing for sleep if you are sensitive to noise or live in a noisy place. I used to live above a night club and it was so helpful.

A lot of people use these apps that have digital loops of soothing sounds but for one thing the loop itself can be distracting. And the other thing is it functions in a different way.

The white noise of the Marpac tricks your brain into masking the obtrusive sounds, that’s why it can take a couple weeks to get the full effects- your brain needs to get used to it.

The sound is similar to a fan, but a much smaller device, more effective and you might not always want a fan blowing air around.

You might need quite a bit of sound paneling but you could start small and see how it goes. It’s amazing to me what even a small amount can do to dampen sound.

Good luck and I’m sorry about your noisy roommate situation!

u/spiralstaircase · 2 pointsr/TheGirlSurvivalGuide

White noise, my friend. (There's also pink noise and brown noise, which is my favorite)

You could buy a noise machine:

u/angrydroid · 2 pointsr/tinnitus

Look into a white noise generator of some kind. They work wonders on masking out the sound especially at night when trying to sleep which is when I find it is the worst. Something like this which uses actual moving air to make the noise is often better than something electronic in my opinion.

u/lmbb20 · 2 pointsr/LifeProTips

If you have trouble sleeping from the noise, you can buy a noise machine that makes a wind type of noise. I use it since I live in the city and it helps me sleep.

http://www.amazon.com/Marpac-DOHM-DS-Natural-actual-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM

Edit: In the city I constantly hear search helicopters, life-flight helicopters, ambulance and police sirens all night.

u/ercay · 2 pointsr/bodybuilding

I have a 9-5 and I lift from 7 AM - 8:30 AM. Not every workout is 1.5 hours but that's my window.

For me, the trick has been and always will be caffeine. Namely getting it into my bloodstream as fast as possible.

Here are some tactics to get out of bed:

  • Drink preworkout in bed. Have a large glass of water on the nightstand, a plastic spoon, a scoop or 2 of preworkout, pre-measured waiting to go. When the alarm goes off, dump the preworkout into the water, mix, chug, and lay back down. In 15 minutes or so the caffeine will begin to go to work. You won't be able to sleep, so get up! The plastic spoon is to save your spouse from having to listen to you mix.

  • Caffeine pill. Same as the tactic above. Wake up, slam, and lay back down. You won't be snoozing for long.

  • If you can actually get out of bed and get caffeine into you quickly, it's a lot easier to get your day started. I crankily wake up, drink preworkout in the kitchen, and then force myself to pack my gym bag and clothes for the day. After 5-10 minutes, I feel fine.

It's never going to feel great waking up super early to lift, but after a while, it just becomes a part of your schedule.

Lastly, try to wake up at the same time every day regardless if it's a training or rest day. Having the same schedule helps your body adjust and wake/sleep more easily. On rest days, I still wake up at 6 AM, but I play Xbox, do laundry, or even grocery shop. As a 30-year-old dude with a fiancee and 2 dogs, any time to myself is much appreciated!

Oh yeah, I'm a light sleeper too. White noise has helped immensely in masking noises from outside my condo. I prefer physical white noise, as opposed to a digital sound, so I bought this: http://www.amazon.com/Marpac-DOHM-DS-Natural-actual-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM. I love it.
u/LastImmortalMan · 2 pointsr/formula1

If anybody wants to invest in a white noise machine and change their lives this is the one to go for:

https://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Dohm-DS-All-Natural-White-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM?th=1

I could never listen to white noise or stuff over speakers when trying to sleep, no matter the type of noise. This one is different, after the first 2-3 nights I could never go back to sleeping in silence or with make-shift solutions.

2-3 of these things can take over a floor of a house and dampen a lot of sound, if you are into white noise machines don't hesitate to pick one up.

Edit: For professional sleepers Marpac has some pretty nice stuff: https://www.marpac.com/electronic-category/product/36-marsona-1288a.html

Have you considered investing in a white noise machine? I lived once in a neighborhood where every night around 3:00 in the morning loud train horns would blast making it quite difficult to stay asleep. This really helped: https://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Classic-White-Noise-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM

u/DeusoftheWired · 2 pointsr/asmr

> Intentional binaural sounds, nature sounds, etc, with the single purpose of triggering sensations in people have existed much longer than 10 years.

None of your examples exist with the single purpose of triggering ASMR in people.

Binaural beats: click. Or I-Doser for the garbage that claimed it could make people high through listening to music.

Meditation sounds: they help you get in trance.

Water and nature sounds: nothing ASMR-specific. Some people like nature sounds for non-ASMR relaxation. Similar to white noise generators.

They exist for triggering other sensations in people than ASMR. Now a small percentage of listeners might have gotten ASMR from these but they were not produced for them as a target group and not for this one specific feeling. This is what sets them apart from OP’s videos.

to have a ceiling fan running 24 hours a day would cost you approx 21 cents. to have that running 365 days would be $77. A white noise machine will cost you $55.

u/wintremute · 2 pointsr/Guitar

Yep. I tried them, hated them, didn't realize there was anything better, gigged with nothing, and damaged my ears. The mid 90's weren't exactly quiet times on stage either, as you can imagine.

The old Bob Seger line of "lie awake in bed with the echoes of the amplifiers ringing in your head" is true. I still lose sleep from tinnitus. White noise generators are awesome.

I always have and probably always will have problems with sleep. I've taken many measures over the years in an attempt to make the process as painless as possible, with varying degrees of success. I can divide my methods into three categories: room preparation, personal equipment, and a sleep stack.

Room preparation is the most straightforward and the easiest to accomplish, because you generally just need to do it once and then not worry about it. In my case, I place thick blackout curtains over the windows and affix velcro to the walls so that I can secure them firmly to prevent light from leaking around the edges. Stopping it from bleeding through the top is more difficult and depends entirely on the curtain rod, though you can stick any old fabric up there to block most of it. Any blue LEDs should be blocked with either tape or a cloth. If a nightlight is needed, it should be red or orange.

Having taken care of most of the visual obstructions, the next step is to eliminate auditory distractions. Actually blocking sound is almost impossible, but measures can still be taken. Ambient noise generation can do a good job of blocking disturbances by generating a consistent level of sound that will ideally make any sudden noises less jarring. Most people go right to white noise, but other noise patterns exist, most notable pink and brown noise - you'll want to use whichever is the closest match to the intrusive noises you're most likely to experience. A good preview of the different types can be found here, and you can customize and purchase your own variant on the site if the standard varieties are inadequate. If you're annoyed by any looping in the track, you can buy a Marpac machine instead, which is entirely analog and thus has no loop.

The next piece of the puzzle is simpler but must be done consistently, personal equipment. I personally utilize a sleep mask and earplugs every night. The sleep mask should be black or some other dark color - they make white ones, but I have no idea why because they are ineffective. You might need to try a few variants before you stumble onto a tolerable one because they can feel odd. There are a nearly uncountable number of earplugs available, so you'll need to experiment there as well - fortunately they're cheap. You'll want a high DBR (decibel reduction) value, so be on the lookout for that. Particularly bad environments will necessitate drastic measures, in which case ear protection might be required. Note that only people who can sleep on their back will be able to sleep in ear protection.

Finally, we come to the sleep stack. THE FOLLOWING IS NOT MEDICAL ADVICE AND SHOULD NOT BE TREATED AS SUCH. There are numerous supplements that are useful in improving some piece of the sleep process. The cornerstone is obviously melatonin, but what's less commonly known is that less is generally better. An idea dose is .5-1mg, and higher doses experience at best a flat response and at worst a paradoxical effect. Other supplements that are generally thought to be useful are: ZMA, glycine, valerian root, and L-theanine. When beginning a new regimen, it's important to add only one supplement at a time to check for any odd effects while titrating the dosage.

Ultimately, there is only so much that can be done to counteract pervasive sensory dysfunction and enable sleep. However, these steps can at least help enough for most people to get by even if conditions are not ideal.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that blue-blocking glasses should be worn for about an hour before going to bed. These have the same effect as the flux computer program only applied to your eyes rather than just one screen.

I know it is pricey, but I find that a mechanic white noise machine does wonders. A cheaper, digital one might work too, but I find that I am sensitive to the shitty speakers they normally come with and that the mechanical one has much better sound.

I've seen these used at doctor's offices and they work fabulously. I doubt it would block out the low, rumbling sounds, but it will help you get used to the background level of ambient noise.

White noise machine. And if it's truly screwing up your days this much, then it's well worth the money to buy. We have this one. You want to put the white noise machine where the noise is coming from. E.g. Ours is by the door and the wall to the hallway, because the noise we're trying to drown out is people walking by the room or up the stairs. If we were trying to drown out outside noise, we would put it by the window. Hope that all makes sense.

u/quietviolence · 2 pointsr/nursing

I work 2 weeks of day shifts and 2 weeks of night shifts alternating. My trick on my 2 weeks of nights is to get to the gym at 0100 on my nights off for a long and hard workout. I find that I sleep better during the day and have no problems maintaining a totally flipped schedule. I have black out curtains, a portable air conditioner to maintain cooler room temps, and a Dohm sound conditioner to block out daytime sounds.

It took me about 8 months of flipping around to figure that this works for me. I was the most exhausted when I stayed at home bored out of my mind, fighting myself to stay awake all night. Once I started incorporating working out into my routine, my mental and physical fatigue pretty much disappeared.

I actually bought that thing a year before going to college. Its weird at first to explain what it is to your roommate, but turning that and a fan on should drown out noise and help you both sleep

A white noise machine is a great idea. I have had tinnitus for 10 years (car accident/head injury). It is constant. Never a break for a minute... except when I turn on my white noise machine. I have this machine... I just turn it on, and take a break from tinnitus for a while. I have slept with it for the past 5 years.

u/ozzaron · 2 pointsr/LifeProTips

I really love stand alone white noise generators. I used to live in the middle of the bar district in downtown Austin, and picked this up. Also available as a cheaper single speed here - the single speed is the higher speed on the dual according to reviews.

It's some of the best money I've ever spent on sleep.

Of course. In terms of tinnitus treatment, without a comprehensive hearing test and counseling, I would not recommend any of the following methods. In most cases, tinnitus is frequently associated with hearing loss. When you treat your hearing loss, the residual benefit is that the tinnitus is mitigated. So, without knowing whether you have a hearing loss or not, I cannot say with a high level of confidence that the following methods will have optimal results.

Explore tinnitus relief apps for android and apple products. For example, Starkey Relax app (a lot of fine-tuning capabilities), Resound Relief app (a lot of soundscapes to choose from), etc.

For many years, I have used a Marpac Sleepmate for white noise. They generate the white noise by using a fan inside the housing. You can adjust the housing on the top and sides to adjust volume and pitch. It's a little miracle machine. If you need white noise in the room, I highly recommend getting one. They travel well, too. I take it with me whenever I am away.

u/alrighthamilton · 1 pointr/DoesAnybodyElse

You should look into one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Marpac-DOHM-DS-Natural-actual-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1426608309&sr=8-2&keywords=white+noise+machine

The adjustments allow you to choose the exact type of fan noise/tone that you want and it's been pretty easy to travel with for me.

u/4-string · 1 pointr/audioengineering

A solid-core door makes a big difference. Sound travels through air. You need mass (less air) in-between. I bet sealing the crack under the door with something would help.

Also, as mentioned a white noise generator near those you don't want to disturb will really help. One like this is $50.

u/mlloyd67 · 1 pointr/AskReddit

I found myself easily awoken by any little sound. A white-noise generator or machine helps drown them out. There are devices you can buy or applications you can download (I use "White Noise" on my iPhone when I travel).

u/eliazar · 1 pointr/childfree

toomuchnoiseabove, I so feel your pain, very similar situation here. Noisy families are a socially sanctioned source of noise (a sanction which the childfree movement is only in its early stages of overturning) so there's probably little you can do directly about it other than moving.

What has worked for me is indirect measures: tech, a minor architectural change (closing the window out to the common area with soundproofing), and mental training. The tech has been some really kick ass headphones (a great investment anyway just for the awesome music quality), putting HD white noise videos like this fountain on my TV, this sound conditioner (it's an adjustable white noise like that of an electric fan that gives you something to focus on and ignore the rest), and finally good quality ear plugs as a last resort (I've only used them once or twice, but just knowing that I have them available eases me).

Anyway, you don't have to feel powerless, you can tweak your environment and gear up! Feeling yourself in control is half the battle. The other half is about making mental peace with noise you just can't control, letting yourself get naturally used to it, distracting yourself when it comes, letting go of anger, calming yourself with putting things in perspective... I know, it's difficult and you may not want to hear this when what you want to do is vent and act, but it has been the other half of the answer for me :) Good luck!

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/AdviceAnimals

Yes you can. Unless your body is magically in sync with the earths rotation, you can certainly sleep whatever schedule you like. Get good curtains to block out the sun. If you need, get earplugs or a sound conditioner:

and go to bed early, and get up early. You can easily change your schedule. It will suck for a few days, but it is easy to do.

u/Corricon · 1 pointr/sleep

it can dehydrate the room and yourself. Not a problem if you live in a humid area really, but it will absolutely affect you otherwise. u/TimeTomorrow · 1 pointr/LifeProTips

I agree that if you are used to the air handler, that may be a different story, but for people not used to forced air heat (like guests) the on off of the air handler is not subltle at all.

Just say you like to sleep with a fan on and use a desk fan. Box fans actually move air more quietly than a smaller fan, so for this purpose a smallish desk fan is probably best.

you aren't the only one who thinks natural noise is better noise, but thats an option too:

If you need to block out noise, I recommend using good ear muffs such as the 3M Peltor X-Series. If that is insufficient, use earplugs underneath. I've also combined those with a good white noise generator like the Marpac Dohm. Noise-defense, in-depth.

Alternatively, if you have a lot of money to spend, you could get the Bose QC 35 II noise-cancelling headphones; however, they probably won't prove more effective than ear muffs over earplugs, just more comfortable.

If you can acclimatize yourself to ambient sound through meditation, even better. However, if noise countermeasures make the difference between meditating and not meditating, better to use them. This is just a more modern version of traditional Buddhist advice to find a quiet, secluded place to meditate - at least at the start.

I have found that other noise machines (rain noises, etc) just have a loop back that I can pick up on and it actually keeps me up even more because I am following the loop back. The white noise machine above has no such thing, I love them.

I have their travel one because I am on the road for work 3 weeks out of a month. Works great. If I was you, I'd use both. Put the fan by the window, on the right setting. Put the white noise machine on your dresser, next to you.

I seem to be the odd one out on this subreddit - but my boy was in his own crib in his own room the day we brought him home from the hospital. I was really nervous about it at first - but it was as simple as just doing it.

Our routine for any sleep is new diaper, put in sleep sack, cuddle/rock/bounce with mommy while mommy sings lullabye (The Lion Sleeps Tonight), and then down for bed. When he was really little, replace the sleep sack with swaddling, and occasionally I'd boob him to sleep (but I stopped doing that by 3 months old).

What we did to get a stretch at night was my husband did a dream feed at around 10-11 with a bottle (pumped milk). This bought me an extra hour or two. If I went to sleep at 9, I could get until 12 or 1 without issue most nights from the time he was 6 or 7 weeks old or so, and then it just got longer and longer. The hubs was staying up until then anyway.

Edit: white noise machine!!! This one is pricey, but it is SO WORTH IT. Get it.

u/marley0609 · 1 pointr/beyondthebump

I'm not giving a label to what we did/do. But I'll tell you about it. If we know that our little guy is tired but he is fussing/crying when being put down, we let him cry for a set amount of time. So right now that means about 10 minutes of general sporadic fussing/crying (the kind where you can tell they're so close to going to sleep but just haven't quite settled down enough) or 5 minutes of escalating crying. If he needs to be picked up it is always because he's hungry or just wants to eat.

We also make sure he gets a little bit jostled before being set back down. Just to ensure that he's continually keeping his self-soothing skills sharp. For us, that means unvelcroing and revelcroing the wings on his swaddler.

Also key: swaddled, dark, white noise (this is the shit)

Gotcha. She seriously sounds stubborn and likely doesn’t hear well. She probably thinks it’s ridiculous you’ve complained because she doesn’t see an issue with her behavior. When I lived in an apartment, I eventually had to get a white noise machine. It was a game changer because my neighbors were all miserably loud.

Get you one of these. The price is worth it, and if should greatly mask any outside noises:

I've used one of these for years: https://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Dohm-DS-All-Natural-White-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM?th=1 (You can usually get it at Bed, Bath Beyond for less, esp if you have one of their 25% off coupons.)

I've since then tried a couple of white noise apps which work just fine and are much cheaper/portable. Currently, I have "Sleepy Fan", "Windy" and "White Noise" apps, and all work great for me.

Thats an awesome website. It could work for most of the time, but the stupid apartment above me has a really loud stereo with lots of bass that even a deaf person could feel.

I looked at getting one of these, though like your solution it wouldn't cover up the subwoofer upstairs.

I know it's obnoxious but I also don't think that just because something is obnoxious people shouldn't be allowed to have them if they enjoy it. Try sleeping next to one of these. It helped both my babies with sleeping through annoying neighbors.
