A few months back I got a Switch. Played Zelda like crazy, but just didn't have much interest in the other games available. Did some searching, trying to find out why the VC wasn't on that system or when we would get it. That brought me to the Wii U and it's huge library. I was looking into getting that system when I stumbled across the GPD. So glad I didn't get a Wii U. But it seems we're in a similar boat. All I can say is that I love this thing. It has beaten the majority of my expectations to death.

The drawbacks: It doesn't have a camera or a microphone. A few Android games, like Pokemon Go, require the camera and/or mic and can't be played on the GPD, as far as I know. (Maybe there's a workaround?) Also, with the GPD you don't have a data plan, like on your phone, so you only get a mobile connection when you're at a WiFi spot or maybe if you tether it to your phone. Again, some Android games require a constant connection and if you're used to playing those on your phone, you won't be able to play them on the GPD (at least not in the same way).

Besides gaming I use my GPD for Netflix, Amazon, Plex, etc. Most of those services let me download a movie or a few episodes to the GPD for viewing while I'm away from WiFi. You had said you were going to use this thing on breaks; ya may want to watch a few shows instead of gaming every once in a while.

Amazon Basics has inexpensive high quality 25 ft HDMI cables, if you want to use your TV for the screen while at home. Be sure to get Full-HDMI on one end and mini-HDMI on the other.

This little OTG USB converter saved me so much time:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JCZ2FQQ/
It lets you plug a USB stick into the GPD (or a phone). It makes transferring files a lot faster (rather than moving the microSD between the PC/GPD).

The default interface and emulators that come with the GPD are adequate, but you'll eventually want to search through some of the topics here where people talk about the "best emulators". You'll end up shelling out less than $10 and it will be worth it.

Good Luck!

Fire TV Stick 4K + USB OTG cable + VLC app should do the trick.

OTG cable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JCZ2FQQ/

You could get the non-4K stick as well but it's a lot slower and not much less expensive. Might want to wait for a sale either way though.

Just to follow up; thanks for the tip. I went to the discord and figured out everything I need.

I ordered a xplorer from ebay for $35 and got a powered OTG to connect it to my tablet.

or you could've just copied the list here...

OTG Adapters for the NES/SNES Classic: Inateck:

Note: Only the USB 2.0 version is compatible with the NES/SNES Classic out of the box. You would need an adapter for the USB-C version to connect to the NESC/SNESC, and whether it actually would work is currently unknown.

Also, be aware that it uses its own power cable instead of the NES/SNES Classic's USB cable, and it is very short (roughly 12-14 inches long).Consider getting an extension USB cable or using an extension cord.

This one has been reported as working for many people, but can also reportedly break easily.

Simpler OTGs:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FY9Z9GD
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JCZ2FQQ
OTGs like these have only one port for USB. A simple choice if you only want to use USB and not wifi...or vice versa.

We do not recommend the small angled adapter featured on snesclassicmods.com and elsewhere. It looks great, but easily loses data connection at the slightest nudge.

If you are talking about this USB OTG http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JCZ2FQQ?psc=1 then you might have a few problems. USB OTG with Ethernet is all depend on the firmware of the device, not a lot of phone (android) support Ethernet connection. However, majority of the tablets will be able to support wired internet in the firmware. I tried it personally on my devices, phones and tablets. Perk loads relatively quicker than wireless.
Another problem you will run into is that the device will need to go back to Wifi when you want to charge it. The cable will provide a very small amount of charge, not enough to even the power used by device.

Directly. Get an OTG cable and a USB ethernet hub. I use the following:

OTG: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JCZ2FQQ
Ethernet: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IJU0K2Q

This also allows you to plug in a USB stick, to store all your legally downloaded roms.

USB to Ethernet works flawlessly for me. Definitely worth the money. I got this Y cable and this Ethernet adapter for under $18 altogether. That way I can charge my tablet while the adapter is plugged in for longer sessions. Great performance all around.

Charging is not possible with the Ethernet to micro USB adapters, so I highly recommend this setup if you go this route. Nvidia recommends using a Y cable on their website as well.

I use this one https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JCZ2FQQ my 128GB thumb drive shows up fine in /storage/usbotg/ sucks that it has to be FAT32... not even exFAT support.

You might need more power to drive the USB DAC. Try using one of these USB OTG Cables: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00JCZ2FQQ/

this one works fine for me:
https://www.amazon.com/Yonisun-Micro-Samsung-Phones-Tablets/dp/B00JCZ2FQQ/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1549147071&sr=8-5&keywords=y+OTG+cable
Use it as just an OTG and when you want connect power.
I also carry a power bank with me, so just connect the power bank to the input. same same.

u/housecat420 I dunno if you're still looking for an answer to this, but roughly seconding the answer above. I'm running my turntable into this Behringer USB/Audio interface with phono preamp, into a USB OTG cable with power, into an old Android (in this case a OnePlus One) running AirAudio. The phone isn't fully rooted, just developer options set to allow AirAudio root access. AirAudio source set to mic like u/goodhur mentioned. Works really well so far.

Thanks for the picture...unfortunately, it's not clear to me exactly what you are trying to accomplish. Are you simply trying to run things off of that usb stick? If so, this setup looks needlessly complicated. All you'd need is one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Yonisun-Micro-Samsung-Phones-Tablets/dp/B00JCZ2FQQ/ref=sr_1_17?ie=UTF8&qid=1541713088&sr=8-17&keywords=micro+usb+otg+adapter.

Or perhaps, I'm just not understanding fully.

Glad to help! You might want to get this cable as well – it should let you charge your S6 while using the DAC, and it may power the Modi too without the hub, it's worth fiddling with but not guaranteed to work: http://www.amazon.com/Micro-Cable-Samsung-Phones-Tablets/dp/B00JCZ2FQQ/

Mess around with the connections and apps and whatnot – you should be able to get it working, but Android does complicate things over even iOS here. But, there's no reason why with enough power supplied and the right cables, you can't make it work.
