I have heard that the Zondervan NIV Study Bible is good, and it looks like you can get it [used on Amazon for under $10] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/0310929555/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&condition=used). There are some problems with the NIV as a translation, but I don't think any of these are important for someone just starting to read the Bible. Hope this helps!

I was curious to see how the Bible rated with these stats.
Found these: KJV (King James, 1607),
NIV (Modern Translation)
Surprisingly, the KJV is rated as quite easy to read, and they both are at 100 percentile for length.

Also, the Qua'ran rates quite similarly, although slightly easier.

I own the Zondervan NIV Study Bible (needed it for a class), but I'm not that thrilled with it. Having a translation without notes and access to the internet is (in my opinion) just as useful as having the fully annotated Zondervan NIV Study Bible. I wouldn't recommend it.

I also own the Jewish Study Bible featuring the (New) JPS Tanakh Translation from the Oxford University Press (I own the first edition). That one's actually pretty useful and insightful. There's a significant focus on the Hebrew, and references are made to varied and inaccessible sources. Not all of the sources utilized are acceptable for Christians and some of the theology is objectionable to Christians (plus, it doesn't have a Christian New Testament), so it might not be of any use for you.

As far as translations go, my favorite (non-Jewish) translations are the NRSV and NET (NET offers a lot of notes). My favorite Jewish translation is, of course, the New JPS translation.
