What to keep

Keep anything related to taxes for at least 5 years. This is important for verification, as well as possible audits.

Keep anything related to bank accounts, credit cards, loans/mortgages, pay stubs, and other financial stuff for as long as the account is active, plus at least one fiscal year.

Keep any bills, even after they've been paid, for at least a year. You need them to contest charges, and often information on bills is used for identity and account verification.

Keep all identification records (IDs, SS cards, birth certificates, passports, official change of address forms, etc.) in a safe, secure location that can still be accessed at need. Don't carry them with you (except driver's license), or you risk losing them and giving someone an easy way to steal your identity.

Keep everything having to do with your house, apartment, car, boat, or any other large property that you own/rent and have to register or pay taxes on, for as long as you own/rent it.

Keep the warranty info and proof of purchase for any expensive things you own, for the duration of the warranty.

Keep copies of any personal medical documentation, unless you are covered by a provider that uses an electronic medical record. And even then, it's good to have a paper copy for backup and personal reference.

It's also a good idea to keep a copy of anything that you have signed, for as long as is relevant.

And of course, if you ever get involved in any sort of legal trouble, audit, lawsuit, divorce, or anything along those lines, KEEP EVERYTHING.

The bottom line is: If you can imagine a plausible reason why you might need it in the future, for reference or verification or proof of something or evidence or anything else, you should keep it. If you have a good file system, it won't take up much room or time, and you'll be very happy you did when that future situation comes up.

What to keep it in

If you only have a few people's papers to worry about, I suggest one of these or something similar. It's a latchable bin or box with built-in rails for hanging folders. If you are worried about security, it might be worth getting one of these, a fireproof (and waterproof) safe. It won't keep someone from walking off with the entire safe, but it prevents casual pilfering, and protects your important documents in case of a fire or flood.

Drawers or file cabinets are useful for larger organizational systems, but a household will almost never need something that large, and they tend to be bulky and hard to move around.

Do not, under any circumstances, try to store anything medium- or long-term in open paper trays. They won't stay organized, as it's too easy to just toss stuff on top, and if you need to move it around it'll just end up in a pile somewhere.

How to organize it
First, get some hanging folders for general categories and file folders for subcategories. They are very cheap. You can get different colors for fancy organization and scrapbooking, but it's probably not worth it. As long as they have tabs for writing labels on, you should be fine.

That's all you need. Well, besides the box (and a pen). There are lots of organizational system kits that you can buy for loads of money with colors and stickers and indexes and charts and fancy little view windows, but all you really need are some folders and a place to put them.

Start out with some general categories: Medical/Insurance; Credit Cards; Bank Accounts; Taxes; Bills; Rental/house/car/mortgage stuff; Identification papers; Warrenty/owner's manual info. That sort of thing. And in each category, make a file folder for, say, each bank account, or each credit card account, or each person's medical info, or each company that sends you bills. This takes very little time to set up, but makes it a lot easier to find things when you need them.

The thing to remember when setting up such an organizational system is this: Do what makes sense to you. You're the one who is going to have to remember how to use this system in the future, so file things in a way that makes intuitive sense at the time. If all of your credit and checking and savings and mortgage are through the same bank, maybe the bank should be your major category and each of those accounts should be a subcategory. If you would rather think of it as "things I own" and "things I owe" then that works too. If you want to get rid of subcategories entirely and give everything its own folder in alphabetical order, that's cool. Whatever makes sense to you, do that. And once you have a system, try not to make any drastic changes. You'll have a hard time remembering whether to use the old or new system, and that causes confusion, which leads to apathy, which leads to everything in a giant unorganized pile.

Where to put it

Ideally, somewhere that's near enough to the door or mailbox that you won't just toss things on the table to file later, but out-of-the-way enough that it's not an obvious target if someone breaks into your house. On a shelf is better than in a closet. Again, the important thing is that it's convenient enough that you'll consistently file things rather than leaving them "for later."

And finally

As OP said, it's also a very good idea to have a trashcan right next to the door, or even right under the mailbox, where you can immediately toss anything that isn't worth keeping (junkmail, mailers, credit card offers, etc.). Anything with sensitive info should be shredded or torn up first, of course.

For appointments, I recommend getting a slashproof bag with locking cable. Once you've received the cash, test it for counterfeits. Then put it (and other valuables) in the bag, and lock the bag to the plumbing under the bathroom sink.

For traveling between locations, use a money belt or a stash bra. I recommend keeping a decoy wallet with some cash and expired cards in it, so that if you are mugged, you can give them your decoy, while keeping the rest of your cash safe.

For storing cash at home, I'd make one or more "pipesafes" with some black iron pipe. Wrap and band the cash, then put it in a fire resistant bag. Then put it in the pipe, and plug the pipe with a pair of "test plugs". You can see what I mean at this instructable for making a survival cache with PVC pipe.

I recommend using black iron pipe instead of PVC because it provides some fire resistance, but you can use PVC pipe instead. You can find black iron pipe at hardware stores, and "test plugs" can be ordered online or purchased through plumbing supply stores.

Split up your money among several "pipesafes" in different locations around your apartment. That way, if you're ever robbed, the thieves may find some of your money, but they probably won't find all of your money. The best places to hide your pipesafes will vary from location to location, so you'll want to size them to fit in your preferred hiding spaces.

Be sure to write down your pipesafe locations somewhere! You will forget where they are!
I recommend storing them as a note in bitwarden, then give your bitwarden account info to a trusted friend or relative. That way, if you die or get sick/injured, your loved ones can find them and access your funds.

Why not a safe, you might ask? A safe can also work. However, thieves know to look for safes. If the safe is portable, they can just tear it out of the wall and walk out with it.

If the safe is heavy enough to prevent easy transport, then it will be a pain the butt for you to move as well. Most sex workers are young, and move or travel frequently. Pipesafes can be moved relatively easily. Plus, you could leave them behind if need be, as they're not that expensive to make.

How much cash should you keep on hand? That will vary depending on your circumstances and risk tolerance.

Personally, I would first build up a cash emergency fund of about $5 K for unexpected expenses, like car repair, "get out of dodge money" (stalker, legal action), medical bills, etc. Top up this fund as you make payouts from it.

Next, I would pre-pay a $5 K retainer with criminal defense attorney who has successfully defended a number of sex work cases. If you're ever in legal trouble, the cops may freeze your assets, making it difficult to hire someone to defend you. Prostitution / solicitation cases cost between $5 - $25 K to defend, so pre-paying at least enough to get started is a good idea.

Eventually, however, you'll probably want to deposit much of your cash in a bank account. If you ever want to purchase a house or car, having an established history of regular cashflow will be necessary. A bank account also makes it much easier to interface with the rest of the financial system.

However, any funds you deposit will become known to the IRS. So you should expect to pay taxes on those funds. You'll need to set aside around 30% of those funds for tax payments.

As an anti-money laundering and anti-tax avoidance measure, banks are required to report cash deposits / withdrawals (called a Cash Transaction Report for CTR) greater than $10000 to the government. Most banks have systems that send these reports automatically, electronically, along with your tax information.

Bank staff can optionally flag and any cash transaction as "suspicious", known as a Suspicious Activity Report (SAR). For example, they might flag a deposit as "suspicious" if they think it was artificially structured to avoid the reporting requirement. (For example, making four deposits of $2499 in a 24 hour period might cause them to make a SAR.)

Due to previous government crackdowns on politically unpopular groups (gun dealers, payday loan vendors, sex workers), banks and other financial institutions are particularly skittish about providing services to sex workers.

So, if you suddenly start making a lot of cash deposits, the bank will likely ask you the source of your funds. If you don't have a good answer, they may close your account. So, be sure to have a plausible story for the source of the cash before you start making significant deposits.

Brokerages, currency exchanges, precious metals dealers and other financial institutions have similar Know Your Customer / Anti-Money Laundering regulations.

From some experience, realtor's lock boxes work well but are a pain to put keys into/take keys out. You can find a bunch of time-lock safes which are nice and easy but they take away a fun aspect of the keyholder having direct control over the key. The perfect option seems to be the ChronoVault but that is very expensive so I haven't tried it.

About some of the other devices. When I am in chastity I like to be completely trapped. Even if I tried my best, I don't want to be able to get out. The above 3 items work well and are relatively foolproof unless you know how to pick locks. I don't like the plastic locks because they are pretty easy to remove and re-do.

The flat-clinch stapler is a must. The sharpie is really personal preference but I find that they do work best. Binder sheets are great for when you want to hand it top others to look at but I like the boxes for storage. Fun to dig through and a lot easier to move things when one gets full (try inserting a new coin in order in a page without having to move the 500 other coins you have to make space).

Started creating my own Amiibo coins thanks to some inspiration gained from seeing the work of a few of you on this server. Figured I'd share what I've created thus far in case anyone is interested! Here’s a link to the PSD template. Please forgive the fact that the Super Smash Amiibos aren't all grouped together because I started just creating the BOTW-compatible Amiibos first, then decided to keep going :P

The coins are 1" in diameter. Used a 1” circle punch to cut them out and housed them inside 30mm coin capsules with the included fitted foam inserts. Going to color code the rim of the foam so that I can easily identify the Amiibo series when they're in the case.

Have some 1” plastic counters on the way to provide some rigidity to the images and "fill out" the capsule a little better. Excited to get it all finished up so they can be put to good use!

Help her with getting those documents, first and foremost. Set up a weekly coffee date with her to sit down and make phone calls and go through all the steps/strategize. Don’t do it all for her — involve her and show her how to make informational phone calls, etc. introduce her to the adult process of “red tape”, since her mom clearly never wanted to do it.

Get any documentation of grades and academic performance from high school/middle school/grade school. High school diploma or GED certificate.

If she’s out of the house for good — like if her mom is actively hostile or abusive — she should collect any other important family information before she goes. Contact info for extended family members, special photographs, etc.

If she’s of age, get her signed up for SNAP/food stamps and local youth/low-income public transportation card.

Help her open her first checking account. Debit card. No credit cards. Warn her away from debt.

Prepaid basic cell phone. Cheap laptop or ipad+keyboard. Login info for her bank account. Link the phone with a Venmo and PayPal account for easy money transfer, if you’re going to be helping her get on her feet.

You should also look into local (in your town or the town she’s headed to) youth support services/social workers. She might be able to get a caseworker. There are usually programs that will help with tech literacy, putting together resumes/starting the job hunt, signing up for classes, etc. Your local community college should be able to point you in the right direction.

If she’s still in high school — see if she has any teachers she likes, or school counselors. You want to surround her with as many supportive adults as possible and you should all be talking to each other. Ask if she has any favorite/supportive aunties or neighbors.

Ideally, having her in therapy would be great so she can figure out next steps but it’s pretty expensive. Look up the Open Path Collective for local low-fee options.

I'm looking for something similar. I would recommend against any plastic molded SentrySafe or other similar brand.

I had a bad experience with a very nice "solid" name brand one. As far as I know it affects pretty much all the relatively cheap plastic sealed ones in general.

The hollow plastic body is filled with a moistened drywall like substance. This works fine if/while the plastic body is completely sealed. If it cracks on the outside it would still be ok.
The problem is that the mold injection point is often on the inside and when it's not a perfect seal, you now have something more like a terrarium for your documents.

You will see references to it "trapping" humidity and not having a good seal around the lid to keep moisture out. This is actually the complete opposite of the problem. What happens is you have a great seal around the lid on the better quality units, but the moisture is leaking into the interior from inside the hollow body and because of the great seal, can't get out.

Additional comments:
At first I put everything in ziploc bags.... but apprently i had less than perfect sealing bags, moisture just went into the bags also after months and months. That's when I knew there was more to it than trapping moisture in my airconditioned house. These type of firesafes would have moisture problems in Phoenix.

I haven't' spent enough time to find a proper alternative but I definitely don't want anything that doesn't detail what's inside the body.

Get a lock box, or a cash box they'd use in stores. You can get them from Office Depot. They're plain plastic or metal boxes that come with combination latches or keys. You can usually pull out the slats or trays and line it with foam, velvet, contact paper, whatever you like (anything is better than the bare metal. Then you can just slip it in a drawer, under your bed, or in a close and even if someone comes across it, they can't get into it.

It'd probably be best to store insertable toys in their own little bags just so soft one don't end up sticking or ones with batteries don't end up leaking if the batteries go bad.

Clean them everytime after, but refer to the suggested methods from each individual manufacturer so you can don't damage them and ensure they last long.

I'd recommend getting a small lock box, rather than a more traditional safe. A lot of them are combination-based, rather than keyed, and they're a fairly cheap way to secure money. This link is to Amazon -- lock boxes under $25 with 4+*. It can be broken into with the right tools but it takes time and effort.

And some of these options are portable but big enough to store cash only or some, like this one, could store a lot of valuables. I have this one and while it's a bit heavy (about 1 1/2 lbs) it fits easily/comfortably into a tote purse, backpack, or a nice laptop case (the sort with a second pocket for books). It's also semi-waterproof, if you want to carry around a water bottle, but you should definitely plug up the cord access hole if you do that. Mostly it can be banged around a lot so I can take it anywhere, which is the whole reason I have it.

The lock itself will be the easiest part, assembling the cage is harder. Typically you assemble the base ring behind the balls, slide the cage on in front of the balls, and there's a pylon you slide the lock through that connects it all. If he gets erect, either wait it out or "discourage" it (ice, pain on it or elsewhere, etc).

Lumping all this together. Get Kik, Skype, or just good old text messaging to keep in contact. Since this is at least new to you, I recommend it. Some guys like no contact during lockup, some do, err on contact.

As for an emergency key, those are generally considered a good idea. I'd recommend a realtor lockbox he can keep the key in that you set the code for. Though I have seen more portable solutions like those numbered tags through a Tic Tac container holding the key (can't get to the key without breaking a uniquely numbered seal).

Just bought a house! Now I'm looking for a document safe that protects from fire, water, and unauthorized access. Wirecutter recommends Honeywell 1104. Online reviews suggest that it's reliable against fire and water, but I've read complaints about the hardware, suggesting that it's either easy to break into or the key will break. The other option is u could get a Smart padlock and a box to lock your keys in. Then your GF just sends u one time use codes if she feels like u deserve some freedom. Then u FaceTime or Skype so she can watch u lock them back up again. This option has a bit more expensive a start up fee but would be cheaper in the long run depending on how often she lets u out.

For counterfeit bills, you can just get one of those testing pens that you've probably seen some stores use. I'm pretty sure Staples carries these in store if you want to just pick one up locally. Those are plenty good enough. You're not going to get a master counterfeiter trying to buy your old bike.

For the transfer, I don't know about NJ, but in PA there are "Auto Tags" places all over that function as notaries and will handle everything for you: title transfer, DMV registration, etc. However, they do charge their own fees on top of whatever the normal DMV fees are, so you'll have to make sure the seller is ok with that. Also, at least in PA, you must have proof of insurance to register, so make sure the seller has contacted an insurance company beforehand and has it ready to go.

In addition to increasing your privacy, some of these safes provide water-proofing and fire-proofing for your journal. On the other hand if a burglar visits your home (or your have a druggie in your family) she will assume the safe is full of valuables and steal it.

Craigslist. Meet during the day in a coffee shop/restaurant or inside of a mall where you know there are security cameras. Parking lots should be avoided simply because it allows for an easy exit if they try to grab and go. Make sure YOU pick the place. Take a friend as well. If they don't show up with the exact amount of money you agreed upon just walk away.

Count the money several times and buy yourself this to make sure it isn't funny money.
If the buyer starts giving you shit for checking the currency don't worry about it, you'll never see that person again. Don't hand over the goods(which your friend is holding) till you got the full amount and have checked/counted it.

Get childproofing on at least one of your house doors so she can not lock you out. A flip lock has helped prevent my kid from leaving the home from my main door, and I've got child proofing on the lock for my second door which he can not operate yet. For inner doors use the Door Monkey high up that she can not reach (no installation needed for these). Also, consider getting a key lock box for your house key for the day she figures out how to bypass the child locks and locks you out. I've got mine in the garage so it isn't exposed to the elements. I've got a family member who was locked out by their kid so I learned from that!

One thing that has worked really well with my son is that I'll ask him (if i.e. he is refusing to leave the park), if he wants me to carry him or if he wants to walk, or i.e. if he wants to put on his shoes or if he needs me to. He'll usually want to do it himself then even if he'd been objecting before.

Another thing I learned from a family member is that you need to be careful how you let your kid treat you (and be aware that your kid is watching how you treat others and doesn't understand sarcasm at this young age). For example, I used to let my son take my tablet any time he wanted to play with it when I was using it (because I would just go to the laptop then so it wasn't a big deal to me). But then he started taking things from other people -- now I require him to ask me politely for it, and wait for me to hand it to him instead of letting him just take it.

I use one of these. You set your own combination, lock it to your car and you're good to go. It even works with cars like a prius with smart keys, just don't lock it in a place to close to the door otherwise someone could just walk up and put their hand in the door to open it.

i've got one of these lockboxes. it works pretty well, but read the reviews. the metal on the dials corrodes pretty easily from salt water, so i keep a can of wd40 in my car and a rag and spray it down periodically. it is big enough to hold an electronic key fob, so long as it isn't giant.

You know those paper tubes that coins come in from the bank? You put those in the machine, and then pour change in it, and it automatically sorts the change and fills the correct tubes instead of you filling the tubes by hand.

They're awesome, and they're expensive as hell. This is the "go-to" automatic roller, it goes for about $200, but if you have so much change that you need an automatic roller, it'll probably pay for itself pretty quick since banks will exchange rolled coins for cash for free (no 9+% fee from coinstar).

I know what you mean as I recently had this problem. I ended up going with this. I'm sure you saw it, and it's another one that has comment(s) about the keys. I think overall the safe is high quality and the key seems quite sturdy to me. I can't imagine breaking it like that one guy did. It's very heavy, but I'm quite happy with it.

Yeah I would just like to see more new content, be that in form of unique stories, physique shots, programming, maybe even a kind of best practices sort of thing. Like for example - I want to get a chair with arm rests and one of those serving trays for a clean surface and a small lockbox to keep all my daily pinning supplies as well as a MTWTF pill box available but not in sight of roommates or family that comes over. This might be larger than you're looking for, but is designed to slide under a bed and accommodates a padlock or luggage lock. This one is smaller, but I'm not sure if it will fit a crop. You can use IKEA SKUBB series for easy dividers that will stay put. I recommend a soft cotton washcloth to wrap around any "clinkety" restraints and perhaps a soft cloth bag to stuff them in if you plan to be moving the box -- otherwise it might start to make noise.

The charging port is going to be tricky, but most of these are simple enough that you could drill a hole in the lid to pass the charger through.

I use something like one of these two things to keep an extra house key, emergency cash, my insurance info and expired license (as ID only of course) in the car. To tack onto this it might be wise to keep all meds in a locking medicine cabinet that only you and your DH have the keys to. Not only will that prevent any accidents with your LO, /u/whtbrd, but it will also keep any guests- wanted or unwanted- from shopping around in your medicine cabinet [that way they can't steal any or tamper with any]. If anyone other than you or DH need something out of the cabinet either you or DH will go get it for them.

Poke around on amazon for a bit. It doesn't have to be something like this either, it could be something more like this, this, or even this or this as long as it locks well enough to keep unwanted people out. It doesn't need to be fancy. Don't even bring up the fact your worried that she might tamper with your meds to your DH, just tell him that your locking all the medications in the house- including yours- up so LO can't get to them and show him where the key is going to be kept.

Doesn't steel rust? Besides, is it really a concern to spend like $20 for a couple of titanium plates to store what could potentially be worth thousands of dollars? But yeah sure, anything works. Just write it somewhere durable, and not paper.

I have one that hand cranks and separates them into rollable stacks. My kids love it.

Depending on how often you plan to do it, you can start with the basics:

A pair of gloves (disposable or professional) will keep the dirt off your hands, as CRH can be very dirty.

Cloth bags (or other strong bags) can be used to dump the coins you plan to return to the bank.

For storing your coins, you can go one of three main ways: You can place them in an album like this one, you can put them in a coin folder like this one, or you can place them in 2x2 cardboard coin protectors, then place them in 2x2 plastic sheets to display or put them in 2x2 cardboard protector storage boxes, like these.

I use fleshlights, which are larger toys at about 10" long and 4" in diameter. I also like buying larger bottles of lube because they're cheaper, so I needed a large toybox.

Additionally, since it's meant for holding files, I think it looks a little less conspicuous. The lock and handle are kind of pieces of crap, but it's incredibly cheap still works, I'm satisfied with it for the price.

Don't search for safes, those are huge, heavy, thick, and made to withstand actual abuse. You just don't want people accidentally coming across a sex toy. Search lockboxes. They are boxes, with locks. Things like this.

Alternately, /u/bustnuts100's suggestion for a toolbox is a great one. My only concern would be that people might need a tool and reach for it.

I'd say to go with the lockbox, and if asked, just say it has some bullshit in it that you can say is sentimental but no one else would really care about other than you. Photos of your grandparents as kids or something.

Related side note / possible solution:

I always have a key storage box outside of my place. This way, friends or out of town guests can have access to my house when needed or I can let my self in if I get locked out. Plus I can take it with me when I move.

In your situation - if you live together for much longer - you could agree not to give out keys, but the code to the box when needed. Then change the code as needed to prevent access to those who should not have it.

Get a lockbox, scramble the code, take a picture without looking, and use Emlalock.

Honestly, if I were your keyholder, I'd keep you denied one day per grammatical error in your post. I lost count at 10, so just round up to two weeks in case I missed a few. You're twenty-fucking-two; you're capable of writing properly.

In the case of the Emlalock (for self lockers) - they take a picture without looking, and upload that to the site, lock the key in, and spin the dials. Once the allotted time expires, the site shows you the picture of the key.

I haven't had any issues, but I am not in a large city. I do carry a counterfeit pen that has a UV light on it. Normally, I check a few bills with the pen and look for the watermark or use the UV light.

If you have a lot of coins, get one of these. It will pay for itself in the time it saves you. I do this every few months while watching a TV show and deposit the coins in my account.

Também tem gente que automatiza, por exemplo usando um Masterlock para guardar as chaves e simplesmente dar a senha para o hóspede chegar a hora que quiser, pegar a chave, usar a casa e devolver para o cofre-cadeado quando for embora. Tem muita gente que é mais confiante e simplesmente fala que a chave vai estar dentro da caixa de correspondência, mas vai depender do grau de segurança da cidade que você está.

Como toda fonte de renda, vai exigir certa dedicação e atenção. O Airbnb é meramente uma plataforma de anúncio, intermediação de pagamento e resenha/pontuação, e não um intermediador de guesthouses.

One thing that may work for your situation is buying a lockbox (this is the one I use, but it is a little flimsy and can probably be forced open) and storing your medication in it, then hiding it in your room. This one may be a little better.

Your guess is as good as mine. It was (at the time) a brand new "waterproof" fire safe. According to a hygrometer I have in the room where it's kept (part of a $20 clock, so probably not the most accurate of instruments, but still), it's about 27% humidity right now, which isn't exactly Phoenix, but it's a far cry from "humid."

A glance at an Amazon review (actually, a web search for "waterproof safe moisture," that found a Honeywell review) suggests it may be a common issue with at least Honeywell specifically:
