For your reference and for the sake of transparency, here are the specialists whose opinions mattered the most in our ranking.
There are a ton of good anime out there, and a lot that also have good dubs, but I'm going to start with what I think are the best of the best, to avoid overwhelming anyone.
-Cowboy Bebop. This scene is from the movie, not the series, but the series is even better! This masterpiece was not only my favorite anime for over a decade and STILL to this day the #1 gateway anime for the uninitiated, but also the first time I felt like I might be selectively gay. It's not freely watchable online, but that doesn't matter because you should have this one in your collection anyway. Still, here's a decent upload of episode 1. If you want the rest (and you should), do the right thing.
-FLCL has one of my favorite scenes to listen to on full blast. Also known as Fooly Cooly, it's rare to see such a good dub for something so off the wall, but it's a good thing considering it's one of the best ever anime made, dub or not! It's also only 6 episodes long, so you'll be at the end (and starting your second viewing, which you'll need to understand the plot) in no time! They're even available free on Hulu!
-Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (don't watch the related videos if you want to avoid spoilers). Not only is it a great series to begin with like everything else I'm listing here, it's also another great gateway series for sci-fi or cop drama fans, just like Cowboy Bebop. Plus, the ENTIRE English dub of the first series is available for free on Manga Entertainment's channel. It's completely legit, they own the license and host some of their shows for free as a courtesy to combat piracy and market their work. When you're done watching that, get hype to know that there's still another full series called 2nd GIG (with an even BETTER intro, R.I.P. Origa) and a movie called Solid State Society.
-Fullmetal Alchemist:Brotherhood. Don't watch the series that isn't labeled "Brotherhood," and when you watch Brotherhood, skip episode 1. Why not? The original series was made before the manga was finished, and it's a totally different story after the first half (they caught up when the manga was still only about 1/4 done). Brotherhood is twice as long, but started airing at the same time the manga was ending, so it follows the original (and much better) story. Since the first 13 episodes or so of Brotherhood basically retell the exact same events as the original series, the makers decided to show off with a totally original first episode which didn't happen in either the manga OR the original series, and it's completely throwaway filler that doesn't service the plot whatsoever. It even spoils some things for any first-time watcher that can pick up on foreshadowing. That's why the best place to start is Brotherhood Episode 2. However, don't let all those stipulations turn you off! The 63 episodes that you will see if you follow my instructions tell an incredible story that everyone can enjoy. This series is the best at gripping you emotionally in a way that's not forced or unwelcome. It has excellent action without defying its own rules, excellent characters without falling back on references and templates, and excellent drama without making you roll your eyes. This is the sort of storytelling that lesser shows only manage to imitate. Unfortunately, it only seems possible to watch up to episode 4 online without Netflix, and Netflix only has most of the series, not the whole thing.
-Last Exile (not "Fam, the Silver Wing", the original). It's not quite as good as Fullmetal Alchemist. In fact, in my opinion this is the weakest of my list, but it still deserves to be on here. Like I said above, this list isn't just good dubs, it's good dubs for anime that were already good to begin with. It gets a bit weird near the end, but the presentation, writing, and drama throughout are among the best. If you don't mind the Little Miss McGuffin, you may even like this one better than the rest, so try it out! Just be prepared for a major shark jump in the last episode. To be fair, that episode also has TWO of the most heartbreaking moments in all of anime, so if you don't mind being incredibly sad, it may be a net gain. It also has one of the most beautiful credits sequences in the entire medium. If you'd like to watch the whole thing freely, FUNimation hosts this series subbed on their channel, but even better, the ENTIRE dub is free on Hulu, no membership required! You do have to sit through a lot more ads than Youtube though.
-Hellsing Ultimate. Holy shit, Hellsing Ultimate. You want METAL? You don't get much more metal than motherfucking Alucard! You want limiter releases? How about multiple levels of limiters to release? How about the first level makes you an indestructible god of battle? Where do you go from there? You want gore? How about half of someone's head getting shaved off cell by cell like it was against a sanding belt? Ready for Being a Badass 101? Note: Hellsing ULTIMATE, not just the old "Hellsing". This is another Fullmetal Alchemist situation.
-Kill La Kill. As LordRaison said (same link), the dub is pretty good in general, with the exception of Senketsu. Senketsu unfortunately sounds like he isn't invested in what's happening at all, totally the opposite of the original. Besides that one problem, it's a good dub, which is more than I can say for Gurren Lagann. Gurren Lagann currently my favorite anime of all time. It's the one that finally unseated Cowboy Bebop after its decade-long reign, but the dub is just awful, and it doesn't make me happy to say it ;_; Definitely watch Gurren Lagann, but watch it subbed. If you need another reason to watch Kill La Kill, listen to this and then realize that that song goes with the character in the video. The dub isn't easily available anywhere online, but the subbed version (which is just as fantastic as Gurren Lagann) is on Netflix and Crunchyroll.
-Spice and Wolf. It's a half romance, half slice of life, half fantasy, half sports anime, if you consider economics a sport. It definitely won't be to everyone's liking, but there are few better waifus in the world than Holo the Wise Wolf. It's not often you get a respectable, distinguished performance from an actress, since the roles they're hired for in this medium are rarely as respectable or distinguished as Holo herself. Of course, there's nothing respectable about being perfect. Holo is no perfect fantasy, cute in every way she's not capable. She's stuck-up, jealous, needy, high-maintenance, and a fiend for alcohol, but also intelligent, confident, compassionate, funny, and adorable. As ultimate proof that it's not just a show about a moe girl, the male lead is a fully developed character himself. Lawrence is naive but charismatic, ambitious yet realistic, manipulative but also generous. If you want an anime that respects both genders without worshiping them, this is it. Are you ready to leave behind your old waifu? Hulu pulls through again, with the entire first season.
-Dragonball Z (the FUNimation dub), obviously. Everyone's either seen it, or will see it eventually, so get on with it.
And of course, Ghost Stories (NSFW). Sorry! I mean Ghost Stories (really NSFW). SHIT, GHOST STORIES (really, REALLY NSFW)! Fuck it, Ghost Stories.
I actually posted something about this a while ago. I don't think the link you sent me is exactly the thing that I'm talking about, but the price seems correct. It is basically the 9 Bluray bundles which cost about 100$ each, they contain 2 to 3 episodes, a book and generally some printed pictures. But if you really want to buy them, I would suggest going for this whole bundle for half the price of all the individuals grouped. 350€ vs ~900€, you do the counting :')
The individuals look like this : http://www.amazon.fr/Steins-Gate-1-Blu-ray/dp/B004TK5YOE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1421488997&sr=8-1&keywords=steins+gate
The complete bluray series is unfortunately not available on Amazon.fr, but on Amazon.com it is always at a good price (it was about 25$ during Christmas) http://www.amazon.com/Steins-Gate-Complete-Classic-Blu-ray/dp/B00KU3Y5CG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1421489071&sr=8-1&keywords=steins+gate
However it seems that there are lots of bundles for the series.. There are of course the complete series in DVD, then in Bluray + DVD, then you have for 60$ the 12 first episodes in bluray, then you have 2 to 3 episodes in the collector bundle.. Arg it's seriously painful thinking about all the possibilities, but mostly I think that's really unnecessary. Either you go for the complete bluray series or for the collector bluray series.. I wouldn't want to have just one volume of the collector, just to say I have something collector.
Like I said, I didn't had any hatred for her, as I was already attached to her since the anime. But I also think that's what I would have probably felt like, if I had done the VN first... or not... Come on, that's KURISU we're talking about! :D You could probably clarify something for me, is there really a difference between the Kurisu ending and the True Ending, besides the length of course? I always thought that it was the same put cut from the true happy ending, but I read somewhere recently that is was only in the Kurisu Ending that they clearly express their feelings to each others.. I couldn't do the True Ending by myself after a lot of tries, so I finally watched it on Youtube (I know what you're going to say, don't bother : SACRILEGE!). Actually, in every endings Okabe breaks down in a certain way.. It never really ends up good except for the real True Ending. I'd really like to know how the scripting of the scenario went, how they decided which end was the best for the story and stuff like that. Maybe they voted to say "hey, which character do you like the most?" "Raise hands for Kurisu" wave of hands raising in the air I also think they figured out that if they would put a depressing ending, we wouldn't ever be able to continue exploring the series.
I guess I'll just be waiting for the good moment to have one :) But definitely on my top list, I have those two you suggested me, and the chubby Kurisu! Ok I get it, Figmas are cool, I'll try give it a look. I think they are a little bit cheaper aren't they? The REAL point I can give them, is the fact that you can do stop-motion (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEUj5EgMmrY) and THAT is REALLY COOL! I couldn't say better, my phrase is always "More Steins;Gate, is good Steins;Gate", I know it's not correct, but who cares you get the point and I think you feel the same too :)
Her Tsundere side makes her even cute if you ask me. I know it's something most of the people hate, because they see that all the time but I don't think so. I don't see that many tsundere (actually I don't watch a lot of animes, I should have seen like a dozen in my whole life and that counts Dragon Ball+Z as one). Yeah, I think Kurisu could be the more mature in the series, even though Okabe says Mayuri hides that pretty well behind her dummy behavior. I, too, can say I was always a way ahead of my class, even though now I can't say that since we're 1300 haha.
It's clearly not a "good" fighting game, we're not talking about Street fighter nor Mortal Kombat here, it's some sort of Dead or Alive with characters you like. But the thing that really made me curious is a certain 8bit mode a little bit like a Street of rage (if you know) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHb26G5MSME
And hey they even bothered putting the music of Steins;Gate in 8bits, what else? :D You can use the future gadget to fight, what else? EDIT : Ok actually the 8bit game is another DLC for that game, or even a standalone I don't even know, but basically you have to pay 10€ + 5€ for the Kurisu pack.. seriously?
What's this dude's name? He's a genius, the Hans Zimmer of Japan!
Also I would like you opinion on something, I told you about my willing to do a fanfilm of Steins;Gate and I'm more and more thinking about adapting the lightnovel The Distant Valhalla. Like I told you, I'm currently translating it for my friends, and if they like it (they are also my scenarists and actors) I would really love to do that. I wouldn't do just a basic adaptation, but I already thought about a lot of details and things to add to the main plot of the novel. But to really talk about it, I'll wait for you to read it yourself ;)
I'm sorry I missed the stream again. I woke up far too late, I ended up watching what is now one of my favorite movie : The Machinist.
I'm really late replying but I hope still useful! I looked at the series you mentioned your giftee liking and used my knowledge of anime to go on Amazon and pick out 10 other series or movies they might also like, along with why I think these might be a good option. Your person seems to really like edgy and highly dramatic pieces with a scifi or fantasy flair. That's been my favorite for 15 years! A lot of these are a bit older; I am taking the gamble that with as many newer pieces listed, your person hasn't watched a lot of backlog, and therefore may have missed some really good shit.
Ghost in the Shell is a cyberpunk classic. Older, yes, but for anyone who likes drama and scifi, this is a good choice. It focuses on a classic mind experiment: if you can move your brain freely among cybernetic parts and bodies, what is really "you"?
Steins;Gate is what instantly springs to mind for someone who also likes Psycho Pass. And I mean instantly. Fans of one almost invariably love the other. A tightly-plotted time travel thriller.
Revolutionary Girl Utena is a bit older, often controversial, and an absolute work of art. There's a strong chance your giftee is a girl based on the other series they like, but even if not, Utena is still a solid choice. Just be careful on this; sending it to a conservative person could backfire badly. I rather doubt that is the case with Attack on Titan and Shiki, but just to be safe. It's strange and beautiful...and stylish beyond all doubt.
Black Lagoon is anime's answer to a Hollywood big budget action movie. Comedic, violent, and unforgettable, it deserves a far wider audience than it's had. Almost every anime fan I know who's seen it has loved it.
Akira is without a doubt one of the most famous anime movies to ever be created. Animated without CG in the 1980s, the quality of its hand-drawn special effects has yet to be equalled by almost any other production to this day. For someone used to today's slick computer assisted animation, it's still mindblowing. Akira is often credited with being just as important as Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon in starting the anime boom of the 1990s, and this is a very nice edition.
Also in the classic scifi category we have Serial Experiments Lain, a show whose points on technology and the internet and the singularity still ring true today. Moody and thought-provoking with masterful use of color and a fantastic soundtrack.
Literally no adult-targeted anime is as famous and well-beloved as Cowboy Bebop. This space western with the jazz soundtrack is a perennial favorite on Cartoon Network Adult Swim, is often suspected as a major influence behind Firefly, and is one of the most popular anime in the US of all time... And it's hitting bluray this month.
Summer Wars should probably come with a bluray device as a tech test. It's that beautiful. A tale of virtual reality and the family and friends behind the characters, Summer Wars is an unforgettable movie which, despite being intensely Japanese, deserves a slot on any videophile's shelf.
My total wildcard pick is Mushishi. Beautiful and dream-like, like a series of 25 minute oases from ordinary life. If this is in fact a slice of life, these timeless Japanese almost fairy tales are like no life you've seen. Some call it slow and overhyped. I call it perfection. At any rate, this isn't at all what I'd get as an only gift; it's more a wildcard filler for a $20 other series. If you want my actual top pick.....
Baccano! is my final and top pick. It's really hard to go wrong with this. This rollicking action anime about immortal Prohibition-era Mafiosi in the United States is one of the best and most underrated anime of all time. Humor, violent action, mystery, drama, good characters, good animation, good music... It has them all. It's chronically overshadowed by its more popular sister series Durarara, and that makes me sad. But Durarara isn't easily available outside streaming, and this glorious madcap piece of anime is. Plus it has at least one theme in common with everything your person listed liking. You know what to do.
A few films I would check out:
Films I would avoid:
Films that you should watch with friends for some laughs:
If you need help finding these films, here are some links for some packs on amazon that can fill up your collection pretty quickly.
I hope this helped in some way. Have fun watching them. If you have anymore questions, don't hesitate to ask.
EDIT: I should add that Godzilla vs Gigan, and Godzilla vs Megalon are two films that are great to watch with friends as well.
EDIT 2: Heck, watch all the Godzilla films with your friends, each one has something special to enjoy.
Not all of these are "parenting" books, but they get at various aspects of what you might be looking for/need to help you prepare (in no particular order):
Edit: I wanted to add brief descriptions and links (I was on my phone yesterday when I posted this.) I also added in the last book listed.
I have literally read hundreds of parenting/child dev. books. I consider these to be the best of the best in terms of books that cover each of their respective topics in depth, from almost all perspectives, in as neutral of a way as possible, so that you can then make decisions about which more extreme (I don't mean that in a bad way) parenting styles might work for you and your family (e.g. attachment parenting, natural vs. medicated birth, etc.)
Welcome to the sub! I'm sure you'll really enjoy yourself here! Everybody is so nice.
As for the contest, I like to sew, doodle, and find other crafty things to try when I feel creative. I even took a lost wax casting class and made some pendants and rings! I have been doing these things since I was a kid and it helps to unwind me. I made a silly monster for my dad for Christmas and this lovey bear for my grandma just because I had been wanting to make her something.
I do like to do other creative things like sing, play music, and make up fun stories.
If I were to be chosen, I would love to have a copy of My Neighbor Totoro to inspire creativity in drawing and story creation
or a Klingon translation ring to inspire secret messages between friends
or a Kalimba to inspire musical fun!
(If I could choose a favorite, it would be Totoro.)
Thank you very much for the contest and I hope you have fun browsing the forum and making new friends!
I don't think this has anything to do with the PS4 specifically, but it is definitely a good idea to customize your TV's settings. Usually 'Movie' mode or some equivalent will be significantly better right away, and then you can play around with it as you see fit. Like some suggested, AVS forums has some good information if you search for your TV, and reviewers like CNET, digital trends, etc generally post their recommended settings in the review. The best option of course is to get your TV professionally calibrated by an ISF calibrator, but that can cost around 300. If you're really interested in getting the best picture out of your TV but don't want to pay for calibration, I suggest getting a Disney WoW or Spears and Munsil calibration disc. They walk you through the calibration process step by step and give you test patterns and footage so you can adjust your settings till it looks right to you. The Disney one is especially useful for beginners, I've linked both below.
Disney WoW: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0045ASBLG/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1419794316&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SY200_QL40
Spears and Munsil: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00CKWI13O/ref=pd_aw_sims_1?pi=SS115&simLd=1
First off, welcome! :)
There is already a ton of good info in the links, and other's posts, but I want to emphasize, as you've mentioned:
Starting Strength, the book, and Starting Strength, the DVD.
The book does a better job than any other program I've seen in explaining exactly what to do, and how to do it. The DVD shows you what good form looks like.
Sure, you can get both from links and YouTube, but as far as I'm concerned, this is some of the best possible money spent, in terms of return on investment. You'll get a good beginner's program, and you'll see exactly what the motions are you need to do.
A good trainer is a big plus, no doubt. The problem is finding a good trainer, and not one that will just try and push hard for you to do a 30-minute circuit and call it a day. And this really is a problem. It took me months upon months to finally find the guys I wanted to train with. The amount of bull pushed in the fitness world is astounding.
My advice for supplements (beyond a basic multi, fish oil, & D) is simple: For your first year of training, ignore them.
First comes form, technique, and newbie gains. That will fill out an entire year. There's enough to learn that you won't get bored. Honest. :)
Eat however you enjoy most that gets you the daily calories/macros you need. Timing details are when you're searching for the last half a percent of gain. Right now is not the time for that. Right now is time to bask in your newbgains and nail down the basics, because the rapid progress a beginner makes is an awesome feeling!
This is my all time favorite Disney movie!
I love the scene when Olaf gets impaled and says..... "oh look, i've been impaled. Hehah"
also when he says, "Hi! my name's Olaf and I like warm hugs!"
Olaf is my favorite part of that movie.
well, that and the fact that
**** SPOILER ALERT!!!! STOP READING IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT!!!!
When anna saves elsa instead of going for the usual disney ending of true loves kiss. I was so happy when they portrayed the act of true love as her saving her sister. It was so touching and heart warming.
It made me think about why I joined the army and how my love for my own sister and other family was a big part of my reason to join. it was great.
My favorite song is hakunnah matata. it helps me destress. sometimes i catch myself saying it around annoying people at home and work.
Well this is interesting.
On my main list it is a gift card, but underneath that is an XBox 360 carrying case I need it because I take my xbox around a lot and only have an old gymbag to throw it in.
On my health list is Kettle Bells I used to use them at the gym a lot and really liked them, would like a set of my own someday
On my movie list is Thor: The Dark World because I love comics and the movie was fucking awesome. Plus, Chris Hemsworth is pretty much the only dude I would go gay for.
On my "Wishful Thinking" list is Marvel Phase One blu-ray collection because god dammit I love Marvel movies
And on the stuff for my kids list I do not have a highest priority item. Its just loaded with kids movies and crayons. They aren't all choosy like I am :p
SO.. what's the super secret contest?
Honestly man I would look at something like this:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung-60-class-59-9-10-diag--plasma-1080p-600hz-hdtv/8182045.p?id=1218864995544&skuId=8182045&st=samsung%20plasma&cp=1&lp=3
Its not as thin as the F8500, but still produces a great picture. There are a few reasons why it's so cheap:
Whatever you decide, it is imperative that you set it up properly for the room. You have 3 options here:
http://www.imagingscience.com/ If you are in Florida, I would be more than happy to help out!
http://www.amazon.com/Spears-Munsil-Benchmark-Calibration-Edition/dp/B00CKWI13O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1407264476&sr=8-1&keywords=spears+and+munsil
3)Learn how to calibrate and do it yourself. This will cost you a significant amount of time and money
The room does have a decent amount of ambient light AND the walls are light. Plasma is glass so glare could be an issue during the day, but it will look awesome in the dark. A bias light would help too! You can make your own for pretty cheap, or they are available for purchase.
Don't hesitate to hit me back up if you have further questions!
That sucks about your testosterone levels. If you're having hormonal issues, that is probably the root of all your problems. Though, you didn't much about what you tried to do in terms of diet and exercise, and being that you're only 17 years old, I presume you aren't all that knowledgeable about fitness yet (at least I sure as hell didn't when I was your age).
First thing to do is calculate how many calories you need to eat to gain weight. Go to iifym.com and plug in your body stats into the iifym calculator and you'll get the numbers and macros for what you want.
Then get a calorie tracker, like myfitnesspal, and make sure you hit your calories and the macros. This is important obviously because it will help you reach your fitness goals, but also because a simple thing like eating enough calories and fat/carb/protein is pretty damn rewarding when you're in such a low place; every small thing you accomplish will seem like a big victory.
The next big step you need to do is get on a strength program like Starting Strength (SS wikia) or any program that incorporates compound lifts, I say SS because I personally know they teach you how to do the moves. I recommend just buying the DVD from amazon for $22.46 (maybe try the Amazon Prime 30 day trial and get it in 2 days). The DVD has videos of how to do the moves properly with instruction from Sensei Rip himself.
The point here is that it's all planned out for you, all you have to do is go to the gym (get access to a squat rack if you don't already) and learn how to do the moves, and do it on the day they tell you to. Personally, I trained this with a buddy who had this program years back, and after adopting the deadlift into my later workouts, I gained 5lbs (150lbs->155lbs) in about 2 months doing it 3 times a week and I wasn't even dieting properly, I was just a bro here pls sho mercy. Those compound movements are no joke, they recruit a shitload of muscles and when you increase the weight you only get bigger, which is why so many people speak so highly of them.
If no one has a solid solution, give it a try, if you already did, then props to you for knowing how to diet and lift at 17 years old (srs, all I did when I was your age was bicep curls lulz). These are, of course, external physical/mental solutions; when it comes to hormones that's an internal chemical and physiological issue which can be more complicated than we think.
Disney's WOW is the easiest one to use, but doesn't give a lot of explanation, or any extra stuff.
Digital Video Essentials is the granddaddy of calibration discs. Starting with LaserDisc calibration tools. The BD is good, very very comprehensive. Gives you plenty of screens to calibrate, and evaluate (something the Disney disc doesn't have), the quality of your TV, and lots of history and exposition on why its the way it is, and info to help you purchase a better TV in the future. However, many people find this exposition, confusing, unnecessary and boring, and just want the test patterns.
Lastly Spears & Munsil calibration Blu-Ray. This is the newest one, I haven't used it, but I've heard it strikes a balance between Disney's WOW and DVE in terms of content and information.
This will get you all pretty close at home. These are all worth it, no matter the quality of your TV, or the room in which you use it. Professional calibration is simply better, and closer, however; unless you bought a very very high end TV its likely a professional cannot actually calibrate your TV to system standards, so its not really worth it. The other discs will get you close.
A word on TV calibration. TVs are purposely made to be out of system standards. There is no good reason with HD video standards, that any TV should come from the factory displaying anything else but system standard calibration. Here's the dirt on it. Consumers don't want accurate representation. Accurate representation doesn't subjectively look as good. It looks accurate. Consumers want brighter washed out contrast, and over saturated bright colors. So lower and middle end TVs are sold to show that off, because you'll buy them.
The worst way possible to buy a TV is to go to the store and look at which one has the best picture. TVs are typically sold under bright fluorescent lighting. Exactly the type of lighting you probably never watch your TV under. Lighting makes a huge different to picture quality perception. Which is why the Magnolia Room is darker.
i would never ask or ever expect anyone to ever get this for me, but it's most definitely the item on my wishlist that i want most! comic books have always been an important part of my life, as seeing superheroes gave me hope and provided me with a distraction when i went through tougher times. now that marvel has this whole cinematic universe there's not much i love more. the movies make me so happy, and i could watch them ten times in one day and still be happy :) quite simply they're a must have for me, i'm hoping to get enough money from my birthday to get them! my username was chosen when i was in high school and discovered fall out boy :p i play bass, and love pete wentz, so my name became tomrwentz (my name is tommy)! you're incredibly sweet for having a contest such as this <3
> You literally just calculated the cost of only the LP's.
Which is about 25% of the worth of the sets, yes. And, pretty much, the reason we have this thread in /r/vinyl right now.
> I'm not saying it's not a great value, but they are running much less in quantity than other runs of anything similar.
There's not a hard limit. They have said that there is a minimum, that they would only put things to the presses if they had at least 1,000 people who wanted to buy it. There could be 2,000, there could be 5,000. There's no cap or limit, just a minimum.
> This is the primary reason why Anime in Japan, Blu-Ray releases there, are significantly more expensive, because they run a LOT less DVD/Blu-Ray, they also recoup losses because they don't get as much on TV, and they have higher licensing costs.
This is a 20 year old series that has seen how many different runs on international cable and streaming, is critically acclaimed, and has paid for itself multiple times over. To act like Sunrise/Funimation/whoever else is somehow comign at this from a standpoint of loss is fucking laughable.
> You could expect to see about 1.5 hours of sound maximum on 2 LP's and they would likely be doing a sort of greatest hits style compilation.
Yeah, no. You, at most, can fit about 22-24 minutes of music per side of a 12" LP. If they were going to an hour and a half, you'd be look at at least 3xLP, depending on the specific layout of the tracklisting, which is still maybe another $7+/copy. They've specified a 2xLP, so it's definitely not that long.
> This is a cheap crappy box compared to what you would be getting in the one included
They specified Digipak, who is notorious for shit quality packaging and done en masse, on the cheap. Most likely, it'll be a dressed up version similar to this blu-ray set, which is even cheaper than the DVD one you linked to, which is also gouged up by a secondary seller, independent of Amazon or Funimation.
> They probably have significantly higher profit margins as a goal on top of all this extra overhead, so that will be [over-represented] on a per sale basis especially as smaller scale.
Okay, so their being dicks. Got it. Pretty sure everyone agrees on that front.
> This is an example artbook.... [s]o you go from 36 dollars to reasonably 50 or maybe even more at this point. That's not far fetched.
As for your art book argument, there are much cheaper ones, still hardback, with more pages, for even less price, even by people who still had to license the materials (Dark Horse isn't owned by Nintendo, last I heard). A good window to offer would be from $25 to $45, depending on details in production and where it's made.
Also, sucks about the wait, but yeah, you pre-ordered an art book. Congrats. Did it have a release date? Because either it didn't, you preo-ordered, and then got a release date that's months out or it had a release date announced, you preordered, and the date still hasn't come yet. Either way, yeah, that's how pre-ordering works? I've waited over a year for things like The Protomen's Act II vinyl release, which hit all sorts of snags with the pressing of the album.
> The Lithographs, mass produced, could typically be sold under 10 dollars, but if they are only a limited run, again that's probably closer to 25-30 dollars because the machine time, labor, and overhead from indirect labor is being represented in the price 100 to 1000 times more than something typical like this if it's comparing a 1,000 run versus a 100,000 or 1,000,000 part run.
At least we can somewhat agree on this part. But, at the same point, the lithographs all look the same in the sets, the only difference being what colored paper they're printed on. So, since you can reuse the same plates, it's not as expensive if each set had exclusive prints.
> They should have made one boxset collectors edition to consolidate it (screw the bookends wtf)
Agreed on that front too. PVC and resin books ends retail for $30-$40 books too.
I already did pretty much a full price breakdown over on /r/anime, so thanks for reiterating what I said, at great length, but then just proving me right?
Also, thanks for linking to that terrible graph that has absolutely 0 context attached to it. Really made me understand business more than I already did.
1.) Something that is grey.
2.) Something reminiscent of rain. It always rains when I go camping
3.) Something food related that is unusual. Tiramisu wafer cookies. Better than sex.
4.) Something on your list that is for someone other than yourself. I have a whole wishlist for other people. My boyfriend, gramdma, mom, dad, and little brother.
5.) A book you should read! Clearly. You should have read these already because they are the best books evar.
6.) An item that is less than a dollar, including shipping Not on my wishlist
7.) Something related to cats Leopards are big cats.
8.) Something that is not useful, but so beautiful you must have it.
9.) A movie everyone should watch at least once in their life. Because it's the best trilogy of all time.
10.) Something that would be useful when the zombies attack. To whack them in the head and the use the pick to smash their brains out. And it's foldable so it will fit in a backpack.
11.) Something that would have a profound impact on your life and help you to achieve your current goals. I'm a student and I practically live in the library most of the school year. I need a laptop because the computers at school are SO outdated.
12.) One of those pesky Add-On items.

19.) Something related to your current obsession, whatever that may be. Harry Potter is always an obsession.
[20.) Something that is just so amazing and awe-inspiring that I simply must see it. ]()
[Anything that has my real name on it.]()
Anything made in Oregon. This is a bit of a stretch but bear with me. The Bourne Triology preceeds The Bournce Legacy. Which starred Edward Norton who also starred in Fight Club. A movie based off the book who was written by none other than Chuck Palahniuk who is from Oregon & resides there.
I'll be back to finish this!
fear cuts deeper than swords
Is it okay to enter more than one and let you pick? I like so many movies its hard to choose!
I love movies because...
So, the reason i want these is because me and my sisters used to watch them all the time and it was one of the only times we got along and had a lot of fun. It brings such good memories and we always have fun when we watch them!
Phantom opera
Robin hood men in tights
The Princess Bride
Monty python and the holy grail
(note: Regular DVD of any of those are fine, i just saw the blueray first)
Me and my mom LOVE godzilla so this would be perfect!
And these are som of my favorite movies of all time!
Moulin Rouge
Lord of the rings box set (Im looking at the used version)
And this because i havent seen it and people say its great!
Again, feel free to choose which come in bluray and which you want to get DVD, im not picky!
Thanks again and sorry if me posting a lot of them causes a problem :D
I love movies because... They allow me to take a break, to see a story through from the beginning to the end, to imagine I'm in different place. I especially love movies where I can make my own ending, like in Inception. Or movies where things are up for debate, like Shutter Island.
First: your best starting bet would be to pick up this Showa Series Godzilla Collection as it is the best in terms of actual movies you can't get anywhere else.
Second: I'd move on to get THIS 'G' SET (used if possible to cut down the price). The reason behind getting this particular set is that it includes both "Son of Godzilla" and "G VS. MechaGodzilla" these 2 movies are extremely rare and expensive by themselves and will end up costing you more in the long run.
Third: The Heisei Series is out there and available as dual sided discs. However, "G'85" and "G vs. Biollante" have never been released in the US (assuming you are from here?). I just ordered the entire Heisei Series from Japan and converted the DVDs to Region 1. They all play great just so long as you don't mind subtitles.
Forth: All of Millennium Series is extremely easy to find and they're all pretty cheap. What you'll have the hardest time finishing is all the Showa stuff... "VS. Hedorah", "VS. Sea Monster", "VS. Gigan" are very rare and expensive... I'd hold off as long as you can with these and just check Amazon or Ebay frequently to find a good deal (which you probably won't). Personally I got down to these last few and just bit the bullet. I think I probably paid close to or around $30 for each just to complete my collection. Also, "VS. Megalon" is being released for the 1st time on DVD/BD in a couple of weeks! don't forget to pick that baby up! it's the last one I need to finish out my entire collection!
That said... with the hype surrounding Legendary's new 2014 60th anniversary remake, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if you saw a sudden resurgence in Godzilla rereleases. I'm willing to bet that if you're patient enough you MIGHT be able to get some of these harder to find titles that way.
As for your your original question about there being one big boxset? yes, it's a Japan exclusive and is about $1000 US dollars. HOPE THAT HELPS!
Hey hey a fellow writer!
I'm solely screenplays and children's books, however. Best of luck to you and all you're into!
So as to my entry for your blog:
I love reading analyses of the film industry. Where people got their start, how they rose, how they fell, how the greatest stories came together, etc.
If I win I'd LOVE Frozen!
Oh what a lovely tea party
Thanks for the contest!
Lots of good advice here, but there is ONE THING that saved our lives when my daughter was in this stage. It's this video: https://www.amazon.com/Happiest-Baby-Block-Harvey-Karp/dp/B0088Y6C0W
Watch him take exhausted parents and see the insane amazement on their faces as he takes their fussy babies and makes them calm, then fall asleep. As a dad, it's incredibly gratifying to be able to take your fussy child and calm him or her down in 5 minutes or less.
I was able to use the side/swinging technique to put her to sleep all the way up to around 12 months. I'm telling you, this method is a lifesaver. It was magical for mom, too -- I had primary baby-calming duties, and I could easily put her to sleep.
Bonus picture: me brushing my teeth with swaddled, calm munchkin, age ~3 months. Common sight in my house at the time. =)
That's just how it is. Believe it or not, Funimation's prices are actually pretty decent. Sentai is similarly priced.
If you really want to shit your pants, go look at Aniplex USA or Ponycan USA releases. Kill La Kill BD Volume 1. Release date: July 15, 2014. Episodes 1-4. ONE THROUGH FUCKING FOUR. $40.00 USD. "Oh that's just the MSRP direct from the walletfuckers, it'll be cheaper from other retailers." Nope and [Amazon link unavailable because Amazon doesn't even carry it].
You paid $30 for Steins;Gate because you bought it when they released the whole thing branded as an anime classic. I know this, because that's when I bought it. That was a rerelease. The original was offered as two split cours that came out a few months apart and each had prices higher than the classic bundle.
This is what Funimation and Sentai do, with few exceptions:
Sentai doesn't really do rereleases, instead they just regularly (but only temporarily) slash the prices of a lot of their old stock. They have a decent sale going on now, but a few months back they had drastically cut down the prices on a lot of their content, with some subtitle-only releases going for $15 per season (on BD!) and dubbed releases for $18.
There are no licensed bluray releases of the true original films. They are available on dvd though as bonus discs of the Limited Editions. https://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Episode-IV-Limited/dp/B000FQJAIW And a little loophole is that if the Limited Edition is the full screen version then the bonus disc original films will still be widescreen. There are apparently still some very minor changes to the original films like a couple random sound effects but I've never gone through and picked them out. Although I dont suppose it matters since there's apparently nothing to compare it to other than the original 35mm print. Apparently no home video was ever released of the original films as they 100% exactly appeared in the theater. So the story goes.
As for the bluray Special Editions of the original trilogy episodes 4-6 I actually prefer Empire Strikes Back in the Special Edition. Every single change I think adds to the story and is very well done. Episodes 4 and 6 special editions are basically pure garbage. Episode 4 has a reincorporated deleted scene which is interesting but very badly done although I think they did the best possible job. As a star wars fanatic I think the only thing worthwhile in the episode 4 special edition is that its now the first appearance of Boba Fett although just a cameo. Not that he ever has much more than that anyway.
And I could've swore there are actually technically two editions with added scenes. I swear I saw in the theater A New Hope that was just the THX Remastered Edition which still had one new shot of a few X-Wing Fighters approaching a planet and also put the rings around the explosions of Alderan and the Death Star. I can't find any reference to this though but I swear I saw it in Dallas at Northpark in 1995
I love her too! I have Love Actually, and Saving Mr. Banks and just watched Sense and Sensibility on Netflix the other night! I have Harry Potter on my list already but that's far too extravagant. I forgot she was the mom in Brave! and now I want cake, something with a cream cheese frosting sounds amazing. /u/bunnysoup I bit the heads off my peep bunny treats and thought of you also you're kind of swell I suppose. /u/Zoobles88 send more snaps it's always lovely to see your face! /u/kickballa we need to get to know each other better, but I can tell I'd probably like you already. =]
Thanks for the contest.
I live in CA so my favorite memory in Disneyland would have to be the first time I rode Peter Pan's Magic Flight. I was 6 years old and I thought that I was actually flying through the stars, it felt like the most amazing thing ever at the time.
I'm a horrible combination of a broke college student and a movie junkie. I like to collect all the awesome films out there. :) /u/pwolter0 and I bought a nice shelf with Christmas money so we can have a proper place for our growing collection. <3
Thank you for the contest!
Man I suck so bad at deciding what I want too..I always just tell people they don't need to get me anything or if they're insistent I ask for a gift card.
Alright..lemme put on my thinking cap..
I guess my first suggestion is obligated to be this CD because of the title..
Or there's this stinkin' freakin' cute Rilakkuma backpack/bag
If you like cats on socks there's these cute friendly kitties or if you like cats and socks but aren't happy there are these cats flipping the bird on socks
If you'd rather drown your birthday in alcohol than cute things there are these nice stemless wine glasses
If you'd rather watch movies on your birthday Howls moving castle is always a good choice
Or if you're a makeup person there's this nice set of matte lip color.
If you're more of a nail person you could get this stamper and kitty cat design nail plate together to have some crazy cute kitty nails!
I may suck at picking things for myself, but I can suggest things all day for others :p
^^even ^^if ^^I ^^may ^^or ^^may ^^not ^^be ^^bad ^^at ^^that ^^too.
Either way I hope you and /u/LadyAmpersand have amazing birthdays! Having a birthday twin is always fun c:
Amazon all the way. With the exception of 2014. I got that on Black Friday at Best Buy for $4. Just be on a look out for the [Kraken blu-rays] (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Vs-Gigan-Blu-ray/dp/B00I462XLG/ref=pd_sim_74_7?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=Q4NXP3Z44W4ZJK6AP4P4) and [The Toho Godzilla Movies Collection blu-rays] (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Vs-King-Ghidorah-Mothra/dp/B00IQAUO2A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1481679727&sr=8-1&keywords=godzilla+vs+king+ghidorah+blu+ray). The prices seem to jump to higher and lower over time. It's very inconsistent, so I just checked every other day to get the best deals. Lowest they normally around for is little over $7.
For [The Godzilla Collection] (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Collection-Vol-Yuriko-Hoshi/dp/B000VXWK86/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1481679933&sr=1-1&keywords=the+godzilla+collection) I got it used at half price, BUT IT'S ON SALE RIGHT NOW FOR PRIME USERS, SO PICK IT UP.
Godzilla 1998 and 2014 are always cheap. Even without the Black Friday deal, it's still cheap on Amazon.
Godzilla vs. Biollante is tricky. There are multiple sources on Amazon. Make sure you get it from [this one] (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Biollante-Blu-ray-Koji-Takahashi/dp/B00LVZK1LG/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1481680064&sr=1-1&keywords=godzilla+vs+biollante+blu+ray). Cheap as hell.
Then there's Son of Godzilla and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. These two are extremely hard to come by, but the way I see it, here are your options:
Last but not least is King Kong vs. Godzilla. Now you can get the official blu-ray on Amazon for a cheap price, but mind you, this doesn't have the Japanese dub, only the English dub. It is for this reason that I purchased it from sumogorilla, seeing as I only intend to watch them in Japanese.
Well, there you have it. Hopefully this will help you on your journey in collecting every Godzilla movie out there. But I'm sure there are other methods of doing so as well, so keep an eye out for any tips and information! As time passes, the prices and sources will as well. But this is how I collected the films.
Good luck!
EDIT: Typing error.
I nominate my mom! She loves watching movies with our family and since she's never seen any of the Harry Potter films, I figure this would be a good gift for her, and by extension, my entire family :) My mom is SUPER because she sacrificed her dreams of being a lawyer to be a stay at home mom and care for me and my siblings. I don't think she truly knows how much we appreciate her always being there for us.
Edit: And if that's too expensive, I know she'd like this or that.
I'm a novice swimmer, but I've been weight training for over 3 years now, and I've learned a ton about it. The most important thing I can tell you is, unless you're a fairly advanced lifter, steer away from any program that mentions the word "split," especially a "bodypart split." Beginners achieve the most strength gains by doing a fullbody routine, three days a week. You don't need to lift every day, and you don't need to spend more than an hour in the gym; in fact, early on you probably won't spend more than a half hour on each session.
I always recommend Starting Strength (book|wiki), but Stronglifts 5x5 and Greyskull LP have a good reputation as well.
I love movies because...
They are such a great way to escape. I don't often have the time to devote to sitting down and watching a movie so these days it is a real treat. I really want [Frozen] (http://www.amazon.com/Frozen-Two-Disc-Blu-ray-Digital-Copy/dp/B00G5G7K7O/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=1PRII2BIRNFS3&coliid=I2XGTWOY0IKDRY) for my girls. They haven't seen it yet. I have heard so many good things about it that and am planning a special party for it when it comes out. We have movie picnics where I spread a blanket on the floor and we have snacks and watch the movie together. Fun times. The second movie I have on my list is [The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug] (http://www.amazon.com/registry/wishlist/1PRII2BIRNFS3/ref=cm_wl_sb_o?reveal=unpurchased&filter=all&sort=date-added&layout=standard&x=15&y=12) which is also not out yet and is one I also haven't seen. My husband and I looove Tolkien. All our kids have two middle names and they all have one name inspired by Tolkien. One of my son's middle names is Thorin!
/u/lonewolfx77 hit all the main points. Just wanted to add some resources:
Some tips:
They talk about that scene, and how apparently 1 of them had to get cuticle repair after their fingers were jabbed during a reshoot of the scene, and how Bishop's actor barely got through the English version of TSA with the knives in his suitcase, etc.
On top of that, this film looks quite good in Blu Ray. And it has the 1990 special edition, which is good, as I consider that version superior to the 1986 theatrical release (I like that the deleted scene makes the leading character in Alien: Isolation canon, for one thing). And a few versions of the soundtrack.
I specifically picked a Blu Ray set which didn't have Prometheus / Covenant as I have zero interest in those films. Plus the version I got is half the price and has more special content than the more expensive version.
The 4 film version has all the same special content as the 9 disk DVD version but in Blu Ray disks, so better resolution. The 6 disk version is twice the price of the normal 4 disk version which lacks some special features. At $15 vs $30, I think the $15 is worth it since I buy movies for special content anyway.
Version with prometheus / covenant:
https://www.amazon.com/Alien-6-film-Collection-Blu-ray-Crudup/dp/B073FT8X16/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1523655578&sr=8-1&keywords=alien+blu+ray+collection
Version with only the 4 original movies but tons of special content:
https://www.amazon.com/Alien-Anthology-Aliens-Resurrection-Blu-ray/dp/B001AQO3QA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1523655578&sr=8-2&keywords=alien+blu+ray+collection
Recently bought the Alien quadrilogy to watch. This Image will give you all the movies along with the special and theatrical editions. It has a mode in the special editions that shows which scenes are extra compared to the theatrical releases. I bought mine from bestbuy for $10 which I though was a great deal considering it was all of the Alien movies (except Prometheus) in HD.
This image should get you all the movies along with the special features. What you want to look for in the descriptions is disc 5 and 6. The whole set works like a uh..set in each of the individual movies there is a mode that you can tag the special features you want to watch and when you insert disc 6 it will bring all of your tagged special features to the front. They essenstially took disc 5 and 6 out of the set and sold that as a seperate version.
Both of the quadrilogy Blu rays have the same movies, features, and interface. The first one is just missing disc 5 and 6 with all of the extra special features. Hope that helps.
EDIT: This is the amazon page.Depending on which one your looking to buy you can change the multi-format from October 2010 to October 2014 for the different versions. 2010 being the Anthology with discs 5 and 6, 2014 being the Quadrilogy with only 4 discs.
HAPPY CAKE DAY!!!
I have a ton of favorite songs, but for some reason, Concrete and Clay is sticking out right now. The song is simple, but the composition is just so tight with all the diverse instrumentation and harmonies. Also, it's in Rushmore.
ANTEATERS. SO COOL.

So Sam goes to his doctor one morning, and after a routine checkup, he sits down to have a serious checkup.
"You know," said Sam, "I've been really thinking, and I think I want to be castrated."
"What!?" exclaimed his doctor. "Are you sure? I mean this is a very serious issue and-"
"I know," Steve said, cutting his doctor off. "I thought about it a very long time, and I know I need to do it. You can't, CANT talk me out of it."
The doctor doesn't fight any more, after all, it's Sam's life. So an appointment is scheduled for soon after, and Sam is casturated. The surgery is a success, but Sam recovers in the hospital. He begins to walk again, although now he walks a bit funny. Down the hall in the hospital, he sees another man, walking the exact same way.
"So," said Sam to the another man "looks like you had the same operation as me. What made you do it?"
"Well," replied the man, "After twenty years, I decided I couldn't go without it anymore, and I just needed to be circumcised.
Sam stared blankly at the other man, and then suddenly screamed in horror "Shit! That's the word!!"
I have a few cheaper things on the list, but here's a good choice
One thing is you're warming up with too many reps too close to your work set weight. For squatting 105 on the work sets the warm-up should be more like:
You don't want the warm-ups affecting the work sets at all. It should be the right amount of reps/weight to get you in the groove but not really tax your muscles. Doing 5 reps so close to your work set is essentially like adding a 4th work set.
Like the other guy said, don't sweat it, it's day one. Lots of people are gonna have imbalances, especially with bench press because people have way more experience (and consistency) with that compared to squats. Definitely pick up the book if you can. I also found the supplemental DVD immensely helpful - he walks through all the lifts with a whole class of trainees - all ages, shapes, and sizes. You can find the DVD online if you're crafty but I think you should pony up for the 3rd edition of the book, it's a huge wealth of info.
Hard to tell since the Bluray is not out.. but I would assume i would enjoy the movie.. that leaves 3 other discs of content. I can also assume i would enjoy the HD Free Digital download...
The digital download soundtrack would be nice on my Ipod, i would enjoy that.
I may even buy
http://www.amazon.com/Marvels-The-Avengers-Four-Disc-Combo/dp/dp/B0083SBMGW
since it contains all the Avenger Movies in Bluray
Yay Movies! I would totally love to own Frozen so I can watch it with my daughter. She loves princesses and she hasn't seen this yet. We have watched youtube clips of it and listened to the music and she has been begging me to see it and I want to see it badly as well. :) Thanks for the contest! I love movies because...
Well this year in anime has had some surprises and disappointments. This was my first year of watching seasonal anime (winter 2015). The anime that had the most impact on me and made into my top 10 was the 2nd season of JJBA: SDC. My friend got me into it and I was skeptical at first but I ended up loving.
In general this year I became more enriched in anime and I've watched more anime this year than other form of entertainment in my life. I don't what I would be doing without anime if I hadn't discovered it (probably just still playing video games) but I wouldn't have had the influence of anime today. I've been learning Japanese since my 2nd year of high school (because it's offered there) so it has also greatly influenced my intake of anime.
As for what I would want I would like either Steins; Gate Blu-ray, Cowboy Bebop Blu-ray, or basically any quality wall scrolls for the Fate Series or Kara no Kyoukai Series like this, this, or [this.]
(http://www.amazon.com/Kyoukai-Fabric-Scroll-Poster-Inches/dp/B00SCZRHM4/ref=sr_1_2?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1451276748&sr=1-2&keywords=kara+no+kyoukai+wall+scroll)
Also thank you for doing this.
8700ub owner here. Simply amazing picture. Yeah, I don't think you are doing anything out of the ordinary. One thing I recommend is picking up the Disney Blu-Ray WOW calibration disc. It will help you get the best picture out of your pj.
BTW, you can't go wrong with Epson support. My first 8700 had some pink banding down the right side. They shipped one overnight for free and paid to ship the defective one back. Transaction was utterly painless. Have heard horror stories from other manufacturers.
It's not well known but this specific version of the movies:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000FQJAIW/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?qid=1427746186&sr=8-3&keywords=star+wars+episode+4&dpPl=1&dpID=51u3YmzYxNL&ref=plSrch&pi=AC_SY200_QL40
Has the original versions included on the 2nd disc as a "bonus feature"
Well worth the price, especially if you can find it used somewhere.
Edit: I'd still love to see the original unmolested versions of episodes 4-6 remastered on blu-ray
I think this and this are a great way to get your collection started. If you are looking to do Blu-Ray these double feature bundles are good too. Then just hunt down the rest. This one has a lot of the earlier ones. I've purchased individually because the sets weren't always around, I'm thinking of upgrading to blu-ray but i still love running across the ones I'm missing in places like thrift shops. Anyways. Good luck.

Today I broke my dresser by attempting to use it as a step stool to get to the top shelves in my closet. Why was I using my dresser as a step stool? Because I couldn't afford a step stool :| Which means now I get to buy a new dresser, and until then the drawers are just stacked up in the back of my closet.
So, as much as I hate my most useful gift being a gift card, a gift card would really really help put a dent into the $60+ I'll need to spend on a dresser soon.
A real, actual item that I think is very interesting (and entertaining!) is The Princess Bride <3 And for a useful item, this silicone brownie mold solves the problem of who gets the edges and whose piece is bigger :-D
Do you have an Apple TV and an iPhone/iPad? Or an iPhone/iPad with an HDMI adapter? You can use the THX Tune Up app for an easy way to do basic calibration in a pinch. - http://www.thx.com/consumer/home-entertainment/mobile-apps/thx-tune-up-app-for-ios/
Otherwise check out Datacolor's Spyder4TV HD - http://spyder.datacolor.com/portfolio-view/spyder4tv-hd/
Or Disney's World of Wonder blu-ray calibration disc: http://www.amazon.com/Disney-WOW-World-Wonder-Blu-ray/dp/B0045ASBLG
Or, as Endymion86 said, google your TV model name and 'calibration.' If it's a popular model, you'll probably find people who've got good stats you can adjust your TV to.
Typically you'll want to turn off any feature that has an "On/Off" switch in the settings, in my experience.
Good luck. Calibrating a TV can really change your viewing experience for the better.
For Gift One I would choose the Ticket to Ride For my Husband. I know how much he has been wanting it. For Gift Two I would pick Spirited Away For my son, who's birthday is coming up and he is a huge Studio Ghibli fan. So, C'mon...gimme You both are wonderful for being so generous, I'm sure you look Smashing! Thanks! :D
I have the Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki selling it for $130 ish. The collection is all bluray :)
The Cat Returns $15
The Secret World of Arrietty $10
When Marnie Was There $15
The Tale of the Princess Kaguya $15
Pom Poko $10
Only Yesterday $15
Grave of the Fireflies $12
From Up on Poppy Hill $15
and my personal favorite, Whisper of the Heart $15
Individually, or if you buy everything, I'd sell them all together for $200 (the box set and every other movie listed). If you have an offer, PM me :)
I'll accept payment through Paypal
It is in mint condition. :) PM me if you're interested!
I would personally (and did) choose the Samsung. They consistently get the best ratings from sites like CNET.
As for properly tuning the tv, I would recommend that you pick up a calibration bluray. Disney makes a very easy to follow one called World of Wonder that will walk you through setting the color, contrast, brightness, etc to get the best picture possible for your environment.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0045ASBLG
Yes the cat sound is different too.
The originals I have on dvd look like this...
I am pretty certain these are what was originally broadcast on adult swim back in the day.
The Blu-ray set I have is an updated reissue of the remix dvds that look like this... or this...
I'm glad I'm not just crazy and am not the only one that this bothers. If you want the old broadcast versions, hunt down the first dvds I linked.
Even though I have the series on blu-ray, I will never get rid of those for this very reason. Also because it was the first anime on dvd I ever purchased (sentimental value, to the max).
edit- All these I listed are American releases.
My choices would have to be Spirited Away. This is the first anime movie that I convinced my girlfriend to watch, and she enjoyed it although she isn't an anime watcher. The second would have to be Titanic because it is the first classic emotional movie that I shared with my girlfriend, and she cried like a baby :p. I love movies because they bring people together to share a common interest or even make new ones.
You can actually buy them on DVD. I'm surprised it's not on Amazon any more, but I bought this from Amazon about 6 months ago for 30 bucks. It's a "two disc special edition" version of each movie, meaning one disc with the remaster and a "bonus disc" with the unaltered original. One of my favorite purchases.
I'd like to suggest:
Blackballed: The Bobby Dukes Story
The Matrix
Blade Runner
Johnny Dangerously
The Philadelphia Story Available for free on Amazon Instant Video for Prime Customers. Katherine Hepburn, Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart, it's a classic comedy and it's pretty funny.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Office Space
Strangers on a Train This film is referenced a lot, worth a watch!
The Princess Bride
Riddick Trilogy
Total Recall
Wag the Dog
Okay that's a few, some you may not have seen even!
The color saturation is adjustable on most any television. If you for some reason prefer the cooler, bluer image on the left you can achieve that with any TV.
The main aspect of 720p and above is resolution. That is what the 720 number means...how many lines of resolution there are. 720 > 480 hence more detail is possible in a given scene.
In addition the letter "p" and "i" mean something too. The "p" = Progressive Scan. Basically your tv will draw every line on the tv on each pass. The "i" = Interlaced. Basically your TV will draw every-other line on the TV on each pass. So lines 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and so on then start at the top again and do lines 2,4,6,8,10 and so on. This makes moving images more fuzzy on the screen since the image on the second pass would be slightly out of line with the first image (sort of a jagged edge).
HDMI is also becoming the exclusive standard in TVs for a variety of reasons but mainly due to its copy protection features that make it difficult to impossible to copy source material (e.g. so you cannot make a perfect copy of a Blu-Ray disk). The new game consoles coming out have no analog output. You can thank Hollywood for that imposition.
In short, HD is superior in every way to standard definition. If you like the cooler colors you can make most any set replicate that. I think you are crazy but you can. The best thing to do with a new TV is to properly calibrate it with something like Spears & Munsil HD Benchmark and Calibration (there are also some calibration tools on some HD movies). Once done I think you would quickly adjust to the superior picture and that color scheme and never go back.
As mentioned by /u/hereisatoptip , Prometheus, Avatar and LOTR are positively stuffed with goodies. The Alien Anthology and Star Wars complete saga box sets are amazing, although navigating the bonus material in both is a bit of a PITA. The Star Trek 'classic films' box set actually included some great bonus features, even though the remasters of the films themselves left a bit to be desired. Also, the Blade Runner five-disc Collector's Edition has pretty much everything a BR fanatic could want, including the original workprint and the tremendous 'Strange Days' documentary.
Steins;Gate! It's my favorite anime and it's one of the best. Currently $30 on amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Steins-Gate-Complete-Classic-Blu-ray/dp/B00KU3Y5CG/
Hmm, it appears to be sold out atm though... Also sold out on rightstuf... And sold out at Best Buy... Wow.
Zambambo!
Thanks for the contest. :)

Why yes, I am a bot. I've been requested to comment in this subreddit.
Please let me know if I made a mistake!
Happiest Baby on The Block.
Seriously could not give it a higher recommendation. Dad of a fussy newborn (5 weeks). It saved my sanity.
Here's a quick YouTube preview: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mm3aJ78TXak
But you HAVE to get the Amazon Instant video if you watch the YouTube and want more details. https://www.amazon.com/Happiest-Baby-Block-Harvey-Karp/dp/B0088Y6C0W
Also. Get a halo sleeper sack. Way easier than swaddling and it holds all night.
Also swear by the fisher price rock and play. Only pediatrician approved device for a baby to sleep in that moves (vs vibrate) and it's only $60.
Combine that with a wubbanub, some gripe water and this YouTube link played LOUDLY close to him/her - you'll find the "off switch" too. :)

Anyways, I choose Steins;Gate complete series simply because it's my top series.
Anime to me this year has meant a lot of disappointment more than anything. I was super hyped for both Charlotte and UBW, and both were a pretty big letdown. On the other hand though I definitely did have some pretty big surprises with a hopeful future, in a lot of announcements including Steins;Gate sequel and Rewrite (although I gotta keep my expectations in check)
EDIT: Oh man how could I forget Aldnoah.Zero season 2 in my slew of disappointment? That was right up there as well.
Based on the movies inside (and the drawing on the exterior), that seems to be the Hayao Miyazaki Directed Works Collection (or, in Japanese, 宮崎駿監督作品集). You could use google translate on the description in the amazon.jp entry for it or the page for the similar North American release to figure out how to describe it, but it looks like it has a disc for every Miyazaki film from Castle of Cagliostro through to The Wind Arises, with two bonus discs.
I don't know where is best to sell it (I'm not from North America, so I really have no good input here).
Cat Sweater - $26.29
Betty White - $26.20
Frozen dvd - $22.96
Llama Flip Shirt - $22.99
Chicken Purse - $22.71
Cat Necklace - $22.99
BONUS: Cat Dress - $22.99
/u/shhannaan - YOU LOVE MOST OF THESE CATEGORIES... maybe? lol play with me?
Seeing this picture makes me wonder if you've seen the movie or read the book "The Happiest Baby on the Block".
When I watched the movie, I was skeptical about the results (of using the methods). I can honestly say that 9 out of 10 times, works like a charm. And if my baby girl won't go to sleep, it's because she needs a bit more of one thing or another (fed, changed, burped) and is easily resolved.
I swear it's a new mom life saver! :)
Most of the Amazon sales I have seen have been pretty good, like the one for Steins;Gate. Specials really depend on the set, sometimes they have OVA's and things like music.
> How's the quality compared to just downloaded
Well you are actually supporting the industry when buying BD vs. illegally downloading so there is that... Not to mention that Bray rips are based of the BD....
I loved the movie so much :) I thought it was absolutely adorable and sing to it all the time. The music is really good ((I love musicals))

I didn't know there was other productsthis from your list cause its one of my very favorites!
I have the same one on my list or you can choose anything that makes you happy! =)
i love kevin
Mischief Managed
Sorry I'm late, but I have this boxset, and I love it. Theres hours and hours of behind the scenes and extra footage, and the movies themselves are amazing. Totally worth the money
somewhere in settings. not all players/tvs have it, generally the better ones do.

On my surround sound, it's in settings, but you can google it. Or, I highly recommend getting a calibration disc, goes a long way. A lot of THX movies like Indiana jones has basic one on the dvd, but this has been worth it's weight in gold for me.

HARD TICKET TO HAWAII is one of the of the greatest 80s exploitation films. The razorblade frisbee is fucking brilliant.
Andy Sidaris made a ton of films in the same vein, like GUNS with Erik Estrada and Danny Trejo and my personal favorite, SEVEN with William Smith.
You should all pick up his boxset on Amazon – 12 classic B-Movies for less than $6! You can't beat that.
I know I sound like a pitchman, but I just love this guys' films.
Good form is insanely important so that you can improve and not hurt yourself. I've been deloading every once and a while on certain lifts when I feel my form hasn't been spot on to improve my technique.
Have you checked out the Starting Strength DVD?
http://www.amazon.com/Starting-Strength-Basic-Barbell-Training/dp/B001U9FDP2
If I win the plupfiction contest, I would love The Princess Bride! (From my movies wishlist)
I have no preference which of those things I want more, so either one would be great :)
Does 360 support youtube? You can watch it all on FUNimation's official youtube channel. They also have the first 4 episodes of the dub on youtube, if you prefer that.
That said, it's not HD, and the recommended subs are not the official ones. WhyNotSubs are usually what this sub recommends, which you'd have to find a way to acquire yourself (I do not believe this sub can publicly condone piracy). That said, if you do download it, I'd recommend purchasing the anime as well. $30 on amazon for 12 hours of anime is not a bad deal by any means, especially for a top anime like Steins;Gate.
You could just buy the dvds, and play those from your xbox, if you'd prefer that.
My wife breast feeds and I occasionally bottle feed. I've noticed that depending on the bottle nipple, milk from a bottle flows very fast into my daughter's mouth. After she drinks it all and there's no more left sometimes she's still fussy. But after a few minutes she slips into milk comma. Compare that to the breast... it's more of a slow and steady flow that she has to work for by sucking. She almost always falls asleep on the boob. I recently bought some better bottle nipples that restrict the flow and she has to work a little harder to suck on them. Maybe that would help.
Also, I hope you've heard of the 5 Ss. I highly recommend this video:
http://www.amazon.com/Happiest-Baby-Block-Harvey-Karp/dp/B0088Y6C0W/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1398174413&sr=1-1&keywords=happiest+baby+on+the+block
And yeah, it gets better. This week my 3 month old started sleeping from 9 or 10pm to 6 or 7am.
Good luck!
Right now you can find that set new or used on Amazon for an exorbitant amount of money, with your link sold out these are hard to find. You can also find a Phase 2 set on Amazon for a decent amount. But to your question, I can see a Phase 3 set or a Marvel First 10 years set but I can see that First 10 year set running a grand easily. I can see a Phase 3 set running around $250 and the overall set running $500-$600 depending on the extras. I expect the case, like Phase One being the Tesseract briefcase and Phase Two being the Orb, being the Infinity Gauntlet. Just my thoughts anyway. I'm sure if Disney thinks they can make money on it they'll put it out. Though we probably won't hear anything about that till closer to the release of Avengers 4.
Hey everyone! If you love the show please check out /r/cowboybebop and join us in the conversation. We're constantly discovering new things about this amazing anime.
And if you're not aware, a blu ray version of the show was recently released. The perfect Christmas present for the Cowboy Bebop fan in your life.
Glad I was able to convince you! it really is worth it. i mean the results speak for themselves!
Just one thing though, make sure that this is the box set you get:
https://www.amazon.com/Alien-Anthology-Aliens-Resurrection-Blu-ray/dp/B001AQO3QA/ref=tmm_mfc_title_1?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1469153835&sr=8-1
And not this one:
https://www.amazon.com/Alien-Quadrilogy-Blu-ray-Tom-Skerritt/dp/B00MBNZ1Y4/ref=tmm_mfc_title_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1469153835&sr=8-1
The 2014 blu-ray quadrilogy set (not sure why they brought that name back) from what i understand, is just the 4 movies and does not include the two bonus feature disks. so unless you dont want the extras, make sure you get the 2010 antholgy set not the 2014 quadrilogy set. (the disks themselves are the same though, so there is no difference in quality between the movies themselves in these sets)
So, I worked as an HDTV engineer for five years and can tell you about my experiences.
In order to achieve market differentiation and tv selling features, TVs (at least the ones from my company…) will ship with a bunch of image processing effects that, frankly, are gimmicks. Without "game mode" on input lag will be increased as the TV applies effects before displaying the image. (It should be noted that no HD signals--including those produced by games--are engineered anticipating to be processed a second time by another device. They expect just being displayed on a well-calibrated display without any other processing.)
My two cents: if you're concerned about image quality, start with a really good calibration disc (like http://www.amazon.com/Disney-WOW-World-Wonder-Blu-ray/dp/B0045ASBLG/) with game mode set to on. At the conclusion, the image displayed will be the closest match your tv can produce to what the content creator intended AND with the smallest amount of input lag. If you don't like it, turn game mode off and play knowing you've made an informed decision and explored your options fully. :)
Edit: game mode doesn't affect 60fps--you're still going to get 60 (or more, if you have a tv that adds frames to simulate faster refresh…) frames either way, but with it on, the time that the PS4 produces the image to the time it shows up on your screen very well may be increased. And I game with game mode on. In answer to your questions, which I forgot in my original reply. :)
Rats, if you're convinced you'll love it, the Blu Ray/DVD set is pretty cheap. I own it myself and it's definitely worth 30 USD to me.
>basic excercise will help
Screw basic exercise. You'll find thousands of people who wish they could go back into their teens and start lifting.
You're going to be a hormone factory for the next 6 to 8 years. Watch some Rippetoe videos and begin "Starting Strength".
Sign up for a "Strength Training" course in your high-school and let your building muscles do the fat-loss work for you. Skip cardio when it's not forced on you.
Good luck. See you in a few years when you're showing off.
I had this one on an Amazon list for Christmas a few years ago. I like it, watched all the movies and didn't notice anything missing. I'm pretty sure there was bonus content on the discs too, bonus scenes or outtakes.
I know it seems like it should cost more for 8 discs, but the cost of blu ray is coming down as digital becomes more popular.
A little off topic, but get one of these. It will help you calibrate your new TV and get the most out of the picture. I did it with my TV and the difference is huge. This is one of the best calibration discs available that you can get without a professional doing the calibration.
Go buy this and run the pixel flipper. It should remove them for you.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0045ASBLG?pc_redir=1414609665&robot_redir=1
Edit- not sure what plasma you have, but IMO plasmas are still the way to go if you want the best picture quality. Just need to be sure to watch something different every few days, or run this program. I had a local sports logo in mine from watching too much baseball, and this removed it for me.
Also, make sure your plasma is not running in torch mode (brightness and contrast way high).
Amazon has the Marvel Phase 1 Set and Phase 2 Set
Ive got both of these.
The Phase 1 set is getting more and more difficult to come by hence the price. Both of them are pretty sweet though. They both come with replicas of S.H.I.E.L.D dossiers and trinkets from the movies like Scott Langs Basket Robbins name tag, an Avengers Patch, Steve Rogers medical files before and after he took the Super Soldier Serum.
Im sure a Phase 3 set is in the works eventually.
I got a great deal on Amazon. I love them, although the physical DVD boxset looks better than the normal plastic case the BluRays come in.
https://www.amazon.com/Lord-Rings-Fellowship-Extended-Editions/dp/B0026L7H20
I think the heart of the matter is, in the words of Gabe Newell (Blessed be His name);
"We think there is a fundamental misconception about piracy. Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem," he said. "If a pirate offers a product anywhere in the world, 24 x 7, purchasable from the convenience of your personal computer, and the legal provider says the product is region-locked, will come to your country 3 months after the US release, and can only be purchased at a brick and mortar store, then the pirate's service is more valuable."
I used to pirate video games all the time, but since I stated using Steam I've almost completely stopped it. I already have more games in my library than I could possibly finish playing for the foreseeable future, and it's provided by an affordable and reliable service. There's just no reason for me to look elsewhere.
The Anime industry needs to emulate this. Today I can legally download a huge selection of video games but for most anime shows legal streams are simply not available. There needs to be a reliable service which doesn't block out big parts of the world. Not to justify my piracy but I do think producers share some of the blame for why piracy is as widespread as it is. Why is it completely impossible for me to legally watch their show even if I'm willing to pay for it?
It's also the fact that often buying these shows is outrageously expensive. I mean, just compare:
The first 7 Episodes of Sword Art online on DVD cost about as much as the full second season of Game of Thrones on Blu-ray
The limited edition Blu-ray release of the 11 episode run of Nisemonogatari costs about the same as Pre-ordering the entire 62 episode run of Breaking bad on blu-ray
The first season of Haruhi Suzumiya on DVD costs more than All 8 Harry Potter movies on Blu-ray
It may look like I'm cherrypicking but I'm really not. When you buy anime the amount of content you get for your money is far less than if you spend that same amount of money on western shows. This is one of the reasons I own relatively few anime series. I can only accept these kinds of prices if I absolutely must own the show. I do hope you take the price factor into consideration, I feel it's often overlooked and I do think it's one of the things that keeps sales so low. I mean, Haruhi came out 7 years ago. Western shows that old can usually be found for peanuts. One Anime I genuinely wanted to buy was Shinsekai Yori but the series was split in 9 Volumes each costing about 50-80$. Even as a huge fan of the series I just don't have that kind of money.
They released the original, unaltered trilogy on DVD. Did it kind of under the radar, but there you go.
Each of the 3 original theatrical movies are included as bonus discs, the only bummer is that they're letterboxed instead of being presented in anamorphic widescreen. Ah well, better than nothin', eh?
I own the disk. Probably the best way. Removed all my destiny burn in after 48 hours straight. Unstuck a pixel on a monitor.
Things a godsend.
You could surely download it.

Nice! Seems like it hit all of your requirements for a good price. If you're looking for some specific picture calibrations, you could always pickup something like this. It's a blu-ray (or DVD) that helps you fine-tune those settings
$4.99 movie, but it's The Princess Bride. I haven't seen this since I was younger, and I loved it then.
Wow what a movie
Mischief Managed.
Bonus: Cape - a tiny secret superhero lair for my birds
This movie because she's finding herself and is learning how to find herself to be a beautiful young woman.
I love dis shirt a lot a lot. It would be nice to wear in the fall. :3
To clarify the question:
There are DVD releases that I have seen come out such as the Ultimate Matrix Collection and Lord of the Rings Extended Editions, that packed so many special features into the DVD set it made it fun to own DVDs again.
There are restorations that have come out such as the Wizard of Oz special edition that made the picture and sound so vibrant and clear that you could see the actual burlap pattern in the scarecrow's face. They digitally painted out any scratches or lines, literally one cel at a time.
There are DVD re-releases such as the entire Studio Ghibli collection (Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Ponyo, etc.) with amazing distribution and backing from Disney/Pixar and more specifically, John Lasseter that made the movies so accessible and "mainstream" with new English dubs from well known American actors that it literally introduced anime to a whole new generation of viewers.
I don't know anything about Criterion, but I would imagine they fit into this picture somewhere.
There are no officially released complete sets of the Studio Ghibli films. There are some sets though that you can get, which are official:
Japanese Takahata films
Japanese Miyazaki films
North American Miyazaki films Canada
North American Miyazaki films US
I find the best place to purchase the movies is though Amazon though. They have them all, and since Amazon almost always lowers their prices to match competitors, it tends to be the best price. At the moment, Amazon Canada is matching Walmart, so all the Ghibli films are $19.96.
Wow what a coincidence I just downloaded the book on kindle! I heard it mentioned here a few days ago and realized I'd never read it or seen the movie. I am loving it so far, hopefully I finish it tonight. I'd love the movie so my daughter and I can watch it together. I'm trying to get her to branch out from cartoons only and I think she'll dig it.

Edit- messed up link
I would say that depends on what you have access to, and how much you're going to jump into it. I will say from the beginning that there is no consensus on any of this, so don't take any reply as the gospel.
The most obvious answer is to start at the beginning - Gojira, the 1954 Japanese original. Many folks say it's the best ever made.
Another option would be to start at the other end, the best "modern" movies before the new one. I would recommend either Godzilla against Mechagodzilla from 2002, or its sequel, Godzilla: Tokyo SOS from 2003.
If you're ready to really "commit" to watching several movies, for the very low price of $21 you can get this boxed set from Amazon that has seven movies, including the first one (Japanese and American versions) and you'll get the classic monsters that will be popping up in the G14 sequels: Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan.
My personal favorite Godzilla movie is Return of Godzilla from 1984 (sometimes called Godzilla 1985 because it was released in the US in 1985). The problem is that it's very hard to find, and you shouldn't wait to jump into the movies until you can find this one.
And by watching the original, you mean (for the new consumer):
Purchase the DVD versions with the bonus discs, as the bonus discs are the closest to the original movie prints that exist on commercial DVD.
* Edit: These versions:

http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Episode-VI-Widescreen/dp/B000FQVX78/
To put it simply, yes. The blu-ray trilogy extended version is only $50 bucks from amazon.com.
edit: here's the link. I own it myself, great investment. It also has the most bonus features/footage out of any of the releases.
Thank you for taking the time to answer my question.
Regarding the bias lighting, do you have any personal experience with it? You sound like someone with quite some knowledge in the area, so would you recommend it yourself or no?
And thanks for all the in-depth answers, I will probably keep it simple and get a smart 1080, maybe 3D TV and let the technology develop for some years more before I head into OLED/4k so the prices drop aswell.
On the calibration, would you say it is worth purchasing this?
http://www.amazon.com/Disney-WOW-World-Wonder-Blu-ray/dp/B0045ASBLG
As you mentioned yourself it could be the way to go, and several reviews on Amazon says the same.
I'm not suggesting you "recalibrate" for a single episode. I'm suggesting you actually calibrate it right, and everything will look better. (or at least, the way it's supposed to)
I'm guessing you haven't watched a whole lot of very dark content on that TV yet. It looked incredible to me. I thought the cinematography and color grading was excellent in this episode. But of course, I'm very anal about calibrating my displays.
This is what I use to calibrate my displays, but even something like this should help a lot.
Here is the link, if you want to buy it. I have the collection and it's pretty awesome. Expensive, but awesome.
OH MY GOD LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT FROZEN OKAY FROZEN IS THE BEST DISNEY MOVIE IN TWENTY YEARS AND YOU NEED TO SEE IT NOOOOOOW

Awesome contest! Thanks :)

That is definitely a bootleg. The cover looks cheap, and it is extremely rare for official releases to include everything in one item (Official releases of the TV series and Movie are separate items).
I'm going to assume you don't speak Japanese and are looking for a release with english subtitles, so:
I don't know what country you live in, which is important because of region codes.
If you are in North America you are fine with this one by Funimation, and there is a European release by Manga Entertainment but elsewhere you might be out of luck.
Also if you are just looking for Steins;Gate merchandise in general, like figures or music or something, these are legit sites.
It depends how much you care about accuracy, but Sony TVs tend to be fairly accurate out of the box with only a few basic settings changes (you can find them on our review). For these varying room conditions you can adjust the 'Brightness' on the X900E.
There are a few ways to adjust the image yourself, but these won't be as accurate as a calibration with 'real' measurements. A popular example is the Spears and Munsil calibration disk. There are other free test patterns you can use a PC or Blu-ray player to send though.
No idea, but i have the movie Phase 1 box set, and the random items in it are actually pretty impressive. Drawings on actual napkins, newspaper clippings on actual newsprint, a Donald Blake hospital bracelet...
The amazon page has a halfassed unboxing video.
https://smile.amazon.com/Marvel-Cinematic-Universe-Assembled-Incredible/dp/B0083SBMGW/
that is the one that i have even though i'm pretty sure the blu-ray-box contains the same bonus material.. i might buy this one as well soon
My DVD sets that I bought around the time episode 3 came out have the original theatrical version included. (I watched them all when I was getting excited for episode VII) the quality was pretty bad but it was definitely the original cut.
Edit: found them on Amazon if anyone is curious. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000FQJAIW/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1482287254&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=star+wars+dvd&dpPl=1&dpID=51u3YmzYxNL&ref=plSrch
Rtings.com and Consumer Reports post their calibration settings for the TVs they review.
They tell you it varies based on production runs and your TV will be different, but it can give you a sense of what their calibration found.
Then there are kits on DVD or Blu-Ray that have color gels included that you can use to calibrate. I had one on DVD a while back and thought it did a good job for color, but not so much for backlight.
Spears & Munsil HD Benchmark and Calibration Disc 2nd Edition https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CKWI13O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_JAjrDbRGJBDT5
But you get what you pay for. A trained calibrator with the right equipment will be best and cost the most.
Yes, 100x yes. You can find it on Amazon right now for only $50.

im telling you totally worth it. I have 3 kids and Happiest Baby on the Block was hugely helpful. Probably the only advice I got from any other parent that was really worth it. It is also available in book form and you can probably pirate it
1 and 2a) We BOTH desserve this! Why? Because it is the greatest Studio Ghilbi film ever!
1 and 2b) And our kitties BOTH deserve this! Why? Because you can never have enough scratchy stuff in your home!
3) Here are my baby kitties to make you smile.
Howl's Moving Castle simply because it's a fantastic movie, and because it was the first movie my boyfriend and I watched together :)

Does she have a Blu-Ray player? If so, the generic extended edition trilogy on Amazon is perfect as-is, and isn't ridiculously expensive.

The Collected Works of Hideo Miyazaki - although you can probably buy all these movies individually for cheaper.
Stanley Kubrick: The Master Collection - doesn't include some of his earlier films, unfortunately.
Universal 100th Anniversary Collection - just a lot of great films from a wide range of genres for the money.
Back to the Future 30th Anniversary Trilogy - self explanatory
Indiana Jones: Complete Adventures Collection - comes with a free Indiana Jones 4 coaster!
It’s not 4K rated, but this disc may help. I’ve used it on four HDTVs in the house and it is an excellent starting point.
But again, I’m only running 1080p right now.
it's dubbed, and dubbed really well (though you can watch it in the original japanese w/english subtitles). the first 3 or 4 episodes are kinda slow, but it really picks up after that. like i said, i don't find (most) anime appealing, but cowboy bebop is one of my favorite things ever.
you can pick up the complete series on blu-ray for 30$.
Honestly I think they are cheaper on Amazon than they have been in a while. When I first started thinking about upgrading my old dvds to blurays, I couldn't find a set below $80. I bought them recently on Amazon UK for about $45. They are region-free, so they should work in any bluray player and shipping to the US was only a couple extra bucks. Took a couple weeks to get to me though. Good luck on your search!
Me time.
My SO and I would first, go to the dog park together. Protect the car seats and make sure to bring the tennis ball launcher to tire out both pups. Also, here are the tennis balls.
Light this delicious, romantic Woodwick candle. Mood lighting/smells.
Make some homemade pizzas. From scratch, using ingredients out of these canisters and you have to make the pizza together. Sharing rolling and flouring duties. Possibly throw flower. Music should be playing in background, like this Momford & Sons album. Perhaps we'd even bake cookies together.
While pizza is baking, bust out Scrabble or Twister, whichever fits your style. Include drinks.
After getting significantly tipsy, watch movies together, Possibly a few Harry Potter movies.
Read books together. I'd read this new one by J.K. Rowling. Go to bed really late after doing some "adult things" together. Sleep on these warm sheets.
Thanks for the contest. I'm actually single, but this is a future, a-girl-can-dram plan for myself. ;)

I know I was out of order up there but I don't want to change it. <3
Deadlifts:
1] You look really loose at the start of each rep. The one thing I can think of that might help your back position is at the start of each rep to really squeeze through your chest. Rippetoe gives a fairly good explanation of this:
If you enjoy that video and haven't already, grab a copy of Rippetoe's DVD which this is stolen from. It's fantastic and has a couple really hot girls in it. Which is a metric for the quality of every product from a man's point of view:
Squats:
1] On those reps (especially the third) it looked like you were leaning too far forward, which was causing you to not balance correctly. Also, your knees buckled in a bit as a result (or maybe that caused it). I'm not sure what the proper solution is but if I were in your shoes I'd try getting my butt out more, really focusing on maintaining a natural arch in my back and spreading my knees out as I squat.
That being said, the camera angle might skew the accuracy of my assessment.
2] Definitely not deep enough. I have a mate who squats exactly like you. He complains that deep squats hurt his knees yet every time he focuses on spreading his knees out rather than moving them forward and back he gets to parallel without hassles. Plus I don't call him names.
3] On your final 2 reps, you'll notice your butt starts to rise before your chest/shoulders. This is bad as it causes some pretty unworkable angles in your back that can really fuck you out of a heavy set. I can't really give any sound advice on fixing this but being aware of it will hopefully help you fix it.
So I'm kind of lost. I own Episodes IV, V, and VI on DVD, and all three came with a second bonus disc that have the original theatrical versions on them. I don't know whether or not they're remastered, but I wouldn't complain about the quality, they're just as good looking as I'd expect from any DVD. Everyone seems to go on about how they can't be purchased except on laserdisc or VHS, but that simply isn't true. I got these at Target maybe three years ago, and they're completely legit. Turned in my old special edition trilogy to a used store and bought all three again to have both versions. Are they somehow different than the originals?
Link to the version I have
If you want to spend a little bit for some really good patterns, here is a link to the disc that I use -- http://www.amazon.com/Spears-Munsil-Benchmark-Calibration-Disc/dp/B00CKWI13O?ie=UTF8&keywords=calibration%20disc&qid=1464066144&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1
Using this disc and eyeballing it is the best that you can do without the pro tools. This is actually the disc that every website uses when they do a full/pro calibration. The only difference is that you won't be able to do some portions (like white balance) without the pro tools, but it's still very good for eyeballing.
https://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Episode-IV-Limited/dp/B000FQJAIW
2006, they have a problem though, lots of digital noise and artifacting in them. Harmy's Despecialized Editions are the best way to watch the original trilogy, with the laserdisc being the 2nd best.
This set, which you can find in many retailers pretty easily, has the "original theatrical cut" on the second "Bonus Features" disc. It's just the Laserdisc version droped on a DVD, but it looks better than any VHS.
I know this isn't an actually comic book or trade collection but the Avengers Phase one blu-ray collection would be sweet gift. Includes all the movies leading up to and including the Avengers. Link to it on Amazon
My son refused to sleep on his back, even when swaddled. For the first 3 months of his life he slept in a mamaroo with permission from his pedi. But the best advice I was given as when I watched Happiest Baby on the Block (Link) for the first 3 month after birth you need to have the mindset that you're in the "fourth trimester" and they're not okay with the big bright world yet and that's okay.
They released a dvd set of the OG trilogy that has 6 disks, 3 are the "enhanced" ones and 3 are what I'm pretty sure are the original ones. So unless I'm mistaken, there are copies left that aren't VHS or whatnot.
Here's a link to that specific version (which costs a ton now) where the top review mentions that it does contain the original versions:
https://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Trilogy-Widescreen-Theatrical/dp/B001EN71DG
*Edit: What's sketchy is that the amazon listing merges several box sets together, and only the blue one with Luke & Vader clashing is the one that contains the OG versions.
/u/CelticMara just woke up.
/u/TheRubyRedPirate is curious about boob science.
Frozen, but if you would rather pick, surprises are fun, too!
I love movies because... they take me out of my life for a few hours and I get to experience something new :D
Have you calibrated your TV? Rarely are the out of box settings very good. Just google HDTV calibration and there should be some online sources and/or blu rays. I use this for all my TVs and it works like a charm.
You can get the Laserdisc editions on DVD from Amazon. The DVDs have the 2004 remastered version, plus a "bonus" disc advertised as the original theatrical release. They're really just the Laserdisc versions put onto DVD.
It looks like not all of them are for sale directly from Amazon any more, but you should be able to find them elsewhere (including the Amazon Marketplace) if you're interested in them.

/u/justabaldguy get in this contest because you are pretty much the first person I think of when it says to summon someone!
Thanks for the contest!
you might want to add this movie to your wishlist because it is adorable and awesome.
Most definitely a bootleg set. I fell for it once and bought it, they were pretty bad. Watchable but bad...
Here is a legit set: https://www.amazon.com/Collected-Miyazaki-Amazon-Exclusive-Blu-ray/dp/B0117V8BX8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1486588088&sr=8-1&keywords=miyazaki+collection
It's a little pricey but totally worth it. I personally bought them one by one as they came on sale, but if you want a collectors set that one works. Do note that it's only Miyazaki movies. Wish they had one for the whole studio...
To expand on this a bit, the 2006 dvds are what you would want if you can find them. They look like this, though as you may notice they are now out of print. Its the closest that you'll find to the originals from an official release. I would definitely not recommend the blu rays, they have visual issues and the changes really affect anyone's ability to take it seriously. ("NOOOOoo!", etc.)
Do yourself a favor and pick up the Disney WoW disc and spend an evening doing a proper calibration on that set and avoid that THX preset. Or read up on the AVS forums in the GT50 owner thread and copy other users professionally calibrated settings. It'll make a world of difference and give you more accurate color reproduction than the built in presets.
This is getting out of hand considering this was just released 2 years ago. I think at this point, 10 years after the final movie in the trilogy was released, they shouldn't give a slap in the face to the true fans that try to support the franchise by buying everything only to have another $100 version come out 2 years later.
> They continue to believe that presentation is vital and particularly appreciate opportunities for audiences to experience the films together in a theatrical setting.
So what's this? a screener?
https://www.amazon.com/My-Neighbor-Totoro-Mark-Henley/dp/B002ZTQV8Y
First of all, don't pirate anything. There are only a couple that you could really justify pirating, but there's no reason to start with those. If you're truly interested and want to support Godzilla, pay for the movies.
A good starting point is the DVD The Godzilla Collection. It contains the following movies:
In addition to the Japanese versions, all the U.S. edited cuts are included as well. However, I believe the original Godzilla is cropped to be widescreen, so if you want the original aspect ration, I suggest the Criterion release available on Blu-ray or DVD.
A good place to start for some of the more recent movies is The Toho Godzilla Collection, Volumes 1 & 2. This set contains the following:
Full disclosure, I think this collection is only on DVD, but all of these movies are also available on Blu-ray in various singe- and multi-disc packs. But if you don't care about Blu-ray, this is a great set.
This doesn't cover every Godzilla movie, but those two box sets are both pretty good ways to start, I think. If you have questions about specific movies or anything else let me know.
http://www.amazon.com/Girls-Guns-G-Strings-Sidaris-Collection/dp/B004HHX9OQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1374620788&sr=8-1&keywords=girls+guns+and+g+strings
Here you go, 12 of his movies for $4.50. it's a pretty great deal.
"It's literally impossible to see the theatrical cuts on video because they've never been released" is the biggest lie that I hear every day on the internet that I'm most sick of hearing. The theatrical editions of all three films were released on disc 2 of the "Limited Edition" DVDs in 2006.
Yes, it sucks that they're long discontinued and copies are super expensive. Yes, it sucks that they haven't been restored and remastered. Yes, it sucks that Lucasfilm only thinks of the original films as "special features." But if you're willing to spend some money or do some legwork (I've found them readily available at public libraries, and maybe people have had luck at yard sales and used record shops), you can watch the original theatrical trilogy at home, yub nubs and all.
For anyone who wants a calibrated SDR without paying for a professional calibration, I highly recommend Spears & Munsil.
Proper contrast, proper brightness, proper color with included blue filter, and it also has a nice AV sync calibration tool for audio delays.

Honestly people should look into properly calibrating/optimize their TVs/players.
http://www.amazon.com/Disney-WOW-World-Wonder-Blu-ray/dp/B0045ASBLG
Use something like that, then make sure you're viewing in a dark room.
The episodes are not even remotely dark on our TV.
I'm using the VUDU service with a properly set PS3 and 1080p plasma display. It also looks fine on my PC gaming rig.
calibration settings aren't an objective thing, they vary based on your model and environmental conditions. using simple calibration patterns and tuning even just brightness/contrast and saturation will yield better, more accurate results than copying values.
personally i recommend grabbing this disc: http://www.amazon.com/Disney-WOW-World-Wonder-Blu-ray/dp/B0045ASBLG/
Any reasoning to this selection, because honestly I think we could recommend something better than these, if there isn't a specific reason to this selection.
Summer Wars
Garden of Words
Steins;Gate
Obsucre-er? (Though maybe not as great)
Patema Inverted
Children Who Chase Lost Voices
Ergo Proxy
In general, RightStuf has some nice deals, or you could try Amazon.
More specifically, here's Bebop for $30. Can't find Blu-Rays of Gankutsuou, but here's a DVD set. Summer Wars is here. Try this for Black Lagoon, but there's also a collector's edition here. Evangelion 2.22 here. Haruhi here, but as a pre-order and at an absurd price.
I can only find Madoka, Perfect Blue, Baccano, Code Geass, and Fate/Zero at prices you probably don't want to pay.
I have never seen it.
It would be awesome to watch something other than Disney movies my daughter picks out

Thanks for the contest.
I picked up the LOTR Extended Editions Blu Ray for $57 from Amazon. 15 discs with 26 hours of special features should occupy me pretty well over the winter break.
There really is no "extended edition" (correction: there are some fan edits of the movies that reintegrate deleted scenes back into the films, but there is no official extended edition) of the films, but there are several options. If you want the most up-to-date, high quality version then any of the Blu-Ray box sets will do. The slight catch is that the versions on the Blu-Rays arent exactly the versions that were shown in theaters in the 70's and 80's. The story is exactly the same and (in my opinion) the changes weren't significant enough to impact my enjoyment of the films, but some fans are purists and nothing but the theatrical versions will do. If your uncle is one of these people then you are going to want to look for the limited edition DVDs that have the theatrical cuts included as a bonus disc.
Ep. 1-3 are essentially the same as they appeared in theaters, so any old copy you want to pick up will do.
