I am leasing mine. I drove a '97 Nissan pickup truck for 15 years. I don't drive more that 7K miles a year so I looked for the least expensive car to lease. It became a toss up between the Scion iQ - $99/month $1,919 due at signing and the Smart Car Pure Coupe – $107/month, $2,393 due at signing. I decided on the Smart Fortwo Pure Coupe. I decided on the Smart because:
1. It's made by Mercedes-Benz
2. Gets slightly better gas mileage than the Scion iQ.
3. Has a Mercedes-Benz Mitsubishi Engine

They advertise the Smart gets 36/38 city/hwy but I follow the Tips on Fuelly, feed it 91 octane as the manual recommends and am averaging 39.9 city, I don't drive hwy, don't have to. I got the base model and it came with a radio and A/C.

Being a bit envious of my friends that drive cars with all the latest technological gadgets I purchased a GOgroove FlexSMART X2 Wireless In-Car Bluetooth FM Transmitter with Charging , Music Control , and Hands-Free Calling for Smartphones which allows me to listen to Pandora, receive and make phone calls hands free and listen to the navigator on my Android phone all through the radio speakers. The GOgroove FlexSMART has a built in microphone and extra USB port to charge my Android phone while driving and simply plugs into the cigarette lighter. Also installed CarHome Ultra. And Power Widget Lite. So... when I'm ready to go, I turn on the GPS & Bluetooth using Power Widget Lite, start the GOgroove, start CarHome Ultra. Turn on the ignition, CarHome Ultra automatically pairs and connects to the GOGroove, plug the phone into GOgroove's Universal USB port, tap the Pandora button on CarHome Ultra and I am good to go. Sounds like a lot of work, but takes less than 30 seconds. I also have Ultimate Car Dock installed with a shortcut on CarHome Ultra so if I want to text and receive text I simply tap the Ultimate Car Dock shortcut on CarHome Ultra ( You can add shortcuts to apps on CarHome Ultra ) and can send & receive text messages via voice command.

Again, it takes a few seconds to set up before starting to drive but for a total of about $60 for the FM Transmitter and the apps I have all the "techie" bells and whistles (Or almost all of them ) of a $25 - $30K car.

I actually read the manual and also have it in PDF on my PC so I can search through it using key words.

The thing I especially like about Fuelly is you can text Miles or Odometer reading, Price of gas and how many Gallons ( M P G ) when you get car in the car after fueling and it returns your stats via text and updates your Fuelly page. For example, last time I filled up I texted

and immediately got a text back stating

Actual running cost so far after 7 weeks has been an average of $0.091 per mile for gas and my average MPG is 39.9 MPG city. Sure, I'm feeding it 91 octane which is on average about $0.15 to $0.20 more a gallon than regular but the great Avg MPG makes it worth it. Not to mention the fact that it is a lease and the manual recommends using 91 octane or above for maximum fuel efficiency.

My Brother has a VW Diesel and gets 40 MPG and we all know diesel is $0.20 to $0.30 more than premium.

Do I like my Smart Fortwo Coupe after driving a beat up '97 Nissan pickup for 15+ years? Damn right I do. Do I consider it an extension of my personality or drive it for the attention it gets? NFW.

And the comments I get are mixed, I either get " It looks like a death trap and I wouldn't be caught driving a silly little car like that" ( It has 8 air bags and a Tridium frame and was rated as "Good" on Car & Driver as far as safety goes.) or "What a nice little car, is it fun to drive?".

Do I give a flying fart what people think about the fact I am driving one? Not in the least.
IMHO it's an inexpensive and economical way to get around town. And when my lease is up, I fully intend to lease another one. ;-)

oh! there's also a pleson tempered glass screen protector on amazon for the 5x. it came in last week but i still haven't had a chance to install it. cheap and very highly reviewed.

Some of the things I've gotten that have made my life a little easier.

• 12v 2-way splitter for the truck
  
• Small Moleskine notebook (I write down addresses, run numbers, pertinent info because we do not have an MDT in our trucks)
  
• Slim Wallet (I don't carry a purse to work and I will transfer my debit card, ID, and keep all my licenses in the wallet I linked, great for keeping in a pocket while at work. As a bonus, the company who makes the one I linked is from the city I live in.)
  
• Window Punch These are pretty nice, not many places non-fire around here provide them on the trucks and they come in very handy if you need access and have beaten fire to the scene. I prefer these over the pen style.
  
• Key Holder Good if she has a lot of different keys, some places still use keys to access their narcs, different parts of the building, etc.
  
• Bluetooth Transmitter/Charger I have a new iPhone that does not have an aux port, these work great on our ambulances and have two fast charge ports to charge whatever you need. I use the splitter above to plug this and my GPS/Dashcam in.
  
• Snack Subscription These are pretty cool a bit pricey in the long run though. Get pretty good/healthy snacks monthly with various price plans. Cuts back on the urge to grab that candy at the gas station if you have something better in your bag already.
  
• Rite in the Rain Notebook Just ordered these and they haven't come in yet, they are awesome for onscene quick notes. Since we've moved to EPCR software I find that on really sick patients that we need to move and work on I still manage to keep physical notes which get shredded after the run is finished and it's transcribed to the computer. We use a normal flip book but these help organize things a little bit more, plus they're waterproof. Supposedly works best with their pens or just a normal pencil. Was a neat product I thought I'd try out and go from there. Also don't have to get the EMS version, plenty of other versions/styles to choose from.
  
  
  I'm sure there are more and I'll come back and add them as I can think of them, these are some of the non-medical quality of life items I add to my every day to make things more bearable.

I'm in a similar situation with my car - no aux jack - and plan to keep this car till it turns to dust around me. So I've become quite familiar with a few FM transmitters. But firstly, it's worth mentioning that all FM Transmitters are garbage compared to direct input audio, at least in my experience.

It's bluetooth so you don't have to deal with any cables that will undoubtedly twist and loosen and break. It's also a lot cheaper than the FM Transmitters you'd find stores like Best Buy (I've seen them for upwards of $50(!) in that place).

Some other advice... If you stick to mainly listening to music/radio/whatever through your phone and rarely use the actual radio, you will get a better, clearer signal for your FM Transmitter if you remove your car's antenna. A few years back my car's antenna got ripped off during a snow storm and it was the best happy accident I could have imagined. Because of that it's very easy to find a clear radio station to play the FM Transmitter through.

I own both styles in different cars. I use them to listen to Audiobooks rather than music, so keep that in mind when I talk about sound quality. Bluetooth adapters are great because you can pause and skip from the adapter, and keep your phone in your pocket. I don't like the idea of my phone just sitting loose in the car. In the event of an accident, after which, you'll really need that phone, I don't want it to have gone flying somewhere.

In my car that has an aux port, I have an MPOW Streambot. It's very compact and has pretty good sound quality... no static or muddiness. Battery life is 7-8 hours before you have to recharge it through its micro-usb port. Build quality is a little suspect, but hey, it cost $15 and it hasn't broken yet. I can't complain too much.

In my car that doesn't have an aux port, I have a Nulaxy FM Transmitter. As FM transmitters go, it is pretty great. There is only one frequency here in Dallas I can tune to and not get static, but that's all I need. You can use Radio Locator to find empty frequencies in your area. I feel like the sound quality is just a touch muddy sometimes, but it is far better than any other FM transmitter I've used.

A bluetooth head unit is the ideal solution, but at much higher cost and complexity.

Probably not the answer you were looking for, but RF is probably the easiest and most cost effective way.

This is the unit I purchased. It works well enough, the most important thing is to find a good clean frequency for it to operate. If you plug it into the center console port, it will auto-off/on with the car, as well. I have a desire to figure out how to intercept the input into the head unit from the 6-disc changer and split it over, but I know the Bose is much more difficult due to the optical platform and would require changing out almost or all of the audio system.

Late post, I know, but I've been doing some research on the best FM transmitters (had the Soundfly by Satechi, 3 actually, first one was great and the second two had quality issues. Have had at least 4 or 5 other ones before it back in 08, but since I found that haven't looked back).

Tbh I got a £9.99 one off amazon that covers the entire fm spectrum and use it throughout Central london regularly on 89.5. Never have to change frequency and it sounds as good as listening to a powerful radio station. I'm pretty happy with it! Years ago I had one I paid like £35 and it was abysmal at best even in rural areas. Had this for a few years and it works perfectly. It's worth if you really want to play your favorite songs in the car for sure. It also has the added bonus of hands free calls, but it's mediocre at best it works but it could be better.

I'm still happily using this MPow one well over a year on, most of which time I've been moving it back and forth from one car to another. Sadly, it's no longer available.

When I decided to get a second one to eliminate the swapping, I got this Nulaxy one which has also been great so far,... but I've only had it for a month or so.

The MPow one is built solidly - I can't imagine it breaking, so I'd expect their newer model to be solid as well. Interestingly, though, it seems that a number of different brand names of these devices are literally the same hardware, with brand-specific firmware as the only distinguishing difference. So generalizing about hardware/manufacturing may be invalid. E.g., here's another that looks to be the same hardware as the discontinued MPow, but still available. Scrolling through the available models, I see at least 4 other brands that look identical to the MPow and numerous ones that look identical to the Nulaxy.

Exactly how have the ones you've had failed?

[Edit - caveat: I've been perfectly happy with both devices for playing music (flac player on Samsung Note 3 > Bluetooth to fm), but never have gotten the MPow to perform as a speakerphone worth a crap. Its mic just doesn't pick up my loud voice in a moving car competing against road noise, though it's possible I just haven't been able to adjust its input volume properly. I haven't had a chance to try the Nulaxy one yet as a speakerphone. ]

If the radio doesn't have an "AUX" mode, then this really isn't possible to do. Given your car is a 2000, it's highly unlikely an AUX port was even an option.

Two solid alternatives:

1. Purchase an FM Modulator, like this or this. They're relatively easy to install, and you can probably do it yourself. It basically works like an FM Transmitter, but connects directly into your antenna port for a much cleaner signal. It can also be switched on or off, so you keep full use of your radio.
   
2. Purchase an aftermarket head unit. It's certainly cheaper to do an FM Modulator, but upgrading to a good aftermarket head unit will make you happier in the long run. Especially with a stock head unit from 2000, you're bound to start having trouble with it at some point in the near future.

I have an 04 Subaru that doesn't even have an aux jack, and this has been the best purchase I've made recently. I use it every day, sound quality is good enough that I can hear audiobooks clearly over high speed road noise (and my car is noisy), bass sounds solid, music quality is way better than AM/FM radio. And it has a USB port so I can still charge my phone at the same time. The built in microphone isn't great, but it's good enough and is super low hassle and easy to use.

You can get a bluetooth Fm transmitter that will plug into your car and allow you to usb charge your phone and play music. Any 2003 car is not going to have the best sound but this will be much better than a cassette converter. Plus you have the added benefit of charging your phone. If you are looking into wiring them to the gpio pins, you have to make sure you find a dedicated relais that is able to switch the voltage and current and can be used with the pi. But please be careful when handling those. Don't just cut the cable and drill and place the wires into the relais. Use something like this to make sure you get a good contact. You are dealing with a lot of power afterall.

Car stereo is a little vague. We will need to know at least the model of your car and what you are actually trying to improve. Do you want upgraded speakers, upgraded headunit or just better sound and an aux input?

I've installed a bunch of car stereos for friends and I've also had good luck with inline fm modulator. Unlike regular fm modulator which wirelessly connect, these ones directly connect to the antenna cable located behind your headunit.

With these apps and OPO's double tap to turn on, using the phone in the car is a treat.

I just bought an anker Soundsync - has optical in and out for RX and TX. Sending audio to it is very good, has aptx HD as well as low latency for video. I'm pleased with it so far, mines permanently rigged into my amp but it does have a battery. For £30 it's great. The only thing that's temperamental is sending audio to two pairs of headphones but I'll never use that.

I have a bunch of items listed as highest priority. It was a guitar up until I bought one for myself at guitar center. Now I need things like a stand, picks, a strap, etc.

My highest priority item is probably this toolkit which has been on my WL since I joined RAOA. I have no idea why I still haven't just gotten it for myself considering I could have many times over. We have basically no tools in our apartment, so I'm even more useless than normal when it comes to fixing things.

I REALLY need a new 360 controller. I may or may not have shattered mine a while back, and I'm currently playing with it held together by tape, and sometimes a button or two doesn't work. It's really frustrating.

I'm your guy, I've tried tons of these. I have two setups that I can recommend.

I recommend this one the most, it's been the best and most reliable for quite some time for me. Sound quality is great. Also, it has bluetooth, which works great. Just a tip, use the bluetooth and download an app called Android Auto. It's a driving friendly interface that combines your music/podcast apps, navigation, phone app, and Google Voice commands for texts if you need. You can text by voice and it gives you the option to speak your text messages when you get them. You can also set the app to automatically start and shut off when your phone's bluetooth turns on or off.

Here's a tip for the best sound quality out of these if you'll only use your FM transmitter in your car and not the radio. Unscrew the antenna out of your car and toss it in a closet or somewhere. Then a lot of low to medium signal radio stations won't interfere. Which is the cause of like 90% of the bad quality you'll hear.

I used this Bluetooth to FM transmitter for my TJ before i had the option to install my deck into the TJ.

However if you are looking to use a deck I 100% recommend a Pioneer that's bluetooth ready. It's the easiest deck to pair to and use and the cost is low. (Literally find the deck model number in your bluetooth menu and connect to it) And bam it's connected. You don't need to go into any settings on the deck or anything (BT does need to be on). Stop by a display at a car audio place and try it. stupid easy.

Definitely consider the transmitter. Older models used to have serious interference problems, in large part because the wire connecting the MP3 player/whatever acted as an antenna in and of itself. Bluetooth models (and probably anything with a shielded wire) have fewer issues as it is intended to be an antenna so it doesn't interfere (think of it as the difference between a pipe that only leaks a drip rather than a spray).

In limited testing, it works fairly well. I still get a bit of noise at times (I am in an area with a lot of FM radio stations and I basically drive toward a giant one every morning), but it is at least comparable to listening to normal radio. For what it is worth, it is currently outputting in between two other stations (88.4 in between 88.3 and 88.5), so it is definitely able to work in busy areas and can work a lot better if I could be arsed to find a more free frequency.

And if you would rather use an MP3 player or anything else that can't connect by bluetooth, that model also has a normal audio in port. And either way, you can still use your port to charge your phone/whatever since it has a USB charging port too (that may or may not act as an input).

this is also a really good one it's a bluetooth in FM transmitter BUT it has AUX out so you don't need to use the FM stuff. As a bluetooth unit it's good, and gives you basic phone-call ability too.

So the basic would be a FM transmitter. Moving up from that you get a hardwired FM transmitter. Again up from that would be a device like the PAC-audio AAI-HD3 or the grom audio device. Again moving up you've got units from isimple and grom that add Bluetooth streaming and hands free capability. But at that price point it's starting to hit the level where it's more cost effective to replace the radio. I would recommend replacing the radio out of all the solutions available. It will add more functionality and just sound and work better in the long run.

Honestly you might want to look for a new FM transmitter. Sounds like yours is pretty weak. I got one just like you described in Amazon for $15 and it works great. Even if a channel is occupied this thing is powerful enough to override whatever's being broadcast, and there's almost no interference once I find a channel thats mostly static. Here's the one I got if you're interested.

My car stereo doesn't even have an AUX input and the way the stereo is integrated into the dash, no easy way to install an aftermarket stereo. The GoGroove connects to your phone with Bluetooth, and then transmits the signal over FM to your car stereo. I've had other FM transmitters over the years and this is the best I've used.

Of course it's not perfect. If you need to do important phone conferences from your car, I'd get something nicer. For the occasional call, this works pretty well. I use it more for streaming music from my phone than for calls.

I used an Anker Roav model that had far superior FN transmission strength than anything I had seen before. It has a boost FM setting that is really nice. I think they have a newer model, though.

There's the one I purchased. You can find plenty that look similar to it at a fraction of the price. Being as I didn't have PRIME at the time, I was trying to meet a requirement of $50 for free shipping. That's the only product that still works. Super lightweight, bendable, durable, clear. I love it.

That's right, for android phones you can only use it for calls. I would have noped out of that right at the start no matter how good the rest of the car is.

I've had this thing for years and it still works perfect. Sounds better than any other FM transmitter I've tried and it has line out in case you have an aux in on your car as well as line in for devices that don't have bluetooth. The line in works even when something is pared, so you don't have to turn off bluetooth.

This thing might be pretty cool, as it'd work for non-iPhones and work wirelessly for times when you don't need to plug it in to charge. It's fairly cheap with good reviews.

They aren't dumb questions. Yes, with two car kits and a home kit it would be extremely easy to switch between car, truck and dorm. I'm not sure if this is still the same, but the dorm could be a bigger issue. Back in the older days, the home kits needed the antenna to have a good line of sight with the satellite and with my XM radios, I sometimes had to have the antenna outside. The dorm probably wouldn't allow that.

But one thing to consider is what I do now. I do everything through my phone and either the car's bluetooth. I have an older car and use one of these bluetooth FM transmitters. It sounds good. And if you already have an account the online is pretty cheap.

The data costs could be cheaper than a radio, two car kits and a home kit.

I recommend getting a Bluetooth to radio adapter. You plug it into a cigarette lighter outlet, and it connects to your phone via Bluetooth, and plays music by radio signal. I found it to be pretty handy, and I don't have that much interference from radio, I just use one of the super low frequency's, like 88.7 or 88.9.

I have a Bluetooth to FM transmitter right now (This one 4.5/5 stars and 4,000+ reviews) but I'm still unhappy with the sound, but I'm not sure if it's the speakers, the stereo (Because there's no external amp, it's being powered by the stereo) or the speakers. It's fuzzy/muddy, it clips, etc.

Although replacing the speakers would be done anyways, so maybe I will just start with that..... And maybe put an external amp in between the MSSS and speakers, so it can be a little more powerful without having to remove the stereo..... Really the only "broken" part is the Mode button, which switches between top up or top down sound modes, doesn't work right so I had to put a McDonalds straw shim in to keep it depressed, and the cassette player doesn't work.

So I'm torn because I'd like to have a modern stereo and just be able to plug a device in, but I also don't want to get rid of the MSSS (Although I did see an AUX mod for it). Thanks for letting me talk this out by the way, it's definitely helping. I think I will start with the speakers, then maybe an amp, and if I still don't like the way it sounds, I will remove it, store it somewhere safe, and throw a new deck in there.

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this but I have a question regarding cassette adapters vs FM Transmitter Radio. I have an old 2004 Hyundai Sonata so I am currently using this in my car to listen to music on my phone. I've had it for a minute now but recently the quality has deteriorated and is no longer acceptable. I wanted to buy it again however I saw this product on amazon. Of course, you're going to get a little degradation of sound due to the FM transmission, but it sounds leagues better than a cassette adapter and allows you to make and receive calls, fast forward/backward, and stop pause your music.

The handsfree calling isn't the best on the other end, but they can hear me and the calls work just fine. I've never had one drop.

I own the SMARTmini model, and I've had it for almost 2 years, and it has worked flawless for me.

I bought this one as a gift for my husband for Christmas. Like you, his car only has a CD player with no tape deck or AUX input. He bought himself a cheaper version of these from Dollar General a few years ago and it was a piece of junk and so he never used it. The new one I got him though works awesome. No static, never cuts out, sound is crisp and clear. It was definitely worth the money.

My Lexus doesn't have one either and I got one of these bluetooth transmitters. Honestly, it's amazing. The tech is a lot better than it was even a few years back. Highly recommend for $16ish.

avoid FM transmitters.

They don't work very well. There are lots of ways you can get audio from your phone to your car stereo.

The cheapest way to do it correctly is an FM Modulator, these hook up directly into your car's antenna port. I had this one. Does require removal of the radio to plug into the antenna port, and it needs a power and a ground tapped into. But this way is totally worth it, if you don't want to tackle it yourself, a shop would probably charge about $50 to install it.

I wouldn't ever suggest an FM transmitter because you probably will be constantly fiddling with it while driving due to its un-reliable signal broadcasting, and the cheaper it is, the worse it will be at giving good signal.

Alternatively, the best way to go is just to replace your radio, JVC has a couple of cool inexpensive radios that are under $100, they have USB connectivity for iPods and iPhones, and also have bluetooth for handsfree calling and A2DP streaming (wireless audio streaming). I had one of these in my SVT Focus, it took about 15 seconds after starting the car for the radio to pair with the phone, but it would automatically start playing the last song I had playing in my music app, so there wasn't any fiddling with the phone every time I got in the car.

Edit: THIS is the newer model of the JVC I used to have, sounded really good too. Note that this doesn't have an optical slot.

The only problem I've ever had with it is the manual tuner dial can be a little flaky (doesn't register 1 out of every 5 notch-turns on average) but it's otherwise very solidly built with clear and powerful transmission, and has been a godsend in my older car that was built in that period before aux ports were standard but well after tape-decks.

HEY! do some research, take the proper steps and it can be an excellent option. Investing about $30-$50 in a decent transmitter will do you a lot of good. I have had this one for at least a year now and haven't a single issue. There are a couple models that might be better, mine is kind of outdated. If possible, disconnect your radio antenna if you don't ever plan on listening to the radio (such is my case).

Find an obscure channel to broadcast on (the transmitter should find one good enough) and it should come through crystal clear. I have an outlet in my console that the transmitter is in, set to the channel, and my radio never changes stations, so I every time I get in my car my phone wirelessly connects to the transmitter and Spotify begins playing. Haven't listened to the radio in ages, and it's wonderful. I never touch the thing but it has some pretty cool call features too.

Edit. I live near Detroit and there are plenty of stations around that give me no problems.

If you're hell bent on Aux installs, and want to keep the factory look, consider an in-dash FM modulator (like this one).

The way I see it though, joshuamnr is right - you should ditch the whole Aux idea and go bluetooth, because the quality is way better, plus it's a nice upgrade. I know that BMW head units are complicated though, and fits are not easy. I had a pioneer AVH series in my Jetta and I loved it - quality was awesome, and the screen was easy to see in the sunlight.

Quick search found this video for adding an aux to the OEM head unit. With that aux you could then plug it in to something like the ROAV Smartcharge Kit F2 (got one for my partner a year ago), now you have 2 high speed charging ports, and Bluetooth/hands free. Best part is no interference and better sound quality then using generic Bluetooth to FM adapters

Anker makes the roav smartcharge. here's a link. it works really well and provides oher benefits than just having your phone connect to Bluetooth. I use this along with tasker. It's the best solution I've used for getting my phone and car to work together.

I would assume it would work with apple only. I have the Uconnect screen in my journey. The easiest way to ditch the aux cord would be to buy a USB bluetooth, plug bluetooth adapter into the USB port and plug the AUX cable into that or buy one of the FM adapters.

I'm not sure if asking for advice about these devices is appropriate here in this subreddit. I'm mainly looking for a device that covers one ear and has a mic to call and maybe listen to podcasts when driving. Currently, I'm using the mic and earphone that came with my PS4.

I would love to have both a wired and wireless connection and, if at all possible, not required to have to charge (which I bet it rarely exists, if at all, for wireless). It can be a bluetooth device or whatever, but the only requirements are that it "cancels" noise the least amount as possible for safety when driving, one earphone, and a mic.

If it is possible, does an FM Transmitter like this one connecting to an audio-mic splitter and buying a mic work? I would be more at ease if I can use a mic that wraps around my head and use my car speakers to hear.

I would look for Kia Souls or Honda Fits. At your price point, those are the two likeliest candidates. Both can carry tons of stuff, decent mpg, and pretty reliable. Especially if you can drive a manual transmission, but their automatics are fine too.

You should be able to find something within under 75,000 miles at that price.

If you're looking for one of those, I've been pleased with this. It auto-tunes to available frequencies really well. The one con for me is the end of the cigarette adapter plug is very fragile. Mine broke after about a month and they sent me new parts, but they are just as fragile. If you change vehicles often you have to be mindful of the end and make sure it doesn't come unscrewed. Still happy with it.

If you can stream from a smartphone with Bluetooth, some of the Bluetooth FM transmitters are actually quite good. There typically isn't all the noise and static, maybe due to the lack of a wired connection.

Make sure to download a sound equalizer app and adjust to your liking as well, it can make a world of difference.

Three ways to do this, from merely okay to great...

1. FM transmitter. Will probably work, but results can be hit or miss. If you live somewhere where there's a lot of radio stations, it can be difficult to find a frequency where there's no interference.
   
2. FM modulator. Something like this will work: https://www.amazon.com/Scosche-FM-MOD01-Modulator-satellite-portable/dp/B0007THIDQ You'll also need antenna adapters since VW don't use the universal plug. I used something similar to get an iPod into an AM/FM radio for years. Much better than a FM transmitter since it's hard wired to the radio, and completely disconnects the antenna when it's in use do you don't get channel interference.

I use this one with my Nexus One and it fits my needs just fine.
A few things about it though:
The bass leaves much to be desired (I assume this is universal with FM transmitters).
Very nice and easy bluetooth pairing.
After pairing I just turn on my car and it automatically connects.
It has a usb port that can be used for charging a phone (I haven't had the need to try it yet).

I would go with number two if it's anything like mine.
I kinda regret not seeing it when I was in the market for one.
I would probably have bought it.

I use Flexsmart for mine. I really enjoy the sound quality over FM and I found syncing to be very easy. It also has a nice play/skip/back button set up. I don't even have to use my phone.

I just set up my Tasker settings with it, in my car I have to manually turn it on/off because its an always on outlet (will drain my car's battery) but once I do that, it automatically starts up spotify, and starts playing, then boots up GoogleMaps and switches to driving mode.

Once I am a bit more advanced I plan to have it ask if I need directions to my next event, and automatically import my next calendar location and start navigation.

It works fine but can't charge my Droid X. It would charge older, lower-power, Android/iPhone devices fine I'm sure. However, the nice part is that it still can take a cassette adapter and is handy not to need to plug the phone into anything for short trips. For long trips, I plug into a different charger (I have a power splitter).

it's been awesome. I discovered my car's powerpoint can be keyed or always-live (the powerpoint fuse is actually a jumper - move it over pins 1-2 to make it always-live and move it over pins 2-3 in the fusebox to make it hot when the key is turned and unpowered when the key is removed) -- this means I get in the car & turn on the key and bluetooth autoconnects to my phone. Turn off the car and it disconnects. I get a call & all I have to do is switch the radio to preset 1 (set to 88.1 - the frequency that worked best for me with the X2mini) and hit 'answer'. It's almost as good as a factory-installed system. Sound is crystal-clear with no interference or static.

I've got this one, it works great. I have to occasionally change the station I pick it up on when I travel long distances but it transmits great sound quality I think.

There are a bunch of FM transmitters that are only a little bit bigger than a regular car charger, and have different higher powered USB ports on them that may work for you.

Nice! I still have the stock radio, I've been using a cassette tape to aux adapter and it's been working great. You could also do a radio adapter but I haven't tried that personally yet.

The quality is extremely nice, and it works through bluetooth, so you don't need wires (there is an audio in if you want to attach any other device too). Also, it has a open usb port and cables to plug in your phone, ipod, etc. In addition, it has hands free calling (I don't bother with it, but it works). It is also the clearest fm transmitter I have ever used. Surprising, because I have never heard of the maker before

The FM transmitter I have let's you stream bluetooth to your stereo with your phone and it also has an analog AUX input and will play audio off of a micro SD card as well. Love it!

If your car doesn't already have any type of auxiliary it's not hopeless, there are these type of expansion boxes that can be plugged directly into a radio to add functionality.

Essentially the FlexSMART has two types of inputs and two types of outputs. You can either input your audio to it via Bluetooth or aux in. There's also two types of outputs, the FM transmitter or aux out. Assuming you have some way to input audio to your car via wire, a device like this can be used to upgrade a car to have Bluetooth by doing this: Music device > Bluetooth > FlexSMART > aux cable > car radio.

Bonus on the one I linked above is it as a built-in microphone and buttons on it for answering and ending calls along with media controls if you are connected via Bluetooth. Keep in mind I bought this years ago so there is probably a updated version or a better model made by someone else by now, but I'm sharing my personal experience so people know they do have options other than paying $500-ish to replace the radio.

This sub isn't very active, and I doubt you will get much advise on it. The facebook forums are the most active in regards to stereo modifications and replacement, but there is also some talk on Victory Forums and The VOG.
I went the ultra cheap route, and bought a Bluetooth Stereo Transmitter similar to the one linked. I load music onto a card from time to time and listen that way. I have almost zero control over what I'm listening to through it, but since I put every song on the card, I usually don't want to skip through it anyway.
Some of the guys on Facebook are selling new stereos, where you glue the removable faceplate of the radio to the dash, and mount the rest of the radio behind the fairing. There are even ways to make the stock radio controls work with the aftermarket radio. Good luck in your ventures!

I bought one of these for my S60 and it works really well. Rarely get much interference with the audio and the hands free calling is really nice.

I used this one for two years before I went from no Aux, no cassette deck to all Bluetooth everyone. It works great, great sound. Really the big limitations are finding an open FM frequency in your area and how good your car's speakers are.

I have a magnetic mount (and 2 magnetic popsockets so it doesn't wiggle at all) and just pop it on there and plug it in. Connects automatically with the receiver. I usually listen to music (or the Yankee game) on my phone through the receiver, and if the phone rings or I make a call it pauses automatically. What kind of range do you want? 12V battery + adapter + Car FM adapter. Plug in your phone and you can transmit whatever audio you play. Perfectly legal under FCC Part 15 rules.

I'm hesitant to get any new units because the car is an 89 IROC and is original minus the radio. I don't want some weird looking Pioneer or anything in this car. If anything I'd probably get an old OEM replacement and use a cassette adapter.

I like this solution. It's pretty similar to what I'm using actually, which is this. It connects wirelessly to the phones bluetooth and transmits audio to an FM station. Also has a setting to locate a clear FM station to broadcast on the fly.

I use this in my '06 Mazda 3. Plugs straight into the cigarette lighter so it loses power when that does. It then transmits to the car via FM radio. Sound quality is therefore FM radio-level; not audiophile quality but it serves well enough. Only issue is that on longer trips you might have to change the station it uses as you pass through an area where there is already something more powerful on your frequency. The frequency is settable so not a big deal.

Probably waterproof the whole thing up a bit, and stuff it somewhere safe.

But definitely confirm the FM solution works first. The manual seems to indicate that, but I haven’t personally tested/confirmed that FM sharing still allows communication.

Keep the radio as is and get one of these, much cheaper and easier solution.

Same. An older model (2004 3.0L H6), currently at 130,000 miles. I absolutely love the thing. It's all the car I think I'll ever need. It's spacious enough that you can move a heck of a lot of stuff with it, it's powerful enough that if you put your foot down you get decent acceleration even at 60-70 mph, it gets half-decent mileage (~25 mpg) and it is small enough that it doesn't feel like a "big" car.

Yeah, in that case, you'd need a USB-C to 3.5mm jack adapter. There are other options, you can see if your car supports bluetooth natively and if it doesn't, you can buy a bluetooth transmitter off Amazon for about 20 bucks (like this one) and have it to where your phone connects to the transmitter via bluetooth and the transmitter sends out whatever music you set to play on your phone via radio waves and you just tune your car's radio to that specific channel.

It would probably be more cost effective to get an FM transmitter such as this:

Thats just one suggestion, do a little research on these devices, as the sound quality can vary greatly.
You can have a new stereo installed at Best Buy/local car audio shop, or perhaps even get a patch cable wired into your existing stereo, but those options are gonna start at like $250 and go up, so it might be worth the $10-$20 to try one of these out before you drop real money.

For best ease of use, I used an audio input FM modulator which basically adds an aux input and hijacks the antenna at the flick of a switch.

I was in a similar situation as you (my car doesn't have a AUX or bluetooth hookup), but I found this and it works amazingly. Now I can play as much as I want in the car considering that also will charge your phone as well.

Well the absolute cheapest route would be to install a hardwired FM modulator. Here's one that I've used before; you can probably shop around and find it cheaper though. If you want to go with a new head, which would be better for audio quality, I suggest you plug your car information and desired features into crutchfield and sort the results by price.

Or if your car has bluetooth or FM Radio, but your phone only has a 3.5, you can connect the phone to it that way as well. And it has a nice USB port for charging.

So there's options.

I looked into a number of different options and this was the solution I eventually settled on. Sound quality is easily good enough for simple narration, and if you get an fm transmitter with bluetooth you can have it auto-pair with your phone when you get in. Won't find a better method at that price range.

If you spend a more, you can change the whole head unit. Maybe something like this JVC. If you install it yourself, it will cost you around $100.

If you are keeping this car for another few year, i suggest change the headunit, it will give you more flexibility in the future. If you're planning to trade it or sell it in the near future, get the FM transmitter.

If you're on a budget, the Griffin iTrip Universal is okay too.

By washed out I mean at the high volumes the sound becomes gravelly and loses definition, and does not sound good or accurate. Currently the system is the stock head unit (which is 29 years old), these 6.5" Sony speakers, and a bluetooth transmitter. My best guess is either the head unit doesn't have enough ass to drive the speakers or the speakers just aren't amazing for playing that loudly. My phone volume is maxed out too.

I use something like this in my old pickup. The device acts as a Bluetooth device. You sync your phone to the device then tune the FM radio to an unused channel and you hear your calls via the FM radio. The device has a microphone. Works pretty well.

Does the car have an Aux cable input? You may be able to transit to the cars speakers using the aux input too, using the phone as a "microphone."

My car has BT but only for phone, not for audio. When I want turn by turn GPS, I set the input to Aux and I can hear Google Maps telling me the directions.

I had a similar problem, my car stereo has no Bluetooth,tape deck or AUX input. I ended up getting this fm transmitter from Amazon. It uses bluetoooth to connect to the phone and the fm transmitter to broadcast to the radio. I know its more than you are looking for but it has definitely worked out good for me.

I have this and it works wonders in my car, even on long drives. It supports Bluetooth and an aux cable, and the sound quality is fantastic. If you're using Bluetooth you can also answer calls, dictate texts with Siri, etc. Way cheaper than getting a new head unit, especially if you have trouble finding one that will fit in your car.

I used to own this unit before I got my aftermarket head unit. Flexsmart X2 it will automatically look for the FM frequency with the least amount of interference when you held down the center button. It was pretty clear in quality in my 2003 accord with window embedded FM antenna.

I always figured that the FM transmitters were ALL junk since the FCC crippled the output power but then I picked up one of these and I have no complaints. I have expensive headphones, dac/amp and I care about sound quality, and it's perfectly acceptable.

Note: I really do believe it's in violation of the max allowed output power, because it will stomp on somewhat nearby FM stations. Worth every dollar.

Plug in a radio transmitter and use your phone. Why use something inefficient like CDs when you have a better and affordable option. CDs aren't even that old, if you want to be an "old soul" you could at least use cassettes.

yeah, I've been thinking about doing a workaround with the GOgroove wireless fm transmitter. I can use the bluetooth+fm transmitter for audio, an I think it has a USB port on the side I can use to connect a power cable. I just wish there was a clean "all in one" micro usb solution.

Oh well, at least I can use tasker to automate it. that or the NFC stickers I'm getting :D

You sure can listen to music without a headphone jack. Unless of course, your radio also doesn't work.

That's just me playing devil's advocate though. I like using my wired headphones, so I won't be buying the new pixels if they don't come with a headphone jack. Shame too, because I was really hoping to go that route when they were released.

There's kinda a lot going on here that needs some correction. For one, a ham license (it's not an acronym, so it's not a HAM license) doesn't just let you broadcast anything anywhere...there are some very specific bands.

Second, when you said "FM transmitter", my first thought was one of those little audio transmitters that they make to connect an audio source to any standard FM broadcast radio receiver like this. It's those that have the 200 foot regulation.

FM is a modulation scheme, so you can modulate anything FM on essentially any frequency...but then you mention ~5GHz, and the frequencies are near, but not entirely within the 5.8GHz ISM band range, for which you need no license--however there are still restrictions on what you can and can't do. So I don't really know what exactly you're trying to accomplish, and it seems like neither do you--and that's not me being a dick to you or anything...we get it, this is complicated.

Why don't you just like the device you're wanting to buy so we can read some more info on it.

I'm in a similar situation. I've been using this fm transmitter from Amazon for the last year. It costs $13 and works fine for Charlotte on 88.1. It plugs into your lighter for power and the other into the earphone hole on your phone or MP3 player so you can play anything you want. The plug into the lighter also has a USB plug so you can charge a device at the same time.

The iTrip works very well and also charges your phone. But if you're not afraid of doing a little light modification behind your dash and want a super reliable setup, look into an FM Modulator

Speaking of which, even if your car stereo unit doesn't have one of these dedicated CD changer or satellite radio connectors, there's one solution that will work with any FM car radio and isn't a short-range transmitter: an RF modulator (FM modulator).

This is what early aftermarket CD changers used. Rather than broadcasting an FM signal over the air, the modulator gets added inline with your antenna lead (antenna lead plugs into the modulator, modulator plugs into your radio's antenna jack), so it can insert your aux line input as an FM radio signal directly through the antenna lead itself.

If you can get behind your radio, this should help out. $40 and crystal clear audio since it hijacks your cars antenna when turned on (same why a Sirius satellite radio works)

For $23 you can get a Bluetooth FM Transmitter on Amazon.

Wireless sync to your phone as soon as you get in the car.

That cassette thing wouldn't work in my truck so I bought myself one of these. Works like a charm with Bluetooth.

You can buy a FM transmitter that plugs into the headphone jack of your device. You just set your car radio to the frequency the little transmitter is sending on and you hear your device like its a radio station.
