I spent some time looking into this awhile back.

Mycelium is part of the mushroom. You would never have fruit bodies without mycelium and fruit bodies are basically just densely layered, laminated mycelium that have started to lose vitality as they move away from active growth and into spore production.

And of course, you can read the label and see that while Host Defense widely uses mycelium, they also include fruitbodies, even in their top product:

https://www.amazon.com/Host-Defense-MyCommunity-Capsules-Mushroom/dp/B002WJ1BZK/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1519140270&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=Host%2Bdefense&th=1

The Amazon reviews are super positive, it seems there are huge numbers of people that love the product - whatever the debate may be about fruit body vs mycelium. And you see their product line everywhere, it seems it is very popular with health food store buyers,

A third party immunology lab also tested their stuff, and the products tested very well:

http://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/Immune-Benefits-of-Mushroom-Mycelium-Cultured-Substrate-Confirmed-1002362606?op=1

Part of what this research showed is that the mycelium works.... and the rice cultured by the mycelium also works to support the immune system. Rice is often considered a healthy food on its own... and data suggests that mycelium transforms the rice into something even healthier.

This is actually a really cool gateway into understanding the complexity of mushroom organisms. Fruit bodies are great sources of nutrients and the mycelium itself contains many of the same compounds. But why would cultured rice have more immune benefit than plain rice? What is going on?

You have to think about how the organism actually works. Mushrooms are decomposers. They break down organic matter, absorb it and use that energy to grow. As mycelium grows in its environment, it is releasing digestive enzymes from the mycelium.

If you follow Stamets’ work (he creates Host Defense), he is really focused on these enzymes from the mycelium. There are a lot of new compounds found there that appear to be very powerful. His work with the Dept of Defense BioShield program focused on these types of extracts.

And, he’s on to this whole new exploration around mycelium extracts and bees. Washington State University has partnered with Stamets and his team and they are finding that mycelium extracts help reduce viruses in bees and keep them alive longer. They’re only using mycelium extracts, not fruit body!

https://youtu.be/Y_lqIUlON1s

https://news.wsu.edu/2015/02/17/video-can-mushrooms-save-the-honey-bee/

With Host Defense, you get product that is widely used and popular, tested to actually work for immune support and the people that make it have decades of experience and are pushing some really amazing research forward. If you look at the bigger picture, it’s a great choice.

u/jboygold · 1 pointr/Supplements

Phenylpiracetam is more of a nootropic/stimulant... it sounds like you are looking more for supplements to improve your general health/mood/well-being. Phenylpiracetam is great for a one-time pick me up but tolerance to the stimulant effects builds after a couple days (quicker than even caffeine), and there is even a minor crash (nothing in the realm of amphetamines but a crash nonethelesss). I would steer clear of this -racetam for daily use.

If you want supplements to improve mood and energy levels, cordyceps is great. I take 1g a day in the mornings and I can really notice a mood boost and increased wakefulness throughout the day. It can be a little pricey, but it is one of the few supplements that has a noticeable impact on my day. And unlike with phenylpiracetam, the effects appear to get better and better the more you take it - no crash, no tolerance. Make sure you pick a good, reliable brand. Nootropicsdepot is the only place I use for mushroom extracts. They also have some of their items listed on amazon if you prefer to purchase using that route, just search 'nootropicsdepot cordyceps' in the search bar. They source from RealMushrooms, so you could also go that route if you want. You really want pure, unadulterated, tested extracts, so I would highly recommend paying the extra money to get their products.

As for D3, I usually take 5000IU a day but it is generally recommended to take 2000IU (I just personally think that is too low, especially during the winter months). Check out Examine's article on it. I take this brand from amazon. Its cheap, has around 500 doses (if you want to take 2000IU, their bottle has the dosing around half that), and has Vitamin K2 MK7, which pretty much everybody is deficient in.

I don't take ZMA, don't really think anybody needs to but if you want to take it and find that it helps you, I'm not stopping you!

As for other additional supplements you might want to take - I would look into Rhodiola Rosea (great for reducing fatigue particularly related to physical activity and stress, minor stimulant effect, reduces anxiety), and of course the good ol' fish oil. Maybe look into yohimine and ALCAR as well! Creatine is great, definitely good that you take that.

Let me know if you have any questions!

I went to the video and found the brand on amazon

Host Defense - Lion's Mane Mushroom Capsules, Natural Support for Mental Clarity, Focus, Memory, Cerebral and Nervous System Health, Non-GMO, Vegan, Organic, 60 Count https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002WJ2ALO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Ev3KDbP3CXHAN

but there is another brand named genius that has triple the amount of positive reviews and looks like it has two extra ingredients.

Genius Mushroom - Lions Mane, Cordyceps and Reishi - Immune System Booster & Nootropic Brain Supplement - Wellness Formula for Natural Energy, Stress Relief, Memory & Liver Support, 90 Veggie Pills https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078SJ9F5S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_nD3KDb520NFSM

Do I stick with host defense in the vid or try this other more popular one?

u/-kodoku- · 2 pointsr/Nootropics

I haven't tried it myself, but Double Wood Supplements sells it and they're an excellent vendor. I've tried their rhodiola rosea and alpha-gpc. Both worked great and their rhodiola rosea is the second best I've ever had (first being Super Rhodiola by Ceretropic). If you get their lion's mane on Amazon, I would wait until they restock instead of buying from the available seller. I believe the regular price is $18 and has prime shipping. The available seller is selling it for $40 and offers no prime shipping.

u/gyutan · 3 pointsr/Bento

Furikake is easy to make at home. My aunt would make it all the time after making dashi. I would suggest to use mushroom powder instead of katsuobushi (The fish) for that umami.

Admittedly I have never done this with furikake, but I do use mushroom as substitute for stocks in hot pots, soups, etc for vegan/vegetarian friends when they come over.

Here is a link to shiitake mushroom powder. This company also makes others. I will say it is also easy to make your own at home with dried mushrooms and a spice grinder. Best of luck. mushroom powder amazon

When I was trying to sustain weight while working out everyday I had a good daily 3 meals that I was satisfied with and kept me energized, healthy, and and focused throughout my day:

Breakfast: Protein smoothie: whey, cow milk, hemp seeds, blueberries, banana, cherries, and shroom supplement. I work early mornings so if I'm not fasting I like to drink this throughout the morning hours as it keeps me full with the carbs, fats, and protein and focused with well sourced shroom supplement. This is the most efficient one I found and I do notice a change in focus as well as endurance if I workout in the morning (after consistent use of course)

Lunch: Yogurt, Flax seeds, Fruit. Sometimes I'll just grab a clif bar.

Dinner: Protein and veggies. Usually a fatty steak and sauteed veggies like asparagus, brussel sprouts, cauliflower. If not a fatty meat then chicken with fingerling potatoes.

u/smithmcmagnum · 10 pointsr/JoeRogan

I do notice a difference with Alpha Brain, but it's too expensive. I've used several kinds of "brain pills" and nootropics and individual brain supplements but honestly I've only noticed a difference with Alpha Brain.

Also, New Mood and ShroomTech Sport seem to work. However, for New Mood replacement, just get any calming or "mood support" blend with theanine and 5-htp.

https://www.amazon.com/NOW-Mood-Support-Veg-Capsules/dp/B000TD0PXU/

For ShroomTech sport, I've found a bottle of Now Foods cordyceps is much cheaper and works better.

https://www.amazon.com/NOW-Cordyceps-750-Veg-Capsules/dp/B0045X9VQC/

DigesTech can be replaced with Now Foods digestive enzymes for much cheaper, as well.

https://www.amazon.com/NOW-Super-Enzymes-180-Capsules/dp/B0013OXKHC/

A lot of the stuff on Onnit works, but nothing is a magic cure for anything. The most any of these will do is give you a slight edge in each area. But, I think that slight edge is worth it. However, on Onnit, it's just 3x as expensive as it needs to be. Do a bit of research and you can find a lot of the same stuff for cheaper.

u/simendem · 2 pointsr/schizophrenia

I recommend taking Amyloban 3399. It's what I take for schizophrenia. It's an extract from an edible mushroom known as Lion's Mane, that balances dopamine in the brain, promotes brain growth, and protects against grey matter loss. I would also recommend eating peanuts or some source of Vitamin E + Niacin (Vitamin B1). Both are great for healthy brain function and a lot of people are difficient in those.

u/Kostya93 · 2 pointsr/MultipleSclerosis

Here is a Lion's Mane research article describing the main active ingredients and their effects. Here is a background article about the need for extraction to improve bioavailability.

The brand you linked to is fine in itself but it is not an alcohol or dual extract (essential, because terpenes are alcohol-solubles) and it is optimised for beta-glucan, which is not relevant in this case.

The supplement should ideally list terpenes and be alcohol or at least dual extracted if you are after the Lion's Mane NGF-boosting / myelin protecting effects. This seems to be the best option, but it is not available currently.

u/Kleosi · 1 pointr/LifeProTips

http://www.amazon.com/Host-Defense%C2%AE-MyCommunity%C2%AE-Capsules-Comprehensive/dp/B002WJ1BZK/

These are really surprisingly strong/effective, especially with your recommended amount of vitamin D daily. They've helped me out a ton over the last few years.

Definitely pricy, though. I take them for short periods of time (how mushroom supplements are recommended to be taken anyway). Feel free to read through the reviews for better information.

(This is all in addition to the aforementioned sleep and fluids.)

I have taken thrive for almost 2 months now. Lots of different mushrooms including all the ones stamets talks about and yes, I feel much more cognitive clarity. College just seems easier now and I’m taking my hardest classes so far this term.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B073DZ1SF8/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1517593186&sr=8-1-spons&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=thrive+mushrooms&psc=1

Going to try some different companies over this year and find which one I like best.

Almost exact same here but I'm improving profoundly after 4 months of barely being able to smell or taste much. I have been searching for the answer and this is working for me: bioenhanced alpha lipoic acid: https://www.amazon.com/Doctors-Best-Stabilized-R-Lipoic-BioEnhanced/dp/B000I4C19G lion's mane mushroom make sure it's the biomass of the mushroom like the one below: https://www.amazon.com/Lions-Mane-Mushroom-Extract-Adaptogenic/dp/B06XJVR45D/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?keywords=shroom+lions+mane&qid=1573020531&sr=8-4

Sorry to hear that. I have a good friend with serious depression, so I know how hard that can be. I *don't* have serious depression, but every once in a while I do get "down". The thing that helps me the most is lion's mane mushroom extract. Not a cure-all, but takes the edge off and makes things that would normally bother you, not bother you. Legal and reasonably cheap ($30) [on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/Mushroom-Extract-Powder-Real-Mushrooms/dp/B01DKZZFCE).

The other thing that helps me is running. When The Vandy Nurse broke up with me, I started running 10 miles a day a couple days a week. It's impossible to be depressed when you're exhausted and can't move without something hurting. My body was pumping out endorphins by the gallon, and it felt rather euphoric. Do some exercise, and I don't mean "take a hike", but something that's at the physical limit of what you can do. Run 10 miles, or try a few hours of P90X or Insanity. You'll feel a ton better.

The bleeding edge of depression research is ketamine, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and psilocybin (magic mushrooms). All three seem to have efficacy against treatment-resistant depression. Ironically, the easiest to acquire and possibly the most productive is also the most illegal. If you spend a few minutes searching on "shrooms", you'll figure out how to acquire all the things you need legally. I have zero experience taking psilocybin or any other tryptamine analogues, but I helped aforementioned friend grow some to treat their depression. When they work, they *work*. Like a total mental reset button.

https://www.popsci.com/magic-mushrooms-safe#page-5

https://www.sciencealert.com/scientists-discovered-how-magic-mushrooms-alleviate-depression-antidepressants-psilocybin-amygdala

As Tennessee can't even let dying cancer patients use weed to treat their pain because "Jeebus", legal psilocybin is probably 20 years out. I've never heard of police raiding a house for growing personal-use amounts of shrooms, but you are taking some risk by doing so.

Ketamine works for some, not others. For some people it's absolutely magic. For my friend, it worked a week at a time, which was better than nothing. It can have serious side-effects with long-term use, including bladder toxicity, but if it works, it may be worth it. Scientists have already determine that it isn't ketamine itself which does it, but one of its metabolites (2R,6R)-HNK (hydroxynorketamine) which does it. The metabolite may be safer than ketamine itself, and once scientists understand its method of action, they can likely design a drug with the same effect but much safer.

TMS does work, but from what I've read takes multiple sessions, isn't cheap, and is only available at a small number of centers around the country. Vanderbilt apparently has one, which is good, but you'll likely need insurance to cover it.

Hope it helps. What you're going through sucks donkey balls, but it isn't your fault. Don't blame yourself. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other. That mantra has helped me get through the past few months. Don't think, just do.

u/hercules_rokefeller · 2 pointsr/schizophrenia

I’m sorry you are going through this and are without meds for so long. I did take lion’s mane briefly and while I felt like it didn’t do anything at the time in retrospect looking back it probably helped me with my symptoms and I think I am going to try taking it again.

I’m just now realizing my voices came back after I stopped taking lions mane. It was so gradual at the time that I did not recognize it.

Best of luck to you and I hope you can get through it until you can get an antipsychotic in January. I’d highly recommend lions mane as well.

Also they have 120 days supply of it on amazon for $19. A better deal than 180 days for $54 for the specific brand mentioned in the other post.

2 capsules a day which was 1g.

Tbh, I wasn't doing enough reading at the time. Usually I measure impact of memory by how well I retain stuff after I read. However, I'm an absent-minded professor type. Usually am not reflecting on day to day things like how my day went or whatnot, so remembering things like what I had for lunch or dinner or what I was doing the other day or what was said in a particular conversation (became really good at this) was improved.

u/djwonderful · 5 pointsr/MushroomGrowers

First, the bags.

I'm currently getting mine from http://unicornbags.com/

  1. Type 14A

Lions mane LOVES wood. Wood is a must for lions mane. I use hardwood fuel pellets and sawdust from the a local mill. I supplement with 20% wheat bran (only bran I can get from local tractor supply). And gypsum of course.

You must sterilize the bags, this is were a BIG pressure cooker comes in handy.

Lions mane wants to fruit before it fully colonizes, so be sure to use a lot of spawn to the bags and shake it up.

Oh, you are going to need a fruiting chamber if you don't have one already.

PM me your address and I will send a few over to you.

For Gourmet, everything is kept on cultures. If you are going to get into this to constantly grow, certainly need a pressure cooker and use the cup of agar tek, or peti dishes with agar.

~$25 for a 5 pound bag of spawn is not unreasonable though.

The culture we have is not very "seafood" I have had them in the past when it tastes much more like crab or lobster. I find it to have a subtle taste. Goes great when you make it into something. I can't imagine just eating it like an apple.

Finally, maybe you want to try it out before you go whole hog with your new hobby:

Yup, specifically this one. I usually drop a full dropper's worth into my mouth. I've read weird things like it should be sublingual, it works better when heated, etc... Just trying to find the best option, I guess.;

Thanks again!

Second that. Also, maybe try some fulvic/humic minerals with that. I've found to always get an energy boost with that. Would also recommend Lion's Mane mushrooms(from fruiting bodies). Lion's Mane works best with 100 mg niacin.

Wow I rarely hear people talk about cordyceps. I'm so glad you stopped by this thread!

A long time ago I bought some Now Foods Cordyceps pills. Are those cordyceps the same as the cordeyceps militaris youy're talking about? I think the NOW foods I have is sineses (as opposed to militaris).

How long have you been taking it and how does it make you feel? What is the theory you have behind it's improvement of your energy level?

For me, I bought it because I heard in Chinese medicine it is often used to treat snoring and insomnia.

u/almcintosh · 2 pointsr/nutrition

It looks legit, but there’s only two reviews. I’m always a little leery of that. I found this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01BMPK5C4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_5h9TBbFQQ802K that has more reviews and a decent mix. I honestly don’t know about the other mushrooms, but it says it has 30% Lion’s Mane.

P.S. I love when I look up “Lion’s Mane” it’s a bunch of fake manes for dogs haha.

I found these guys: Real Mushrooms.. Been using their Lions Mane for like a month and I feel more of an improvement than some other brands I've tried (Stamets brand and another). Seems like I can think more objectively and I'm more articulate when speaking (always been a challenge for me)..

I actually know the area where they are made too. Roberts Creek in British Columbia.. Full of super hippies. If anyone is going to produce a quality product with mushrooms, it would be there. Roberts Creek also is where Holy Crap Cereal comes from :D

yeah they're legal in the US, amazing but very subtle and they work best after a few weeks, you take two every day.

You probably heard about them when Paul Stamets was on the show. I buy his stuff, but I get them on amazon cause they're cheaper there than on his website.

u/ajstarks87 · 3 pointsr/MultipleSclerosis

I use it! I can speak to what is has really done, but my brother who also has MS takes the same sups and cooks with the actual mushrooms and says his flares are less frequent recently, so who knows. This is the one we both take:

Here are some links for Porcini Mushroom Powder, Portobello Mushroom Powder, Shiitake Mushroom Powder, Reishi Mushroom Powder, and powders consisting of mixed assorted mushrooms like this five mushroom one, this fourteen mushroom one, and my favorite of the lot: this ten mushroom blend. I utilize mushroom powders in soups, sauces, gravies and dry rubs for steaks and meats. One of my favorite ways to use porcini mushroom powder is to make homemade or frozen French fries, dribble them with truffle-infused oil, sprinkle sea salt and porcini mushroom powder and grated sharp white cheddar on top. It's my own version of poutine!

I almost forgot to mention RealMushrooms. They also use Nammex mushrooms and they have quality products, it appears that the cordyceps mushroom in particular is good value compared to ND's product. If we are just looking at actives of course. They also have a 25% off coupon that you can use on amazon.

There's an ongoing study with some extract from mushrooms called AHCC, based in a previous finding. The pills are very expensive and the study uses a dose that I can't pay I just buyed 2 "flasks?" and honestly I don't trust those Amazon verified reviews. Right now they are doing a study on vaccination with people who already has them -it's in Paris if I'm not mistaken-it doesn't cure but for some people it has helped to avoid new ones, I'm more confident on this. In fact there's a previous one. I got vaccinated just in case it helps and I keep my fingers crossed. Always keep an eye on the Cypep-1 development, they are in Phase I expecting results for early next year.

I drank Four Sigmatic coffee for awhile and like it as a quick morning brew when I didn't feel like brewing with my Chemex. The coffee is zero calories if you'd like to try that.

You can always take your mushrooms in other, more calorie free forms. I've been looking to try these capsules since I could take these and still have my coffee-snob coffee.

u/rathskellar · 2 pointsr/Soulnexus

Cool, thanks. I take Rhodiola, Ashwaghanda, Bacopa, Ginseng, and I take a blend of 6 different mushrooms. 2 of which are listed in that page you linked. I have Velvet Beans (mucuna puriens) but haven't tried those yet.

Here's the blend of mushrooms I have. I actually haven't started eating this one yet because I'm still [on my older] (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B073DZ1SF8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1) batch. This one was the first one I tried, by the way. They're all good.

u/SlowExplosions · 5 pointsr/Nootropics

Lion's mane mushroom extract works well for focus, anxiety, mood. It keeps you calm and lasts all day long too. Just make sure you buy from a seller that utilizes the fruiting body rather than just the mycelium.

There's this but it has no bottle. None of the measured droppers on Amazon seem to have screw tops for putting on a bottle, either. Strange.

I know this will sound strange, but this product comes with a dropper in the bottle that denotes 1mL in .25 increments. It's the only one that comes in a bottle I know of and, once I had used up the extract, I cleaned the bottle and am saving it for future storage/measurement needs.

The extract isn't that bad, either. You can definitely get more intense results from lab chems, however.

u/CafeRoaster · 1 pointr/MultipleSclerosis

Interesting. Do you have some reading materials for this?

edit: I assume something like this is what you'd consider to be better?

u/KoblinV3 · 1 pointr/Nootropics

This happens to me when I forget to take it. So maybe just ensure you take it the same times everyday. Then if you gey a headache before your second dose take it earlier until you stop having them.

Also I use a brand that uses the fruiting body as opposed to the whole thing. It also doesn't use rice unlike most other lion's mane extract. Just a thought but I know stems from weed can give you headaches so maybe there could be a similar phenomenon here. Worth trying to see if that would help anyway.

Yes, I've tried Lions Mane, but it makes my stomach feel sick and it's not as potent, I don't really feel it's effects. Maybe it's not fresh enough, or maybe it's because I started on Amyloban first, but you can certainly try it. It's much cheaper.
I would recommend the bulk version over the capsule version. Then add it to food, like milk or milkshake.

Hey, I am in the US and take the following product. I take 2 capsules per day (1g), so it lasts me a month and is $50 per bottle. I don’t know if 3g per day would be more effective, but I just take 1g to save money.

u/brainjacked · 2 pointsr/Nootropics

Are you spraying properly? Fluid shouldn't drip from your nose and you shouldn't feel/taste it in the back of your throat. Getting consistent results with the sprays is hard and requires patience to let it absorb in each nostril, spray by spray. I ended up doing 4 sprays, 2-3 times a day, lazily and having no idea how much semax I was actually getting. I've used both Semax and NA-Semax sprays.

I eventually switched to NA-Semax-A subq injections. It's not hard and semax alleviates any needle anxiety after the first time. I respond well to NA-Semax-A at 800mcg. If you have a 100mcg spray, you would need 8 sprays to hit that level (and some won't be absorbed).

45 min before I play sports in the early evening, I take 2 sprays of NA-Semax, 1ml of Lion's Mane extract, 6mg ionic boron, 300mg Optimal Choline Complex and .5ml of ceretropic's caffeine/nalt. This stack improves my speed, strength, coordination and endurance to such a degree that it feels like cheating.

u/Icantletafriendsee · 1 pointr/StackAdvice

When and how should I take these? I just ordered Lions Mane. I have Lithium Orotate which I plan to take twice a day. Then there's the Bacopa. Should I take the Lithium, Bacopa, and Lions Mane all at the same time in the morning? I want to fit NAC in there too somehow, if it's not redundant.

And could someone clarify on Unlimitles stack? What are those, how to take them, the doses, the brands... Is that even reasonable to all mix?

u/ilikeacids · 3 pointsr/Supplements

What are your thoughts on products by Host Defense such as this one? Are these effective products?

u/HurricaneHenry · 3 pointsr/StackAdvice

I've taken Venlafaxin (SNRI) and Lion's Mane without issue. The Lion's Mane didn't do anything at all for me though. Later I heard that the quality of the supplement is key. You need a supplement that's made from the fruiting body - not from the mycelium. I haven't tried it, but this one looks promising (and pricey).

Real Mushrooms 5 Defenders : Seems more for immune system from the reviews.

The one i linked has some reviews where they are adding cocoa powder and less mushroom. I don't mind taking a blend for over all health benefits and another from ND for something specific.

Heard good things on Cordyceps. Do you know anything specific for brain/memory? I checked on Lions mane but it seems the effects wear off. I don't want anything as additive or being dependent on it.
