These are my real nails now!!!! They DO need to be encased in nail polish since they’re pretty flimsy, but no more fake nails. The polish helps toughen them up.

I used the bulk packages of Kiss nails, petite since I wanted them short. I used Kiss glue as well- both the nails and glue were recommended to me by someone’s mom who was a nail tech. I found the nails stuck a lot better if I roughed up the underside with a metal file. Making sure to press VERY firmly while the glue dried helped a ton, and just making sure I had some glue with me since they do sometimes fall off. If possible, wear gloves while doing stuff like washing dishes since water can make them fall off, but you can just put them back. I would also always double check them after I showered or whatever.

Again, I didn’t want anything crazy... just something that looked normal so I cut and shaped them short with a metal file. I actually lovingly called them “nail jail” since it was physically impossible for me to bite the nails under them. Here’s a picture of me wearing Kiss nails about 2 years ago, and some info on how I painted them.

As far as removal goes, you can soak them off in acetone, ooooooor just get a bowl of warm water and soak your hands until the nails fall off. Then you use acetone to clean off the glue bits left on your nails. With this method you can even clean the underside of the plastic nails and apply them again later if you really liked the design.

Glass files were less expensive than I thought! Looks like $10 for 3 from Amazon. They’re just gentler on nails and I guess are supposed to also help layers not flake off? I dunno, I just read about it and liked using them. All the fancy nail art youtubers love them so they must be good. 😆

Always happy to help another nail biter. I felt like no one else struggled like I did and it was so hard to find info I could actually use. I guess I sorta just came up with a method that worked for me, and I’m not tempted to bite anymore. They’re too pretty.

Okay, so for the chipping so quickly, check out this super crappy video!. I never could find a close up of exactly how to do it on Youtube, so yeah. There's my face. This will help to extend the life of the top coat and thus mani! If it gets on your fingers, no biggie. It comes off in the shower or with acetone. :)

Here's what I use for a base coat, and generally for making my nails long and strong. Bats suggestion is another super common one! This one just happened to work well for me to help with chipping, so I figured kill two birds with one stone. I pair this with (I go through rotations and use what fits my needs...) either seche or this quick dry topper Poshe. Both seem to be nice, but I have noticed Poshe can be easier on the cuticle edges when it dries... Less pull of the coloring perhaps?

This is the set I use for clean up around the cuticle edges right now. The "ideal" is to paint a centimeter or something AWAY from the cuticle, then use the brushes (I dip in pure acetone) to perfectly clean up the line or round it out! The top coat generally should land/start in that blank space, so it's double effective to paint away from the edge initially. :D

Also, it will make a huge difference if you start pushing your cuticles back! I use this metal set because I'm irrationally terrified of getting splinters from the wooden ones. I use a cheap walmart cuticle softner before pushing back, but this is my dream formula since it's so highly recommended. BY pushing them back when you start to see them, it helps clear the nail and thus have less to let the polish stick to! Hurray! You're not supposed to use the scary looking scissor thingies too often, but I do use it on one very specific corner on my left thumb. I have one stupid stubborn cuticle skin flap that refuses to go away without being gently tweezed/cut off. I always make sure to wash with an anti bacterial soap immediately after and like to slather on some delicious cuticle oil LIKE PUMPKIN BANANA BREAD after to give them some softness again!

Oh, okay, that's doable. :D

Typically nail biters will gnaw at their cuticles and apply toothy pressure all over the nail plate, essentially damaging the new growth or matrix causing new growth to be weak and shoddy.

It'll take about 6 months to see real improvement without product and coverup if you stopped biting right this second.

So advice I could give you to help you keep your nails out of the danger zone is:

• Always have at least a (5, 7, or 8 free) clear polish on your nails. It'll lessen the appearance of peeling so it'll help you not have things to pick/bite. It'll also make them feel stronger. Color is a good option as well, can help you not want to mess up your hard work. DON'T use hardeners/strengtheners.
  
  
• Buy a small tin/tube of good hand lotion and some cuticle oil (with or solely comprised of jojoba oil). Always have it on you. If you feel the urge to bite/pick (or just randomly), slather product on yourself. I probably went through a 3 oz tube my first week off the nails. It tastes nasty, it's greasy/slippery feeling so you can't get a hold of the skin/nails, and it will help heal your nails both by protecting them and from application improving bloodflow and circulation to the matrix (for new growth).
  
  
• Try a new compulsive habit if hand massaging pounds of product into your hands isn't helping. I click my Note 8 stylus like crazy, reorganize my polish collection, or do adult coloring books when I'm not typing. Try not to have idle hands. Try a rubber band on the wrist and carry around a pocket picture of gorgeous long nails in perfect health and WANT IT. (yeah, I know it's not that easy but it might help!)
  
  
• Make sure you're protecting your recovering nails from other things that want to ruin them. Wear gloves when you do the dishes and invest in sulfate-free hand soap for the bathroom.
  Try not to use your nails as tools (like for cans, stabbing packaging, etc)
  
  
• When caring for your nails, use a glass file (Mont Bleu) to shape them because it seals the edges against moisture and helps the layers seal and stick together to lessen peeling.
  
  
• If you can manage it, don't actually let your nails grow to the point of breakage and keep them at or slightly (like 1 mm) below the end of your finger. Work on perfecting a nail care routine and trying to better your habits for a month or two before trying to grow them out a bit. It will still probably be peely if you go full nude but if you keep them trim, short, and hydrated you're less likely to have breaks which can make you feel defeated and like nothing is helping which might make you turn to either biting again or ruining everything with gimmick 'get rich quick' products like hardeners.
  
  
• When you do/can start growing them out again, it's really important to maintain the routine because a hydrated nail is MUCH more flexible and resilient than a dry one so you can reduce breaks and reduce the severity of breaks (like maybe just a lifty tear you can patch)

DON'T GO NEAR ILNP!!! Not if you want to build your collection up without spending a lot since their polishes are mainly $10 each...I may spend too much money on them because thy're gorgeous holos.


Howver if you want to get into gels for cheaps definitely get one of those Sally Hansen starter sets that comes with the lights they're around $20-30 depending on where you find them, This is a cheap one with the color "Wine Not?" so even fi you dislike the color you'll have base and top coat and the light to begin playing with it, they have others but as you can see the other colors are more expensive for no reason you get the same things only a different color. You may be able to find these in a place like Wal-Mart or Sally Beauty for cheaper.


As for acrylics never done them and never likes them so not any help there, but for tools here are some links to some good ones that are cheap. They may take a little ot ship but I will forego spending a ton for shipping in favor of having more to spend on stuff. Here's a cuticle set, I've got this and it works nice. And here is some dotting tools and little gems, there are definitely good review on these and I've ordered other supplies from this seller before. So if you want to branch out from one colors and do little splashes of designs these work.


You may also look into nail vinyls for doing patterns and such first then invest in some brushes for free hand designs later on since it gets easier then. For now get going on things and enjoy painting again, hope some of this rambling of suggestions helped!

I just picked up this old Lowe & Campbell referee's watch. Other than the crystal being really scratched up, it was in great shape, and it kind of worked.

I worked on it for a while yesterday. It just had a very simple problem, which was lucky. Not sure exactly what the movement is, but it looks a lot like most other dollar pocket watch movements - not a lot of screws and a lot of rivets. They weren't made to be taken apart.

I've seen these watches branded different things, but they all look the same.

The mechanics are pretty simple. It has a crown used to wind the watch and set the one (minute) hand, and a sliding lever at the 10-11 o'clock position that stops and starts the watch.

For basketball, it's broken up into two 20-minute halves, just like NCAA basketball today. Note that there's no other timing for basketball. There was no shot clock back then.

Football is broken up into 4 15-minute quarters with a red 'warning' bar for the two minute warning. Interesting that it startes at 5 min. left. I don't know much about old football rules. Did it used to be a 5-minute warning?

Regardless, the watch works as well as one could expect an inexpensive vintage watch to work.

A couple of the scratches were pretty deep. I didn't think I could get them out, but I did. If you repair and restore a lot of vintage watches, those nail polishing blocks are a must to have around. I go through them. I buy them in boxes of 10 at a time.

Basically, you start with the #1 grit, which is the coarsest, and work your way up to four. You have to buff pretty fast and constantly wipe the old acrylic dust away.

Anyway, I just thought it was an interesting piece, and it combines my love of sports with my love of watches. Double whammy!

I own and love this comb and this looks very similar to a fantastic comb one of my coworkers uses.

For slickers, Les Poochs makes some pretty awesome ones - their red one is amazing at dematting! Unfortunately they're also really expensive! If you don't mind spending, the Pro Brush (F/F) would be the way to go. If you're cheap like me, this has very good reviews and should perform acceptably as well. I personally like flexible slickers, so I recommend them.

Truthfully I seldom use undercoat rakes. A high velocity blow dryer (k9 brand is good - don't bathe at home without a blower, it's a good investment) serves the purpose for me both with my own dog and with the dogs at work. Still, if you want an undercoat rake, stay away from things that have blades - Furminators, Furminator knock-offs, Mars Coat Kings, coat king knock offs. There's a time and place for those but I would not personally use them on a spitz of any breed. Something like this will do. I also like shedding combs though I haven't found one without a handle yet.

Additional stuff: you need a good pair of nail clippers, and I also recommend spray like The Stuff or Ice on Ice to keep things feeling nice and fresh.

Well, you can start by taking a Biotin supplement or prenatal vitamins. Those will help speed up the growth of your natural nails. You'll also want to get a strengthening polish of some sort. OPI Nail Envy is popular, but I'm not sure what's available where you live. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Hand cream as often as possible. Apply cuticle oil at least once or twice a day. There are tons out there. File your nails gently, and if they're not too sensitive, buff the surface to even it out. Don't over buff it. It shouldn't hurt. After your nail surfaces are stronger and less sensitive, you might want to get a cuticle remover gel and some orange wood sticks. Apply the cuticle remover, let it sit for a minute, and then use the orange wood to gently push back any of the stuff growing up your nails. Wash your hands after using the cuticle remover, if left on too long it could burn your skin. Moisturize.

I linked some products on amazon. Just because I linked specific products doesn't mean that's what you have to use. It might take a little while to figure out the routine that works best for you, but you can do it.

Favorite memory from the year: Going back to DDO it may seem silly to be happy about going back to a game, but I had a lot of friends there, and the welcome back I got when I went back made me feel welcome and missed and maybe a little bit awesome.

Past halloween: When my mom would dress up for halloween. There was one year her and I were both gypsies. She'd bought the skirts, but we had the shirts, and she had the scarves and spangly jewelry and i was loaded with clicking and bright necklaces as bracelets etc. It was awesome. It was the only year we dressed the same.

I am looking forward to hitting the halfway mark of my weight loss. 2 more lbs to go! then I'll have lost 50 and have 50 more to go! I will probably dance that week! XD

Crystal nail files

I just wanted to add 1 more tip - I also have nails that tear and crack if I just apply polish, but what I've found works well for me, as an amateur-at-best nailpolisher, my routine is:

0. After removing old polish and washing nails in warm water then drying them, I use one of these buffer blocks and make sure to do it well. I think it has a big effect on my nails not chipping and it's much gentler than an emery board.

   Yes this is gonna take a loooooooooooooong time, but after a week I have very few chips, my nails are able to grow a little, and I am excited to put a new coat on rather than just desperate to get the current one off. Maybe it sounds like too many coats, I am not a nail polish scientist, this is just the process I developed independently that works for me.
   
   And that said, now I feel totally justified in going and buying some new polish today as my meager collection has yet to require a DIY storage cart!

Cuticle cream helps A LOT. It keeps your cuticles from getting dried out and gross, which can be a big problem when you do your nails a lot (nail polish remover dries them out super bad). I use Burt's Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream and love it! it works well and smells good too :)

Also try to use non-acetone nail polish remover rather than acetone as much as possible. Sometimes its hard to avoid (like with glitter) but acetone is much harder on your nails/cuticles. I like to keep a big bottle of non-acetone remover which I use the majority of the time and a small bottle of acetone for especially tough manicures ;)


As for your actual nails, invest in a glass nail file like this. It will help prevent your nails from splitting or breaking. Filing in one direction helps with this as well.

A couple years ago for Christmas my boyfriend got me a gel polish kit. He got me this polish kit, this UV lamp, and some UV damage protecting gloves. I can't speak for anything else since I haven't used other products, but I really like using it! My biggest gripe is that the gel polishes in my kit are not very opaque. It takes many many coats of polish before it starts looking like a solid color. Also, the colors that are shown on the caps are not really accurate to how they come out on my nails, which can be a bummer. One time I wanted cherry red nails and they came out more pink. I'd like to eventually invest in some other brands of polishes to see if I get better results. The gloves are pretty nice so I'd recommend those if you are concerned about UV damage on your hands. As far as actual UV lamps goes, I don't see how there could be too much difference between them, unless you got a tiny one-nail-at-a-time lamp vs a full sized one. Overall I think it's been worth having the kit. I don't use it very often, but still really enjoy it when I have the time!

I was a CHRONIC nail biter. Like you would puke at the site of my nails. I bit them past the quick and they bled quite often. I quit in Jan of 2010 and while my nails still aren't super strong, they are WAY stronger than they were when I was shredding them to bits. I would recommend you use this Sally Hansen nail oil, it has Vitamin E in it which is great for strengthening your nails and the product itself is also inexpensive. If you want to spend a little more, you can buy Nailtique, which I hear works wonders though I never used it at $30 a bottle. I would also recommend some good old fashion patience in letting them grow out. Good luck!

I've always had this problem. Try taking some supplements. There are a few hair/skin/nails supplements that can help, but I've found a few things that really help.

1. Don't pick off your polish. This was my biggest problem. I love doing it, especially with glitters, and this ruins the top layer of your nails.
   
   
2. Buy a strengthening base coat. I've used several of them. Out of all of the one's I've tried OPI Nail Envy seems be the best for my nails. If you ever skip polish, a few coats of this will help seal the flakes and harden the nail so it doesn't break off as quickly. you know what works really well?

in most stores beauty sections they sell a nail cutter with the blades on the side, like a tiny pair of scissors but at just the right angle to clip away ingrown nails. works perfect and it was my most prized tool for a few years lol.

As someone who bit their nails for ~24 yrs I now agree with this entirely. Glass files are great. Clip and file after you shower, it softens your nails. takes some time to get better at it but the long smooth/curved strokes are key.

EDIT: good nail clippers are helpful. They are sharper and leave a cleaner cut. You might say why would I spend so much on clippers I can get them for $1. Because you are trying to do a better job taking care of yourself that's why.

1. Do you pick at them? Roll your index fingers over them? Bit/Chew on them? Maybe there's a habit you need to correct.

   I cut large stacks of paper at work and it took me ages to figure out the paper dust was demolishing my skin. Not only that but hardwater and cheap soap weren't helping either.
   
   Now I moisturize every time after washing my hands, take fish oil tablets, and make sure I'm getting enough calcium. Diet makes a difference. :)
   
   They mostly look dried out and as /u/Rootman points out below a cuticle cutter will help you maintain them. If your hangnails get too long they will constantly tug and tear at the base of your cuticles and they'll never get a chance to properly heal. Good luck!

Omg the fragile skin is so horrible... I had to stop cutting my nails with a standard clipper trimmer and had to start filing (very carefully at first) with glass files so there's no scraggly or sharp ends as my skin slices easily. I used to draw blood regularly trying to pick up small fiddly things, even pills! I still bump into furniture and find blood on my legs or arms though.

I also seem to have fewer nail breaks since keeping with the filing. A gentle pressure and a good glass file where the filing grit is etched into the glass is great! I also have an older metal file that I find is best for finishing, but I can't find more of that wave surface type. It made the free edge shiny smooth and impossible to catch on things.

Once I get to my PC, I'll edit this once I get links for the glass files I use and see if I can find info on the metal file.

Somtimes you just know it's gonna fly off so aim at the trash can, or put your hand near a plastic bag to catch it.
For toenails, it helps if you have a tiled bathroom floor. Then you can cut them before you clean the bathroom.

I love it. Since I've started using it, I've noticed my nails are thicker and are growing at a great rate! I use Sally Hansen Vitamin E Nail and Cuticle Oil. I adore it! And it lasts forever!

OK! Short lesson time :D First thing to know is that the cuticle isn't what you think it is! Read this blog entry :)
Ok, now that you know what cuticles actually are, first step is to moisturize those mofos! Even if you just rub in lotion when you put lotion on your hands, they NEED moisture. Preferably use a cuticle balm or oil, and don't forget to apply it to your nails as well!

Next, you wanna remove your cuticles, put on a cuticle remover and push them with a cuticle stick and you can wipe them off with a tissue. This is important because polish doesn't stick to the cuticle. Also, though you aren't supposed to trim the eponychium, I still do because honestly, mine are completely unruly. If you trim them do as little as possible.

I agree with other people saying that you need to keep a pair of nail clippers with you at all times. Running my fingers along my cuticle, if I feel any rough or sharp pieces sticking up, I will just clip it off, and there is not even anything left to bite and rip up! I started doing that when I started my nursing career, because open wounds on your fingers are very dangerous if you're around nasty germs all day. This nail clipper has truly saved my fingers. I highly encourage you hop on amazon right now and buy 2 or 3! It folds completely flat and also has a spot where it can be attached to a keyring. Also, stimulants can exacerbate any anxiety you may have. That means that drinking coffee or any other sources of caffeine can make your cuticle biting worse, so be cognizant of what makes you bite and try to reduce it. If necessary, see a psychiatrist and try to control any anxiety you may have. This was also part of what helped me stop! My cuticles look great, but just a year ago they looked just like yours! Good luck and I know you can do it!

Honestly your nails don't look bad! Get a good nail file (a lot of people swear by glass nail files, although I personally like a two-way metal file). Keep it with you as much as you can! Throw it into your purse, keep it in your car, whatever. Part of maintaining my nail shape is being able to fix small breaks and cracks before they cause serious damage. Decide what shape you want (check out this visual guide if you're stumped). Round, oval, and squoval are the strongest nail shapes, so I'd start with out of those three. It looks like your nail shape is naturally "round", so stick with that to begin with. Growing your nails out a little more will make your fingers look longer, but when you work with your hands its hard to do.

If you have really thick nails this can be helpful, but I think a better bit of advice is to spend a few bucks on some really good clippers like the ones made by Seki Edge. They are under $20, last forever, and work way batter than generic clippers. And don't share them with anyone...good way to get nail fungus.

Rather than filing the surface you might try buffing it. Here is what most buffing blocks look like, you can usually find them in any drugstore for $2 or less. They are even numbered with the order to use each side, and you don't have to use them all. When I buff my nails I only use the coarsest side (Side 1). The only issue with these are that they are kind of large and it is sometimes hard to get a good buff on small nails like toe nails. Usually filing the surface of a nail is a no no, because if you file to deeply you can get down to the nail bed, which can cause infection (especially bad if you already suspect a possible fungus).

I apologize that I don't know any anti-fungals, the only knowledge I have of that is when my room mate had a toe fungus from a salon and had to use a prescription treatment. It worked, I think she had to use it for 30 days straight. Good luck, I hope there's something easier than that available to you!

I carry this Victorinox set. They fold nice and flat, hang well on your key ring, do a great job of cutting and filing, and they last for years. I've had mine for four years this summer, and I've heard others say they've lasted for 20+.

I use these for my greyhound who has pretty thick claws, they're really sturdy and well-made. I think the key is to keep them super sharp though, then they don't put as much pressure on the nail and cut through much easier.

These are super tiny and work well.

The two brands I've seen recommended most are Cheeky (like these) and Czech Republic Nail Files (like these). Oh, and Nail Tek isn't quite as popular but I've seen good things about their files, too!

Expensive for nail clippers but they are good quality and still cut as well as they did when I first ordered them.

Do you still have a base and a top coat? They're both really important to reduce staining and chipping, and to increase longevity of your manicure.

What's your budget like? Base your purchases off of how much you're willing to spend, and how big you want to go. I'm a college student, but I have no real bills and nails are my only money-consuming hobby, so I get mid to high tier polish.

Dotting tools, a cuticle pusher, and a buffing block are my top three supplies, aside from acetone, cotton balls and polish.

A paper towel works really well for this. Then rub on your jeans. No joke. I can get a glass finish on abs/pla/pet with this method.

I've never felt like my own advice could be more applicable. I have a minor obsession with keeping my nails clipped. I've carried a pair of nail clippers on me every day for a little over the past 6 years and have gone through a few pairs. I would say I trim my nails at least a bit every day.

First pair was the standard cheapo ones you would get at the counter at CVS. I think these either broke or were lost. Fun fact, with a simple pair of nail clippers you can cut, strip, unscrew and reattach the starter cable of a '92 GTI.

The next pair was a similar OTC one, except this time with a rubberized "sport grip". I never used these during sports. These lasted me a while and eventually met their demise when I had to use them as a tool and took a big chunk out of the cutting edge.

After that I got a pair of the Tweezerman ones some other people had mentioned here. I got these last April and they died on me this July. I really liked the cutting edge on these, but the post part failed. If you look at it like a rivet, the "edge" part of the rivet that keeps the post from pulling through wore away until it did eventually pull through.

It was at this point that I figured it was time to step up my game and look for some BIFL clippers. I looked around and ended up settling on the Seki Edge. Holy crap these things are awesome. I was genuinely scared of them the first time I used them because I thought I would accidentally take a chunk out of my finger. The design of the lever part is so solid they are in a totally different class.

Of course after those showed up I figured out I was able to repair the Tweezerman ones by swapping the post from pair #2. They ended up being WAY better than stock and are now my daily driver which I use just to trim. I leave the Seki at home for when I'm doing a full blown cut.

And that is more than I ever thought I would type about nail clippers...

Nail edge bothers the crap out of me. If they're not smooth, my mind just focuses on that and drives me nuts. I've bought a really nice nail clipper that trims nails smoothly without any issues. I never do it with wet fingernails as they always get a poor edge. :(
