I have:

Retro Bit Retro Duo v2

This is the first clone I ever got, back in 2009. The other widely available options at the time were the Yobo FC Twin and the Yobo FC 3 Plus. I chose the Retro Duo due to it's high compatibility on both the NES and SNES side. It was one of the few NES clones that could run the NES Powerpak, and it was one of the first SNES clones that could run Super Mario RPG. The FC 3 Plus could also apparently run Super Mario RPG, but it had terrible proprietary controllers that used the Sega 6-button layout, making SNES and NES controls backwards. The Retro Duo has S-video and composite output, though the picture is a bit darker than a real SNES. The controllers are fine, but like the console, they're made with a slick "mirror" plastic that smudges easily. Plays NTSC games only.

Retro-Bit Retro Duo Portable v2.0

Got this one in 2016. I thought the idea of a portable SNES was neat. I chose this one over the Hyperkin Supaboy and the atrocious Yobo FC Twin Go because I thought it had the best form factor. Plus it included a NOAC NES cart adapter, so that was a plus. Also included a plugin controller port and composite output cord. Screen is okay, about on par with composite video. Plays NTSC games only.

Super Players Entertainment System

Got this one in 2017. It's design is based off of the Super Famicom Jr. or SNES mini, like a lot of SNES clones (poor Lance Barr never sees a dime). The controllers it comes with are garbage. The consoles itself is really good. S-Video and composite output. Also had a region switch, so it can play both NTSC and PAL games. Strangely, it displays PAL games in black and white. I don't know if this issue is with all of these units or just mine. I'd understand if it was connected to a consumer TV, but I have it hooked up to a Sony PVM-20L5, which plays PAL consoles just fine. Fun little fact, this particular brand of clone has been around for years, and for a time was inexplicably branded with an Indiana Pacers logo. I find this funny because I'm from Indiana.

Pound Challenger

Got this one in 2018. First HDMI Chinese clone I've got. I wrote the first review for it on Amazon, and included a video displaying the input lag and video artifacts it displays over HDMI. So check out that review for more details. Long story short, it's a decent clone. Composite and HDMI output. Also has a region switch, so it can play NTSC and PAL games.

Argo Super 16 Bit

This is my most recent clone, and also my favorite. Why? Because it's one of the first SNES clones ever made. There's very little information about it online and it's almost a lost piece of gaming history. It's the European release of a Super Genius SNES clone released in 1994. This same clone was also released in Brazil as the Chips do Brasil Super Prosystem 16 before Playtronic officially released the SNES down there. Shout out to u/sagosen for hooking me up with one all the way from Norway.

It's got a solid build quality and some decent turbo controllers. Composite and RF output. Region switch, so it can play both NTSC and PAL games. PAL games display fine, but NTSC games are in black and white (the opposite of the above mentioned Super Players issue). Runs everything fine except for S-DD1 chip and SA1 chip games (probably due to the console lacking a CIC chip). S-DD1 games run, but the graphics are scrambled. SA1 games just display a black screen and don't run at all. It's worth noting that S-DD1 and SA1 ROM files run fine on the console when running on an SD2SNES.

And speaking of backup devices. I've got the SD2SNES, SD2SNES Pro, Super Powerpak, Super UFO Pro 8 (SD version), and Game Doctor SF7 (shout out to u/MuricaPersonified for hooking me up with that one). They all work fine on all of the SNES clones I have. Though admittedly, it's not practical to use a Game Doctor with the Retro Duo Portable. And again, like I said before, all of these clones use basically the same hardware and have the Contra 3 color palette issue.

So yeah, I hope I elaborated enough for you. I've also got 5 legitimate SNES/SFC consoles, as well as the Analogue Super NT, but those are different beasts all together.

You can get her a DS for fairly reasonable prices and Mario Kart DS for okay prices and its a pretty decent Mario Kart, also the 3DS is backwards compatible with DS games so if you maybe doubled the cost you could get hold of a 3DS and Mariokart DS and later on get Mario Kart 7 which is considered one of the best.

The Snes and N64 versions are a great blast, particularly in multiplayer so if you want to share the experience these are probably the best versions to get.

N64's are built like brick poop houses, the important thing to remember is that the controllers would crap out a long time before the console so check the 3d stick doesn't crunch when moved and it centers when untouched, theres sometimes issues with corrosion on the cart slot and power supplies failing but generally as long as you can see the thing running before you buy you should be alright. Snes is also a very robust console, the important things to check is for corrosion on the cartridge slot and once again controllers, check the D-Pad isn't loose and the shoulder buttons feel solid but not overly tight, 3rd party joypads are easy to find and work just fine but quality can sometimes be an issue, the SNES power block tends to outlast the consoles but check for damaged wires and kinks but replacements are cheap. AV cables for Snes and N64 can be found on amazon or ebay for dirt cheap prices so if you find a console missing some cables you can take a chance if its cheap.

You could try getting a Wii and the GameCube version, although I find that Double Dash is not such a great Mario Kart in my opinion but it is fun. As long as the Wii you're buying has the gamecube controller ports (Amazon, Ebay, and you'll find cheap used official controllers and my local Gamestop even stocks compatible controllers so you shouldn't be unable to find gamecube controllers) it will play Gamecube games but if you get one of the later versions you won't have backwards compatibility, check something like craigs list and you might find some kind of a bargin, bonus about going this way is you also have access to Mario Kart Wii and several other AAA Nintendo games too boot Just noticed you already seem to own a Wii so forget that part.

Be aware that you can get 3rd party unofficial consoles, results vary but the stuff thats been coming out in recent years does a reasonable job playing most popular games without much if any issues. It would take a trained eye to spot the differences between popular games played on a Snes or say a Retron more Retron info if your keen. Get official joypads or 3rd party recreations as everyone hates the bundled joypads. Big positive about going this way is you can also get her Mario Bros ( nes game is very cheap because its extremely common, pay more than a couple dollars for it and you're a fool) Depending on what you find in your area you might find this is the better option purely for costs.

Check goodwill stores if they don't carry electronics ask them if they know who does. I wish there was something like this in my hometown in Ireland or any kind of pawn shop or second hand store. In this day and age everyone has internet access so prices can sometimes seem stupidly high because people just look at "Buy it Now" prices on ebay forgetting that the actual completed listings that sold is what determines a consoles price and demand, check the completed listings on ebay and narrow the range to say 50 miles from your location, sometimes you'll see failed to sell consoles with 2-3 bids because unreasonable sellers think retro = cash, look for consoles that sold on their bid prices and that should give you a guide about how much a console costs. Always check the seller on Amazon and Ebay, you don't want any nasty surprises and try to stick with sellers who appear to sell consoles because if they say its working and have a good rating then its probably a fully working console. //wall of text.

Gimme some Tech Daddi!

If I had to pick, I have this on my wishlist because I miss all my old games. I still have my SNES from when I was younger but it doesn't work anymore. I got it for Christmas so every time it starts to get even a little chilly I want to curl up in a blanket and play so badly and it's killing me that I can't. Super mario world is my favorite game and I have a lot of happy memories attached to it, mainly being that it was the only time during my entire childhood I ever got along with my sister. We hated each other growing up, still don't really get along, but super mario world always tickles me and makes me happy because I had such a great time with it. I wanna be able to feel like a kid, and smile. Not a lot makes me happy but being able to play my old games this winter would. Plus it would be fun to be able to play with my son.

Sorry that sounds so mushy/sentimental, haha.

Ninja Gaiden is a great game but SUPER hard to beat. It's classic NES where you memorize where each baddie comes from because it is always the same. But as you go and reach a new level, you have to begin memorizing again but die too soon. So much trial and error. Contra is super fun if you use the Konami code. Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start during the opening screen. Then you get thirty lives and two continues which also give you 30 more lives. But playing it without the code is pretty rough. Doing the code with a friend and not having to worry about random deaths is the best. One of the best NES games ever in my opinion.

Some games that I absolutely love: Mario 3, Jaws, Life Force, Mega Man 2 (it's the best one in the series), Zelda, Metroid, Bionic Commando, and Gunsmoke.

Side bar: If your NES acts up and gets sick of playing games you can replace the 72-pin connector inside the toaster but it is a pain. Also, don't blow on your games; the moisture in your breath only aids in oxidizing the contacts. Nail polish remover/rubbing alcohol on a q-tip is the way to go. Nevertheless, I got sick of fixing my system (it is VERY rarely the cartridge that is the problem) so I bought this giant piece of shit.

It works perfectly. I was shocked and still am. And the controllers are actually legit.

Thats what I got for now. Love your youTube vids. Keep it up.

Deep clean your games.

To do this I would recommend a deep clean. These games have 25+ years of dust build up and corrosion from people blowing in them. And simply dusting it out might not be enough.

To deep clean the games you will need to open them up this can be accomplished with a 3.8 security bit screwdriver. You can get those here from amazon for a few bucks. After it’s opened gently remove the chip and wipe out the inside of the cart with some isopropyl alcohol to remove any dust inside and set it aside. Then move to the game contacts these are the gold slips at the bottom of the game. Dip a q-tip in the isopropyl alcohol and firmly scrub the contacts until the q-tip stops getting a dark color. Use as many q-tips as you need.

After that there should still be some alcohol on the contacts. Use a pencil eraser on the contacts and firmly rub off any hunk that might have built up. I found the pink rectangular ones work best.
Next take a magic eraser and buff out the last of anything remaining on the contacts. Do this to both sides and then take a paper towel and some alcohol and gently rub off any dust or eraser markings left behind. Let everything dry for a minute or so and the put the game back together.

If doing that doesn’t solve the issue it’s a problem with the 72 pin connector. Turn the NES upside down and use a Phillips head screw driver to remove the 6 screws on the bottom so you can lift the top off. After that remove the silver heat shield there are 2 screws on the left 2 at the back and 3 or 4 on the right side. Once that’s off blast the insides with compressed air to get all the dust out that has built up. After a good dusting remove the tray and 72 pin connector there are 3 screws on either side with the middle screw being longer then all the other screws. Side the tray foreword and up to remove them pull the 72 pin connector off the back.

You can bend the pins back up or boil it to clean it if you don’t want to buy a new one or really care about having all Nintendo parts ( if so let me know and I’ll explain how to do that as well), but I personally usually just replace it at this point. If you don’t really plan on using your NES very often you can get a basic 72 pin connector on amazon for $10.00. If you play it often you might look into upgrading to a Blinking Light Win it’s more expensive but it’s designed so you don’t push down on the game and loosen the pins so it should last much longer and it will circumvent the region lock chip. Personally I love mine.

I think that’s everything. Let me know if you need to know anything else. Good luck with the repairs

God damn you Forbes and your fucking money schemes. Here's the text from the article.

"Overnight, Nintendo update the official SNES Classic Edition console's webpage with links to six major retailers.

The website has changed to say "Pre-order now from these retailers" and includes links to Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Target, Toys R Us and Walmart.

Credit: Nintendo
Get ready to pre-order the SNES Classic Edition.

What time each of these different retailers goes live is an open question at this point, but I'd urge gamers to pay careful attention today as these roll out. There's no doubt in my mind that they're going to go quickly.

Best Buy's pre-orders went live briefly last night, and it's unclear if they've already sold out entirely or if the retailer will open pre-orders up again today.

Regardless, pre-orders will be going up in the very, very near future so keep your eyes open.

Meanwhile, as of this writing the links at the SNES website go to each retailers' home page rather than a store landing page. Here are the actual landing pages for each site except Toys R Us:

Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0721GGGS9)

Walmart (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Super-Nintendo-Entertainment-System-Classic-Edition/55791858)

Target (https://www.target.com/p/snes-classic-edition/-/A-52826093)

GameStop (http://www.gamestop.com/collection/snes-classic)

Toys R Us (?)

That is a hardware clone, and a poor one at that(made by ATGames). It may be officially licensed by Sega, but doesn't mean it doesn't suck. If you are intent on getting a hardware clone get a Retro-Bit Super Retro Trio. It is currently selling for $55 and plays NES, SNES, and Genesis games it is also capable of playing GBA games with an adapter.

You can get an everdrive or something similar to allow saves states, but if you are looking for save states in general you are probably best off buying a Retron 5.

u/THE_NEWEST_3DS · 6 pointsr/3DS

Those cheap Chinese ones are terrible. The two I bought were barely being held together by the dozen screws in it. Cyber gadget makes a pretty decent grip, but it's quite a bit more expensive. I find that it is much more comfortable than the cheaper versions and has some game storage in the back as well. Amazon

As far as cases... If you want a case to hold the 3ds with the grip installed, the NES classic case is awesome. Just trim out the thin strip of foam in the middle and the gripped console drops right in. Even has room for a charger too! Amazon

Hope that helps!

My friend did the same thing. He was getting a divorce and clearing out his house and posted on FB free NES, few games, 2 NES advantage controllers (one in the original box never used and still in the plastic) and multiple boxes from previous games he no longer had. The only thing missing was the power supply. I was super stoked and ordered one online. Plugged that baby in and got the blinking red light. I cleaned the games, blow the fuck out of them, stuffed one on top of the other and I could only get Contra to work briefly and it was all pixelated and crappy display. My heart was broken and I sadly packed it all up and put it in my basement.

6 months go buy or so and I find a store in my mall that repairs and sales retro games. He was like here replace this connection component on the motherboard and you will have a new system, cost $15. Bought it and swapped it out and I was back to a new system!!!

So I would suggest doing the same and always clean the cartridges with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol to remove any oxidation.

This one will fix the actual design issue and you may never have to swap out the 72 pin connector again.

https://www.arcadeworks.net/blw

This is the original replacement, it is cheaper, but over time you could experience the same issue where the pins stretch and don’t make contact.

https://www.amazon.com/Connector-Nintendo-System-Bulk-Packaging-entertainment/dp/B002DLOM6C/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?crid=OHU19SUAITHR&keywords=nes+72+pin+connector+replacement&qid=1551190926&s=gateway&sprefix=nes+72+&sr=8-4

And here’s a cleaning kit that does well.

https://www.amazon.com/1UPcard-Video-Cartridge-Cleaning-Nintendo-NES/dp/B00S7HYEKK/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?crid=ET82QFTGL1X4&keywords=1up+card&qid=1551191045&s=gateway&sprefix=1up+&sr=8-1

Oh and retro gaming can and will become an addiction. I now own Atari 2600, NES, SNES, N64, Gameboy (orig) a ton of games and peripherals for the systems. And wait when you find home brew games and there is a company that made a brand new game and I sponsored on Kickstarter and will get the game this year.

Good luck! And have fun!

Pi with a good wireless NES controller works great. If you can find an NES Classic (they are gonna be released again this year) you can get a wireless controller that is very close to an NES controller, of an extension cord for the included controller (you will need one, the cords are VERY short).

If you want to got he cartridge route, you can get an NES and the carts, and there are 3rd party NES systems too, but the carts might be hard to find.

I'd go with the NES classic along with a wireless controller or the extension cord. It looks like an (small) NES and works great. I have one with both an extension cord for the original controller and a wireless controller, and have had no issues.

Link to the NES controller I have for my NES Classic: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M34DLXD/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Link to the NES controller extension cord I have:

I think both work great!

My PS / PS2 emulation knowledge is non existent (never played anything on those machines really) but I've been emulating MAME, NES, SNES, Sega Genesis and N64 for years. It doesn't take much power to emulate those systems.

One easy / cheap way to do those things seems to be buying one of those new NES / SNES classic systems.

I picked up the NES last week, and then found out that the two systems have the exact same hardware and it's super easy to put extra games and even games from other systems on them. I've got my NES setup to play NES, SNES, Gameboy Advance and Sega Genesis games. It took me maybe 30 minutes to do that. (I'd recommend the SNES if you wanted to do that, it comes with 2 controllers vs the NES having only 1 and a 2 button one at that which means you'd need something with more buttons if you wanted to emulate other systems)

u/ssaltmine · 1 pointr/raspberry_pi

> then what happens when I do want to use the GPIOs?

I guess it depends on whether there is any support for them. The EmulationStation software is just an interface to run different independently programmed emulators, so it is made independently from the Raspberry Pi.

The GPIOs first and foremost are controlled by the Linux kernel, by special modules programmed by the Raspbery Pi developers and included in Raspbian. I'm not sure if the EmulationStation software even has access to those GPIOs. If there is no code to interact with the GPIOs then you wouldn't be able to use them inside EmulationStation.

As far as I can tell, EmulationStation should be able to run in Linux, Windows, Mac, and basically anywhere where the C++ compiler and libraries are available. So it shouldn't depend on the Raspberry Pi hardware at all.

USB controllers and Joysticks are handled also by the Linux kernel, through kernel modules (USB human input devices, HID). So, yes, if you would like to build your own USB controller, you would need to see how they do it at that hardware level in the Linux kernel. I guess it would be just a case of copying a bunch of code, and adjusting it to your particular hand made device. But yes, it does sound too complicated to do, especially hunting the exact piece of code, inside the Linux kernel that provides the support for such USB devices.

Your best bet, I guess, is finding a USB controller that imitates the appearance of the DS lite, while not being an actual refurbished DS. Sort of like those USB Nintendo controllers. https://www.amazon.com/USB-Classic-Controllers-PlayStation-HyperSpin/dp/B07491YH2R/

Just throwing an idea out here, but if you haven't heard of the Retron you might be interested. Pretty decent 3rd party console that combines the SNES, NES, and Sega.

http://www.amazon.com/Hyperkin-Retron-System-GENESIS-Nintendo-Entertainment/dp/B003O3EFY2

It's got pretty good reviews so I'm thinking of buying one myself soon.

You don't have to mash F5 if you're hoping to find it online. Here are the things I did that allowed me to get one pre-ordered:

  • Bookmarks - In my browser, I added 3 bookmarks leading directly to the product pages on Walmart.com, BestBuy.com and Amazon.com. Periodically, I'll check these links just in case I get lucky.
  • Accounts - At each of those three retailers, I made sure my account was updated, accessible and had at least one current payment method ready to go. If I didn't have an account, I created one.
  • Saved passwords - I use Chrome to save all my login passwords on my personal computers and the one I use at work. This allows me to log in (or stay logged in) for even faster access once the pre-order goes live.
  • In stock alerts - I signed up over at NowInStock.net to get a notification via email for when the Classic SNES is available at any of the known retailers. As another measure, I also signed up for the in-stock alerts at the retailers themselves.
  • Check Reddit - Periodically, I do a search for "classic snes" on reddit to see if someone might have reported a known pre-order launch date/time.

When the Walmart pre-order came online, I got emails from Walmart and NowInStock at exactly 8:30pm (PST) when the pre-order launched and at about 8:45pm, I opened my computer, clicked on the Walmart bookmark and since I was already logged in, I added the item to my cart and ordered it with two clicks.

Ideally, you just want to be as ready as you can before the pre-order goes live. The more time you spend logging into an account and/or typing in shipping & billing addresses and credit card numbers, the more chances you have of screwing something up or missing out entirely because the item sold out too fast or the site crashed.
u/Deranged40 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

For me, I have no interest in playing retro games unless I have the retro controller. A newer USB-counterpart such as this off-brand SNES controller suffices. But for me, the old games are just as much about the old controllers.

Then you've got dedicated emulator systems such as this SNES/NES/Genesis combo which is really neat. And there's another one by a more popular brand that I can't think of right off hand that emulates like 5 systems. With slots for each system's cartridge as well as controllers.

u/ZoopZeZoop · 2 pointsr/nintendo

Pre-ordered on Amazon for free shipping and $5 pantry credit!

Edit: Canceled and ordered a couple of $15 wireless controllers. I can always re-order the cords later, but I think the wireless will be better for us. When I first got the Wavebird controller for the Gamecube, it was a breath of fresh air. I wanted wireless controllers for my PS1, but I was young then with limited financial resources. My parents made sure I had what I needed, but didn't splurge on too many extras that I didn't need. So, I never purchased the wireless controllers for it. I am happy that wireless controllers are now a regular thing!

So lets talk about this in 2 waves. Let me start by saying I am not a lawyer, however, I have researched this quite a bit, and am pretty involved in other legal things outside of this ;).

Emulators
In the US reverse engineering something without seeing the original is perfectly legal. If someone makes an emulator that runs nintendo games, but does not use any code from the original nintendo device they are not breaking any laws. Patents make this complicated, and also profit laws make it complicated. For instance if you tried to sell an emulator you likely would run into problems, because now you have copied a product (even though its not from the original) simply to make a profit, and now patents etc kick in. There also are parody laws that protect you in place as well, which ironically allow for generic brands of products etc.

To make it clear in the US you can even legally buy emulation machines, which are basically non-licensed emulators that run on the raspberry pi, or something like that and use a cartridge game (they don't take roms). These are 100% legal, and as much as Nintendo hates them, they can do nothing about them.

Here is an example of one of these machines
https://www.amazon.com/8-Bit-Entertainment-System/dp/B0161N7J2G/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1496427251&sr=8-2&keywords=nintendo+emulator

I should point out that all of this does not apply to PSX emulators which use the actual BIOS from the PSX machine. Supposedly these are likely illegal to have.

ROMS

So there is this long debate in the US about Fair Use laws. You can do some googling, as I am not the expert and its "complicated". The long story short is many believe if you buy something on a physical medium, you are legally allowed to copy it as a "backup". However, many don't believe this as well, and its never really been tested when it comes to video games. In short its legally "grey" but it should be considered illegal in my mind.

u/Xybr · 4 pointsr/minines

I ended up getting a Famicom Mini off Amazon for $100. It has 2 built-in tiny controllers. The emulation is the best I've seen. The only downside it the entire UI is in Japanese with no English option, but I was expecting that considering its intended audience.

I still want a NES Classic for its English UI and larger controllers, but I'm mot paying scalper prices and I lack the free time to go line-waiting hoping the 2 people ahead of me don't want what I want.

Until it's more readily available, I can muck my way through Japanese artwork to figure out which one is Super Mario Bros. 3.

If anyone's curious about it, it's available here - https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-classic-mini-family-computer-Japan/dp/B01M1VMFUA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1483411334&sr=8-1&keywords=Famicom+mini.

You're looking for the AC Adapter or "power brick" as the geeks end up calling it. Sorry about that.

That would do it, but it'd be better if you tracked down a used Nintendo brand AC adapter. The name brand stuff just works and fits better than these new things.

The AC adapter is the first thing to check because it's cheap and easy. If that doesn't fix it, then it's internal. Good news is that if you absolutely can't get anyone to fix it, you could probably replace the NES for 40 to 60.

u/LinksDarkArrows · 7 pointsr/smashbros

I want to add to this. There is a precedent for imitation products, but you're right about it being one that specifically encourages piracy.

https://www.amazon.com/Retro-Bit-Retro-Video-System-Silver-Black/dp/B001VDZN3O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1483411924&sr=8-1&keywords=fc+twin

Old game consoles get remade, but you're still expected to have the cartridge to play.

Something else that would concern me is it looks like he may have weaved official Gamecube hardware into his product. I skimmed through the post and he didn't appear to say anything about it, but I feel like if he was trying to make this a thing it would be better for him to manufacture all his own parts. ripping a generic wire out of the console is a little different than using a port Nintendo specifically designed. I don't know. There's such a large battle between what's fair and not that it really is hard to tell these days.

u/rtechie1 · 1 pointr/gamecollecting

Do you want a real SNES or will a knockoff do?

You can get an FC Twin pretty cheap:
http://www.amazon.com/SNES-Video-System-Not-Machine-Specific/dp/B000SC1MUM

Or maybe this if you like Sega controllers:
http://www.amazon.com/Hyperkin-RetroN-System-Charcoal-Nintendo-Entertainment/dp/B003Y5AHPG/ref=sr_1_8?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1344367415&sr=1-8

And this is a new console, you don't have to worry about batteries.

For connection you're probably thinking of video connection, S-Video is as good as anything. If your TV doesn't have S-Video or Composite inputs you'll need s converter of some kind.

Personally, in 2012, I'd use an emulator. PC NES/SNES emulators have better support than hardware or the Wii Virtual Console at this point.

u/Cheech47 · 2 pointsr/buildapc

I don't have a rugrat of my own, but I can see where you're coming from with the power button. :)

I don't know how much you deal with digital cameras or memory cards, but I ended up putting a card reader in the 3.5in slot and that's come in handy a lot. You could just get a pod and have it next to the PC, but it's something to think about.

You'll end up using the crap out of that Harmony One, and just saved yourself more headache than you know. The one big thing with WMC (and something that I haven't devoted a ton of time to) is mapping the Back arrow on the upper left to a button on the remote. If you don't get that, you'll be using a mouse a LOT. Speaking of which, it's not a bad idea (depending on budget) to pick up a wireless keyboard and mouse for the impromptu internet browsing or just general stuff. I have the Adesso keyboard (http://www.adesso.com/en/home/keyboards/91-wkb-3000ub.html) which works fairly well and I get a good range from it (about 15+ meters line-of-sight) It probably doesn't help that I have a 5dbi 2.4GHz antenna spewing 3 meters from the receiver, but it does the job.

I picked up 2 PS3 pads and haven't had issues with them yet. I know there are some USB NES pads (http://www.amazon.com/Retro-Classic-Controller-Nintendo-Entertainment-System/dp/B00281PFQI) so you don't have to screw with adapters.

u/Changeyourtune · 1 pointr/wiiu

If you're solely interested in NES/SNES I recommend this. You could also look into getting flash carts to play most roms on original hardware. Also I recommend playing original hardware on a CRT, because most modern TVs introduce lag when up-scaling NES's 240p up to 1080p, resulting in floaty inaccurate controls. If you see at least a few Wii U games you think are interesting, which I think there are tons, you should buy a Wii U.

u/QuarterSwede · 2 pointsr/RetroPie

I went for a classic 5 pack of NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, and PlayStation USB controllers. It comes with a long USB extension as well. N64 is admittedly a pain to set up in retroarch (works perfectly well in the EmulationStation UI) but once you figure it out it’s fantastic to play with the original feel.

I would look into the clone consoles. I have a Super Retro Trio and it has great compatibility. It also supports flashcarts/everdrive and repos. It is $54 on amazon. I have the original consoles but is nice to save on space and have all three in one box.

u/mattersmuch · 4 pointsr/CasualConversation

If you like platformers or retro/pixel style games I'd recommend you pick one up. Or better yet, grab one of these baddies.. you can definitely find them cheaper than the one I linked here, and there are lots of great NES and SNES games that stand the test of time. I mean emulators are great too, and nostalgia is certainly a factor for me, but old games can provide a cool throwback gaming experience, and offer a sort of window into gaming history.

u/GirlField · 4 pointsr/truezelda

"Remake! Remake! Remake! Remake!" Hey, I get it, Retro is in. But enough with the remakes already! If you want to replay an old game, then do so! There are a lot of options and it seems like all you "remake" kids are completely unaware they exist.

Get an original SNES. Get a SNES clone. Get a handheld SNES clone. Get yourself an emulator like ZSNES or SNES9x, which are available on pretty much every platform you can imagine.

But please, enough with remakes. I want some new original games.

u/JRPGFan · 1 pointr/FinalFantasy

I won (from an in-store contest) a Retro Trio earlier this year. It smells like new electronics but it plays NES, SNES and Genesis games. I bought a real Genesis controller to plug into it and bought Krusty's Super Fun House (Genesis version) to play on it. I bought RC Pro Am too and it works fine with a Genesis controller.

http://www.amazon.com/Retro-Bit-RetroTRIO-Console-System-Nintendo-Entertainment/dp/B00FQDEKM0

My drunk ass is wondering though, why do cheap electronics smell for weeks but a Sony, Nintendo or Microsoft console never smells?

u/felipusrex · 4 pointsr/miniSNES

I bought mine from the weird digital download link.
"Nintendo Digital Downloads/Game Trust Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition" that now points here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0721GGGS9/

I checked from my order page.

And later I got an email that said: "We recently learned that we may miss your delivery promise and apologize for the inconvenience. You will still receive your order of Super NES Classic. "

u/zurratype · 4 pointsr/gaming

You can find that exact same controller cheaper or you can make your own. It is a pretty easy process to make one and you can buy the parts for about 10 bucks. Also, on underground-gamer and bitgamer somebody makes custom ones for pretty good prices. You can get a box that does just 2 nes controllers or 4 controller ports for nes, snes, n64, psx, dreamcast, etc...

edit: although for actually doing this I'd imagine you'd want to just jack the buttons from an nes controller and add them to a mouse.

u/OdinRage02 · 1 pointr/Gameboy

A set like this will get you into pretty much any Nintendo game/console, and some Sega Genesis games as well. 3.8 mm will get you into the Nintendo stuff (NES, SNES, GB, GBC, N64), the 4.5 into Sega stuff, and the tri wing gets you into Gameboy Advance games/systems as well as newer Nintendo consoles ( like the Wii and DS) as well.

u/ser3nitynow · 1 pointr/gamingsuggestions

Well, PS2 can play any PS1 game.

Also, I think there is a super console of sorts for Sega/Nintendo for earlier eras. I haven't ever used one though, so I've no idea how well it works.

Some of the more popular PS1 games have made it to the Playstation Network. They generally work on PS3/4 and the PSP/Vita.

Some games have made it to Steam, and GOG has some as well. I think FFVII, VIII, and IX are on there. Possibly X and 12. I haven't checked.

--edit: For PS1 games on the PS2, you'll need PS1 memory cards. There should be third party cards you can buy. I bought those back in the day since they were larger and cheaper than the official Sony ones.

u/Konman72 · 1 pointr/nintendo

Also Genesis games. I got one of these when I moved so I didn't have to hook up all three again. It works great! Uses the original controllers and everything. From some videos apparently sometimes the sound is a little off but for anyone that just wants a bit more convenience with their old school gaming I definitely recommend it.

EDIT: Also, here is an Amazon link to the same item. A bit cheaper:

Why pay hundreds of dollars to play classics? My brother has one of these and we get a better selection of great classics for a much better price.

u/idownvoteallposts · 1 pointr/retrogaming

Actually I guess they're on Amazon now for about $100. That seems like kind of a lot, but it's better than $250 for a NES mini I guess. Also it looks like they sell the usb plug for $15- $20 but just about any phone charger plug should work. I'm just using one I got from an old phone or tablet, I don't even remember, but it seems like they could have included it if they wanted to.

I'm saving up/waiting impatiently on this Super Nintendo Classic console. It was the only gaming system I had as a kid other than a very old and frustrating Atari, so lots of fond memories. I spent hours and hours beating Super Mario over and over again. I'd love to have the reinvented classic version, and I hope it's awesome.

Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis When I was dead broke, man I couldn't picture this

u/kizerste · 3 pointsr/retrogaming

I bought the following:

150-in-1 Multi-Cart

Clone NES

Clone NES Zapper

All in all I've been pretty happy with what I got. The multi-cart has a lot of really great games. The clone NES allows me to play almost any cartridge and the Zapper works great for light gun games. The clone NES was cheaper at the store as the company that imports these is local to my area. I spent $15 plus tax but the other stuff I ordered online. I spent about $40 total. I also like the fact that this stuff is brand new instead of 30-year old electronics.

u/TemptedTemplar · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

It will not be possible. The dock contains the hardware that tells the switch to shut off the display and display video out. Without it there isnt a current way to tell the system to display over the TV.

Perhaps a third party will make a replacement in the future but for now, youre best off getting a travel bag or case. Or just use a backpack the whole system is really tiny anyways. The Switch plus cables and controllers is like half the volume and weight of an xbox one without cords.

Funny you mention the reverse engineering thing. I had one of those tiny aftermarket NES's that I was planning on cramming into some tupperware to make a portable NES. I should finish that project...

u/callahan09 · 1 pointr/RetroPie

Thanks for the recommendation on the case! I've decided to go ahead and get one!

Here's what I ultimately decided to go with:

u/racetothemiddle · 2 pointsr/nes

I don't know enough about it to say, but I do know that a lot of the third party replacement adaptors aren't the same voltage/amperage. They will sometimes work "ok" but there's going to be less of a tolerance.

The official ones output 1.3A 9V vs (for example) this random replacement https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001S2VT6I that provides 350mA. Supposedly, according to internet posts here and elsewhere, the NES draws 800-900mA max.

I don't know specifically about the NES, but I think it's entirely possible that in some cases a game could play fine but when there were a lot of sprites/CPU calculations then games could glitch or even shut the system down. Likewise some games might do processing at the title screen that causes it.

u/ascoolas · 5 pointsr/bartenders

Works great, though I went and found some used original NES controllers, which work a bit better. You can still find lots of old used NES titles for cheap on amazon.

u/Pilcrow182 · 2 pointsr/gamecollecting

I don't see a full-sized SNES or Genesis/MegaDrive either (unless you've got them somewhere else). If you're interested in the clone systems, I'd recommend a Retron 3. They're like half the price of a Retron 5 and almost as useful; they can't play GB/GBC/GBA or MasterSystem games, but for NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis/MegaDrive, they're pretty decent!

u/greentrump1 · 7 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

I bought the Hyperkin Travel Bag off of Amazon, and I think it's fantastic. It can't quite hold everything you're wanting, but it fits the Switch, the dock, it has a strap perfect for holding a pro controller in place, and just a little bit of extra room (I use that space for a Joy-con wheel). If you're willing to put your Switch in a separate case (I do this because I personally prefer putting my switch in a hard case) or not bring your dock around, that'd give you plenty of space for all the extra accessories you're looking for.

Edit: Here's an Amazon link. It's even on sale today!

u/ChronicBurnout3 · 2 pointsr/gamecollecting

That the controller that comes with the Retrobit RetroTrio, an awesome 3in1 system which I fully recommend if you arent attached to playing on original hardware. I'd rate the controllers 8/10, they aren't quite SNES territory but they're very good, and work with all 3 cart types on the RetroTrio which is very convenient.

Amazon used a different listing than what was set up earlier.

Original listing: https://www.amazon.com/Super-NES-Classic/dp/B0721GGGS9/

Live listing: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074XPZDQR/

Word is that they set up a second listing to thwart bots and trackers like NowInStock that would have automatically purchased on the original listing.

However, it also had the side effect that people who were signed up to be informed when the item went live through Amazon's own notification system did not get any notification - because they were signed up to be notified on the original listing only.

It's a game console that has a bunch of NES games on it - there is an SNES model too, which would probably be better for kids (except it's missing Super Mario All-Stars, which is blasphemous)... (Sorry if saying SNES is better than NES for kids is against the rules here).

u/Efriim · 1 pointr/snes

Yeah if it is convenient, it's fun either way.

You will need a 4.5mm Gamebit screwdriver to open a SuperNES One that has a long and skinny neck(actualname?) like this https://www.amazon.com/Security-Screwdriver-Nintendo-Consoles-ninthseason/dp/B01ECGHJX8/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=gamebit+4.5mm&qid=1555178666&s=gateway&sr=8-8

Alternatively.

You can mold one out of a pen.

Find a pen that is relatively hard plastic and skinny enough to fit into the holes on the back of the supernes.

Take the ink out and dispose of it so you have just the pen tube.

Find a lighter.

If you have some sort of handkerchief or glasses you can use it as a mask, else get ready to hold your breath.

Prepare to melt the end of the pentube by applying heat to it with the lighter, careful not to set it on fire.

and prepare to insert the melting end into the back of the Super NES over the screw.

Execute what you prepared for, you might feel a squish of the melted plastic on the screw, and wait a good minute and a half for the pen to dry and harden over the screw,

this may take a few tries, but if you are careful enough turn slowly to drive the screws out.

Yeah, I have be very careful when I start playing an RTS. Usually it goes, feed him, change him, swaddle him, and then rock him to sleep. Once he's passed out for 5-10 minutes, then I have a decent shot at being able to get a game or two in. Other than that, if I do play a real-time game I try to make sure it's a SP game that I can pause if I need to.

I am looking forward to introducing him to two player games as he gets older. I have two of these and will be introducing him to all the old classics.

u/jdjmad · 1 pointr/nesclassicmods

I appreciate the response. There are a couple wireless options out there that look similar to the NES Classic controller that have the home button, but I'm not sure I want to go down the wireless route, I've read mixed reviews. There is also a wired version coming out at the end of February that looks promising (https://www.amazon.com/My-Arcade-GamePad-Retro-Classic-Controller/dp/B01M5IH8K5/), but I was hoping for something in the mean time.

u/henrytm82 · 8 pointsr/gaming

That makes me legitimately sad for you :( The fact that this cart is still functioning is due either to a minor miracle, or someone having replaced the battery at some point.

The good news is that you can keep your old carts going by simply replacing the batteries yourself! They run on standard flat watch-type batteries that are easy and cheap to find (though they do sometimes require a tiny bit of soldering), and you can purchase a kit for pretty cheap that will give you the proper tools to maintain your carts!

u/RSTVideoCustomerHelp · 1 pointr/retrogaming

72-pin connector, yo. If you can't replace that, you don't deserve to work on anything, at all, ever.

https://www.amazon.com/Connector-Nintendo-System-Bulk-Packaging-entertainment/dp/B002DLOM6C/ref=sr_1_3?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1517525131&sr=1-3&keywords=72+pin

FYI, the grip is tighter for a reason (if you read the customer reviews). The original connector was soft and wasn't able to dig through the oxidation from the pins of the game, and would also easily get permanent set. The stiffer pins makes sure it grabs on tight for a good connection.

Edit: why in the fuck was this downvoted?

If you're asking about a video switch of some kind, you can definitely get them from Amazon.

If you're asking about a device that plays "all" games, the closest you're going to get is just emulation on a PC. Other than that, you'll have to look at devices like the Retron, but that only covers NES, SNES and Genesis.

So my best suggestion would be that you go to your local thrift-store and go through their bin of cords and find a Power adapter that outputs 9V @ 1000Ma or (1 Amp) and go from there. I have found so many power adapters this way, its ridiculously easy to do. Many old phones used the same voltage as the NES and the same plug. I wish you luck and remember, be careful.

It looks like a pin problem. Most of the time, from what I have experienced with my NES, it is a pin problem. Opening one up and replacing the pin set is really super easy! They're cheap, but I'll stop by work tomorrow and see if we have any extras I could send your way. :)

Looking at Amazon they do already have several products like controllers out there, so I don't doubt they will release this. Then again, judging only by Amazon reviews for their NES GamePad Pro the reactions are very mixed.

u/B2Dirty · 1 pointr/gaming

You could have fixed it with this, but nice lunch box.

This is why I am confident PC gaming will keep on top. You can still keep the magic feeling of the controller.

u/kenabi · 2 pointsr/gaming

new 72 pin connectors are like, ~$10 and fairly easy to replace. barring that, the lockout chip is easy to disable (fiddle with one pin (#4), carefully), but does make a select few games unplayable so isn't desirable for some, or for those wishing to keep their units as stock as possible. the unit i snipped the lockout chips pin on is rather beat up anyway, so no loss for me.

but lockout chip issues are usually a white screen and red flashing power light as it soft resets every second trying to find the lockout chip that should be in the cart. and even then, most of the time a new connector fixes all those concerns.

grey screens tend to be general contact issues in the connector.

and most nes consoles have standard phillips head screws. i do see the random one that had them swapped to the stupid nintendo lobed screws, but since you're the original owner and all, it should have phillips and it'll be simple enough :)

u/Alt4ScrewdriverOo · 2 pointsr/retrogaming

I would stay away from lukiegames, there is many other better places to get stuff. I personally don't like how lukiegames get their stuff or how they operate. Their prices are much higher than what you could find on eBay. $100 for a SNES with the wires and no game is just insane. Here is one that has the box for around the same price. If you want a retron 3 here is one brand new. Here is just a SNES console with wires.

Please give your money to someone that isn't lukiegames, they are known as the biggest douche resellers on eBay. There are many sellers out there that treat people much better and sell stuff at reasonable prices.

u/specterofthepast · 1 pointr/gaming

Just a quick warning, some of that emulation can require a beefy CPU.

Ok first off does the computer currently have a VGA port on it? If so try a VGA to RCA/S-video cable. This is the cheapest test run option.

Now then as for hooking up controllers:

Hyperkin NES USB controller

There are a lot of these types. Hyperkin is a more reputable company so I went with them. Just make sure you read the reviews. Because you can get SNES & N64 as well as other types of retro style USB game pads.

Try this as a replacement. It's even a SNES. Plus side is that it's a top loader even for the NES carts, which is WAY better than the side loader for the NES as you shouldn't have nearly as many problems getting the game to work.

Looks good, but I'd suggest buying a hyper 212 and overclocking that pentium, as can be fairly CPU intensive depending on the accuracy of the emulation.

Also, why not get some USB NES/SNES controllers?

Except it doesn't exactly work like that. The cartridge fits fairly snugly into the pin carriage. Each pin is basically it's own spring, and with use, these pins can bend enough that they no longer connect. The NES is ridiculously easy to take apart, and these pins can be gently bent back down one by one with a bent sewing pin. Or you can just replace the whole pin carriage, they are still available on Amazon.

Eta link tutorial for bending the pins down. Fix your Nintendo 72 Pin Connector:
