Also, N64 emulation on PC has actually overtaken the N64 itself as the best way to play your favourite old games! It sounds positively heretical, but hear me out.

The N64 has some built-in pseudo-anti-aliasing in the form of blurriness on its analog video out, even with the S-video cables. If you want to get a clear signal on a modern TV, you'd have to use a sharpening upscaler like a Framemeister, which runs well north of $300.

Conversely, Project64 is free, and runs well even on modest computers from the mid-2000's. Even a netbook can run Perfect Dark uprendered to 1080p at 60fps. And man, these old games are even more beautiful than you remember when you see them in true high def. Or b

And, if you get some of these, you get both a lag-free wireless experience, and the most authentic feeling thumbstick you can find short of a genuine new-in-box N64 controller from 1996. Or, if you already have good controllers, a couple of these and a few minutes to calibrate each controller will let you and your buddies huddle around the console in true N64 fashion.

while an eventual obtaining of the collection again complete with the boxes and manuals sounds like a much better collection, and while I'm sure there's nothing else you could do to get that car if you're putting up the N64, I hope you know that a set CiB will cost at least twice what you'd sell everything for.

that said, if you really have to sell, at the very least, I think you should keep your controllers, get this adapter and emulate everything. I have that adapter. I love mine. it's very picky with third party controllers, and most don't work, such as my Madcatz turbo controllers, so your SuperPad might not work. but it likes official controllers like the other two controllers you have in that image, and it also likes close replicas like these.

and be aware, on Project 64, I had to find a new controller plugin and change to it for it all to work. after I configured it, Darkman's worked with the controller perfectly. Jabo(which is normally the default one) wouldn't read the joystick properly and N-Rage wouldn't let me use the C buttons. it was very strange. but, the adapter is plug and play, so no drivers to find for that.

the emulator with the actual controllers is the second best experience for it. keyboard controls are just awkward for the N64, and other USB controllers really change the experience because of how peculiar an N64 controller is. even with the occasional graphical glitches through emulation not being perfected, most can be solved between using Project 64 1.6 and 1.7. Space Station Silicon Valley, for example, in 1.6, doesn't show the power cells properly, but 1.7 fixes this.

if nothing else, I hope that my advice for emulating helps lessen the pain for you. I can only imagine what I'd be like without my N64. a lot of really great games I have actual rom cartridges of, and others I emulate with the same setup I suggested you give a try, and for very many, I do both.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression a lot of speed runs were done with emulators, especially on older console games. I figure it's easier to stream and all. There might be some kind of verification of the rom file and emulator that is being used, but I really have no idea to that extent.


For N64, I've always used an emulator called Project 64, specifically version 1.6 as it seems to be the most stable with a variety of games. You can download the game files, i.e. roms, from sites like Emuparadise.



For the controller you can just map keys to your liking on the keyboard through the Pj64 settings, but I definitely prefer using an original controller. So if you're looking to go that route, try to buy an original controller or two from Craigslist or a retro gaming shop. Then you'll need to get an usb adapter to connect it to your PC. You'll need to do some configuring/calibrating to get it functioning correctly with Pj64, but it's not overly complicated and I'm sure there are plenty of tutorials out there. Edit: There are third party N64 controllers and even some that have direct USB plugs, but I've never been happy with the quality or feel of them.

If you're looking to get into competitive speed runs, definitely do some more research as there may be specific recommendations for hardware and software setups. What I wrote above is all just from personal experience for gaming leisurely. I still have an original Nintendo 64 console, but I play some games on emulator because I do not have the cartridge or feel like spending the money on one. Hope this helps.

I use a X360 controller (map the C buttons to the right analog stick). If you want to play with an actual N64 controller you will need to buy an adapter.

As far as you laptop goes, what matters most is your video card. I was able to play this on an old dell latitude d810, but that was without the upgraded texture pack.

It runs really well on my gaming rig though.

I've tried some of the usb controllers and wasn't satisfied. They're often too light-weight or the buttons aren't as responsive, or some little nagging thing. Personal recommendation would be to go for the real deal and get an N64 to usb Controller Adapter or two. They're surprisingly easy to use (nearly plug-and-play, but you need to configure the emulator settings so it knows which is controller 1, controller 2, etc.).

That being said, it sounds like you might be happier getting the real deal hardware. Nothing will feel spot on compared to the original hardware. Plus, if it sounds fun for your bachelor party, who's to say it can't be something fun to do any other time you're all together in the future, right?

I recommend a Sony Trinitron if you get a CRT. These sets are the most well-built among tube TVs, which matters a lot when you're looking for a 10-30 year old appliance. Sony also held a patent on the best CRT technology for almost the entire time CRT sets were relevant, so Trinitrons have objectively better picture quality than any competing sets of the day. Make sure you get the remote with the TV in case you need to adjust the picture. 20"-25" is a good size for a multiplayer gaming TV in the corner, but you might want an extra set of hands to help you move anything larger than 24" depending on how far you'll have to carry it.

Also, for $20-$25 online, you can get an S-Video cable for the N64. S-video is a much clearer video signal than the standard yellow-RCA-jack composite video, which is itself just compressed S-video. Here is a comparison between the two. If you decide to get one of these I cannot recommend ANY generic cables since they're almost always terribly cheap and it's a matter of luck whether they will work, so get a Nintendo-brand cable for either composite or S-video.

You can also get replacement N64 joysticks online, (like here or here) some of them arguably superior to the originals. A lot of those Mario Party minigames will kill N64 joysticks, especially OG sticks, which need to be re-lubricated (I recommend white lithium grease) after twenty years of use. There are also plenty of kooky, unorthodox third-party controllers for the N64 which, by virtue of their design, add some challenge to games you thought you were good at.

Sorry for the wall of text, there's just a lot of technical stuff that goes a long way in improving the retro gaming experience, and most of the high-end and cutting-edge stuff of yesterday is obscure knowledge now. S-Video will give you the biggest bang for your buck, and combining that with a compatible Trinitron will get you ~90% of what hundreds of dollars of equipment can do. And that means more games. =)

This site used to have a ton of good information, but now it's down. That's where I got my info, but the stuff I gave you above should be enough.

In my controller I had:

• A bare ATmega328p
  
• A replacement N64 joystick, gutted, so I was only using the analog joystick
  
• 400mAh li-ion battery with a 2.5v regulator to power both the ATmega and the NRF24L01+
  
  I took the chip out of the N64 controller and wired all the buttons and the joystick to the ATmega. For power savings, the positive line for the joystick was hooked up to a GPIO pin so I could switch it off. Every 5ms the controller wakes up, reads the buttons and joystick state, transmits it, then goes to sleep again. With some other optimizations, I got the controller to draw less than 1mA while using it. :)
  
  On the receiver side I had a custom board with an STM32 microcontroller, but you can do it with a Teensy 3. No voltage regulator needed, the N64 uses 3.3V for the controllers.
  I recommend using something faster than 16MHz because while you can make it work, you'll need to do a bit of assembly and it's a bit more fiddly. Use a Teensy 3.0 at 72MHz and you'll have much more headroom.
  
  You need to use the links I gave you to re-implement the N64 controller protocol in the Teensy. Every time the N64 requests controller data, just give it the latest info you received from the controller.
  
  I'm not sure how much you know so this might all sound like a bit much! I'll be happy to try to help you but this sort of project will be very difficult if you don't have decent coding skills.

Here's the thing with ordering these. I ordered from the same amazon listing twice and got a different version of the stick both times.

If you get one with a rubbery tip, you're going to experience the issues he mentioned in his video. Large dead zone, less degrees of freedom, very small area recognized as "slightly" pushing (making it really hard to walk slowly).

But if you get a plasticy one that has "V3" on the bottom, you won't experience those issues. The one I have with "V3" on the bottom has a slightly larger deadzone than the n64, but has all the degrees of freedom. And it's easy to walk slowly with.

The rubber one is still better than a loose stick, so for $11 I think it's a good option.

You can also find imitations of the original n64 stick on amazon and ebay (just search n64 replacement stick). Though I imagine you'd run into similar issues.

Personally, I feel the best controller for the n64 is the Hori one. But those are expensive these days.

So I am planning to purchase a N64 Adaptoid that someone is selling and I have a few questions that would influence my decision on purchasing it.

1.Should I even buy an adapter? There are 3rd party wireless and wired N64 look a like controllers for PC. Should I consider those?

2.Is the Adaptoid compatible with Windows 10 64-bit?

3.Does Adaptoid work well with N64 emulators? Specifically Project 64.

This is my opinion, so take it as you will;

Many here are saying specialty shops for games and systems, and frankly I just don't see the point of that. blah blah nostalgia but bottom line is that paying what the thing costs new from a reseller (no profit to the original developers of the hardware or software) is hugging the line between "Stupid" and "Stupid Hipster".

Get your Sega Controller, SNES Controller, NES Controller, N64 controller... or just a good general controller which can be used for many games. I own a few of these and I'll tell you right now that overall they feel very authentic. I have the black version of that N64 controller for example and once I start playing I can't tell the difference between it and the original.

And then get a good pack of ROMs to get you started.

There are so many advantages to emulating these systems that it's hard to decide where to begin. Simple, reliable, and you can fit whole libraries of games on a thumb drive. From right now I could be playing any NES title you can imagine in a minute, and switch to any N64 title in the same time without screwing with cords and boxes taking up space.

I respect the fact that piracy is a no-no. However this money is not going to the people who make the games. It's going to resellers who are charging you for nostalgia, so you can use unsupported equipment which can and will screw up on you (if you don't get bored with it and wonder why you dropped a few hundred bucks on games from when you were 10).

I actually use an N64 on my PC for games like Persona 4 (emulated) and Street Fighter IV. USB-N64 adapters can be found for around $20. This Amazon listing appears to be the same converter I have, and you can find it listed on eBay by searching for "N64 USB" (sans quotes).

Warning: The vast, vast majority of N64-USB converters out there (mine included) tend to be rather hit and miss. I wouldn't call them "garbage," because when they do work, they work beautifully. The problem is, they only work with a small percentage of controllers. This isn't a problem with the adapter, but rather, it's due to the way that Nintendo manufactures the controllers. The converter that I use (linked above) only works with one of the five N64 controllers I have tried it with.

The exception to "n64-usb converters only work with a small fraction of controllers," I have been told, is the adaptoid. (You can find it by searching "adaptoid" on Google or eBay search or whatever.) This converter supposedly has 100% compatibility. However, it is out of production, very rare, and very expensive. When they pop up on eBay they usually go for $80+

In short, I would advise against trying to get a bunch of N64 adapters for you and your friends. If you're lucky, you might get one of your controllers to work with an adapter, but don't count on it.

If your friends have Xbox 360 controllers or PS3 controllers, those can be used. If you have a bluetooth adapter for your PC, Wii controllers can also be used. Xbox controllers can also be easily modded to work with PC. (The connection they use is actually USB, it just uses a proprietary plug.) If you have any of these controllers lying around already, I'd recommend using them just because you can, but I wouldn't recommend going out and buying them because they're more expensive than what you'd get from Logitech.

Word of advice about N64 controllers, if you find yourself using them (either with the actual console or because you got a working adapater): the joystick tends to become loose and worn out on the inside from age. If you ever see powder or a pasty build-up around the joystick's seat, that dust is plastic that is being ground up inside the controller. The best thing you can do for an old N64 controller is to replace the joystick. I bought new joysticks on eBay, $6 for a set of two, and installing them makes old controllers feel like new.

First, the query "n64 controller tight stick" on eBay tends to find original controllers for $20-30. I've bought two controllers advertised in this fashion, and both felt like they'd never been used.

They're in the process of making joysticks out of steel with the intention of emulating the original feel. They'll likely be quite pricey, but should function as a permanent replacement. I'm also checking in regularly to this project, which is looking to make injection-molded copies of the original parts.

Lastly, you can buy an aftermarket joystick. This Gamecube-style joystick is quite nice. I've got it in one of my controllers now, and while it's not quite the same, it's very nice. I've found most games to not play any different with it, and I'm happy not worrying about grinding the stick down any more.

You can check either the Brawler 64 or the Tribute 64. They the best “modern” alternatives for N64 controllers imo.

If you prefer using your GameCuber controller there’s a ton of adapters around. Personally I would not recommend them since depending on the game you’re going to be spending a lot of time reconfiguring buttons. The layout doesn’t translate well between the two.

If you like the original form factor of the N64 controller there’re stick replacements on Amazon. Reviews are all over the place for those, some people like them, others not so much. But they’re cheap so maybe its worth a try.

Now as a fan of the original N64 joystick I am also obligated to mention Steel sticks 64 who sell parts that you can use to turn your broken N64 stick into an stainless steel behemoth. Several speed runners that are used to the original design use these because if properly maintained (aka: add a little bit of lubricant every once in a while) they’re pretty much indestructible and will last forever.

If it makes things easier, the Brawler64 by RetroFighters is a modern take on the N64 controller. Imo the plastic molding on the controller feels a little cheap - as well as the joystick, and it’s not going to be the best controller for shooters due to the sensitivity. But it’s still one of the best options out there for the N64. I actually have five of these controllers (one of each funtastic cooored variant they have released)

The Tribute 64 is another great option. It has more of a retro feel, almost like an N64 controller meets the GameCube controller.

To add to that, never buy any one of those cheap third party controller, except for maybe this Retro Bit one. I did end up buying a no name controller and, totally not surprisingly, it is rubbish and almost useless.

I recommend buying at least 1 Brawler64 controller. They are more costly, but from all I've heard they are by far the very best new controller to get right now, except for new or almost new original controllers, which are much more expensive.

Having a good controller is extremely important and just not necessarily given when buying an N64 today, so do pay attention to that :)

People frown upon emulators since there is a tiny difference, but if you don’t have the money, use an emulator. If you have some to spare, buy an n64. Although I would start with the emulator because save states will be very helpful when starting out.

Edit: I would recommend a controller kinda like this, just, if you use an actual n64 controller, don’t use an original because the stick wears down over time. Buy a slightly modified one from amazon.

It's the best compromise. Like I said, the Retron 5 technically uses emulation rather than original hardware to power the games, so it's not going to be a totally 1:1 experience when compared to the original hardware. The only difference between this and a Raspberry Pi solution is that you're using your own carts, because you can even get a USB 2-port N64 controller adaptor for like, $20.

To be honest, the only advantage the Retron has is that you get to use your old saves on the carts, but to be honest I'd be leery of doing that these days: We're already well-beyond the average lifespan of the save batteries inside N64 carts, and even the ones which use flash memory instead aren't 100% reliable anymore.

PDP have yet to produce a controller that doesn't suck - just read reviews for controllers like this. Definitely go with the Hori option, they have almost always produced controllers that are on par with first-party offerings, if not surpassing them.

EDIT: I should probably mention that above both of those options I would still recommend using the wired GC controller adaptor that Nintendo are releasing, along with an official GC controller, as obviously I can say with 100% certainty that the controllers are comfortable and well-made. But if you have your heart set on one of the Mario-themed controllers, definitely go with Hori, I am willing to bet that it will at least be of passable quality.

People have already correctly advised you to get an analog to VGA converter box, but I'd like to chime in and suggest you get a Nintendo S-Video cable as well. S video looks much better than composite, and the better signal you feed into the VGA box, the better the output will be.

I wasn't using opportunist bids. I found 3 auctions for each game and averaged them. If I were wanting to use opportunist bids, I would've only used 1 auction. 3 auctions pointing to the same thing is not 'opportunist' it's an average. Also, if you click on 'completed auctions' on the VGPC page, you'll see that the previous 3 before the most recent (exorbitantly priced) auction, are all at the $20 mark. Furthermore, Amazon is a horrible gauge of price, since they're typically 20-30% above FMV.

Also, about the eBay 'buy it now' auctions. You didn't even use completed auctions. You can list an item at any price you want, it doesn't mean it's going to sell for that price.

I definitely agree with you about that there's are misperceptions about the quality of the N64's library. Sure, not every game is Super Mario 64, but there's still a lot of fun games or games worth playing because they really tried something unique.

You can see how they are different. The joysticks are easy to swap out and you will not wear them out unlike the traditional joysticks. You will always have "tight sticks"

An adapter turns out to be the easy part.

The joypad mod I was seeing in my search earlier looks like it supports 1.11.2, but not the current version. Another one I found looked like it only supports PS4 and XB1 controllers.

So the answer may be "yes, if you're willing to play an older version of the game". Or, I guess look for something like joy2key.

• I personally use this adapter and an actual N64 controller. I also own an N64 and play games on that (but can only stream PC, so can't stream console). It's really nice because I can use the same controller for console and emulator. I used to run with this controller, and it worked great, but I didn't like it because it was awkward when I played on console with an N64 controller. I know there are also a lot of emulator streamers that just use an Xbox 360 controller because they have native support with windows. Basically, use whatever is comfortable for you.

It's easy to ape Nintendo's success with innovating the analog stick while avoiding the mistakes required by innovation. Also, it's incorrect to say that proper use of the analog stick makes the D-Pad superfluous- many modern games use the left analog stick for movement and the D-pad for menu interaction.

It's actually one of those cheap N64 replacement sticks you can find all over Ebay and Amazon.

Emphasis on "cheap". They look and feel nice, but the pots conversion is total trash and you get some hefty input lag.

But programming your own chip is a great alternative that will work perfectly. Gonna cost you quite a bit more than 10 cents though, that's for sure.

I'd go with this if they are tourney legal. Not sure on it, but my friend bought 4 of these and 4 used original controllers and they are the best I've ever used.

I used these. Takes away a little authenticity, but they feel fantastic and will probably age better. They're also very easy to swap in.

I'm a big fan of emulation. If you think you may ever want to some more N64 gaming, consider picking up one of these adapters. That, plus an n64 controller will run you less than $30 and you've set up a pretty authentic n64 experience.

Also, people have reminded you of Link to the Past, and even the original Legend of Zelda (which I'd recommend you try eventually, if nothing else to get a feel for the types of games NES had!) - keep in mind these are easily emulated and a ps3 or xbox controller will map very well.

Also, 'eShop' is Nintendo's digital shop for Wii U and 3DS. Since Ocarina of Time is not released for Wii U, it's obviously 3DS. What I use to really relive my childhood is an N64 to USB adapter. You can get them for $12 on Amazon. The one I linked is the one I use and it works perfectly. It supports two controllers, so you can play with a friend or buy a second one to get a 4 player game going. If you still have your old N64 controllers, that's all you need.

A replacement stick is usually the best way, not sure if you can get replacements. This little baby works like a charm, and is the closest you will ever get to the original. It's a tad stiff at first and a notch high in sensitivity, but it works flawlessly after a few playthroughs. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to replace their N64 joysticks for a cheap price and a close resemblance to the original.

There's a really good triple-adapter my friend has, for plugging SNES, PS1, and N64 controllers into USB... I forget what it's called though.

EDIT: I haven't found the exact adapter he has. It looks almost identical to this one, but his is a 3-in-1 (N64/PSX/SNES) rather than this 2-in-1 (which is missing SNES)... Might be better to get this one and have the option of using Saturn controllers instead (especially the awesome circle/3D pad)...

I've reconditioned half a dozen n64 controllers with these. They're amazing, way better than original, and aren't using fucking optical sensors and wheels like the original. What a batshit crazy design.

I have a Mayflash Super Joy Box 13 that adapts GameCube to USB. All the buttons and levers work (even the analog shoulder buttons), and it only cost me $5 on eBay. I used to use that to play N64 ROMs... an old classmate burned me his ROM collection. N64 took 6 CDs.

Without doing some more expensive modding, the short/cheap answer would be to buy a SNES S-Video cable.

Slightly better will be the component cord, and probably a little more expensive, and lastly and most expensively, mod your system for RGB output and get an RGB capable monitor.

Common practice would be to get the S-Video cable.

easy! 7 screws, and 2 smaller ones and the controller is apart. There were 2 or 3 more holding in the joystick unit, and it was plug and play. There was a minor bit of sanding to get it to plug in, then just put it all back together. I got it here but the price went up to $11.95 with free shipping. It's basically a new controller, and you won't have to worry about the joystick getting lose like the old ones did.

That kind has the metal joystick, but it's not as well built as the kind I was talking about.

That's the type I have and I like it quite a bit. I've also heard that the Makopad 64 is essentially the same thing but with a clear purple body, although I haven't seen one in person to confirm it has the metal thumbstick.

Honestly I'm a much bigger fan of these that I just got from amazon instead. I don't really trust a $20 controller, and for that price you can pick up two of these. Installation was easy and it's just like playing on a classic N64 controller, but better.

This cable is just as good or better than any Monster brand S-Video cable.

But honestly, if you paid the dough for an XRGB-Mini Framemeister you should really RGB mod your N64. It's not a lot extra to put out, and it's a huge difference. The colors on S-Video are still very dull and blurred together compared to RGB. My main N64 is an RGB-modded console plugged into a Framemeister, and comparing it with S-Video is a joke.

If you prefer to replace them yourself, the best option is SteelSticks, when they are available. The Hyperkin GameCube style joystick replacement is the next best option. However, there are dead zones with this joystick even though it is a better replacement than almost any other option out there. The resolution to that is to buy or build this.

I love them. I'm not going to for a CIB collection. Maybe one day I'll buy the universal cases for them and print out covers. But the dust sleeves work just fine for now. hmm never saw this, saw a fix that used scotch tape but i thought that it would be to unreliable. I decided to get the redesigned joystick on amazon, looks more like a gamecube stick (Here). Though you can get the normal n64 joystick (Here). Was thinking of getting the normal n64 joystick for my other controller, just in case i don't like this new one. But, so far so good. I'll have to look up the springs, see how much they cost and how much of a hassle they are to get into place. The joystick is really easy to replace, just took awhile to take out 10+ screws that have been screwed into plastic for 10+ years.

If you want to use your game cartridges, then you need a console. There is no simple do it yourself way to play them without a snes or n64 console.

However, On the computer you can emulate games by using an emulator such as project64 and download roms (virtual rips of the cartridges) from a website such as emuparadise and emulate them on your computer. You can use a keyboard to play these games but the best way is to buy a n64 controller and get a n64 to usb adapter

I had one that although the left hand hold was huge it was way better, primarily because the control stick was high quality and didn’t grind and get chalky. It actually had a double hinge design, so it had vertical rotator inside a horizontal one to get the full 360 degrees of rotation, and it was buttery smooth and springy. Like a modern controller. It was also beveled in instead of out so it didn’t hurt your thumb.

People don’t like how it feels in their hands at first with the large left side, but you get used to it quickly and it is very comfy.

In total, besides the current price for the Steel Sticks and possibly the ED64 (depending on if you work or not/ have extra income), an N64 Classic Edition with all of those things, wouldn't be too far off budget.

To be fair, a new boxed copy of Super Mario 64 isn't cheap. I'm sure if you can find a used copy of Catan from the 90s it won't be selling for the MSRP of $40.


EDIT: Well maybe I'm not entirely sure. Looks like there's a lot of jerks on ebay selling the 3rd edition of Catan for $70. Still the point is, at least 20 year board games are still new and in print.

I don't know if you'd be interested but you can get a USB adapter that lets you connect a Nintendo 64 controller to your PC. They're not the best thing in the world but they're really cheap and they work well (I have one). I would sell you my Nintendo 64 with Ocarina of Time but I just can't part with it!

This is the one I have used. It also has good pics and a good read on how to replace.

You can also trying to take apart the housing to reseed your joystick... Getting it back together is a two man job with lots of cussing I have found it easier to just replace it the whole joystick unit than try to reseed it.

Take pics to reassemble it correctly or watch youtube while doing it. Keep the controller upside down while open, reseeding the shoulder buttons is a pain and if you can avoid that it will make your day sooooo much better.

Something like this might be good. I don't own an N64, but I use something similar for some of my SNES cartridges and they're quite good.

For most games I use Mouse+Keyboard but for the few I prefer a controller on (non-64 games) I just use my 360 controller

Project 64 has HD filters. They look great on HD TVs. I use Xbox Media Center on Windows 7. Check out /r/xbmc.

You can get USB N64 controllers, they're expensive and the analog sticks can go wonky. Then you're out $20-$30.

I suggest getting an adapter and picking up some cheapo used N64 controllers.

I'm running a gc stick right now actually. It's a solid little stick. It has a smaller range of motion, hence being more sensitive but I like that. It lets me input actions faster and accuracy just comes from grinding. This is the one I'm using

the plan is to make a 2 player control panel for mame by wiring a joystick and 8 buttons to an wired xbox 360 pcb per player. 6 buttons will be the game buttons, 1 will be the player start, and the leftover 1 will be for adding credits.

Wii i can use bluetooth to sync the controllers.

gb/ gbc / gab / ds I can use the control panel or a ps3 controller through bluetooth.

Then I am getting console plug to usb converters for snes, nes, genesis, n64, playstation, and gamecube controllers so i can play the emulated roms with real controllers. I would like some advice on which ports to buy because I'm not sure if they're gonna work. I read amazon review but thats it

For about 65 bucks you can in a week or so! That's around the same price as a new ps4 game I believe. :)

So I've been looking into controllers and I have come down to three potential conclusions on what to do.

1.) Buy a USB Controller, like this

2.) Buy a classic controller to USB device. like this

3.) Buy a small board that runs a keyboard and place it into a controller shell and map out the keys

I am just using the N64 as an example. I want all original controllers for the various games.


One other thought I had was buying the USB aftermarket controllers then cutting the cord down so its very short and wiring it to a Bluetooth transmitter and than plugging in a Bluetooth receiver into a USB hub. Then adding a LiIo battery pack to the controller. My only hurdle would be making it fit and still light weight and if I needed to have different channels for the four controllers.

I replaced a full set of 4 N64 joysticks and thought it was incredibly easy to do. The joysticks are sold as a very contained component.

Oh, pick up a gameshark. I don't know if you had one back then, but it makes games crazy sometimes. Mario 64 had a levitation code that let Mario fly at will lol!

You can just buy a redesigned module from, for example, amazon and use it to replace the controller's existing stick. It's plug & play so you only need a philips screwdriver.

My N64 is still hooked up to my TV (with a working controller! :O) all I would have to do is have the game arrive at my house.

Try getting one of these, and then run an N64 emulator on your computer. I do this with my SNES controller, and it works amazingly well for that. Also, I have a slight advantage, since I have one of my computers connected to my flatscreen.

If you still have your old N64 controllers, you're probably better off buying an adapter instead. I have no experience with this particular USB controller, but I've noticed that third party "retro USB" controllers tend to be worse than their first party predecessors.

They took a Game Cube analog stick and retrofitted it to fit the N64. It actually lasts for a lot of hard plays, unlike the originals.

As for 360, all the research I did led me to believe that the cord was only used for charging; no data transfer takes place. The 360 still uses wireless to communicate. The driver you posted is only for the wired controller. Edit: this appears to be the case.
