Top Reddit comments about Nintendo Switch Batteries & Chargers:

u/GreninjaNerfer · 5 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

On accessories - must haves definitely include (like everyone else said):

  • microSD card (64GB minimum imo, 128 is what I have because I have a fair amount of digital games)
  • A TEMPERED GLASS screen protector. This is easily the best screen protector on the market.
  • A travel case. I would recommend a nondescript black one; you don't want something that says "STEAL ME PLS"

    Less important things:

  • A stand (the one on the back of the Switch is pretty bad and if you use it a lot it will just snap off). The good ones are the HORI playstand with 3 angles and the official Nintendo charging stand.
  • Power banks/chargers: u/queuebitt made a whole website for this and regularly posts charger/power bank deals on r/NintendoSwitchDeals.
  • Extra controllers and Joy-Con grips: if you're going to play with multiple people you will need to get more controllers unless you want to play with the single Joy-Cons (which isn't a great experience). The Pro Controller you can find for around $60 now; in my opinion it's a really good investment.

Before we get on to games, there's always the debate of physical vs digital. Indie games are often cheaper digitally because they have to partner with companies to release physical copies, but for most "big" titles physical or digital really depends on the game.

  • Physical: the big advantage is that you can sell it once you're done with the game. This is good for games with low replayability, like Mario Odyssey; however, it comes with less convenience because you have to swap out the cartridge every time to switch games.
  • Digital comes with convenience; you don't have to swap out cartridges and you don't have to deal with potential cartridge issues, but you're stuck with the game and digital games go on sale way less often that physical games. Digital is great for games you'll open and play for a few minutes or rounds, like Mario Kart.

On to games. (these are the ones I have and can approve of)

  • Breath of the Wild is a must have if you're going to buy a Switch. It also has fantastic DLC that you'll probably want to buy along with the game.
  • Super Mario Odyssey is also really fun, but doesn't lend itself to multiple playthroughs very well. The first experience is amazing, but subsequent playthroughs don't have the same charm unless you're speedrunning.
  • Super Mario Party is a good experience for the first few times you play it but it suffers from a lack of content. I'd say get it when it goes on sale.
  • Mario Kart is a staple Nintendo game. Consider digital.
  • Smash Ultimate is also fantastic for both large groups and 2 people, but the solo modes aren't as great.
  • Overcooked 1 & 2 are so much fun, especially if you have 4 people. It quickly turns into a glorious mess and I love it.
  • Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is actually surprisingly fun for a game with maniacal rabbits. It also goes on sale ALL THE DAMN TIME so that's also a thing.
  • Splatoon 2 is a very creative, cute and charming game - but it's a team shooter game, so it's easier to get frustrated compared to other games. The DLC (Octo Expansion) is fantastic, though.
  • Hollow Knight, Celeste, and Shovel Knight are all amazing games (especially for the prices you get them at) but they're basically digital only. I'd say get him an eShop card and let him decide which games he wants.

TL;DR microSD card, screen protector, case. eShop card and get Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart at least.

Also: don't buy anything "Nintendo Switch" branded! They're literally the exact same things as the unbranded ones, just priced higher because of the logo.
u/Chokaay · 2 pointsr/Switch

I think most of your questions depend on how you plan to use your Switch. For me, 99.9% of the time I use it in handheld mode, so accessories important for my usage are different than someone who primarily uses it in docked mode.

u/bigylittle · 4 pointsr/NintendoSwitch
  • Screen Protector. I suggest a tempered glass screen protector
  • SD Card. Dpending on how committed you are to digital vs. physical, a 64gb or 128gb should hold you over. Wait for them to go on sale, they go on sale pretty often.
  • Carrying case. I recommend the ButterFox carrying cases, they come in different sizes so pick one that suits you.
  • A stand. By stand I mean something that will hold your Switch and provide access to the USB port for charging. Some recommend the Hori play stand, for me that's a bit too bulky and went with one meant for cellphones, works wonders.
  • Portable battery pack, look for ones with at least 2.1A output to sustain gameplay when charging.
  • Pro controller, it's essential on most games, literally night and day from the joy cons. I suggest getting the Xenoblade version because it has an updated D-Pad that the original has.
  • Another dock, theres a lot of controversy here. There are 3rd party options out there they have been noted as dangerous to your Switch and may brick it and render it useless. From my experience, I've had great success with the Nyko dock and the Best Buy Insignia dock, use these at your own risk. You could play it safe and buy another official Nintendo dock. it's not as cheap however.

Links for all the items I got for your reference:
    Screen Protector
    Memory Card
    Case
    Stand
    Battery Pack
    Pro Controller
    Nyko Dock

Cables

I won't list prices here since they fluctuate a lot. Some of the chargers listed above have a non-removable cable. All the others (except the iPad charger) require a USB C-to-C cable.

USB C-to-C: For the Macbook, Google, SONEic, and battery pack chargers listed above. Here are a few on Amazon: AmazonBasics,
Anker, Cable Matters, Aukey.

USB A-to-C: The iPad charger is the only one that gives good charging speeds with these. The 5ft cable included with the Pro Controller works. Here are some others on Amazon: AmazonBasics, Anker, Cable Matters, Aukey.

No matter which charger you use, it doesn't matter whether the cable says it's USB 2.0, USB 3.0, or USB 3.1. They all charge at the same speed. Just make sure it has the correct plug shape on each end, that it has good reviews at a reputable merchant, and that it's long enough for how you want to use it.

u/Lorben · 3 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

>So apparently Yu-Gi-Oh does not support cloud saves. Does the game itself have any other means to help players secure their save games or progress?

The Switch has no way to back up saves outside of cloud saves. If it doesn't support it, you can't back up your saves.

>Can anyone recommend a stand that can charge the Switch (whether I slip the USB cable through an opening or whether there is a USB plug - either way works) and help prop the Switch at an angle comfortable for an adult playing wirelessly when sitting in coach during a flight?

Nintendo has an official charging stand. There's a USB C plug on the side where you can plug in a charger or battery bank.

Or regular adjustable stands for the Switch are pretty easy to come by.

>When you put the Switch in the dock and play in TV mode, is it normal that the Switch seems to charge really slowly (if at all)?

The Switch will charge more slowly if being actively used. It charges faster in sleep mode.

u/Mybbor · 1 pointr/onebag

Heya 👋. I’ve been lurking here for a while and just completed my first week out of a single bag! Woot! I had a really solid two bag system dialed in, but I scaled back and swapped in some more versatile clothing.

My Switch was something I never thought twice about packing before, but I never used it apart from plane rides. For this trip, I grabbed one of these USB C adapters for the JoyCon then loaded up my computer with an emulator and a bunch of NES, SNES, and N64 games. It was solid! I played all my favorite old console games and it was such a great time killer for the plane ride and the JoyCon takes next to no space.

Wanted to share but mainly say thanks for all the info and inspiration. Just did a week in Bangkok, currently in Chiang Mai, then heading to the Philippines next.

u/robeschi · 3 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

This site is a great read for chargers, power banks, cables, and has a few gift/traveling guides that you might find useful.

I love the Pro Controller (you may need two, I have a feeling you and your wife will fight over it.)

I don't know if it's to everyone's liking, but I find Diablo 3 an absolute blast and you can do local co-op docked or undocked with 4 people (each person can use 1 joycon, 2 joycons [one in each hand or both in a holder], or a different controller altogether.)

This is the tempered glass screen protector that is most often recommended on this sub. I like these Joy-Con holders - they make the Joy-Cons feel more like full-sized controllers and you can charge them right in the holder. You might want to get a bag to carry everything around in easily.

u/ppandie · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

I've been on international and USA domestic flight with my switch in carryon and have never had any trouble. It's basically a tablet + controllers, so you might need to take it out separately in the bin for security if thats a requirement where you are.

If the international flight has outlets between the seats, you should be golden! Otherwise the usb charging port that most airlines have won't keep it fully charged the entire time, but will still prolong the battery life a good bit from my experience (especially if you start with full charge and keep it plugged in). You can also invest in a power bank that has power delivery(?) feature.

I would really recommend this charging stand thing also: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D12JGBB/
This way you can play table top mode on the airplane tray thing and charge at the same time.

Happy travels!

I use this stand all the time. Just plug a cable in and the switch charges. It also makes the switch really stable
It’s $25 Canadian
https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07D12JGBB/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_DRnzCbV41KT4E

I got this battery case. It works really well and has adjustable kickstands. $50 Canadian
https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07JBX74S9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_HXnzCbM92HKFV

This is a really good carrying case. It’s small and compact. Can hold the switch in it’s battery case. It also holds a lot of games. It’s black with grey Mario print on it. So if you don’t like Mario that might be a deal breaker. But it’s pretty good. It’s at Best Buy for $20 Canadian

Ill build two routes handheld gaming and docked.

Docked

Switch - $300

Pro Controller -$65

Legend of Zelda BOTW - 44.99

Mario Kart 8 -$55

Total - $ 464.00

Handheld

Switch - $300

Legend of Zelda BOTW - 44.99

Nintendo Official Wall Charger - $28 (I choose this because I am very picky about power options with consoles and I know this will function)

Switch Case - $15 (This can be hit or miss a lot of people love butterfox but my two smelled like shit and opted for a better version, but for the price it is unbeatable, worth the risk of the smell)

Mario Kart 8 -$55

Total - $443

Games can be changed in and out but imo BOTW is the best game on the switch and Mario Kart 8 is loads of fun. I personally do not have a pro controller, mainly because I play strictly handheld but from what I have been told it is a must for docked gameplay.

Edit: In the future you are going to need a SD card. Especially if you are going the Digital route, again personally I prefer physical and the at of collecting the games but that is me.

u/kaeyay · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

Joycon grips are the best solution right now.

I recommend the official Nintendo Joy con battery grip.

Cons first: It's relatively expensive and only works with detached joycons since the grips have their own rails. Made with hard plastic so it's not squishy like silicone grips (whether or not that's a pro/con is up to you)

Pros: Extends battery life if you typically leave the joycons off and, more comfy to hold for certain hands than just joycons, SL and SR easier to press in single joycon mode, adds weight for extra stabilization depending on how many batteries you put in. Also, 0 or 1 batteries inserted does not charge your joycon, so if you prefer not to actually use up batteries you can go this route and still have a nice grip.

u/r40k · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

Keep your toenails longer and use those instead.

Okay, okay, honestly the best thing to do would probably be some light surgery on your Switch. Pop the kickstand off by opening it beyond its stopping point (it will be fine, it pops right back into place pretty easily). If you look on the bottom of the kickstand where it hooks into the bottom of the Switch, you'll see the only thing holding it closed are a couple of plastic "teeth" or nubs. You could file those down just enough to make it easy to pop open without having it fall open on its own, maybe? Replacement kickstands are $4, so even if you fuck up it wouldn't cost much to replace.

The other option is the $20 charging stand which is much, much better than the basic kickstand because it actually lets you charge it while its standing, and it's adjustable. It's also $20 and its another attachment to carry around with you, though.

u/VR_Bummser · 8 pointsr/OculusQuest

For everyone in Germany. I can confirm these two cables work flawlessly, giving together 6.8 meters of freedom.

u/PGZ4sheezy · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

I've heard that you can charge the Switch out of the dock via a USB-C adapter plug thing. Do I need to use the official Nintendo Switch AC Adapter, or am I safe using just my phone (HTC 10) wall adapter and any USB-C cable?

Planning to finally join you guys officially next week thanks to Target's 20% coupon and this sub and /r/NintendoSwitchDeals have been amazing for making sure I know and save as much money as possible as I hop on board.

I've bought quite a few switch accessories.

I bought the Pro Controller.
Works great. Exactly as advertised.

The Nintendo Joy-Con, Neon Blue & Neon Red - Left and Right Edition.
Also works great.

HORI Officially Licensed Premium Protective Filter for Nintendo Switch .

This is not great. I find the edges of it are always peeling back especially along the bottom. However installation was easy.

Because of the above I've now bought:

Spigen Nintendo Switch Screen Protector Tempered Glass / 2 Pack / 9H Hardness for Nintendo Switch 2017

I have not used it yet so I cannot comment on its effectiveness.

I have also ordered the following:

HORI NSW-003U Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Charge Stand Officially Licensed

It was supposed to be released on April 12th according to Amazon and it still hasn't shipped and Amazon doesn't have any accurate information as to when they will receive stock.

I'm pretty sure that's it so far.

u/wdouglass · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

I find the "Joycon in each hand" thing to be super uncomfortable -- they don't have enough volume, maybe my hands are too big. They're fine attached to the switch, and i'm really glad that it came with the grip.

Maybe something like this will make them more comfortable -- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071XXXK2X

u/wileymurkykidde · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Previously commented in /r/nintendo:

Wow! Both the original post and the comments are really thorough. I have to confess a lot of this is over my head.

I have a question: is it safe to use a 3rd-party converter with an official Nintendo AC adapter?

For example:

  • MoKo 3 in 1

  • Nintendo Switch AC Adapter

I'm hoping the converter simply acts as a pass-through, and that the power adapter works as it should.

Note: I hope links to Amazon are allowed. Apologies if they aren't. I wanted to make sure I identified the products I own.
u/spoon98 · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

I tried looking up if anyone has used this charger https://smile.amazon.com/FastSnail-Controller-Nintendo-Charging-Indicator/dp/B0786BNC1L/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1541190827&sr=1-2&keywords=FastSnail+Controller+Charger it to see if it was good or not as i can charge my joycons and a switch tablet if I have a friend over with their own switch. I was however concerned as i heard using third party products for charging can lead to systems being bricked and wanted to be sure it wasn't the case for this one as well as if it was good or not to use.

u/Bukosai · 2 pointsr/Switch

PDP has some kits with some cheap accessories. It includes a case as well, this all costs around 30 bucks (USD)
Nyko has a accessory known as "Clip Grip Power". It's the Joycon grip with a 3000 mAh power bank inside, and a phone stand for the Nintendo Switch Online App. I have one and it's really good, especially if you don't already own a power bank for your switch. This was 25 bucks. Very good price compared to the charging grip by Nintendo.
Split Joycon grips are available for less than 15 bucks, I have a pair (I forget what brand, but most look the same) and they work great. Back to Nyko, they said they are going to make a portable dock that is essentially the same one as the official dock. Here's a amazon link; go to nyko.com for a gamestop release date. https://www.amazon.com/Nyko-Portable-Docking-Kit-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B071X7C1B4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1501733668&sr=8-1&keywords=743840872252
As of now, this is supposed to be 50 bucks.
HORI recently made a controller which is cheaper than the pro controller, with a few drawbacks, like it's wired, no gyroscope or NFC reader, and so on. I don't own one; but it's 30 bucks. It seems like a good controller.

Honestly, cases will be on your taste. Some are too big (like that game traveler deluxe case; jeez that's huge.) Some offer too little. You decide. I just stuck with a basic BoTW case with 14 game cards for the future.

What you should get:

  • Screen Protector (I recommend this as a must have)

  • Carrying Case (if you travel a lot)

  • microSD Card (if you plan on getting your games digital)

  • If you want to play multiplayer with friends or family, you could get an extra set of JoyCons or even a Pro Controller, which I highly recommend.

  • The JoyCon takes up to 20 hours to run out of battery, and they recharge when attaching the cons to the console and docking it. If you are really worried for battery running out, there is an accessory that extends the charge of each JoyCon.

Regular Nintendo Switch! Buy an HDMI cable and compatible USB-C dongle (I got this one off of Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D6GXHKV/) so you don't need the docking station, and bring the original power adapter along. Now you can play the Switch on your hotel TV!

I've hooked mine up to almost every TV in hotels I've stayed at across the world. All the TV needs is an HDMI port and you're good to go (sometimes you gotta figure out how to change the input, not too hard though).

Edit: I also recommend getting this small stand. Great for airplanes, trains, rooms with a desk and no TV, etc.

Hi,

I am going to buy today a Nintendo switch and I am trying to see what accessories I should buy for it.

This is the list I currently have:

  1. Charge Block Pro Nintendo Switch Accessories)
  2. HORI Switch Wired Internet LAN Adapter
  3. HORI Compact Play Stand for Nintendo Switch Officially Licensed by Nintendo
  4. (Mumba Nintendo Switch case, [Heavy Duty] Slim Rubberized [Snap on] Hard Case Cover for Nintendo Switch 2017 release (Black))
  5. [Orzly Glass Screen Protectors compatible with Nintendo Switch - Premium Tempered Glass Screen Protector TWIN PACK [2x Screen Guards - 0.24mm] for 6.2 Inch Tablet Screen on Nintendo Switch Console]
  6. Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
  7. SanDisk Ultra 200GB microSDXC UHS-I Card with Adapter(SDSQUAR-200G-GN6MA)

Is there anything else that you would recommend or change from what I posted? From my understanding a cover for the dock is also recommended?

Regarding the memory, I am buying two physical games, however I must likely will be buying more digitally in the future (probably).

One of the things that give me a pause when I was searching for accessories is the Mumba case that I want to buy. I wish for the switch to have a good case just in case, but from I see the case won't allow other accessories while the switch is in it.

And is a grip necessary when in handheld mode?

    Thanks for the help.

The AA battery pack add on for the joycons actually improve ergonomics too. The best part is they’re super cheap!

You don’t have to have batteries in them to use them.

Tempered glass screen protector is a must IMHO.

You'll see many naysayers who say they've had their switches since day one, work at a concrete factory and cut diamonds with their switches and have no scratches.

Plain and simple, the switch screen is plastic. Plastic scratches easily. Well worth the $8 investment. I use the amfilm one, but the orzly has excellent reviews as well.

PowerA makes a nice dock that charges a pro controller and set of joycons.

One more thing, you'll want a microsd card. Even if buying all physical.
Get whichever is cheaper of these two.

I utilize a system from Nyko called Charge Block:

https://www.amazon.com/Nyko-Charge-Block-Pro-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B071X7C19P/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1519236239&sr=8-4

While I don't use it for my Switch stuff(haven't needed to get any yet), I do use it for my DS4 and they are excellent. This is what I recommend with anyone wanting a charging solution. It's great because it's one plug in and then after that it's drop it into the charger and go. No need to get the port just right. Less wear and tear.

It's what I would recommend =) And what I would get myself if I were to get a charger for the Pro Controller or Joy-Cons

I got this from Amazon for $10 at one point.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075FF6HDN

The lights are quite a bit bright on top, but other than that it's fine. Fits the NES controllers without issue

Edit: Looking at the other Power A Joycon docs, I never realized how close the bottom of the joycon comes to the base. Glad I got this one instead of the other I considered at the time (was getting ready for Mario Party)

u/MrMiyamoto · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

The primary reviewer of USB-A to USB-C cords' list of approved cables can be seen here:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/KF89JCHI0KT4/

Once you have a good cable, any of the popular, well-reviewed 2.4A USB to AC adapters should work just fine.

Or you could just go with the Nyko Power Kit for the Switch, which is essentially just that -- a reputable USB-C cable and 2.4A wall charger:

https://www.amazon.com/Nyko-Power-Kit-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B01NB0G478/

Note that neither of these solutions is as powerful as the official Switch AC adapter so they'll charge the Switch more slowly than it would.

u/FatBaldWhiteMan · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

That Dock is really portable - almost looks to small for my taste (too light), just like a small windblow might be able to push over the switch. I would feel a lot more comfortable with it laying flat.

I'll still hope HORI will make a nice high-quality portable dock.

u/mattgrattan · 3 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

dock scratches aren't a huge deal anymore, but the screen protector is a must as well as a carrying case if you're the on the go type the skull & co is my favorite and i've owned a few cases (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/gripcase-a-comfortable-case-for-nintendo-switch#/). There are tons of alternate charging methods (here's a cheap cable https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Single-Voltage-Charger-Nintendo-support/dp/B073PV6XQ1/ref=sr_1_3?s=amazon-devices&ie=UTF8&qid=1520976214&sr=8-3&keywords=nintendo+switch+charger#customerReviews) oh and welcome to the community!

I bought this about a year ago, and it works great. You can charge 4 joy con, or 2 joy con and a pro controller at once. Unfortunately you cannot charge 2 pro controllers at the same time. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0786BNC1L?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Nintendo AC Adapter
I got one question..

If I buy a official ac adapter from nintendo like the one from above will I be able to plug it in the EU Nintendo Switch and charge it normally without problems?

u/craigbezzle · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Does anyone think the official AA battery pack shown here will provide a good amount of grip to the back of the joycons? I sometimes find the Switch to be a tad uncomfortable for my hands when playing extended amount of handheld mode, and I think an extended or bulky grip would help. I've seen 3D printed grips that look great but I don't have access to those, and the added functionality of longer battery life definitely intrigues me

u/alittlebeat · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

My solution for this would be to just have the right joy con detached & sitting next to me in a joy-con charger in my room. 🤣

For me I have my Pro controller sitting in this PowerA controller + joy-con charger (thank you Target for having it on sale for $18 a while back) next to my bed so I use that to turn on my Switch. When I'm traveling I just put the joy con on a table next to me. (I got the Pro controller last year but now almost always use the SN30 Pro+ instead when docked)

But what all this makes me think is Nintendo could probably make bank on some type of small Switch remote to turn your Switch on & off, adjust volume, etc. Make it cheaper than a pair of joy-cons but handy for anyone using 3rd party controllers 🤔

u/RedJayRioting · 1 pointr/ipad

I ordered the official Nintendo Switch AC a few months before ever getting my iPad Pro. It’s always worked great for my Switch, but it works perfectly for my iPad. The charge speeds are awesome and I have no complaints.

u/TemptedTemplar · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

Boom. USB wall adapter and A to C cable. The car chargers as far as I know dont have removable cables, so you may want some thing like these which would mean one less cable to carry around.

As for the portable charger, we have #topusers working out which ones are best. Just stick around for a few days after launch and Im sure we will know by then.

u/Climax0 · 4 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Get these: https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Joy-AA-Battery-Pack-switch/dp/B071XXXK2X

Ignore the fact that it's a battery charger, these feel great to hold when playing with split Joy-Cons. Gives it that extra size making it easier to grip your hand over.

If you can try going to a GameStop or something, they likely have this on clearance for around $10 or less.

u/GoneWithLaw · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

Interested in getting a controller charger. The wiki lists the power a stand for charging two joy-cons, but I was wondering if anyone has experience with this model that charges a single joycon pair and a pro controller? Link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075FF6HDN/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_u-P.BbDV9BVKY

In any case, I'd like to know what the best charging setup is for a primarily docked switch with 2 pro controllers and 2 pairs of joy-cons.

u/ultranonymous11 · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

I have this one and it works great for exactly this sort of thing. And charging in tabletop too of course. Plugged into a portable charger on a plane is awesome.

u/EVM25 · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

I use 4 of these Got them on sale a while back. Super awesome since they connect and you only need one power source.

u/DownWithTheShip · 3 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

I'm not sure, but I don't think I would necessarily trust gamestop. I initially went there looking for an adapter for the dock. They didn't have any official ones but tried to sell me an unofficial one, telling me it would work with the dock. Then I looked at the small print on the package and it said it doesn't work with the dock.

Looking closer at the one you posted I don't think that will charge the dock. It might actually be the same one they tried to sell me. If you look at the description it really only tells you that it will power the switch. I don't see anything about the dock mentioned. In fact looking up the same product on Amazon i'm certain that it won't work for the dock.

My "official" Hori Joy Con charging station, like this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01MZAUN5E always has my joycons docked on it. The thing is that the lights stay on for ages or seem to come on at random.

Last night I put four almost fully charged JCs on it and it was still lit up in the morning. Anyone else noticed super long charging times or unrepresentative leds?

Edit: Is it possibly because it charges incredibly slowly when the Switch is in sleep mode?

I understand people are used to third party adapters but they are more commonly problematic and this is coming from someone who has been watching it happen for 20 years working with electronics. Look at the reviews for Nyko on Amazon those issues right at the top are common for cellphones. Many cellphones are not compliant either nor do most third party adapters use "fast" chargers or proper protection to save money and make a cheaper less safe product. Either way its the consumers choice to use an unlicensed product and not the manufactures fault if said product does harm.

u/say_no_to_shrugs · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

I'm sure it's fine, or you'd see plenty of complaints in the reviews. I don't think the controllers have the same sensitivity to power issue as the Switch does in docked mode. I've charged my Pro Controller from all sorts of sources and never had an issue (although I always make sure my cables and adaptors are Benson Leung approved).

I can personally vouch for the PowerA charger of this type, as I gave one to a friend for Christmas and he hasn't had any problems. It costs the same, but it doesn't have those sick fiberoptic LED bars! And it looks like the FastSnail is less bulky. I think you should spend the extra two bucks for the red one.

u/queuebitt · 5 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Switch charges well in handheld mode (not docked).

The controllers automatically charge when connected to the Switch. If Switch is plugged in they’ll charge to 100%. If not plugged in they’ll charge up to 50%.

Tabletop mode is tricky. The USB-C port is on the bottom and is blocked when using the built-in kickstand. There is a $20 charging stand that solves that problem.

Several cases can fit the whole Switch, including dock. AmazonBasic has a cheap one, but no designated space for physical games. Others available with a quick search.

You can charge with a power bank. See Power Bank Buying Guide for the Switch to help pick out the best one for your needs.

u/Envision17 · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

If you're not confident enough to fix it yourself, I'd say go for a new one (they have them on Amazon for ~$27). I'd also recommend sticking to official Nintendo ones, since a lot of 3rd party accessories (primarily docks) have been bricking Switches (plus 1st party AC Adapters aren't hard to find, again, ~$27 on Amazon).

https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Switch-AC-Adapter/dp/B01N7RUZ49

u/godis1coolguy · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

Do you know if this would work with the dock?

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N7RUZ49/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

I had imagined this was for plugging directly into the console and the description seems to indicate the same. Some comments seem to indicate this can also be plugged into the dock. I have. $25 credit from a shark week promo that’s only valid on a select number of things, so I might grab a $40 dock if I can get the power adapter for $2 after my credit. I just want to make sure this is compatible with the dock first though and not just for plugging directly into the switch. I’ve heard too many horror stories of bricking consoles with 3rd party docks, but this power adapter and the dock should both be first party.

u/MetallicFear · 3 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

you're gonna have to wait for the reviews to come out. But if you wanna be safe, I'd recommend buying adapters made for switch like this

u/theUnLuckyCat · 1 pointr/splatoon

I use the included wrist strap for a slightly better fit. You could also use the included grip for just the one JoyCon and still use them split. But if I were to buy an accessory, it would be a battery pack for both a heftier controller and the convenience of never having to charge the things attached to the Switch itself (cheap knockoffs also available).

Although the button layout on the Pro is a lot better, so it's great for that (and if there's ever any couch multiplayer).

u/spartyon1922 · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitchDeals

Have you had any experience with the power bank linked below? I really like the attachment to the back of the switch as well as the added USB-A port.

Your thumb will thank you , I really love to move my camera around while playing Zelda, and I hate using the joystick under the buttons on the joycons for games that require it.

u/ZensGamez · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

I'm looking at this one: https://www.amazon.com/FastSnail-Controller-Nintendo-Charging-Indicator/dp/B0786BNC1L

It's not an official one but it's the best option for my scenario and I have an official usb cable as well. Still worried though about what could happen

u/sean_999 · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Is this it [here on Amazon] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01NB0G478/ref=mp_s_a_1_1/130-1744743-2656306?ie=UTF8&qid=1521347600&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=nyko+switch+cable)?

If so, it has not so great reviews, though that seems mainly due to people thinking it can work with the dock. Again, I'd just save up $30 if you can and buy an extra Switch one. Or if you need lengthx check for a USB-C extender

Edit: This seems to be a promising extension

u/ApotheounX · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

For the 110/240 issue, that's a tough one. I'd assume the one that the switch comes with will be localized, and if the label on it says 110/240, you'll be fine ordering any adapter.

Like this one!
www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Switch-AC-Adapter/dp/B01N7RUZ49

If it says only one or the other, you'll need to be more careful and make sure you get the right one.

Edit: clarification about 110/240

u/tzamora · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch
  1. Yes

  2. I don't know I have never had a 3DS, but I guess the Nintendo account is the one you need to use.

  3. I believe you should go for a SD. You can save shovel knight and Snipperclipers fine without problems, but after that your switch will fill up too fast.

  4. Forget about 1,2 Switch awful game. Take into account that playing with ONE joycon is not nice. Is too small and really uncomfortable. You best option would be metal slug 3 is easy for people that don't play a lot, its just shot and kill everything you see. Play arms before buying it, some people like it, some people (like me) don't. I think is best Mario Kart.

u/JoshuaJSlone · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

Nope. It is a key part of the dock that it starts outputting via HDMI. Seems like what you want is a stand, like Hori's PlayStand, or if you want something the system can just sit on and be charging without extra effort of plugging in a cable Nintendo's charging stand or HORI's fancier one with more USB port.

u/weareallusers · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

I use this and this and it fits well enough. I can also fit my charger and joycon straps in the zipper part.

Only thing about that carrying case is mine had a pretty strong odor for a while, but it did go away.

u/colonelpatch · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

I keep hearing to "use the charger that came with your switch" but I can't get the exact one, so if I just buy a ac switch adapter like this one: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01N7RUZ49?pf_rd_p=46535598-d2e0-4bc4-8392-182d8c1e93fc&pf_rd_r=E28B4Z3AEMFB950XNBZR this will work just fine?

is what i'm talking about. cause the nintendo one is like $40 from the amazon website cause they only have them available from 3rd parties.

u/Mluke74 · 3 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Idk if this helps your investigation, but when my switch bricked, it still worked but it didn’t connect to the dock (original or 3rd party) I was however able to charge it using my pro controller usb (or any usb c I’d assume) connected to my computer. I was not able to transfer my saves as I needed to be connected to a AC adapter but Nintendo was able to successfully transfer my saves to a refurbished unit.

When I connected the switch to a 1st party dock, it would charge for half a second and disconnect leaving a blinking green light on the dock until I removed power to it. There was no video signal at all to my tv but everything still worked in handheld mode

Here is the dock my Switch was connected to when it was bricked

Here is a video I made of the issue

u/MetaRyan25 · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

It appears (from an image on the Amazon listing) that the charger supports AC 100V-240V, so it should work just fine on 220V. You would just need an outlet that American plugs can fit in.

I think they're expecting people to buy and use the new battery grips that launch with the game.

I think the product is silly and bad (using disposable batteries to charge a joy-con), but a comfort grip for separated joy-cons would be nice.

Edit: joy-con battery pack

u/caprimulgusAU · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

I use one of the generic ones off ebay/aliexpress that has two transparent rails in the middle, that light up. Each side holds a pair of joycons or a pro controller, so you can charge 4 joycons or 2 pro controllers, or a mix and match between.

I believe there are some models that can fit joycons to the side of the posts (instead of where the pro controllers sit), which means you can charge 4 joycons and 2 pro controllers at the same time. But my one cant.

But if you only have 4 joycons, if I were you, I would just rotate joycons on charge (on the Switch in the dock), and get a dock for the Pro Controllers. I like the Nyko Charge Blocks, which let you daisy chain multiple blocks together into one solid charging unit. You could do that for two pro controllers, or even got all the joycons as well, if you really want! And you can get them for other consoles too. That's what I would probably do if I had multiple pro controllers (and didn't have far far too many joycons! aha).

Mine is like this: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32910258763.html

u/jackgopack4 · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

looks pretty clear from the product listings that it is a brick with an unremovable cord

Edit: the box comes with one of these. So if you plan to leave that set up by your TV I would plan on getting another for travel/on-the-go

u/TheBigYello1isTheSun · 2 pointsr/Switch

I’d get the Nyko travel dock if I were you. It’s small and foldable and takes up way less space than the original dock. I have 2 portable docks, my main dock is in my bedroom, and outside of having the portable docks for travel, I find that the best use I will get from them is just leaving them hooked to the other TVs in my house so that I can dock to whatever TV I’m near without having to unhook the main one from my bedroom and plug it up elsewhere. The price went up a bit, but it’s worth it.

That would depend on your location, but if you're in the US, Amazon has them for $28.45. You can buy them at pretty much any retailer that would sell Switch accessories.

As I'm in the same situation, we will need to wait to the charger to arrive or wait for a Spanish person to show the charger.

We are hoping for a universal settings like (100 -240V 50-60Hz) as you can see in almost every laptop or phone charger.

if thats the case, it will work with this kind of [adapter]

It isn't as small as I would like, but someone could definitely make a smaller one if they removed some of the USB ports or arranged them so they aren't all on the same side of the adapter.

u/FoN925 · 0 pointsr/nintendo

A dock at $60?! Pfft! Try $90 MSRP!

I agree with you one million percent, though. There is NO way the dock is worth nearly $100 after tax.

I have a pre-order in for the Nyko Portable Docking Kit, which I was luckily able to get for $44.99, before the price went up to $49.99.

Honestly, I still think even $45 is high, but I'm much more willing to pay $45 than $90.

If we were dealing with literally any other company, I'd agree that the JoyCons may go down in price as technology improves, demand decreases and manufacturing costs decrease. Since we are talking about Nintendo, though, I really doubt they'll drop the prices... ever.

Just look at how much a new Wii U Pro controller still costs today ($50+), for a "dead" console. I can get a new DualShock 4 on Amazon for less than that every day, often around $39.99.

u/firechaos05 · 3 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

To keep it brief; Nintendo Switch draws about 8.9W at most while gaming in portable mode. Also, the Switch can only draw up to 2A due to its design.

A USB-A adapter (along with a USB-A to USB-C cable) supplies up to 5V 1.5A (7.5W) which is insufficient to charge while playing intensive games. The cable you linked is a USB-A to C, so presumably you were using a USB-A adapter which only supplies 7.5W. The Switch can draw more than this while in portable mode, which explains why your battery was still being depleted.

A USB-C adapter (along with USB-C to USB-C cable) supplies up to 5V 2A (10W) which is enough to slowly charge while gaming. (1) (2)

A USB-C adapter that supports USB-PD can supply up to 18W (voltage and current can vary) which can quickly charge the Switch while gaming. (1) (2)

This is the battery I use along with this stand which allows you to charge and play in tabletop mode. I use the USB 3.0 male to male cord that comes with the battery and it’s everything I need for long plane rides. Highly recommend both, the battery is a beast with power delivery. I used the wall adapter that comes with the dock or the charger that comes with the battery if I need to wall charge.

u/Phaedrus0230 · 1 pointr/Switch

The official charger is a one piece AC adapter with attached cable. It probably drops the 120v to 5v with a high amperage. I'd imagine it is 3A or higher to at least match the car charger. A little research shows usb tops out at 5v/5amps, or 25 watts. Working backwards from the 3 hour charge time, that means a 75wh battery. It looks like usb can also be used at 12v or 20v, but the information below makes me believe the switch is 5v.

This "officially licensed" car charger is 5v/3000mA. If I'm not mistaken, that equates to 15w. That's more than most usb ports, so using a usb-a to usb-c cable will typically have slower charging.

u/Lord_Vius · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

you dont need to use the grip or a pro controller.

Long as it's portable-mode only you have a number of options. It's only when it's docked that it becomes nintendo-only charger for the safety option.

Here's a list of USB-C chargers by /u/queuebitt. What I personally use when in portable is:

  • Ravpower's 60W 5-Port USB-C Power Delivery Wall Charger
  • Google Pixel 2 18W Power Delivery Charger (this is a smaller one which fits in my switch case)

Note that both my options are a little more expensive than a normal nintendo charger because I got them for specific reasons. The Ravpower 5 port one charges other stuff at the same time, while the google pixel 2 one, as I'm in the UK and thus, have three prong chargers, can fold itself up small enough to not stick out.

You could just go for an Amazon charger like this one which is pretty cheap (portable only, remember), although I generally don't like chargers where you can't remove the cable. Maybe this one by Anker, 18w PowerPort which is USB-C and has power delivery. Not sure if it comes with a cable. I would probably have got the UK version of this, had the prongs been able to fold itself in. But alas. :D

u/Bokoblin_ · 1 pointr/smashbros

Basically that charging port at the bottom can be anything you want it to be. So you can use a Nintendo Switch charging stand (Like this https://amzn.to/2SbyjE6) so you can use the port on the bottom on a table then get a simple usb c hub (like this https://amzn.to/2DUzDba) to connect the adapter. Unless you are a competitive player or grew up with the gamecube controller and have all your muscle memory built on that one controller just use the joycons or pro controller if you are going to be playing the game casually.

u/IkananXIII · 2 pointsr/splatoon

If I may make a suggestion, have you tried using the joycons on their own, without the grip? I found the grip uncomfortable as well, so I use the Joycons separately with these battery pack attachments to make them nice and fat and comfortable to hold. Aiming with a single joycon is so snappy and feels great. It's definitely something I think everyone should try at least once. I just use the battery packs to make the joycons more ergonomic, but you can also put one or two batteries in each one to adjust the weight to your liking. And obviously they'll charge the controller, though I've never found a need for that so I just use dead batteries to add some weight.

u/I_ONLY_SUPERSCRIPT · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

^(Also this.) ^(Having to change batteries sounds like it sucks but I prefer separate Cons over the grip, and it looks like it'll make them more comfortable.)

For the Pokèball Plus, off the top of my head the only one I know is this Most of of the other "Charging stands" are just that - stands. There have been some tests out there with powerbanks (admittedly, those are not wall chargers) that did not put out enough power to charge the Switch during gameplay. For example, this one from Ars.

> I thought the Switch's USB-C charging port would mean I could use any standard external battery pack to charge the system away from an outlet on long trips. Testing with the Jackery Titan S, though, I was only able to get a trickle charge of about 1 percent every six minutes. That charge was so weak that, during normal gameplay, the Switch actually died on me while it was still plugged in to the external battery pack.

> This could just be an issue of Voltage—the packaged wall outlet is rated for 15V/2.6A, while the battery pack is only rated at 5V/3A—or it might be an issue with confusing USB-C charging standards. In any case, don't expect perfect compatibility with third-party chargers.

A standard iPhone wall charger is rated at 5V/1A (aka 5 watts). Based on what Ars learned, this seems woefully insufficient to charge a Switch during gameplay. It should charge your Switch (slowly) while it is in sleep mode.

However, you shouldn't need something as powerful as the 15V/2.6A wall adapter that's included with the Switch. That's really powerful, I suspect because it also powers the dock, and because Nintendo wants it to charge the switch relatively quickly even during gameplay.

Nyko is selling a portable Switch wall charger which they advertise as letting you "charge while you play". It puts out 2.4A but unfortunately the voltage isn't listed. But I suspect it's likely around 5V. If I'm right, it's very similar to a standard iPad wall charger which is rated at 5.1V/2.1A.

So if you have an iPad wall charger lying around, it should be sufficient to charge your Switch during gameplay. If you only have an iPhone charger, you may need to invest in something a bit more powerful.

The only caveat to all this is what Ars said, their problem could have been to inconsistent USB-C standards, and not with the power output of the powerbank itself. I really wish Nintendo would just put out a list of 3rd party charging solutions they know work.
