I looked online and saw prices ranging from $300-500. Is there any difference between these consoles other than the skin?

The $300 base model of the Nintendo Switch (https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01LTHP2ZK/) does not include any games, but is still what you should most likely buy. More expensive models may have games bundled or free in-game currency (e.g. Fortnite), but they shouldn't be more than $350 (plus tax). At $360, you're not really saving any money, and anything more expensive than THAT is from a third party trying to make a quick buck. The console itself currently has few variations; most of your customization will depend on what color controllers you get with the console.

What type of accessories am I going to need?

This depends on your use case. I'd recommend getting a screen protector (https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01N3ASPNV/). If you expect to bring the Switch out of the house a lot, also get a case (https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01MR63I6F/). Anything else, like special controllers (https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B0748S3GXG/) or a dock cover (https://www.etsy.com/listing/560319070/), is largely unnecessary right now; look into them when you find you need extra joy-cons (https://smile.amazon.comdp/B078GZM4H8/) or a tabletop stand (https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01N9RTMWS/) for your Switch. In the end, you should not be spending more than $400 for the Switch, one game, and core accessories.

As for games, so far I planned on buying Smash Bros, Let's Go Pikachu, and One's Justice. Can you recommend any other games? I was never into Zelda but hear the new game is very good.

How old is your kid? Super Mario Odyssey (https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01MY7GHKJ/) is fun, and has a great co-op mode if you want to play together. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is also always a blast (https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01N1037CV/). I'm also a huge fan of Splatoon 2 (https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01N9QVIRV/), but it's probably better for older kids because it requires more dexterity. There's lots of games to recommend, but it'll help to know what your kid already likes... or what you want your kid to like ;)

Side note: To play online, you need Nintendo Switch Online (https://www.nintendo.com/switch/online-service/). It's $20 a year for one ACCOUNT, or $35 a year for 8 accounts. Each account also has separate save files, if multiple people will be playing on the same Switch. Smash Ultimate and Mario Kart both have online modes, but Splatoon's primary game modes are online-only.

As someone who didn’t like the game, let me try to explain why, and why my husband loved it.

For me, part of the heart and soul of Pokémon is the battling, catching, and training. It seemed inconsequential, but the loss of being able to weaken my target, put it to sleep, and ensure capture sapped some joy from the experience. This wasn’t an active burning joy, but more the quiet joy of a well traveled routine.

When it came down to it, I’d fell in love with the pattern and the experience. You find a good Pokémon that can put an opponent to sleep, that can bring its health low without killing it, and ideally still deal with the random Pokémon you don’t want to capture. Then you begin the hunt, which was little more than random scrounging through grass hoping the next battle would be the one. This has become one part of the core mechanics for me and I didn’t even entirely know why.

Training my Pokémon had become similarly routine and beloved. Find just the right spot with the right Pokémon for experience and effort values. Do a bit of research, and then click my way through the levels like an idle clicker game. The investment was slow, but one and done, and it paid off. Let’s Go, however, presented a new idea, feeding my Pokémon with Pokémon candy acquired by capturing more Pokémon. It doubled down on the capture aspect, but with a technique I found tedious and unengaging.

There is no guarantee of capture in Let’s Go. You can always flee before the third escape to ensure you don’t break a chain, but if you find a shiny and you miss three times it might run from you. You can’t stop it from running, and while this doesn’t stop you from getting an Abra, it can stop you getting that Abra. A minor distinction, but one that made the hunt feel like a random lottery in a very unpleasant way. Finding them became easy, capturing them became hard. I preferred it the other way, where finding them took time, but capture was a near certainty once you had.

Battling trainers was, of course, mostly the same. You’d send out a good counter and fight their Pokémon.

For me it became about agency. A course of action that I set out to complete was a success in either game. In the traditional games I control every variable except for what I find, in Let’s Go you control every variable except which one you find you end up capturing. Training became more of a capture stream than a well thought out strategy, simply park it and capture everything then feed candies to your favorites.

However, my husband loved the games. The removal of worrying about IVs too much, the casual approach to capturing, and the mostly unchanged battle mechanics against trainers, meant that the more casual take was exactly what he wanted. He didn’t care about catching a specific Abra, or that training was a much easier affair but with less planning. That’s not the gamer he is, and he just wanted an Alakazam, the fact that candies could be farmed to make it a good Alakazam regardless of IVs was ideal for him.

So:

• If you don’t care about how you catch Pokémon, and it’s OK to shift the control factor from 100% capture to 100% finding, you won’t necessarily be disappointed.
  
• If you don’t mind a more casual approach to training and battling, and that wild Pokémon are not battlable, you won’t necessarily be disappointed.
  
• If you’re looking for the depth of training, raising, and bonding with specific Pokémon, you may find this a positive or negative game.
  
  My husband loved this game. It was “Pokémon lite”. It was perfect because he didn’t have to struggle to find a Pokémon, he just had to be patient and chain it. I didn’t love it because I had to be patient and chain it instead of capture the one I found specifically.

Bunnings and Waldecks are the majors, although keep an eye out for various plant sales run by local councils as well as seasonal warehouse plant sales, often advertised on social media. Worth searching for nurseries in your local area on google maps if you want to try and compare with more local options.

Riot Art & Craft is a major chain in malls that would have this sort of stuff, you may also find some of these items at the other big craft chains like Spotlight or Lincraft. Jacksons for painting / drawing supplies.

Fancy IGAs (e.g 2nd Ave Mount Lawley, Taylor Rd Nedlands) - very extensive BBQ sauce ranges.

>Mild peppers. Not capsicum, but stuff like ortega or poblano (anaheim peppers?), mild chiles like for stuffing for a chile relleno. All I can find are "chilis" which seem to encompass all peppers in one broad stroke while also excluding mild ones somehow?

The major grocery stores are hit and miss and will stock these sorts of peppers sometimes, but not all year round. The larger asian grocery chains mentioned above may be able to assist as well as the smaller greengrocers / fruit and vegetable stores found in most malls. I'd suggest you grow your own if you have the space, they grow super easy in the Perth climate and will provide you with more peppers than you would ever need 9-10 months of the year.

>Chipotle. Powder form is less ideal, but it's better than nothing.

The Spice Wagon in Morley (The market this is inside, Coventry has a MASSIVE range of multicultural food shops and restaurants in addition to this place), you should be able to find Chipotle in Adobo at any of the fancier IGAs or at some of the asian grocery stores already mentioned.

Coles and Woolworths have this (Ocean Spray brand) all year round - albeit in a jar rather than a can.

All major supermarkets should have at least one variety in the dairy case with all the other milk (separate with the other refrigerated misc milks) - often only available in a 600ml bottle though.

>Marinated mushrooms. In the USA, i get them in jars or at the olive bar.

I've seen them in major supermarket in jars / cans, may be referred to by the french term (champignon).

Seasonal fruit that doesn't tend to get imported from other countries, these are often only available in the summer (November - April at the most).

There are a few (two in Subiaco alone - here and here), however keep in mind that unless you want something really niche the larger asian grocery stores will often have what these two stores stock at a much lower price.

  I prefer the GCN controller myself, and generally they play with them at the pro level. The Gamecube adapter and controllers were released a few days ago, so you can get those now. Adapters are 20, controllers are 30 a piece. If you have old GCN controller around, they will work as well.
  
  I would recommend getting a Switch Pro if you plan to get other Switch games, it is really a great controller. There's a smash themed Pro controller that you can still get link it's only $5 more than a regular pro controller. Aside from aesthetics, it works exactly the same as other pro controllers.

  Switch works but in portable mode and connected to a TV. It also has a stand on the back so you can play it on what is referred to tabletop mode. Even in portable mode, you can use any controller. In the case of GCN controllers, the adapter connects to the dock so you can't do it natively. The Switch itself only has a USB-C. I assume that you can get an USB-C adapter to be able to connect the GCN Adapter but I haven't tried it myself.
  
  Could I use my laptops screen it has a full size hdmi port? (Dell G7 15)
  
  I don't know much about this, but HDMI ports in laptops are usually just HDMI out, so I would assume it won't work. If you can connect anything else there and display it on screen (another console, blu ray player, etc) I don't see why it wouldn't work.

I really like Marth because of M2K and Zain. He's so flashy and fun to watch someone getting pivot tippered or Ken combo'd. God Marth is so awesome. Atleast in Melee.
  
  I'm not into the competitive scene so I don't know anythign about tiers and rankings, but I do enjoy sword fighters. Marth is still fun and probably the easiest to learn, though he is not as good as he used to be in Melee. Lucina is his echo and the main differences are that she is a bit faster and her sword doesnt have more power in the tip.
  
  Other than that, it depends on your fight style. Link and Toon Link are versatile, Ike is slow but powerful (think Bowser/Ganondorf), Roy plays fairly differently from Marth this time around and not as enjoyable imo.
  
  My personal rankings from those in Smash 4 are - Ike, Marth, Toon Link, Lucina, Cloud, Link, Roy, Mii Fighter
  Corrin and Shulk are technically sword fighters, but they stab rather than swing for smash attacks so they feel a bit different. Shulk is probably the hardest one to learn out of all these, because his neutral B basically boost different categories. Corrin has great range and a solid counter, but again, doesn't really feel like a sword fighter to me.

Captain Toad Treasure Tracker & Yoshi’s Crafted World are both excellent entry-level games. Super Mario Odyssey is also an absolute masterpiece, and it definitely is relatively easy to start, but does become more challenging over time. Great value for money though, you could sink 100 hours into it and not fully “complete” it. As for the console, it can ‘switch’ between handheld mode, with the controllers attached to the sides of it’s touchscreen, and tv mode, where it sits in a dock and you detach the controllers and use them apart from the rest of the console. Nintendo have also just released a new version, called the switch lite, that has fixed controllers, can only do handheld mode and is also a bit smaller and cheaper. Would be perfect for using in the hospital.

You can also buy all the games online on the console, but you’ll usually find better prices for them on Amazon. Though there are plenty of games in the under $20 category that don’t have physical copies, lots of hidden gems, but yeah for the bigger releases like Mario it’s going to be much easier to get them on Amazon, especially if you only have limited internet access.

I really need your help. I was thinking of gifting someone a nintendo switch after a few months but I know little to nothing about video games or consoles. I didn't grow up playing video games and have never owned a console. I was hoping you guys could help answer some of my questions and help me.

Now if you want the best price you're going to want to order direct from Amazon.co.jp (not through a third party seller) but as of now the Switch is entirely sold out. In order to avoid this download the browser Extension called 'Keepa' ( https://keepa.com ), it helps you track prices and stock availability so you can be alerted to when it comes in stock. Because they're so popular they go out of stock pretty much as soon as they come in. So what I did is also download an Auto-refresh plugin for Chrome and leave the two pages open and refreshing every 10 seconds to see when they come in stock by Amazon, it was a long process, but when one came in stock I was finally able to snag it. Who knows, maybe you can too. I hope this guide is helpful.

You aren't going to find a Switch for less than $300 + tax. The best deal you can get is to find one with a free game bundled in for the same price....I think the pokemon ones have sold out but most retailers are selling a $300 Switch bundle with Mario Kart.


There are a few more floating around that have Smash, Diablo, maybe one or two others I'm forgetting.


EDIT:OP, it looks like Amazon is still taking orders on the Pokemon bundle....it doesn't really save you much money though, as it costs $399 before tax. It does include a special poke ball controller, a themed dock and joy cons, and the game though.

There's not a big difference between Let's Go Pikachu\Eevee other than the starter Pokemon. Sword\Shield isn't out yet, but it sounds like there will be significant differences in the gyms you battle.

If you're not familiar with Pokemon the Let's Go games will ease you in to the series. Just be aware that the Pokemon catching mechanics aren't what appears in the regular games. Normally you have to weaken a Pokemon before trying to catch it instead of just chucking balls until they stay in one.

I'd recommend starting out with Let's Go Eevee for two reasons. One, it's $30 right now. That's hard to beat and much easier to swallow if you aren't sure you're going to like the series. Two, Eevee gets access to a bunch of different types of attacks where Pikachu is pretty much all electrical. Eevee will help you learn type advantage better, which is important in the regular games.

I don't know much about console gaming but there's also the Switch Lite for $199 on Amazon. Apparently there's some games that you can't play on that one so I'd check, and there aren't detatchable joycons, but if $100 is the difference and you wanted to technically "keep" your gift that might also an option.

He should have talked to you before making such a big purchase but I wouldn't return it and lie about it either. Eventually he will start wondering where the Switch is and asking you about it. If you think returning it is the best option, sit down and talk with him about it. Maybe you can plan so that you can return the switch but set aside money each month as a purchase towards the Switch until you can purchase it guilt-free. Good luck!

Regarding other games, you should definitely check out the Nintendo area for more information on games.

As for IT software, I always recommend typing courses. People take them for granted but it’s such an important aspect to all things in the world. I do not know much AI as that’s not my specialization. I really think starting off small with teaching and advancing. Coding languages are great. If virtual school interests you, I’m sure your state offers programming courses via their system ( I know mine does ).

Software is constantly changing and anything taught now could easily change in 5-10 years.

Games can be changed in and out but imo BOTW is the best game on the switch and Mario Kart 8 is loads of fun. I personally do not have a pro controller, mainly because I play strictly handheld but from what I have been told it is a must for docked gameplay.

Edit: In the future you are going to need a SD card. Especially if you are going the Digital route, again personally I prefer physical and the at of collecting the games but that is me.

As far as Amazon goes, best advice is to be on the ball. You can go HERE to click the [Email Me] button, ensuring that you're updated when preorders go live. A solid guess is that it will go live after the Jan 12th presentation, but you better have it now to be sure.

As for in-store, I'm calling Gamestop one of these days to see if they already take pre-orders. People have reported that SOME stores are taking pre-orders now, and others will obviously wait for the Jan 12th presentation. So if you want a midnight release or in-store release, make sure to call some places now just to be sure.

As a parent of two girls, I'm constantly having this conversation about the difference between want and need. It's not that I'm trying to be a buzz kill, but I'm trying to instill in them the economic savvy to know if something is necessary or frivolous. Most of the time, they realize that what they thought they needed is really something they just wanted.

So, in compliance with your rules, I went through my wishlist and had a want/need debate on every item, to figure out what I really want. I threw out anything with any practical, helpful, occupational, or educational benefits. We're going for pure frivolity here. And since you didn't set a price limit, and I don't have any delusions about winning, we're going to go with the thing I want the most, but definitely don't need. I'm a 42 year old man, there's no way I'd ever talk myself into buying that...but I still want it.

Also, I realize I'm a bit of a statistical outlier here, but I kinda like the potato.

First, I just checked Dixons @ Gatwick Airport and the Switch there sells for £269.00 that's only 99p less than Amazon UK.

Smyths has a deal for £319 including Mario + Rabbids and Rayman Legends.

If you buy from Argos Ebay it can go as low as £251.99 with checkout code for the Argos Ebay store PAYDAY10.

Both currys and even the nintendo store got deals with bundles.

In comparison the Switch in Dubai costs AED 1,325.00 that's currently about £255 which is in line with Argos Ebay discount at the moment. Now you need to consider exchange fees. If you were to exchange GBP to AED in order to get the Switch, using Travelex for example, in order to get AED 1,325.00 you would be paying about £270. Not worth the hassle unless you already got loads of that currency already and need to get rid of, but if you are travelling to Dubai and being so expensive you will need every bit of it XD.

As for region, no it's not locked.

I haven't unboxed my Switch yet but there are 3 games I am taking with me, Zelda, Super Mario and Mario Kart. I am also bringing a powerbank, although if you are travelling with Emirates you will be fine with power sockets. I will play Zelda as much as I can in order to disctract me as much until I feel the need for sleep.

About 1-2 Switch. I'll tell you for the third time that it doesn't matter if it's a "good game". The only thing that matters is that people are willing to buy it, and obviously they are. No amount of temper tantrums is going to convince those hundreds of thousands of people to return the game because "it's a piece of shit and should've been a pack-in". The Switch is sold out, 1-2 Switch is a success, Nintendo was entirely correct in pricing it as they did.

As for all those dust collecting consoles. I can't find any here or here or here or here. Turns out that the Switch sold well pretty much everywhere. Sure low-wage countries or countries that got screwed on the price aren't going to sell out, but that doesn't change the fact that the Switch is still supply limited in almost all markets, including the most important ones.

Amazon has a very large network of registered third party sellers. If an item is out of stock with Amazon, they will often present the next cheapest option. When the Switch was really hot for example, it was constantly sold out. There were always some available though at large markups.

I keep seeing the Switch listed at different prices for seemingly the exact same thing. For example, on Amazon I'm seeing it listed for $359. With Pokémon Home being announced and a decent, sale, I finally pulled the trigger.

This was a strategic move. As you said, they made a lot of money off their cheaper handheld systems. They know this. So instead of making another 3DS, they released this version of the Switch for that market. Instead of playing dinky 3DS game boy games, it plays games like Witcher 3 and BOTW. It's the next evolution for that market, and it's going to make an impact this holiday season.

Long-term, I don't know. All I know is that in the next 6 months with Pokemon and China deals, Nintendo will do well.

Technically you'd have to declare it with customs, meaning you have to pay taxes on it. If you leave the box in the US it's easier to maintain that you already owned it.

...but I don't think it's that much cheaper to get a Switch in the US even if import fees are not a factor. The Switch is about 300 dollars before taxes. Let's assume a sales tax of about 7% which takes it to 320 dollars. That's about 263 euros. After which you'll have to buy a European power brick (retail price 30 euros), taking the price right back up to 293 euros, which is pretty damn close to the price of 299 euros that Amazon is asking. And a Switch bought in the EU has a warranty of at least 2 years, while a US Switch has a warranty of just one.

All in all: don't get one in the US, it's going to be equally expensive if you get it in the EU and you'll have some extra perks.
