I was the same way. In fact, when I first found out I was pregnant I was certain I was going to just formula feed from the start. But the more reading I did about breastfeeding, breastmilk and the benefits for both my baby and myself I decided I was going to give it a go. I still stocked some bottles and formula in case things didn't work out for whatever reason. I think having that stuff actually helped me push through the hardest parts of early breastfeeding, because I knew I had backup and was determined to not have to use it unless it was due to a supply issue. I was determined to push through the discomfort! A lot of the stuff you'll read will say if it hurts, you're doing it wrong. That's not always the case! First of all, your nipples aren't used to this kind of work load! Babies nurse A LOT in the early days. It can feel like you don't do much except nurse! So it can take a little bit for them to get used to this. Also, your lo can be born with a pretty small mouth, making it hard to get a deep latch. Mine had a tiny mouth! Our latch and technique were perfect, but she had a shallow latch. By week 3 we were totally on track, it became second nature to nurse her. She had grown, my boobs were used to things and it became a really enjoyable experience. I was obsessed with whether her latch was right those first 3 wks and watched about a million videos on latching, had an appt with the LC I saw during recovery and the hospital and read more stuff. I was assured our latch was great and to try to stop being so worried about everything. It's really hard not to worry! Is this right? Is she getting enough milk? Is this cluster feeding? Whyyyy do my boobs hurt?! But seriously, at 3wks something magical just clicked into place. Cluster feeding is going to suck! But it is necessary to build up your supply! Comfort nursing is real too, and your baby will need lots of comfort in the early days. Things that got me through those first few weeks:
-my husband set up a snack station on my nightstand. He had fiber one bars (trust me, you'll need them lol), fiber one+protein bars, granola bars, nutrigrain bars, pb crackers etc and every time we woke to nurse he got me fresh water. You need to stay hydrated!! And it's easy to get weak, nursing can be really draining! Having a snack nearby that you can eat with one hand is super helpful
-Water. Lots and lots of water.
-When we'd wake up in the night for feedings I'd nurse on one side, then my husband would change her diaper and hand her back to me to finish the other side. The break up would help wake her up and helped make sure I was never TOO engorged. I never had to get out of bed unless absolutely necessary, which was also a huge help.
-Philips Avent thermal gel pads I kept these in the freezer, they are big and bulky but omg they felt wonderful!! You can also warm them.
-Lansinoh Gel Soothies i kept these in the fridge for adding cooling. They were great.
-Lansinoh! Lots of it! I used it at the start and end of every session in the beginning. Let your boobs air dry a little too from time to time. My boobs were constantly out those first few weeks. My husband called this phase "sun's out, guns out!"
It's really hard not to worry or be worried about it. It's hard work! It's a lot more than I ever thought it would be. But here we are at 1yr and almost 2wks still going strong! I wouldn't change a thing. I feel blessed to have had a pretty easy time with this, and to have had a great supply all this time. I am absolutely in awe at how all of this works, and so happy that I stuck with it. You'll need support, but with a good system this can be an amazing experience. I keep saying weaning is going to be harder on me than it will be on my daughter! And always remember, if breastfeeding doesn't work out - you aren't a failure. Formula is there for a reason, it feeds babies and helps them thrive! At the end of the day, a fed baby is the way to go. If breastfeeding is not working, then switch and don't let anyone try to make you feel guilty about it. It's none of their business anyways how you feed your baby. All that matters is your health and happiness and your baby's health and happiness. Best of luck!!!

I love this list, I kept thinking "ditto!" with almost everything you wrote! Because I can't help myself, here is some of my feedback on some of those products:

For boob cream- I loooove the Motherlove Nipple Cream. The Earth Mama Angel Baby one was really grainy to me, and I'm not a big fan of the cocoa butter smell (to each their own!). The Motherlove cream saved my nipples those first few weeks and I still use it after a long pumping session.

Leak management- gurl I feel you on being leaky! I am SO leaky. I love the nighttime Bamboobies, they're the only ones that work for me (and I have to switch them out three times a day). The downside is they're pretty obvious through clothing, so when I have to go out of the house I'll pop a disposable lansinoh one in there instead. But Bamboobies all the way!

Leak Collection!- Yes! The Milkies Milksaver I have has been great at catching the ~1oz I leak from the non-nursing side. Now that Miss V and I have more of a breastfeeding pattern that involves her only eating from one side per session I'm going to try out a Haakaa Silicone Pump to see if the suction will draw out even more ounces from the neglected boob.

Extra Pump Parts- NeneSupply on Amazon is a Spectra pumping girl's best friend, especially for hard-ish to find and expensive spare Spectra parts.

Nursing Bras- They're expensive but I'm a total Bravado fanatic. I'm a big girl and they carry a wide variety of sizes, even for the much bigger bust sizes. And they recently released this hands free pumping attachment that, the few times I've experimented with it, was freaking awesome. I hope it continues to be awesome when I go back to work!

Oh! I forgot one of my favorite pumping accessories! The Pumpin' Pals Super Shields have made a difference in my output but are also a thousand times more comfortable that regular flanges. Plus you can recline while pumping without spilling breastmilk everywhere! I was gifted these by a friend at my shower and I was skeptical about them living up to the Amazon reviews hype but I am definitely happy to have them.

I exclusively pumped for 4 months while my son was in the NICU. I was happy to be able to give him breast milk, but it is very time consuming. At the beginning I pumped 10x a day for about 20
minutes each time to get my supply up. After 2-3 weeks I dropped to 8x a day, and then a few weeks after that 7x a day. I did have to increase the time I pumped to 30 minutes each session when I dropped to 7x.

Pumping bras are ESSENTIAL. The ones I liked the most are from a brand called Hofish on amazon, but they are discontinued 😢 This one looks the most similar. I didn’t care for the Simple Wishes pumping bra - it was too restrictive and kind of difficult to get the flanges in.

At first I was washing all the pump parts after every session. Then I heard a tip to just put all the parts in a plastic bag in the fridge between sessions and it was awesome. It saves so much time!

I liked the Lansinoh breast milk bags the best because they can truly lay flat for freezing. I would lay the bags in the freezer compartment of my fridge and save up like 1-2 days worth. Then I would put those in a gallon freezer bag with the dates labeled and put that in my chest freezer. If you don’t have a chest freezer yet, I would recommend it because it can store frozen milk for up to a year (whereas the freezer on your refrigerator is only 6 months).

I would also recommend the app Pump Log. You can track each pumping session and they send you reminders when it’s time to pump again. It’ll even track your freezer stash for you.

No, don't squeeze it out. Not that you'd do any harm if you did but you also wouldn't relieve anything by doing so. If you're leaking and it's getting your bra and shirt wet, then just stick a nursing pad into your bra. Here are some good disposable (which are nice when your milk is still getting regulated because I feel like they absorb more) and here are nice cloth resuable ones for later when there's not so much leaking. The cloth ones would be good for you now as you're likely not leaking a lot during pregnancy (if you're leaking or not).

(You'll likely want to wash those reusable ones in fragrance free detergent with the rest of the baby clothes. We just use fragrance free detergent for everything. Also, fragrance free =/= unscented. "Unscented" is apparently just another scent.)

And just in case you're worried, leaking during pregnancy is not an indicator of later breastfeeding success. If you don't leak, it doesn't mean that you aren't producing milk or anything. And if you do leak, you're not going to use up your supply before baby gets here.

Anything you leak now is just colostrum, a sort of pre-milk substance. It's very healthy for baby and is all they need until your real milk comes in a few days after giving birth. You won't use it all up if you leak now nor do you need to pump and save it in routine situations.

2. Nursing bra - I bought these from amazon: 3 for $21.99!. I'm not sure if they're quality bras or not but I've been using them for 4 months and they're great so far! But I'm also not 36DD, so not sure if they'll work for you. Otherwise, I got some through local Trading up facebook pages.
   
   
3. Nipple creams - samples from hospital and still on my first tube outside samples. I'm still using them at 4 months, but not nearly as much as before. My tube's from a friend, but I don't think it was that much.
   
   
4. Nursing pads: I leaked so much! Started off with these Medela ones and will transition into these washable ones because nursing pads were getting expensive.
   
   
5. Never bought any nursing tops. I have cami that I've used, but I mostly just pull up my shirt. I nurse with the baby right in front of me so everything's pretty covered.
   
   
6. Pump bra - Never bought one. I cut slits in an old sports bra that's now a bit small for me. It works perfectly! I can pump hands free at work.
   
   
7. Food - I don't think the extra food costs more. If anything we've saved money on food now because we don't go out to eat anymore.
   
   I also went back to work at 6 weeks. It sucked. I'm usually away from baby about 10 hrs a day. I guess you just get used to it after a while... Hope this helps!

I was/am in the exact same boat - first kid, limited funds, starting from scratch, going through reviews and prices drove me insane. It took me probably three months to get my registry together, and, even then, I am still switching things up, lol.

What we have bought ourselves that fit our tight budget:

Graco Comfy Cruiser Travel System. We had already decided to go with that car seat, given that it seems to be the top-rated budget option, and the stroller ended up being a much-needed bonus. We go on walks a lot, so it works for us. If you don't need the stroller, the seat itself is, I think, only ~$100.

The Pack N Play, which I've heard from literally everyone and their mother is almost a necessity.

Because we don't have an IKEA near us to get our hands on a swanky $99 crib, we bought this DaVinci crib. We still only ended up paying $100 for it, as we found it on sale, however, we would have paid the $200 for it, given that the reviews are good, and, when compared to some other cribs that cost $400 and up, the price isn't bad at all.

As for the rest of the registry, we have on there a Moby wrap (affordable baby wearing, yay!), nail clippers, outlet plugs, nursing pads, a wipes case, a baby tub, baby wash, assorted crib sheets, waterproof crib sheets, Pack N Play mattress, and sheets to go with, crib mattress (we actually bought this one when we found it on sale for $20, and it's just fine), receiving blankets, dirty diaper bags (because we aren't getting a diaper pail, just a small can with a seal-able lid), changing pad, and a cover to go with, pacifiers, Dr. Brown's Gia Nursing Pillow, a bottle brush, bottle warmer, thermometer, booger sucker, camera to monitor the baby, and a few other assorted things that I couldn't really find a definitive "best in class" for, so pick at your own discretion: diaper bag, swaddles (although I've read good things about the Summer Infant brand), bottles (we're going with Phillips Avent), a bouncer (we got this one), and a swing.

I agonized over this stuff for what felt like forever, lol, so I hope it helps you and saves you some hair-pulling. It's all so overwhelming!

My first recommendation is to check to see if she has a baby registry. New parents need/want LOTS of stuff, and while all gifts are appreciated, having someone help cover the essentials always made us really happy! Some of my favorite gifts were for things we needed like extra bottles, bassinet sheets, and giftcards to Amazon.

Now, to your question - here are some top items we've used with our new baby:

• If she's breastfeeding then nipple balm, nursing pads (I like the Lansinoh disposable ones), cooling pads for your bra for when you're engorged, a Haaka breastmilk pump/saver, and nursing tank tops.
  
• An activity mat
  
• High contrast books and toys to look at
  
• Extra changing pad liners
  
• Dreft stain remover (GREAT for poop stains!)
  
• Burp cloths (you can literally never have too many. We love these from aden + anais.)
  
  
  With the exception of the activity mat, you can really never have too many of the above items!

Congrats on the baby! I’m 3 months out. Here’s what worked for me. Please know that every woman and baby is different though!

For the first 3-4 weeks my baby ate only from the breast. This was to ensure that my body knew to make enough milk. Yes, it meant me waking up sometimes every 30 min - 1 hour for cluster feeds. Yes, it was so fucking tough on my nipples. (If her nipples hurt, I highly recommend these gel pads.). I almost quit multiple times. But as some others have posted, it’s really important in those early weeks to have baby on breast each time baby wants to eat so that your wife’s body knows to make enough milk. My husband helped by bringing the baby to me, handling diaper changes, and making sure that I was eating and drinking enough (this is important!! Her body needs the proper fuel to make milk.). We also had support from his mom who would hold the baby while we got in a nap for an hour or two. Once baby got back up to his birth weight and I felt like we were doing well with breastfeeding (around 3-4 weeks), I pumped about an hour after a feed in the early morning, which is when milk production is at the highest. Just make sure to leave around an hour between pump session and next feed. Then, the next night my husband fed the baby with this milk and I got up and pumped. It sucks, but it’s important for supply issues. Not pumping when baby is fed can lead to decreased supply and also potentially clogged ducts and mastitis from being too full of milk.

With regards to introducing a bottle, we started at 3-4 weeks. Not too early so as to avoid nipple confusion and bottle preference and not too late to avoid bottle refusal. We started with Dr. Brown’s level 1 nipple, but he was leaking milk out of his mouth and got a bit fussy at the breast, so we switched to preemie nipples to reduce the milk flow rate. Here’s a helpful chart on nipple flow rate.. It all depends on the flow rate from your wife too - if she has a strong letdown, slow letdown, etc. Hope the best for you guys!

So I had oversupply issues for a really long time and leaked like crazy all the time. My son just turned 17 months and it wasn't until the last couple weeks that I could get away without constantly using breast pads. Stuffing performs cloth diapers in my top was fine if I was at home but clearly I needed a better option when going somewhere. I tried all sorts of kinds, both reusable and disposable, trying to figure out what would hold up to my exceptionally leaky boobs. I never thought I would be so excited about breast pads but I LOVE the ones that ended up working for me. I never once had them leak and there were times they were so full they probably weighed more than my kid's wet diapers.

Not the original commenter, but I bought these pads and they're awesome. They seem a tad big, in terms of the diameter, but I like them. Also weirdly, the ones I received are flat circles and don't have the pleat like in the photos. So. Idk. But I like them anyway haha

Nursing pads are also the exact same as resuable cotton pads. I bought these and they are great! I use them to remove my makeup with micellar water and to remove facemasks. IMO, they're the best of both worlds when you compare them to cotton rounds and washcloths. The mesh bag always untied itself when I washed them, so now they just get thrown into the wash like everything else. Totally worth the investment since I have washed them a bunch of times and they are still as good as new!

I assembled this cart for our living room, and I thought y'all would appreciate it. We also considered naming it the T&A cart, but "boob & butt" won out.

• Cart: 3-tier rolling cart from Target. I went with this instead of the ever-popular Raskog from IKEA because our local IKEA didn't have the colors we wanted in stock.
  
• Butt: diapers, wipes, IKEA hedgehog toy for diaper time entertainment, Pueen pump dispenser (yasss, Pueen) and CVS premium cotton squares for water-only cleanups, dog poop bags and dispenser for poopy diapers, tube of Vaseline as meconium shield and Boudreaux's butt paste
  
• Boobs: rolled receiving blankets to use as burp cloths, Bebe Au Lait nursing cover for when we got company, Lanisoh lanolin for da nips, Lanisoh disposable nursing pads, Bamboobies washable nursing pads, Lanisoh soothies gel pads, Avent comfort breast shells, bottled water, and Graze snacks in the back. When baby arrives I'll store my Kindle here, too.

If you don’t have them, I HIGHLY recommend Soothies Gel Pads , and refrigerating them. They’re reusable for a couple of days. I also loved this Nursing Balm.


I distinctly remember the desperate loneliness of being literally attached to another human while stuck in one place for hours on end, often crying at the latch. Promise it gets better and for me, it was worth it, still BF’ing at 8 months old and it’s awesome.

I got the Madela pump in style- tote bag at my shower and LOVE it. Babies r u sells all the pump parts and accessories how ever I use the same ones over and over b/c I wash them right afterwards and put them back in my bag. I can fit all my pump parts, bottle of water, snacks, magazines..etc in the tote badg The pump itself sits in the coner of the bag and measure probably 4x3 inches (a cube). Its not noisy at all but it does have the distinct pumping sound. I second getting a hands free bra. This has be a god send. I work full time, and I can take my laptop to the lactation room, put on the bra and pump away and still can work. Even for home I can do my crafts or eat or flip throught the channels. I like the idea of saving money and making one, but this bra is strapless so at work all I have to do is lift my shirt to put it on. I dont have to take it all the way off to put the sports bra on.

Other supplies:

microwave sterilize bags for your pump parts I still wash them with hot soap and water when I get home, but this cleans them for the 3 times I pump at work each day
*nursing pads some women have to wear them all the time, I only wear them at night because I go 6 hours without feeding her. I see that you are lucky enough to be a SAHM but Ill leave all this up for those us that have to work and need some suggestions.

It is so hard at the beginning! My first never latched well and we ended up exclusively pumping and eventually switching to formula at 10 weeks. We had to do what we could to save our sanity.

My second ended up having a tongue and lip tie. It was so painful that first week before they were discovered! As soon as we got them both revised, things got easier. She was still constantly eating the first month, but I was able to keep my soreness to a minimum with lanolin and Medela soft shells for sore nipples. I highly recommend those soft shells! Also Ameda hydrogels provided great relief the first week when we were battling the tongue and lip tie. They last for several days.

Ive only had them a day, but so far majorly love the washable ones. I have a lot of leaking after my 4 hour sleep, and these are definitely better than disposables were. I am no longer waking up wet as these absorb enough...and they're really soft.

Get yourself some hydrogel breast discs. Continue to apply lanolin like there is no tomorrow but also the breast discs on top. They really speed up healing and feel AMAZING (particularly if you put them in the fridge first). As I see you are breastfeeding, you will definitely want some nipple cream.

You may also want to get some leak protection. I like these because they are reusable!

A boppy or something similar (breastfeeding pillow) won’t hurt either!

These crossover tops are actually really cute, and are perfect to double as breastfeeding-friendly tops.

I've had good luck with the bamboo reusable pads: Amazon. But I agree that this would be awesome as a nursing bra!

Super normal! These are great if you feel like you need something to prevent soak through.

I have no advice for the manual vs electric pump, but I didn't see anyone mention nursing pads. I like the Lansinoh ones, personally (they stick better than the Medela, IMO). This would help with the leaky boob issue!

Just pull a boob out and go! I’d usually bring along some Bamboobies to catch any leakage, but it was very freeing.

Probably just irritated from feeding a lot. I love this nipple balm ! I’m allergic to wool and can’t use the lanolin stuff, but IMO the balm is a miracle worker. It works in a matter of hours when I apply it at the first sign of pain. Maybe a little greasy, but feels good and you don’t have to clean it off before feeding baby. I also use it on my hands when they get dry and cracked from washing all the time.

And my MIL got me this housecoat type thing made of sweatshirt material that was longer than knee length, zipped up, and had 2 massive pockets. I lived in the thing for like a month because I couldn't stand pants after my C-section. Plus it was warm and the pockets were really handy for carrying things (phone, water bottle, burp cloths, etc) while I was holding the baby.

Breast milk and letting them get lots of air! When you can't just hang out topless, just a tiny bit of coconut oil feels really great. Also these things. You can put them in the fridge and they feel SO good. But don't use them with milk or oil, just a little bit of water if you don't want to use them dry since they can be kind of sticky.

I have these Baby Zeli pads that I like. I wish they had contouring--you have to be careful when positioning them so they don't bunch up and show through your shirt--but they are very comfortable and absorbent.

A few suggestions.

1. Cold gel pads like these inside a sports bra to limit movement/stimulation.
   
   
2. Ibuprofen for pain.
   
   
3. Peppermint! Really. Strong real peppermint. My doctor recommended buying a few tins of Altoid curiously strong peppermints and just keep sucking on one throughout the day. Peppermint is known to dry up milk, tea isn’t really strong enough.

4. Vitamin B6 at 200mg for 5 days only then back to daily recommended dose of 100mg if needed.
   
   I’ve heard Sudafed and Benadryl help but I didn’t use them myself.

Also, start nursing twice in a row per side for a few feedings - so left left right right - get it?
This will give each nipple more time to heal after a feeding. Apply something cold- like an ice pack or ice wrapped in a soft baby washcloth before AND after nursing. The cold can give you a little numbness before nursing and be really soothing after.

I started out with single use but man they are kinda terrible. Noisy, itchy, hard to keep in place. I keep one package in the diaper bag just in case but reusable are the way to go. I use the bamboobies brand and they have been great. Be sure if there are overnight vs regular that you get a set of each, they really do serve different purposes.

  I think that covers just about everything. I used travel packing cubes to keep all of the clothing items organized, and I already had several different other travel bags that I generally use when actually leaving town, for all of the "other" items. [edited formatting]

The best ones I've used are the Johnson contour pads because they are shaped to fit inside my bra, they aren't too huge and they are soft. I've only found them at one store near me, Walmart I think, but now I've found them on Amazon so I'll probably start buying them there once I'm done with this box of Lasinoh.

I use a Spectra and I have this pumping bra. It’s the only one I could find that allows you to slide the flanges in, since they’re all one piece on the Spectra. It also has clips so you can pull it down for nursing. It kind of gives me a uni-boob but whatever.

Hands-on pumping can be a game changer for a lot of people. Look up videos on YouTube of people doing it. It’s essentially massaging the breast while pumping.

Do you bring everything all set up to work with you? Like the bottles assembled and all that? What’s making it take so long to get going?

I’ve been using these for probably 4 months now. They work well, but I’m not a heavy leaker. I’d recommend buying two packs so you aren’t washing them constantly.

I got a haakaa pump to catch the milk that leaks from the opposite breast while my baby feeds from the other one. (I don’t use the suction though to avoid creating more demand for milk.) I just prop it under my breast to catch what drips out and then I store it in the fridge. That helps because I’m not wasting the milk and it doesn’t go all over me or the baby.

I also bought the lansinoh ultimate protection nipple pads and they are AMAZING. They hold so much milk and you can avoid getting milk on your bra or clothes.

And I got the lansinoh nipple cream because it’s safe for baby, no need to wipe it off before she eats. And I haven’t had dry or cracked nipples yet!

My baby is only 11 days old but this combo has been working so far!

Also 24 weeks (hey due date buds!) and I am fairly sure leaking is coming up for me in the next week or so. Boobs are acting like they're about to do something weird.

I guess there are two kinds. The crazy expensive kind that can damage your breast tissue but produce change quicker and the breastmilk kind that you have to use 8 times a day in separate 20 minute sessions. Apparently it stimulates certain hormones and makes your breasts grow.

These! They are the most comfortable ones I have found so far, and don't make my boobs look lumpy at all. I absolutely HATED the medela ones personally. I felt the same way, like I looked like I had stuffed my bra with a wad of tissues.

I bought those and bought a 4-pack of Bamboobies for when I'm wearing a tight-fitting shirt. The knock-off Bamboobies pads aren't quite as soft and are a bit bulkier. Totally worth it for the price, though.

I have not tried them yet (pregnant with my first), but have heard that the Ameda hydrogels last a lot longer than the other brands. Still disposable, but much less so than medela. You can get them on Amazon here.

I also have sensitive nipples. It did hurt in the beginning but we worked through it and I'm so glad we did. It was absolutely worth it. Also: nipple shield, and nipple gel pads

I use these and have no issues with them. They're so much cheaper than Bamboobies. 7 pairs for $14 vs. 8 pairs for $25. I haven't tried Bamboobies though so I don't know if they're sooooo much better or not.

These Ameda ComfortGel pads have helped me deal with blisters/skin getting ripped off

This is the kind I got. Unless they get shifted over, I usually don't have a problem with absorbtion. The only time they ever don't absorb is when I'm lazy nursing at night and just loose all the let down. But during the day I would only really change them to get moisture away from my skin, but if I pump twice while at work I don't really have any problem. And they are supposed to get better at absorbtion with washes.

Holy grail item? This swing. My son slept in it exclusively for 4-5 months. It was the only thing that would stop him from crying.
