what resolution are you looking for?
I have the Optoma HD180 (out of the market for newer models)
the Optoma HD25LV
and the ML300

and I can vouch for them for movies as well as gaming.
The good thing about the ml300 is its small size but it has a max resolution of 1024x768 I think, although you can connect hdmi to it, but it's so convenient to carry around, it even fits a messenger bag without problem.

The HD25LV or similars are the popular models, being among the preferred choices for <$1000 projectors. 1080p, 3D-capable
Great image and luminosity on both.

I work in the profession A/V field working with large corporate events. I think very few people would be happy with something like that over the long term.

Minimally, I'd look at something that's XGA or WXGA.

The Optoma DX339 is a pretty good little projector

Optoma projectors have been around for quite a while and bulbs are usually very available for them and can be found at somewhat reasonable prices compared to other solutions.

They do have LED projectors that have enough light output for dark rooms now.

I've seen the Acer in a dark room with a 100" screen and it was plenty bright for movies.

You don't need nearly as many lumens as some people think. My Mitsibishi HC3800 is 1300 lumens and measures about 900 actual in economy mode and I have a 136" screen and it's plenty bright for movies. Much brighter and you start to lose great black levels.

That's ~900 lumens on a 136" screen with a "bad" camera which is why the color is off.

That said, the K11 though is probably too dim only being 200 lumens. The other LED projectors I linked are 500 lumens.

Don't rule out projectors. For the size of the screen, they can be a fantastic savings and an stunning experience. Check this one out:

It's about the same cost as a 42" TV. The drawback is that they are not great in bright rooms during the day, but at night ... well, let me say that everyone who sees ours is blown away. Watching anything else is like trying to watch TV on a cell phone. You will never go back.

I just picked up the ML500. It's an LED projector and it's fantastic. No need to replace bulbs or anything. I'm never buying a TV again.

I have the Optoma HD600 in my lounge and it is fantastic. Very bright and fairly cheap too.

If you want an LED one there is the Optoma ML500. Slightly more expensive but no need to replace lamps.

EDIT: The American version of the HD600 is the Optoma PRO160S it seems.

You will be needing a big commercial projector. A Christie or Panasonic. Is there a budget?
