Yeah, I didn't mention the ink I was using because it didn't occur to me that different inks flow differently. That was my mistake. This Metro is currently inked with Diamine Ox Blood.

• I'll take your word for it about the Pelikan inks being drier. I've been checking out the Pelikan inks anyway so I'll order some samples of those. Thanks!
  
  
• I've had my eye on the Tomoe River FP Notebook but at its price point I am going to wait until I've improved my penmanship and found the right combination of inks and nibs. For now I'm using the Leuchtturm A5 size journal and the Rhodia A4 size wire bound Dot Pad. I was under the impression that the Dot Pads had great paper so that's why I chalked the bleeding up to heavy hand, nib size or writing speed.

  I've been using this Leuchtturm mostly for practice by utilizing it as a daily journal. So, you're right saying bleed through is fine as I am not that concerned. I chose the Leuchtturm based on recommendations and reviews for it's great paper and quality. But ultimately it's purpose in life has been to be a test notebook since the day I received it a few days ago lol. Bleed through isn't that big of an issue right now but I would love to eliminate the problem if I can, you know? Both as a learning experience and aesthetics since I am writing on both sides of each page.

I agree with Mo Willems. The Pigeon books of his are fan favorites with most kids! Pete the Cat is another great series kids love. There is also a series “there was an old lady” (who swallowed a fly is probably one your remember) but they have one for each season and various others. Those are pretty popular with kids.

I get a lot of my books for very cheap prices at Ollie’s Bargain Outlet. You have to dig for them sometimes but I’ve uncovered lots of great books there by digging.

Libraries also will often have cheap books that were either donated for the book sales or that have been taken out of circulation. My library has a small section year round that can be purchased. I’ve found some other great books here too!

TL;DR: A tracing table will allow you to see a sheet of dot-grid underneath your fancy letter writing paper as well as a cover-sheet you might be using to prevent smudging + links and some other tips below.


I buy loose leaf Tomoe for my personal letters, and I really don’t want to have lines on a personal letter. Lots of people create them with pencil and erase afterwords, and I’ve even seen individuals use rubber bands, but I think both of these are painful! I was recently talking to Portbow about this in another post, and I described how I use a thin usb tracing table (or light table) with a sheet of dot-grid underneath so I can see the dots.

The second problem I have that is handily solved by a tracing table is ink drying times on fancy paper as a left-handed writer. If there there are lines above my current one that are still wet (the Organic Ink in the supplied photos takes 15 minutes on Tomoe), I guarantee I will smear it with my left hand while writing. To address this, I use a second sheet of printer paper to cover as I write, and the ink dries quickly against the printer paper. With the tracing table, you can cover directly above your current working line and still see what you've written.

One final trick. I paperclip the pieces of paper together and stick them to the board with a rubber band. This keeps everything aligned nicely so I’m not wrinkling the page with oil from my right hand as I’m trying to keep it steady.

I think these kinds of light tables were used extensively in the journalism department that I worked in when I was in college, so it just made sense to me. Those used to be big tables with fluorescent tubes in them, which made them super inconvenient. I think the new LED lighted plastic ones they have today are amazing.

To be sure, it's not especially convenient to use somewhere else than your desk at home, but the thin one I linked to above can fit next to your notepad in a briefcase or bag, and you can use it with an external USB battery pack like you use to recharge your phone if you're feeling particularly adventurous. People will go out of their way to talk to you about it if they see you using a fountain pen and portable light table in public, like a coffee shop.

Lots of people just want to keep things simple, and this might not be the best solution for you. However, I personally find it to be the easiest experience once you get everything set up!

So I have a weird little idea for a craft project. I play Dungeons and Dragons but I'm too cheap for miniatures, so I've been looking into replacements.

My idea is basically to make discs/tokens out of neoprene and small magnets, with one side having something that could be drawn on and is either easily erasable or replaceable. The neoprene and magnets are specifically to give each token some weight and friction, so they can't be knocked around too much accidentally.

I've done a little research and I've found some of the materials I'd need:

These magnets are pretty much exactly what I'm looking for, though I'm not exactly sure how strong they are. I'd like for them to be strong enough to, say, stick to a fridge with about a 1/16th of an inch of neoprene between the two.

Then, I can use a pair of these neoprene washers to cover the outside of the magnet. The size isn't a perfect match to the magnet, but I've looked and this is about as close as I can get without having to buy entire sheets of neoprene and cut out the discs/rings I need myself. The magnets have a 10mm diameter, which leaves ~1.35mm around the outside of the magnet, which I suppose I could fill with...tape? There'd also be space above and below the magnet, but I'm not worried about 7/40ths of a millimeter.

I'll get another set of washers with a smaller inner diameter (but the same 1 inch outer diameter) to use as the bottoms of the tokens, just so the magnet isn't visible.

As far as the drawing surface, I'm not sure. I want it to be pretty solid, so I'm thinking I could use this stuff with these applied over top so I can get the 'easily reusable' part down. Still not entirely sure, but that seems like a reasonable solution.

I have no idea what sort of adhesive to use. Pretty big part of it, but I've never done anything like this before.

In the end, it'd look something like this. Clocks in at about $85 (most of it being the washers), but that'd get me about 100 tokens. I don't think I could use 100 tokens, but I think I could find people interested in them.

First, let me thank you for the kind words. Second, I truly like your handwriting. The 'f' especially jumps out at me, you've added a distinctive elegance to that letter. Yes, looking at your writing again and again, I like it very much.

You asked about practice, so...I write all the time. I carry a work journal in which I document my day. I practice writing different peoples names a lot. Not to copy their signature, but to practice different letter combinations. And, let's face it, some people just have really pretty names when written. My version of doodling is writing different words or names in a little steno book or on a legal pad.

The pen is a Lamy Safari, the ink is Lamy brand as well. There are better fountains on the market, but I really like the simplicity of the Lamy Safari. It's durable and simple.

In my earliest posts, I was writing on Crane & Co. sheets. It's a linen paper which I use when I write letters. It takes a bit of practice though, because the ink bleeds if you don't hold the pen just so and write fast enough. Lately, I've been using Office Max Multi-Purpose paper for my notes here on reddit. It holds the ink, doesn't bleed too much, and photographs well under my desk lamp.

I think that's about it! I'd love to see more of your handwriting in the future, keep using it! It's slowly fading as they don't even teach it to kids anymore...

  It really depends what you're looking for, but I've used the paper from all of those, and they're pretty good, especially since they all hold up to fountain pen ink quite well. I've run through three of these Rhodia Meeting Books in the last couple years for work. The paper is great for fountain pens even with wet ink and the organization really worked well for me. I usually get the smaller size but I've linked the larger one here.

I also really love my travelers notebook for work with fountain pens but it meets none of your other requests.

Thought of another one that might be better for you. This is a bound full size Midori notebook. Midori makes travelers notebooks and the paper is generally great for fountain pens. No table of contents or page numbers but I've found those difficult to get right.

There's also this I've never used this brand but it hits all your requests and is heavy duty paper so it may work for fountain pens. No telling how smooth it is. Good price though. Dot Grid Version

I've experimented with a number of things, and I think my favorite solution is Dry-Erase friendly tokens. You can make them a lot of ways, but the cheapest way is by buying sheets of dry-erase sticker paper cut and stuck on tokens. With a pair of scissors you can have all the tokens you really need for under $25 bucks. If you want to be really cheap then make the tokens with stuff you have on hand like cardboard or leftover miniature bases or literally any substance which you can cut up.

This beats printing out pre-labelled ones because you're never like "where's that orc..." You take a marker, and you make an orc. Even better, you can number the monsters as you lay them out (orc 1, orc 2, orc 3) which makes calling enemies at the table easier than "that one." (This helps you too, since you can use this nomenclature in your initiative and damage notes.) Even even better you can (if you wish) apply a color-logic to them if you're in a complicated skirmish (the blue ones are friends, etc.). If you need even more reasons, you can fit like a bazillion of them in a dice bag and they pack up pretty small since they're flat.

Of course! I just wish international shipping didn't cost so much or I'd send you a spare I have. :(

Alternatively, there's also Tomoe River Paper, but it's a little pricey. I think that's like $29 USD there.
But, if you're willing to try binding loose sheets of paper, I would recommend this paper. I'm an amateur bookbinder and I've successfully made a journal out of this paper before and plan to do so again in the future.

I normally use Coverartproject to reprint cover's, there have been some covers that were not available for gamecube that I had pretty much make from ps2 or xbox covers before. But most of them are pretty high quality scans. Sometimes I adjust the contrast and brightness but that's pretty much all I do.

I bought gloss paper and at first I used my ink jet printer but then I ended up just running out of ink after maybe 10 prints. Now I bring them to office depot and if you bring your own paper, color printing is I think 49 or 59 cents a print I'm not sure. But the quality is better and I don't have to waste money on color ink cartridges. They know me now but I ask to do a print preview and normally it's already perfect size for printing how I want.

If by "good deal", you're asking whether that's a good price for five Clairefontaine notebooks with 96 sheets of A5-sized paper, well, yes, it does seem to be.

If by "good deal" you're asking whether this paper is worth paying more for than a pad you can pick up at the grocery store for super cheap... it depends. This paper is very good, if you like super-smooth paper that minimizes feathering, ghosting, and bleedthrough. I've had some trouble writing on it with a fountain pen, which had more to do with the pen than the paper- the nib wasn't quite set up to handle paper that smooth.

But you are paying a premium for higher paper quality, and only you can say whether that is worth the extra cost. (And remember: the "extra cost" here is not just in comparison to bargain-basement stuff; it's also in comparison to paper that is just a bit cheaper than this.) That's not very satisfying, I know, so I'll leave you with this: if I had $50 in my notebook budget this week and a Massdrop account, I would get it.

Not identical, but similar idea and have heard great things about Lihit lab products. I ordered a couple and am still waiting for them to arrive. If you're stateside, I think jetpens carry them as well.

There are not so many medieval-looking notebooks out there. You can find a few on Amazon with the keyword "medieval notebook." But paper quality is questionable on those products. If you have no other options but these, then you have to be careful on your ink choices. Iron-gall inks tend to feather less and behave well on cheap papers. Check out Platinum Classic inks. They are iron-gall and perhaps the vintage sepia green/black/brown color you are looking for.

My idea is: how about using a parchment? What I know is that J.Herbin and other manufacturers sell parchments at reasonable prices. This way you will waste less papers than using a notebook.

Pretty easy to do! The printer is rated to run on nine volt DC, so a 9v battery should work fine. I did this about three weeks ago, been using it frequently, and all is well.

If you need paper, it's just 38mm/1.5" thermal paper. Here's enough for like 3,000 Game Boy Camera prints for seven dollars.

Been having lots of fun with it, been taking it into work and taking pictures of my friends. Everyone's been receptive of it so far.

And since we like sharing Game Boys here's my very clean DMG-01 with a bivert and backlight mod. I'm going to keep it looking as stock as possible, only thing I've done is the backlight mod, bivert, replaced the speaker, and the button rubber thingies, whatever they're called.

Have Ni-MH's in there for now, but if anyone knows of any Li-Ion mods, let me know!

Edit: A conversation in the comments has made it apparent that your nine volt batteries mileage may vary. I've been using my 9.6v 230 mAh Powerex batteries, and it's drained the charge after about 100 prints. You could probably get 50 out of a regular 9 volt you buy at the store, but you really should invest in rechargeables. 100 prints is really tenable, it took me about three weeks to go through that many, haha. But do keep in mind that if you don't have rechargeables, and instead would be using cheap 9 volts, this mod will likely burn through them.

I use C.R.Gibson. It is simple, but classy. If you'd like something fancy, try searching etsy. They have a ton of vendors that make beautiful stationary.

These would be super helpful! I'm pretty forgetful so having those stuck all over with notes and reminders would help so much. They're $6.99 though, so if that's too much over, just go ahead and count me out. :)

I bought the corner rounder and photo paper similar to this.

Printing on photo paper did the trick: no need to do the gloss spray, and it came out in quality easily as good as the Pathfinder Pawns quality. VERY impressed and VERY highly recommended.

The corner rounder didn't work so well. The one I bought for $10 with a 10mm radius didn't cut through the 2mm board that I used. It was basically the same rounder that Vynx used, but they were cutting much thinner board.

I am debating whether or not I want to get a heavy duty corner rounder or not.

EDIT: Got the heavy duty rounder, worked pretty well. Instructions have been updated.

I use Hammermill Color Laser Gloss. It was a little rough at first, but I can get perfect transfers with it every time now. Just need good heat (duration, not so much temperature) and good pressure.

The best I could do. One of my friends has been raving about this movie and I've seen snippets and gosh it's a pretty movie. Old Georgie.

I think it’s really cute, very aesthetically appealing and there isn’t much bleed through! I’ve actually used copics for an art spread in mind and honestly I didn’t mind the bleed through (although with copics it was obvious unsurprisingly)!

Great minds eh? I usually don't label my beers either but I brewed a batch for a wedding present recently and wanted to fancy the bottles up a bit (so I already had the gear for these ones). The labels are just cheap brown paper, and I stuck them on the bottles with Pritt Stick (seems to do the job). The text is stamped on letter-by-letter using wooden stamps. It is fairly time-consuming but I like the effect and I think it's worth it for a gift or a couple bottles.

Personally, I enjoy using the Midori MD Notebook which you can get with grids, blank, or ruled. I also use the LIFE Notebook which you can get in ruled, gridded, or blank. Pay attention for the sheet size and number before you purchase them. A4 is approximately the standard American 8.5x11.2 inch sheet. Do you already have your preferred pens and pencils? You can get some good ones with tips as thin as 0.28mm (though I used 0.3mm and 0.5mm).

Boxes are expensive and your games come in them!

I ship with bubble wrap / foam and that heavy duty packing paper. Unless its a large / heavy game I've had zero complaints. I've also received several this way and also had zero issues.

I guarantee you that offers better protection than how Amazon just slings them into a thin cardboard box and chucks them about everywhere.

Yes its a little more expensive up front and they take up space but I've shipped over 10 separate items and still have a tonne of it left, even for some KS I've resold if I have to split boxes the thick paper makes a great space filler.

The only caveat is that if you're selling on eBay be careful its not going internationally, I'm not sure how well it would hold up to that, it might be alright though if its not a heavy game and has a sturdy box, maybe add a bit more foam and an extra layer of paper.

I'd only use boxes if I had them lying around or you were shipping a lot of games to one person.

I was recently told of Tomoe River Paper by another redditor and it is absolutely fantastic for absorbing ink! It’s very thin and smooth and I have yet to see ink feather or bleed through it. I would highly recommend!

The foam board I used was just normal foam board. I had a glossy white one and a matte black one. I do not suggest using super glue on the matte black as it will absorb into the paper and leave behind a oil-slick looking halo around the insect.

What I did was glue parchment paper (something like this) to the foam backing. I really liked the contrast it made with the insects, and it also gave it a classy and more professional look, I thought.

Have you considered using carbon paper to transfer the images? Would save you a lot of time, not having to cut out your stencils. Its simple to use, relatively cheap, and somewhat reusable.

All you would have to do is place the carbon paper between the wood and the image, trace the outline of the image with a pencil. The carbon paper will transfer your tracing straight to the wood. Then you'd just have to carve out the design.

In case you're unfamiliar with the product here's an example of carbon paper.

They've been sold out of the "Writer" (the lined version) for what seems like an eternity. I've given up on waiting for it and have purchased other notebooks in the meantime. It would be great if they actually had it in stock!

PS there are plenty of stores that sell loose Tomoe River paper. Although I haven't seen any A5 dot grids. Just A4 dot grids:

Gameboy printer thermal paper, even the rolls that are still sealed, are all degraded by this point in time and will print like that.

I suggest you get new paper so you get a better print, here's an alternative that works according to comments i've read:

Over time, those will fade too but you can at least scan them after getting a crisp and clear print, instead of what you have now.

Midori MD is fountain pen friendly, A5, gridded, and comes in packs of notebooks as well. It’s cheaper than both Rhodia/Leuchtterm in the short and long term.

I guess what im referring to in my opening post is can I condense the materials im using into something more efficient? Should I just do everything on a white board that I can erase and write my monsters on index cards and call it a day?

Midori MD is a great option. It opens flat as soon as you open the book - no need to break the spine. The catch is that is has 88 sheets = 176 pages.

The paper is toothier than most FP-friendly paper I've used, but it holds up to Western medium nibs very well.

Dry erase sheets. I use them for other stuff, but they are very easy to size, cut, and stick. Highly recommend for your problem.

I just ordered a Lihitlab notebook cover. Technically, it's a notebook with a cover, but I bought it for the cover. They come in A5 and I think also B5. They do not seem to be waterproof but they seem to be made of a decent material that could be sprayed with something like Scotchguard. Functional and non-fussy design.

That's your biggest mistake.

NEVER trust what you see on screen. Even a perfectly calibrated monitor isn't going to look the same as the printed material, because ambient lighting makes such a huge difference - That's why Pantone books even include a "lighting test" swatch in the back of the book that indicates if you're viewing the book under the correct light, as different Pantone inks respond differently to different wavelengths/color temperatures of light.

Go buy your Pantone Formula Coated/Uncoated swatch books. They cost about $135, which I'm willing to bet is less than what it's going to cost you to re-order your client's work. (My first color mistake cost me $270 - i bought my Pantone books the same day.) Then keep it in a dark box, away from light, unless you're using it.

You might also consider getting the CMYK Guide, which has combinations of CMYK (no Pantone inks, just standard CMYK) so you can pick your "normal" CMYK/Process colors from it, rather than from your monitor.

And as stated elsewhere, if you're not actually printing using Pantone inks (called "Spot Colors", used most often for 1-color or 2-color jobs), then don't use a Pantone color to choose from - many Pantone colors CAN'T be represented using CMYK. There's a book for that, as well, called the Color Bridge book - it shows the "closest approximation" to a Pantone color using CMYK inks, but you should only ever be in that territory with a client who has specified Pantone colors for their identity, and is OK with Bridge matching).

Bottom line, don't use Pantone if you don't have to. Never trust your monitor. Always refer to the printed swatch books. And always get a printed proof if there's any doubt (which you did, so good on you there!)

As far as printing vector art (non-solid color) with a Pantone Spot color, you absolutely can, but your AI document has to be set up correctly. Your artwork all needs to be recolored (using the Edit...Edit Colors...Recolor) to use only that spot color - AI will tint the color correctly on that artwork. But again, this only applies if you're actually printing with Spot Colors, not if you're printing 4-color/CMYK/Process (all terms for the same thing).

It does use thermal paper, but you don't need the official Nintendo stuff. I'm using one of these 38mm rolls intended for POS systems.

Maybe you could add some adhesive whiteboard paper to the back?

I bought this expecting a softcover notebook. Turns out that it’s thin but deceptively sturdy. It’s harder than average cardstock used on planner covers. I’m not even sure how to explain it. 368 page, 52 gsm, white dot grid paper is shown below, but they have other options I think.
