Small things but be sure to bring a backpack, comfortable shoes, cash, water, and snacks (convention food is expensive). I bought THIS which changed my life for cons. So much easier to carry books around without risk of damage.

Most dealers will typically give the best deals on Sundays. I usually thumb through boxes, and if I see a few I like, I pick them out and say "hey man, would you do a bundle deal if I bought all 5 of these?" typically they'll cut your something. Or "hey man do you have a deal if I buy 10 books?"

For expensive stuff, I usually ask to see the book so I can get a closer look (genuinely want to inspect it) and if I want a lower price just be polite and honest "I'm really interested in the book, but think you can come down at all? Maybe by $10?" most books are marked up for cons expecting to be negotiated (for expensive books), so just be casual about it! And don't be afraid to ask about their collections or shop, I've met some super nice dealers who insist on throwing in a few more books to make a good impression.

Time of day won't matter, you can use my advice any day, but Sunday is when they put out the signs for best discounts.

You'll get the feel for the type of book pretty quick. Usually there are tables with longboxes for cheaper books, and a wall at a distance for expensive books. They'll ask if you want to see anything, and if you're just browsing, just be honest. I like looking at keys so it's fun to admire.

What to keep

Keep anything related to taxes for at least 5 years. This is important for verification, as well as possible audits.

Keep anything related to bank accounts, credit cards, loans/mortgages, pay stubs, and other financial stuff for as long as the account is active, plus at least one fiscal year.

Keep any bills, even after they've been paid, for at least a year. You need them to contest charges, and often information on bills is used for identity and account verification.

Keep all identification records (IDs, SS cards, birth certificates, passports, official change of address forms, etc.) in a safe, secure location that can still be accessed at need. Don't carry them with you (except driver's license), or you risk losing them and giving someone an easy way to steal your identity.

Keep everything having to do with your house, apartment, car, boat, or any other large property that you own/rent and have to register or pay taxes on, for as long as you own/rent it.

Keep the warranty info and proof of purchase for any expensive things you own, for the duration of the warranty.

Keep copies of any personal medical documentation, unless you are covered by a provider that uses an electronic medical record. And even then, it's good to have a paper copy for backup and personal reference.

It's also a good idea to keep a copy of anything that you have signed, for as long as is relevant.

And of course, if you ever get involved in any sort of legal trouble, audit, lawsuit, divorce, or anything along those lines, KEEP EVERYTHING.

The bottom line is: If you can imagine a plausible reason why you might need it in the future, for reference or verification or proof of something or evidence or anything else, you should keep it. If you have a good file system, it won't take up much room or time, and you'll be very happy you did when that future situation comes up.

What to keep it in

If you only have a few people's papers to worry about, I suggest one of these or something similar. It's a latchable bin or box with built-in rails for hanging folders. If you are worried about security, it might be worth getting one of these, a fireproof (and waterproof) safe. It won't keep someone from walking off with the entire safe, but it prevents casual pilfering, and protects your important documents in case of a fire or flood.

Drawers or file cabinets are useful for larger organizational systems, but a household will almost never need something that large, and they tend to be bulky and hard to move around.

Do not, under any circumstances, try to store anything medium- or long-term in open paper trays. They won't stay organized, as it's too easy to just toss stuff on top, and if you need to move it around it'll just end up in a pile somewhere.

How to organize it
First, get some hanging folders for general categories and file folders for subcategories. They are very cheap. You can get different colors for fancy organization and scrapbooking, but it's probably not worth it. As long as they have tabs for writing labels on, you should be fine.

That's all you need. Well, besides the box (and a pen). There are lots of organizational system kits that you can buy for loads of money with colors and stickers and indexes and charts and fancy little view windows, but all you really need are some folders and a place to put them.

Start out with some general categories: Medical/Insurance; Credit Cards; Bank Accounts; Taxes; Bills; Rental/house/car/mortgage stuff; Identification papers; Warrenty/owner's manual info. That sort of thing. And in each category, make a file folder for, say, each bank account, or each credit card account, or each person's medical info, or each company that sends you bills. This takes very little time to set up, but makes it a lot easier to find things when you need them.

The thing to remember when setting up such an organizational system is this: Do what makes sense to you. You're the one who is going to have to remember how to use this system in the future, so file things in a way that makes intuitive sense at the time. If all of your credit and checking and savings and mortgage are through the same bank, maybe the bank should be your major category and each of those accounts should be a subcategory. If you would rather think of it as "things I own" and "things I owe" then that works too. If you want to get rid of subcategories entirely and give everything its own folder in alphabetical order, that's cool. Whatever makes sense to you, do that. And once you have a system, try not to make any drastic changes. You'll have a hard time remembering whether to use the old or new system, and that causes confusion, which leads to apathy, which leads to everything in a giant unorganized pile.

Where to put it

Ideally, somewhere that's near enough to the door or mailbox that you won't just toss things on the table to file later, but out-of-the-way enough that it's not an obvious target if someone breaks into your house. On a shelf is better than in a closet. Again, the important thing is that it's convenient enough that you'll consistently file things rather than leaving them "for later."

And finally

As OP said, it's also a very good idea to have a trashcan right next to the door, or even right under the mailbox, where you can immediately toss anything that isn't worth keeping (junkmail, mailers, credit card offers, etc.). Anything with sensitive info should be shredded or torn up first, of course.

Here's my full write-up, but TL;DR I used the file box instead of the accordion folder. It's bigger, but the handle is nice, and I can fit anything I want in it (except the overly large map).

-----------------------

FYI, I slightly modified the YASS Gloomhaven setup to make the storage a little more efficient/intuitive and keep all the standee bottoms in the combat bin.

I go into more detail here for anyone interested.

ORIGINAL POST:

I use a variation of the YASS Gloomhaven setup. You can add an accordion folder if you like to save even more setup/breakdown time. I made a few modifications to the layout to make it more intuitive and keep the standees in the combat box. Here's what my updated layout looks like, and here are the files I used. I also lay my planos flat instead of standing them up as it gives slightly more space at the top to fit the board, etc. FYI, I didn't add the counters label, just left that square blank, but everything else is good to go.

I used a Portable File Box to hold my map tiles, rule books, monster stat cards (although I use Gloomy Companion most of the time), city/road event decks, and unlocked items. There are comparable options on Amazon.

Album of full setup

-----------------------

MATERIALS LIST:

  1. 3x Plano 3600 boxes. Size 11" x 7.25" x 1.75".
  2. 1x Plano 3601 box. Size 11" X 7.25" X 1.13".
  3. Paper/Card Stock (for printing plano labels)
  4. Zip-lock bags

Note: the plano 3600 on amazon is a 4 pack. You can find them at Dick's Sporting Goods occaisonally for less $$$: 3600,
    3601

    Optional:
Tape (I didn't use any, but others said they needed it to keep the label on the plano lid)
The Portable File Box I had laying around
Amazon File Box with stronger latch
Hanging File Folders I had laying around

    -----------------------

    CHANGES FROM THE ORIGINAL Y.A.S.S.
    Units 1 Box:
    No changes needed.

    Units 2 Box:
I moved the Inox Bodyguards to the Boss slot which I shrunk 1 square by moving one large boss to the terrain box. I moved all of the standee bases to the small plano. I used the extra space to move all of the attack modifier decks in here. I store the number tokens and (useless) curse/bless tokens in the 2 remaining slots I opened up.

    *Small Plano (modifiers/tokens):*
In the small plano I freed up the whole bottom row by moving the number tokens (which largely go unused) to the terrain box, removing the curse/bless tokens (since they aren't used in the game), and moving the element/HP/EXP markers up one space. I shrunk the single damage markers to a single cell (they fit just fine) to make room. The bottom row now houses the standee bases.

    Terrain Box:*
I used the small dividers from the 3601 to separate out the traps, water, totem, treasure sections (this makes them easy to pull out). I shrunk the Doors by a square and added a square for traps using the short dividers to keep all 4 traps separate. Chopping out the divider to make room for the 3-hex objects was a lot more work than I expected, but it was worth it. I added in the 2 bosses to the bottom of that section since they don't fit anywhere else (and will likely only be used once each).

I just ordered this tupperware, which may or may not be big enough for your needs (I've seen these Iris storage containers in various sizes recommended by other users here, which is why I opted for this brand).

As per your humidification question, the nice thing about Heartfelt beads is that, much like Bovedas, you can't really have too much. Using more than what your actual storage space requires won't hurt you at all.

From the Heartfelt website: "You can use more Hearfelt Beads in your humidor than the minumum amount recommended. The additional Heartfelt Beads will give you more moisture storage and help the humidor recover quicker when it has been opened. The extra Heartfelt Beads will also help compensate for seasonal changes and a less than perfect seal on your humidor."

Hope that helps!

Ikea has a lot of versatile storage solutions, so you might be able to find something there if you have one nearby? If she's got a room, there's a lot of wall storage options, and if she hasn't, then there are a lot of cool box storage options. Even if you don't amazon's got some good options too. I've got about 6 of those plastic tackle boxes and a dozen or so hoops and I can fit them all into a black banker box I got off of Amazon : https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AJQGNU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It fits neatly in the closet, I can bust it out and grab my thread collection when I need to plan a new project, and while I'm actually working on a project I keep it in one of the larger scrapbook boxes like this : https://www.amazon.com/IRIS-Portable-Project-Case-Clear/dp/B00EFY6CS6
That things fits up to a 12 inch hoop, a folder for the pattern, and scissors, threads, seam ripper etc. Bonus points for keeping the stitching clean if you've got pets or kids, or are clumsy or careless (I fall into that latter category, I love this freaking box).

I guess it all depends on how she wants to store her supplies and how much she plans on having in the future. Hope this can give you some ideas! Tell her happy birthday from the embroidery subreddit!

I have a setup pretty similar to yours (same mobo, same cards, maybe same processor, can't see your fully); here are some things I've learned about it.

First is that to run more than 5 cards per rig you are going to need to run Linux. I've tried 5 cards on Windows 7 and it ran but unstably for a while with hand-picked older drivers. Supposedly Windows 8 can handle 5 without trouble, but I haven't tried it. I haven't been able to get Win7 to run 6; I don't think Win8 will either. I wanted to run windows for voltage control (my first cards were Sapphires), but it wouldn't do what I needed. Linux doesn't have voltage control, but with your cards that shouldn't be an issue because they can (usually) run the F43 BIOS that runs at a much more reasonable 1.09v. I would strongly suggest flashing them sooner rather than later; it really helps with heat among other things.

(btw, if you are using milk crates for cases, these will fit 6 cards better than the staples/home depot ones: http://www.amazon.com/24qt-Blue-Red-Green-Crates/dp/B007IUPR0I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1370712198&sr=8-1&keywords=milk+crates)

I tried Xubuntu 13.04, Lubuntu 12.04, and BAMT on usb drives. I could not get the 'buntus to run stably. They would crash, and they had issues/bugs with rebooting where I would have to be physically next to the machine pushing the power button. I'm not blaming it on the distro; the problem may have been installing it to a usb flash drive. BAMT Litecoin ran like a rock with 5 cards after I updated the Catalyst drivers, but I could not get it to run with more than 5. Any time I plugged a 6th card into the mobo anywhere, X Windows would not start. I eventually went with Debian 7.0 Wheezy, Catalyst 13.4, and the latest cgminer installed on a regular HD. Note that you have to compile Cgminer to work on wheezy (the readme has instructions and dependencies); don't forget to download and copy the ADL includes into the ADL_SDK folder if you go this route.

So far, Debian has been running smoothly with 6 cards. You might even be able to do 7, but you would probably need another power supply with an Add2PSU, and 7 cards don't fit very well in even a 24 qt milk crate.

For linux, your remote admin choices are more limited, but the OS is designed to use them so I think it works more seamlessly. You can use simple SSH to control the boxes via command line. If you don't know the linux command line this may be a pain. You can also use xrdp ("sudo apt-get install xrdp" without the quotes at the command line) to connect from any computer and get a full graphical interface. You can connect through windows using Remote Desktop Connection. There are other options including various versions of VNC, but those are the ones I like.

I am planning on running ANUBIS on a Raspberry Pi to get a similar kind of remote monitoring capability to the one BAMT provides out of the box. I haven't yet set that part up; if you message me I can give you an update when I do. Anubis is also supposed to be able to do remote control of cgminer; this would be good because then you'd only need one computer that was accessible from the internet.

Oh, and you will need powered risers. I got mine from BuyAHash. His username on Reddit is mrstickball . I had a great experience; he had great communication and the shipping was fast once the risers arrived from the factory.

As you say, the Broken Token insert is only for storing the parts away, it doesn't help during play.

The Daedalus Insert, on the other hand, is meant to both help with storage, speed up setup/tear down and be used during play. It's pretty great.

BUT! The Daedalus insert is only for use with the base game, Rise of the Ancients (RotA), Ship Pack 1 (SP1) and the four mini-expansions so far. - it fits ALL of those in just the base game box, which is awesome. BUT, the 2nd big expansion, Shadows of the Rift (SotR) just came out, and all of it together will not fit with the Daedalus insert. So if that insert interests you and you think you will eventually buy all the expansions, you may want to hold off on that for now - supposedly Daedalus is looking at making a new version of the insert once they get their hands on a copy of SotR.

Other than inserts, some cheaper and simpler ways of helping to organize the game are to put all the player components for a particular colour (cubes, discs, ships, 3 colony ships, 1 of each resource marker, action card) in a small box. The Ultra Pro #81173 or the 0.14L Really Useful Box (Amazon Link) are just the right size to fit all that in. If you don't mind always using each race's default colours, toss the ambassadors in there too, and 1 extra colony ship in the green box.

Even with just those and nothing else, setup becomes a lot quicker. Your players can look over the race sheets, and when someone decides they want to play as, say, Eridani they take that player board and you just pass them the little red box with all their components in them. At the end of the game, they dump all their player-specific components back in the box and pass it back to you!

For Ship Parts, it depends a lot on what size of games you'll be doing. A lot of people like to use a plano box, fishing-tackle box or counter tray sort of thing where each ship part has its own pocket. Those are fine for smaller games (2-5) where everyone can reach it, but the wider size of those boxes makes them more awkward to pass around the table. Since I play a lot of 6-9 player games, I find just dumping all the ship parts into one medium-sized tupperware container works fine - it's easy to pass around the table, it never spills, and people don't have any difficulty digging through it to find the ship parts they need. You can also compromise by having 3 small sandwhich-sized tupperware boxes with the unsorted tiles, but divided by type (one box has weapons and drives; one box has hull, computer and shields; one box has the rest).

Cube trays - depends a lot on your players and/or the presence of cats. I have them, but only use them half the time... most of my players are careful enough they don't need them.

Influence disc trays and other holders for things on your player board - you probably don't need these - that stuff is big enough it doesn't move on its own unless you're wearing a dangly scarf. I would wait and see after a half-dozen games before deciding to get anything like this.

Tangentially related: If you do ever plan on having a 9-player game (or 10, or 11, or 12...), better invest in a bigger house then if you can, do it somewhere where there's a TV/projector against one wall and put the Supply Board on its own little table with a camera pointed at it and displaying on the TV/projector so everyone can see it. No matter what kind of organizers/vertical-stand-up-tech-trays/etc you buy, you will not find a way for everyone at the table to be able to read and easily access the Supply Board otherwise!

I’m also new to the game and I’ve found tayda to be a much more accessible site than Mouser — I get overwhelmed by the apparently galactic selection and can’t figure out what to get.

Also u/preppyprepface had really important advice— don’t skimp on your stock. I had to go back to tayda almost immediately and order a bunch more stuff because I initially ordered exactly what I needed for a specific PCB and then got really excited about other potential projects, and the shipping takes a while (weirdly, at a certain point if you order enough it comes DHL from Thailand which for some reason is faster than however they ship from Colorado. Who understands these things?). The most important thing to remember is that things will get screwed up — last week I ruined a 3PDT and shorted an LED and it was great to just reach into the bin for another one and keep chugging. Resistors in particular are so cheap that you can’t even buy less than 10 at a time (10 resistors = $0.12 so it makes sense)

You’ll also want a way to keep things organized — I bought this and this and these. In retrospect I wish I had bought two of the first one, but they’re all useful. Some of the bin walls are removable so you can make different size spaces for different kinds of parts. I then used regular sticky labels (Avery 5160) to label the outside so I could see what went where — for the smaller parts like resistors and capacitors I grouped them, so all the x10kΩ resistors went in one bin (in their little ziploc bags), all the x100kΩ in another bin, etc. it still requires some fishing through (vs buying a big table top organizer) but I live in a small house :)

Here's the best way to mount a milk crate: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003LHO8C0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

You should buy a milk crate with holes in the bottom like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001L9HV9M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have used those milk crate mount things on 2 bikes. I bought that milk crate and I bought 2 sets of those mounts for my CRF250L. It works very well.

Enjoy and good luck.

I'm sure many of us here will see someone asking for storage help and immediately think of the Ikea Expedit; there are other sizes of it, the cheapest being $39.99. I don't own one personally, but many pictures of collections and setups seem to feature that certain unit and many praise it for being perfect for record storage. I plan on getting one sometime.

If you don't want to put out all of the cash for that, milk crates are another solution to the storage problem. A quick Google search brings up many options, but I was surprised to see one from Amazon for a lot more than I expected... http://www.amazon.com/Supreme-Milk-Crate-by-Iris/dp/B001L9HV9M

Well, some men like flowers too. But I'd say chocolate/candy is always good. Or other small random gifts in line with his interests.

In my case, I'm always interested in new/interesting hand tools like wrenches or screwdrivers, pliers and the like. Or little nonsense electronic gadgets. Like: https://www.amazon.com/Useless-Box-Turns-Itself-Storage/dp/B00O0W386C

u/Evari · 4 pointsr/StarTrekStarships

My garage has a big pile of these:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Really-Useful-Box-Litre-Storage/dp/B00DTVXGGW

Each one holds 44 of the standard size boxes pretty nicely.

They're not air tight but they do a pretty good job of keeping moisture out and they stack on top of each other securely.

u/pro_organizer · 6 pointsr/organization

The easiest and cheapest way to sort and temporarily store paper would be to have it vertical, especially if each of the current stacks is its own category. You'd be able to use much more of the existing shelving unit and that would mean whatever isn't making it into the closet right now might fit. I think some magazine holders like these from Ikea would be a big help (Also sold at Amazon.)

Sort the cases by whatever makes the most sense: Last names, dates, etc. I'd use post-it notes on the magazine files until you are certain what kind of labeling structure works best. You won't want to decide to change it halfway through permanently labeling everything.

I hope this gets you started!

u/Tangurena · 5 pointsr/actuallesbians

Get a note book and a file drawer for records. Any repairs or improvements, save the receipts. I also save utility bills and check them about every 6 months. You never know when Comcast decides to add some new fee. Or if your water bill goes way up and you don't do things differently than last year, that can be a sign of a leaking pipe.

In the storage thing I save all the instruction books and warranty papers for new appliances.

Something like:
http://www.amazon.com/IRIS-Letter-Size-Portable-Wing/dp/B00CY53K88/
http://www.amazon.com/Storex-Portable-Storage-Drawer-61523U01C/dp/B002JGJ47S/

In the notebook, I usually keep names and numbers of repair people. So if my neighbor asks, I can tell them. Or if they had something done that I want done maybe next year, I can write it down.

Also, the notebook is where I write down instructions for things that only get done once per year, like draining the sprinkler system.

Oh see now that would be nice. I found this, which is nice enough, but it looks like you just put the comics in there in a group. But if you could have each comic in its own sleeve, that would make it very easy for you to dig through and find the one you want. Especially useful if you're in the middle of a series and don't want a bunch of books spread all over the coffee table.

u/gummy_bear_time · 2 pointsr/GiftIdeas

Sounds like she could benefit from a file cart. Don't forget to get hanging file folders and then colorful file folders to go in them. I think the cart is the way to go (i.e., something bigger), which will be useful as her business expands.

I was initially going to suggest a tray organizer, but as someone who used to do a lot of administrative work, I don't think those are effective for business. You just end up stacking papers into random trays, and nothing ever gets thrown out.

Files boxes are a nice compromise if the cart is too big. I used to have one almost identical to this, except by Stanley. (I can't find the Stanley one on Amazon.) Get the one with the handle. And of course, don't forget to get the hanging folders + colorful file folders to go with it!

u/Izahealyou · 5 pointsr/magicTCG

This 10-800ct vertical Max Protection one is the only one similar to what you are asking about that I can find online. https://www.amazon.com/Card-Penthouse-House-Storage-Box/dp/B01MRTJCXE

Personally I use the BCW 12-802ct and love it, but my shelf has room for it. Could actually use more room for another one, never can get enough space.

As for making your own, I would use wood and do a similar notching system like the BCW card houses use. I prefer thin plywood for projects like these, as it’s durable and strong.

u/JustABitEvil · 1 pointr/comicbookcollecting

Definitely bag and board your books, I use a basic binder that zips shut though these were recently recommended to me. On books that you want signed a trick I've picked up is to bag and board it but cut a hole in the front of the bag marked with colored tape, that way it's signed where you want it.

As to who charges for autographs, this tends to vary. In my experience big names (Sterenko, Lee, Claremont etc.) charge anywhere from $10 to $100 where lots of others don't charge at all or ask for donations to charities they support. Roy Thomas signed several of my books for $10 at a conference I went to back in March.

As to grading, I personally do not slab my books because I still love to read them, even my old silver age stuff, though I am considering getting my Stan Lee signed books graded. I would talk to a rep at the convention about the cost and turnaround time.

Thanks! Not any guide in particular, but cobbled together ideas from a few, mostly from this awesome Instructable

I did find a cheap(ish) lazy watering system that made the plumbing a lot easier, and most of it off amazon as I don't have many good hardware stores near me and absolutely no room for serious carpentry or plumbing (1 bed flat in Central London...). Links are below though:

Solar Powered Waterpump - £20

Recycled Plastic Container - £15

Recycled Plastic 15 Litre Plant Pots - £10 for 12

Reusable Nylon Fine Mesh Food Strainer - £30 for 5

Hozelock Easy Drip Micro Kit - £30 for 15 drippers

Vermiculite - £40 for 100l (waaaaay too big, I miscalculated here!)

Perlite - £20 for 100l (again...)

Probably worth saying I intend to extend the system with a second setup so I had to 'overbuy' components... I'd estimate that the total cost of the components for the system in the video was roughly £70, which, given that I had to use amazon for everything, and most of it is reusable, I'm not too upset about!

u/ickybus · 1 pointr/DIY

While I had a good laugh, I would recommend one of these for a cheap and easy way to store full sheets of sandpaper, as well as sanding blocks and accessories.

u/NotAChaosGod · 2 pointsr/boardgames

A lot of people recommend hobby lobby boxes, but I think they're rather too heavy. Do look nice though. If you're not overly concerned with aesthetics, then this storage row is super functional. You can put the base cards in one drawer (money, victory, curses, et al) and then put each expansion in a different drawer. Be a while before you run out of space there.

u/rickdod3 · 1 pointr/comicbookcollecting

I would suggest buying a stor-folio. They are PERFECT for carrying books at conventions. Here is a link

Also, be aware of the market on certain books. eBay is your friend. Use it to your advantage when dealing with dealers. If they have a book priced at $400 and you can buy one in the same condition on eBay for $250, bring that to their attention. Conventions always have inflated prices.

u/Saphira9 · 2 pointsr/organizing

I organized my most important papers in manilla folders and put them in this kind of box. For the other piles of school papers, I sorted them by year and class as best as I could, and put them in a Bankers Box knockoff with lids.

Start by going through your room and putting the papers into piles according to class or year. Those piles become organized into boxes. It's important to label them with each class or year, so you can quickly get to the stack you want. Smaller binders may fit in this type of box. For big binders, you might want to use a legal size box, or take the papers out of the binders and use cardboard dividers inside the box.

I recently just purchased my first place after living with inlaws for thr past 3 years. Before I moved, I packed my collection in These bad boys. They survived the move and the storage beautifully. Super heavy duty cardboard, I highly recommend these.

Look into getting a record crate such as this one which I got a couple weeks ago: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RA3SX0Y/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Lots of different options on amazon if you don't like this one.

It's cheap, looks great, it's classy, and holds your records vertically so they won't warp. Based on your photo, it looks like you should have enough space to the left of the media center, between the speaker. Or you could place it under the table on which the RP3 is sitting.

Just an idea!

I'm sorry for the stress you are under, but you are a great person for helping your SO like this. He won't be able to think straight for a while. You helping with this will be a huge load off his shoulders.

I'm based in the US, but my father passed a while ago so I've had to do the same thing. Just a couple things I learned. I was able to rent a casket. I know this sounds weird, but hear me out. :) It costs a fraction of a full casket. You pay for the actual box the person is in, but the funeral home puts a dressy casket frame around that internal box. They keep the external frame after the funeral, and your family member is buried or cremated in the inner box.

One thing I am glad I bought was a small, portable filing box. I kept all of the paperwork in there along with a collection of the extra death certificates. That way I always knew where my fathers items were.Keep copies of his incoming bills, insurance items, subscriptions, etc.

And remember, for almost all of these things, there is no huge rush. Take time to help your SO. Once the funeral is over just attack these things slowly.

u/GoldRhapsody · 3 pointsr/comicbooks

I asked this question a few months ago and was directed to this portfolio. I got it last March and it has been great to carry comics and collections. It was a great recommendation.

Just for illustrative purposes:

Banker Boxes: http://www.amazon.com/Bankers-Box-Storage-Lift-Off-Letter/dp/B000FLZE7I -- As long as you keep them somewhere dry and safe, they basically last forever, and they're quite tough for reinforced cardboard. The material is similar to what you'd see in a heavy-duty moving box suitable for packing a bunch of heavy books. Hell, they make great moving boxes, too ;)

Pouches: Something like one of these. Need to have pre-punched holes. No need for an actual zipper, but they should have some method of closing them, such as a ziploc-type closure:

https://www.officesupply.com/school-supplies/student-teacher-supplies/basic-school-supplies/pencil-boxes-pouches/sparco-hole-punched-binder-pocket/p19834.html?ref=pla&cid=ad-pla-non-brand&product_id=19834&adpos=1o1&creative=82620376713&device=c&matchtype=&network=g&gclid=CPe-4PuV1cwCFVUkgQodlWUAHg

I feel pretty blessed in this aspect. My toys are usually in my dresser. My mom never comes in my room, and if she does, and then opens my dresser, she won't care. She knows.

Here's a couple locking boxes/chests from Amazon, that won't break the bank, you might look into:

u/lefsegirl · 2 pointsr/sewing

It's not pretty, but functional: bankers boxes. Front to back, they are letter file size, and side to side, they are legal size. Two rows of standard patterns fit in the legal size side, and oversize ones (Vogue) fit in the letter size side.

u/DangerousFat · 2 pointsr/boardgames

u/leslietheriveter · 1 pointr/organization

You could buy archival storage boxes/bankers boxes. Like /u/pro-organizer said, use whatever sorting system works best (alphabetically, chronologically, etc.). Smaller cases can be put in a manila folder and large cases that don't fit in a manila folder can use the folder as a separator. On the tabs of each folder write whatever identifying information your dad usually uses when looking for cases so you'll see it when you take the lid off a box.

If I'm just playing, I have a messenger bag for my books and a rigid clipboard for my character sheets. Dice are either in a cinched dice bag or my dice vault.

If I'm running a system that requires lots of bits and bobs, like D&D, I have a rolling folding cart that holds everything tidily. If I'm not lugging my stuff very far (just from the car to the game store for instance) I'll just use a cheap banker's box.

Oh! Okay, that makes more sense.

They are called Super Stacker.

The ones I bought were in the store for 88 cents each.

They're the same size as the smallest Really Useful Box but nowhere near as expensive.

Speaking now as a local history librarian & certified archivist:

You do know those scrapbooking-type plastic sheet protectors are NOT acid-free, right? You can get archival-quality plastic display sheets online, but they aren't cheap.

Personally, I just use acid-free folders and banker boxes for everything. They're the standard storage medium for libraries and archives, they're sized for standard folders, they're inexpensive, and they stack neatly in your closet. Amazon has them and so does Walmart.

I especially wouldn't use air-tight plastic tubs for photos. And definitely NOT for pre-1900 photos, because the chemistry is different from the later Kodak methods and plastic tubs will retain moisture, which can destroy them. Snapshots and such from ~1930 and later will be just fine stored unmounted in acid-free folders.

I'm the oldest in my generation, the designated family historian, and so I now have (literally) several thousand photos from the 1860s through the 1990s. Mostly, I group them in folders by family and sometimes location, and I pencil a letter+numeral code number on the back (lightly). And then I have a separate sheet, or set of sheets, in each folder keyed to those numbers with all the notes I can gather and identification of people and so on. That info gets updated and expanded from time to time, and you don't want to be erasing and re-writing stuff on the back of the photo. You don't want to write that stuff on the photo itself, and you never want to write anything on a photo in ink. Pencil only!

All the photos that might conceivably be of interest to anyone else, I've scanned and organized in folders on my laptop. Many of those have been posted at one website or another, and they also are all stored at Carbonite (along with everything else on my computer). That also means I don't have to handle the physical photos very often. Ditto with most of the documents.

Also, this being hurricane and tornado country, that online storage gives me a backup in case of disaster. Even if I lose the house and the original photos, the images themselves will still exist.

One other thing -- and I can't stress this enough: There is a special circle in Dante's hell for people who LAMINATE old letters and documents in plastic. Do that, and you've just destroyed the document. FOREVER.
