To share my personal experience, I recently completed a 10 day fast; the early days were the easiest for me, and then my energy started to decline significantly on the 5th. Days 6 - 10 were a downward trend of lethargy, weakness, lighthead/dizziness, and constant nausea. I was disappointed that I couldn't stick it out for the full 21 days that I had intended, but going through that experience and feeling like it wasn't going to turn around was enough to tell me that it was time to stop. What helped was knowing that it wasn't derailed by the desire to eat, and it wasn't psychological (like a lack of willpower). It just happened that my body wasn't coping well and I didn't feel that it was in my best interest to endure for much longer. So for me, that was the best indicator of knowing when it's time to stop - and to that end, I recommend that people start off by doing shorter fasts first to see how their body adapts, particularly because the benefits of fasting tend to peak around the 72 hour mark.

To try to mitigate any potential issues or side effects from the fast, try supplementing electrolytes - particularly sodium. What works best for me is to either dissolve Celtic Sea Salt on my tongue, or take small sips of Pickle Juice. For potassium, NoSalt has a good amount per serving and can be mixed with water and taken as a shot. For magnesium, you can take it in pill form, a lotion/spray, or by soaking your feet in Epsom Salt. The latter two will be most beneficial on longer fasts. But supplementing sodium starting on the 2nd day of my own fasts has made me feel better (less brain fog, improved mood). The most beneficial amount, based on a recommendation provided on the Fasting Talk podcast, was discussed here.

HTH!

I've always wanted to try Tapenade but haven't seen it locally. Tapenade is an olive spread, and boy do I love olives. I think I added it when this video was on all the time. I actually have quite a few strange, cheap exotic foods on my wishlist. Sushi ginger isn't that strange I guess. I love it though, I love pickled anything. I feel like i could eat that stuff after any meal. And of course we have Branston pickle, an almost mystical pickle spread from the UK. I hear you either love it or think it's the worst tasting thing ever, and I love trying stuff like that!

go to sleep madysan!!

Thanks for the contest!

This one gets great reviews and seems to be the best deal over all. I've had this brand and I can vouch that it is amazingly good. But as the reviews say, it is potent. A little goes a long way, but at the same time, you get a slightly stronger drink because you don't need as much juice. I highly recommend it. My old favorite bar had this all the time because they served a TON of martinis.

u/Franco_DeMayo · 2 pointsr/funny

Totally not making shit up. They're so damn good, though. It's like an olive kinda, but then it bursts in your mouth...so much goodness. Seriously folks, tomololives are one of the best kept secrets of the south. :)

u/humanbeing2018 · 2 pointsr/fasting

yeah pickle juice for the win. I've ordered https://www.amazon.com/Best-Maid-Dill-Juice-Gal/dp/B00PYM8VLE/ref=sr_1_3_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1492688380&sr=8-3&keywords=pickle+juice

Dilute it 1 oz in sparkling water 1:10 ratio and its like a treat for me :)

u/mthmchris · 1 pointr/Cooking

Oh yeah that's totally different. Honestly, if you find it impossible to source just skip it. Here's a blogger talking about finding Yacai in a Chinese supermarket, and she actually uses precisely the same bag as us.

It's also available on Amazon here but that is pretty expensive. I'm 90% sure a Chinese supermarket would have it for cheaper. I understand shipping and all, but that same sized bag is less than one dollar in China lol

u/Alternative_Program · 2 pointsr/news

I don't remember the exact technique I used. It was a couple months back. But I don't think it was lacking flavor. It was just an overpowering "cat food" aroma that spoiled it for me.

For the occasion you do want a beef patty, you might try Schweid & Sons "The Prime Burger". I had the best burger I've ever made at home the other night with those.

Famous Dave's "Devil's Spit" Pickle Chips are also a must-have burger condiment as well IMO. They're not nearly as spicy as the name and label would suggest, but the flavor is amazing. Wickle's Pickles are a strong second-place if you can't find Devil's Spit.

u/THEthatdude · 4 pointsr/Showerthoughts

In my honest, unbiased opinion, my favorite type of pickle is the Dill Pickle Spears (link to buy if your interested :3) for a couple of reasons. One, the pickle slices just taste weird alone to me. On a hamburger they are great however they are just very strange tasting, probably because of the extra surface are to the vinegar and juices. The whole pickles are great for eating alone, however are a little too crunchy to add onto sandwiches or hamburgers. That's why I prefer the spears, I used to eat them all the time as a kid and they are about the same consistency as the slices to put on hamburgers and such. So there you go. Eat a pickle.

I don't think you're gonna do much better than using hot sauce or fresh/pickled peppers on your hot dogs if you're going for heat. Obviously you can pair different types of sauces and peppers with other ingredients.

Giardiniera is another good option but if you don't live in Chicago you may have a hard time getting some.

This is a pretty primo selection of hot dog toppings right here. I've never had the Vienna Beef giardiniera, but all their other products are pretty legit.

u/Arkay_preserve_us · 2 pointsr/xxketo

These help! For some reason the 100 cal packs are $40 on Amazon, but if you figure how many nuts you get in 17.5g it's about 5 carbs. Not a bad amount, and you can avoid the potential disasters that sugar alcohols may cause! These are great too. Some other good travel options are Bone Broth Packets, green olive snack packs, and meat sticks! Of course quest bars are always easy to find! But they're $6 at the airport. I also carry some nuun tablets with me because I'm always stressed and not drinking enough when traveling! But have fun! You got this in the bag!

u/elangomatt · 2 pointsr/AskAnAmerican

I love giardiniera on pizza as well as long as it is added after baking and not before. If it is baked with the pizza then the giardiniera gets cooked and looses the crunchiness. I too prefer the hot variety as well since I prefer the peppers over other veggies. My favorite brand is Chicago Johnnies https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00BQ4VQ8Y though Marconis is fine too.

u/HiroProtagonist1984 · 1 pointr/Pizza

Before I pay way too much for the wrong stuff, is this what you guys are talking about? Can't find any good stuff here in Texas, so I would be stoked to occasionally order pricey stuff for a special occasion. Also found some cheaper options but I'm interested to hear general advice on the best Giardiniera you can get delivered.

u/jbiz · 1 pointr/jacksonville

I tried the same thing last week for a party. I found some stuff on amazon but it was out of stock. Ended up having a friend in Chicago ship me some peppers and relish.

Looks like some stuff is back in stock: http://www.amazon.com/VIENNA-SPORT-PEPPERS-CHICAGO-DOGS/dp/B003MX1BFU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1406820550&sr=8-1&keywords=sport+peppers

u/mahlernameless · 1 pointr/keto

The citrus-juice suggestions are good. Or you can use a fruit preserver powder like:

https://www.amazon.com/Ball-Fruit-Fresh-Produce-Protector/dp/B002YI7J6E

https://www.amazon.com/Mrs-Wages-Preserver-6-Ounce-Shaker/dp/B0056QWCMC

The key ingredient is vitamin c: ascorbic or erythorbic acid. You could also just buy bulk powder and skip the fillers in the linked products.

Leaving the pit in helps because it reduces air-contact leading to oxidation. Covering tightly with plastic-wrap can buy you some time.

u/EmpressK · 1 pointr/keto

I can't stop eating Castelvetrano olives. They're the bright green ones that are crisp, super buttery and fruity. I dream about them.

u/litebrightdelight · 5 pointsr/AskAnAmerican

I love giardiniera on sandwiches and veggie burgers... but I prefer the hot variety, packed in oil and in small bits. Here a link to my preferred brand... you may find you like it!
Marconi - The Original Chicago Style Hot Giardiniera - 16 oz (2 Pack) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07174FR7Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_GAElDbCND7D95

u/Afeazo · 1 pointr/subway

Its only in Chicago area subways. It is my absolute favorite topping for any sandwich, except it sits in oil so if the employee doesnt drain it or be careful with not scooping up too much oil you get a soggy mess. When I use giardiniera at home I scoop it with a fork so not much oil comes with it. Back when I lived in Chicago, every time I got subway I always asked for 3x giardiniera.

I highly recommend you try it if you like jalapenos or spicy stuff. There is an italian style which is not popular, and there is a Chicago style which is the one everyone knows. Super good, not only do people put it on sandwiches but also on pizzas, in pasta, on hot dogs, literally on anything. Sometimes I just eat it as a side dish on its own. It is about $4-$5 a jar im Chicago but Amazon has 2 for $15, which really isnt that bad for the convenience of ordering online. Long shelf life since it sits in oil.

u/Dude_On_A_Couch · 1 pointr/AskCulinary

I have no idea what the official name would be. I just know that that's how mom makes it sometimes.

I'll take a bowl of daal with spinach, add a little plain yogurt and a little pickle (www.amazon.com/Pataks-Mixed-Pickle-10oz/dp/B000JSQDVS/ref=sr_1_8), and I've got myself a great snack that reminds me of home. And it's pretty healthy.

u/Bill_Lagakos · 1 pointr/fermentation

A couple ounces of a starter culture might help. Bubbie's works, but there are probably others.

After you have a successful ferment, you can just preserve some of the liquid and use it for future batches.

u/2_hands · 1 pointr/specializedtools

Here it is on amazon Linden Sweden Twixit Seal and Pour Bag Clip, Red

You could just use the top of a plastic bottle. You can do something like this or this

It'd take something larger for pet food, maybe like a big pickle jar? I haven't used this method for anything particularly large or with a stiffer bag material

u/Uranus_Hz · 3 pointsr/pics

Authentic Italian beef is stupid easy to make at home in a slow cooker. I do it all the time:

Dump a full jar (juice and all) pepperoncinis into slow cooker. (I sort through them and pull of all the stems)

Plop a 3 pound hunk o beef in there (chuck roast is great, top round roast works well too)

Dump One packet Italian dressing mix (I prefer ‘zesty Italian’ dressing mix) over it all

Cook on low about 8 hours, remove the pepperoncinis and shred the beef. Add a little water if needed.

Let it simmer a little longer and serve

Don’t forget the (hot or mild) G

It’s a great thing to bring to a pot luck, or for tailgating without needing to hassle with a grill.

u/LadyMO · 22 pointsr/DiWHY

I too am a lover of pickle juice. And it's possible to buy just the juice! The Single servings are pretty solid, but there is also a Gallon Jug option.

I got hooked on it after using it as a poor kids solution for nighttime leg cramps from sports. I still prefer it to most real electrolyte solutions after exercise (I know it usually only has sodium salt, but the "balanced" salt supplements taste awful).

u/thesimminlemon · 1 pointr/Disneyland

Vlasic whole dill pickles served nice and cold will fit the bill!

u/Zombies_Are_Dead · 5 pointsr/Cooking

Actually pickle juice is used in the Southern US quite often as a rehydrating drink. You can even buy just the juice. There's energy drinks and even frozen treats that are dill pickle juice based.

u/yunxing_baichi · 5 pointsr/chinesefood

This is what you want. Apparently some are from Taiwan and some are from Sichuan, I think this brand is legit.

u/dumasymptote · 1 pointr/swoleacceptance

You could try this brother.

u/BesottedScot · 1 pointr/seriouseats

Where are you based?

Here's a link to the brand I use: https://www.amazon.com/Bin-Sui-Cai-SuiMiYaCai-Vegetable/dp/B01N7T7M4X
