I'll give a bit of contrary advice/experience. I (37 yo male) had many of the same symptoms (and to a lesser extent still do, which I'll explain). Anyway, I "quit" coffee twice (cold turkey, month of Dec 2017 and Dec 2018) hoping it would be the fix for these, but honestly besides the first week of headaches didn't notice much difference. It was not the "miracle cure" I was hoping it would be. And I still wanted to have a 'hot drink' at hand all the time so re-filled mug with hot-water from the office coffee pot constantly each AM so it was just as compulsive.

You should probably still try and it may be great!! ...but for OPs list of symptoms you almost certainly need to do other things too. Especially increase water, regularly moderate exercise/fresh air, etc. So what did "help" for me?:

  • Intermittent fasting (16:8, where you do 16 hrs fasting or 8pm-noon no food and 8-hr eating (noon-8 pm), with 24-hr on some weekends...you may know about this but this FAQ is v helpful, it is simple https://www.reddit.com/r/intermittentfasting/comments/biygsj/intermittent_fasting_faq/) Helped digestion too.

If anything else if you can get yourself up and out for a 20 min phone free walk before you get ready for day - after a big glass of water - 5 days in a in a row you may be surprised. Could do this before you ty quitting coffee or before you make your coffee if you still debating quitting. Huge help with energy throughout day and "resilience" vs giving up/defeatist by default, also some improvement with posture, tension in back
  • seeing a therapist re: "cognitive behavioral therapy & general (latch onto work projects or home tasks or anything) anxiety" - what flaws in thinking ("cognitive distortions" like catastrophizing (worst case), "thought projections" (my boss is probably thinking I am screwing this up right now...No! he's busy and not thinking of you at all!), ruminating, etc.
    • Much of it similar to the Stoic philosophy stuff ("Man is troubled not by events, but by the meaning he gives them. - Epictetus", know what is in your control and what you need to accept, etc), there is no shortage of this stuff online, like dailystoic, subreddits, etc),
    • personally doing this as a Christian with Catholic-intellectual-tendencies with a Catholic therapist has been helpful (e.g. your mind and body are both good, you aren't a mind trapped in a body etc, but need to undertand interaction and limits, also God's 'Providence (not trouble avoidance) in big picture, while reflecting on parable of the talents for small picture along with the Fr Roncalli/Pope John XXIII "just for today" list which is seriously great: http://www.appleseeds.org/Decalogue_John-23.htm)
  • Hope some of this may help.It's been discouraging feeling like Ive wasted some good months of life and so I empathize. Good luck!!!   • Mary Jane's Pain Relief Salve. Not exactly legal in all US states (yet), but this stuff works better than any salve I have ever used.
  • Arnica Gel. I put this on any bruising I get from the barbell after a workout and the bruises heal much faster!

Do you mean your TSH was 80.56? Or T4 was 80.56?

TSH is Thyroid Stimulating Hormone. It is released by the pituitary gland to tell the thyroid to release more thyroid hormones. If TSH is high, that is like your pituitary glad screaming at your unresponsive thyroid, so no surprise that your thyroid hormone levels were also low. That usually indicates that you need to increase your dose.

I have Hashi's and I take 146 ish mg of NatureThroid along with Hyperbiotics PRO-15 Advanced probiotics, B-complex with coenzymes, Iron, Magnesium, Omega 3-6-9, Selenium and D3-5000IU. I have tried to reduce the number of supplements I take but they all help. I sometimes take Zinc as well. I quit coffee and take caffeine pills instead and I am (not super strictly, but working on it) gluten and soy free.

The first time I took Nature Throid after switching from generic levothyroxine all of my symptoms were about 80% GONE. We increased my dose from 1/4 grain to the current 2+1/4 grain over the course of maybe 6 months.

What really fixed things for me was going gluten and soy free and adding magnesium and selenium. The selenium reduced my antibodies from nearly 500 to 100 in six months. That alone made a huge difference. And going gluten/soy free allowed me to lose 20 lbs in a month and then maintain it pretty easily just logging my calories.

Occasionally, due to poor planning, I eat regular bread or some pizza and I am sapped of energy and achy for a week afterwards. I'm working on getting into the habit of always having gluten free options on hand. But generally speaking, I feel better than I've felt my entire life.

I've never heard of having an immune response to desiccated thyroid. I've done very well on Nature Throid. You may want to get labs done every 6 weeks to check your levels and adjust your dose as needed.

Wow, that is interesting. Well, I hope the Accutane goes well.

Some other tips for you:
- Try taking MSM powder (mixed in with water, work your way up to 15g daily, stop taking at least 8 hours before bed). It really helps me. It shouldn't be an issue with Accutane.
- Take a Zinc supplement if you aren't already (use Labdoor to find a good one).

Absolutely! Honestly, if you're not a little worried about bringing a person into the world, then you're probably not ready. That's the way I've always felt about it.

As for getting ready, now is the perfect time to pick up a copy of Taking Charge of Your Fertility, a Mabis basal body thermometer, and to find a good pre-natal vitamin and DHA supplement. I personally use a combination of Vitamin Code Raw Prenatal and Nordic Naturals DHA. They work well for me, and I got my period right when I expected to after getting my IUD taken out and have been regular as clockwork since.

I would also recommend signing up for FertilityFriend; it's the most common app we're all using, and does a great job of helping you keep track of your cycles. You don't have to go all in on temping (and if you choose not to, don't worry about the thermometer), but I've found it to be so helpful to keep my expectations in check rather than clinging to hope that "Maybe this period is just implantation bleeding".

But in terms of priority, I would highly recommend you pick up TCoYF, and getting started on a good pre-natal. Hope to see you around!

2 weeks ago I made a spreadsheet comparing the value of 40+ deals for vegan DHA supplements. The best deal I could find anywhere was DEVA Vegan algae DHA 200mg 90-Count from Amazon. It comes out to 24 cents a pill. The Spectrum Essentials was a little less per pill but with much less DHA per pill, making the DEVA a much better value.
I have Amazon Prime and free shipping so this is part of what made it a good deal. The prices at VitaCost are somewhat comparable, but the shipping makes it a lot pricier. You can get free shipping there too if you spend over 50$.

Fish eat krill, krill eat algae. Fish dont make omega 3s, they get them from krill, which get them from algae. Algae produce it from the sunlight. The biological rule of biomagnification shows that toxins increase up the supply chain. So the entire life of the fish it was fed thousands of krill. So, by eating the fish you are ingesting the toxins from thousands of krill. Over the lifespan of a krill, it eats thousands of algae, so by eating the krill you are ingesting the toxins from thousands of algae, including toxins from surrounding waters (oil, plastics and other chemicals the krill mistakingly ingests.) Since algae do not ingest anything, they have a lower risk of having negative things in their body. In addition, algae is grown in labs where pollution is monitored, instead of the ocean or a hatchery. Hatcheries usually are fed by outside water sources.

I'm sure you could also get haritaki and ashwaganda for cheap as well, but when focusing on health the most important part is have a healthy diet. Supplements make up about 1% of what you consume, with the other 99% being breakfast, lunch, dinner etc. If looking for the best bang for your buck, track nutrition on cronometer and ensure you are close to hitting all your daily values.

Go at a pace that makes you comfortable. You can try to change one meal a week, and increase week to week. So the first week you have one vegan meal, the next you have two, and so on. If you're comfortable moving faster than that, then go for it. But the key is to maintain the gains.

Also be sure you're getting b12, iodine, omegas, and possibly d3 if you test for a deficiency and/or do not get much sun. I've linked to the best brands/foods I know for getting these nutrients. If you use iodized salt, that will have iodine; but I prefer getting it from whole food sources and so I put about 1-2 tbsp of the dulse flakes in a smoothie in the morning. For omegas, I use pumpkin, hemp, and ground flax seeds (freshly ground is best) as well as the supplement I've linked. Spirulina is also a great whole food mutli-vitamin and mineral that's also very high in protein (57% by weight; compare to lean meat which is 26%).

Know your sleep cycles - each lasts 90minutes. Use sleepyti.me if you don't want to do math. This will ensure you wake up feeling refreshed rather than groggy.


Stretch in the morning. Don't do this is a rushed fashion. Slow down, breathe deeply, and feel the stretch. It should feel incredible. Stretch everything, especially your hamstrings. When you walk around afterward you should feel your weight being carried by several muscle fibers and thus have more control over your movements rather than moving your joints and having your limbs tossed about like a marionette.


Do 25 runs of a dual n'back game, like Brain Workshop. Despite the corny title, this is one of the few exercises proven to improve working memory and fluid intelligence.


Do some mental math. I like using Lizardpoint. I do 20 of each (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) of incrementally increasing integers.

Exercise. Do either 15minutes of HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training), or lift weights (do a program like Starting Strength for novices, or 5/3/1 for intermediates).


Eat a large breakfast. Do this especially if you lift. I like to start my day off with 5-6 sunny-side up eggs, and whole wheat toast.


Eat whole foods, in general. Try to get as close to whole food as possible. Whole wheat bread, steel cut oats, free-range grass-fed meat, etc. I realize this can be expensive, but it is worth it.


Get your supplements in. Most are snake oil, but make sure you get a decent multivitamin (many swear by Opti-Men or Orange Triad, I'm satisfied with Centrum Silver) and Omega 3 (make sure you get 720mg of DHA, and 480mg of EPA - many omega 3 pills don't have this, but Trader Joe's Brand has this.


Meditate.Before bed, and after waking up. As much as possible, actually. Read this to learn how.

Cycle: TTC for 22 months


Ovulation cycle day: I stopped using ovulation tests a few months ago as my cycles have always been pretty regular, and I started forgetting and didn't want to spend more money on them. I knew about when I would be ovulating, so we just made sure to hit that window. I noticed EWCM on CD 12 and my app calculated (I assume from previous history) that I ovulated on CD 16.


Relevant BD/BD method (SMEP, Shettles, etc.): BD on CD 9, 12, 14, 17 and 23!


Tracking methods and apps used: Glow app


Symptom spotting: I had fatigue and headache on CD 16 and 17 and the sore breasts began on CD 18 and haven't stopped since! I've also noticed in the past week that my nipples have been sore. The even bothered me throughout the day from rubbing on my bra! I thought it was definitely odd that my breasts were that sore for so long.


Day of positive test(s): The evening of Friday, June 2, CD 28, DPO 12! I bought a test on my way home from work because I just had a feeling. Honestly though, when I took it I was just expecting a negative, as that has always been the result. I could barely finish in the bathroom before it turned a blazing positive!! Didn't even have to use 1st morning urine!


Supplements and medications: I have been taking prenatals since before we started TTC. I wasn't sure how soon we'd conceive, so I wanted to be sure I had a good supply of nutrients in my body beforehand, in case it happened quickly. Here is the list:

New Chapter Prenatal - (3 pills a day)

NOW DHA/EPA - (1 pill a day)

Solger Folate - (1 pill a day)

Vital Proteins Beef Liver -
(I was taking 1 pill a day, now I upped it to 3 pills a day)

Viva Naturals Krill Oil - (1 pill every other day)

Great Lakes Collagen Powder - (I haven't been taking this while TTC, but I've already purchased some and will be using it every day!)


Birth control history, if relevant: I haven't been on birth control in many, many years.


Health conditions/medical tests: Chronic headaches, although I have noticed that it's pretty much food related. That and my acne. I've been eating much better the past couple months and it's made a HUGE difference. I never was tested for anything, since we were TTC for 22 months. Hubs did get tested in March and everything came back completely normal. I had my yearly checkup in July, so that was when I was going to discuss my next steps.

Other (advice, magic secrets, freaking out, miscellaneous): According to all the apps and my calculations, today I am 4 weeks, 1 day! Hubs and I couldn't be more excited!! I know it's still really early, and that scares us a little, but we've never seen a positive test before and today I AM PREGNANT! It's been a hard 22 months for the both of us, but when we saw that positive, it made it all worth it. As for how I'm feeling today: I have been cramping a little bit and my chest is still sore. No morning sickness yet, but honestly I can't wait for ALL THE SYMPTOMS! I'll be calling my doctor on Monday morning to schedule my first appointment. :D

I take Life Extension Foundation Omega-3 because I trust LEF implicitly, I wanted the best money could buy, and I sense there's a scientific justification for including olive oil extract. However, you've inspired me to do a little more research, and it looks like I could totally be saving a ton of money by using a less expensive brand without sacrificing the quality of the omega-3.. I could even double my dose and save a lot of money.

I have read that 2-3g of omega-3 oil is a 'theraputic' dose, used clinically for the amelioration of some cardiac, neurodegenerative, and inflammatory disorders. I think the more omega-3 you take, the better, but I would hesitate to exceed 2g without consulting my doctor. According to researchers at Oregon State University, contrary to the general perspective that more is better, "excess amounts of omega-3 fatty acids can alter immune function sometimes in ways that may lead to a dysfunctional immune response to a viral or bacterial infection".

I don't know an optimal dosage/ratio. This page is another good resource. Personally I take 250-500mg of Jarrow Formulas Citicoline, CDP Choline, 250mg, 120 Count. CDP-Choline is 18.5% choline by weight (vs Alpha-GPC at 40%), so that's about 46-92mg of choline, but it also contains the cytidine, which converts into uridine. It's definitely more expensive, but I think the benefits are worth it. I don't take racetams, but I know some people increase their choline intake when doing so due to possible depletion causing headaches, etc.

Regarding fish oil, I take 2000mg of Pure Alaska Omega-3 Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil 1000mg Softgels 180-Count, which contains 220mg DHA and 180mg EPA per serving (400mg Omega-3). Some people take more concentrated forms to get more Omega-3, but I prefer the sort of whole food approach. It's important to note the distinction between 1g fish oil vs 1g of Omega-3. Keep that in mind when making comparisons and doing research to determine your goals.

I found the prenatals with iron made me feel really crummy (even when taken with food or at night). I’ve been alternating between Olly Prenatal Gummies and Whole Foods / 365 Gummies (they have the same amounts of each vitamin and are both yummy).

I live in the PNW and Vitamin D deficiency is a real issue up here, so I’ve been taking an extra vitamin D gummy as well (doc gave me a high five when I told her).

Also on days that I don’t eat fish (which is most days these days) I’ll do a couple tbsp of Barlean’s Omega Swirl Fish Oil. The lemon flavor is DELISH. No fishy taste or aftertaste. Can’t really get too much fish oil, great for your joints and baby’s neural development.

ETA: because I’m not doing Iron supplements I try to eat plenty of iron-rich foods, and if you pair it with a vitamin C-rich food you’ll have better absorption.

Diabetic meal plans are the same as any healthy meal plan. You should eat 4-6 15g servings of carbs per meal, depending on how many calories you need. There's a picture of the proportions of types of food to get at the bottom of the PDF.

For tiredness and depression, be sure to eat your meals, and try some caffeine. I drink a half can of pepsi with my lunch if I want a pick-me-up. Take fish oil daily. Find a fun way to get exercise into your daily schedule. The human body and brain needs a vigorous 20 minute workout almost every day to stay healthy and feeling good. Perhaps there's a beach on your drive home you can stop by for a skate, or something. You'll have to search for what you find fun.

I’m not familiar with the combination, but I’m the kind of vegetarian who occasionally eats fish and takes fish oil supplements. Omega 3 is very important and can’t really be replaced with vegetables, although algae omega 3 algae omega 3 is a possible substitute, though it’s a bit more expensive.

Personally, I’ve been vegetarian/pescatarian for the past 17 years, and I’ve found I feel best when I eat more fat (olive oil, butter, whole milk yogurt). Try not to substitute meat with carbs. Better to substitute meat with plant/animal fats and veggies.

My [old] assumption was that fish oil was more or less a commodity and therefore I did not care about brand much as long as it was cheap. I kinda changed my mind a few years ago after I met a tri-athlete friend who works for an OTC manufacturer.

Aside from being a super-finicky eater, he also got to pick virtually anything he likes from the world of supplements - no matter how exotic or expensive. That's why I asked him the question of which one he'd pick if he could have ONLY one. He answered "fish oil". Then after I told him that as far as I was concerned, when it came to supplements, I more or less bought the cheapest type, I challenged him to convince me why a skeptic like me would pay the extra premium for the brand he recommended which is available at... Costco ... "Pure Alaska Omega" made from "wild Alaskan salmon". [ You can also order it from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Pure-Alaska-Omega-Natural-Omega-3/dp/B0024LWRIQ ]

He explained that the source being wild salmon caught up in Alaska means that they don't have the existing amounts of mercury or PCBs ... unlike other sources that do (and need to be heat distilled etc). I was wondering how they could extract oil from what is a pretty damned expensive gourmet product so he explained the producers have a relationship and joint venture with one of the largest fish processors up in Alaska called TRIDENT http://www.tridentseafoods.com/ . The JV is called Alaska Protein Recovery: http://alaskaproteinrecovery.com/index.html

Apparently, the highest concentrations of DHA and EPA oils are in the heads which were normally trashed or converted into fish meal products like pet food and fertilizer. The JV company has a special barge with a fish oil processor onboard that intercepts the freshly-caught salmon before they are unloaded at the Alaskan fishery, lops off the heads, converts it into oil (similar to cold-pressing olive oil) and the rest of the salmon is sent to the fishery for processing.

Because there aren't existing PCB or mercury contamination issues, they don't need to heat-distill the fish oil. Combined with the fact that the fish weren't semi-rotting in the boat on the way to the fishery as it is supposed to be the case with sardine, anchovy, and menhaden (the source of most other fish oils on the market) which are generally caught in more temperate climes ... it means you don't get the stale fishy taste or after-taste issues... and that was probably my main complaint about fish oil supplements. You still definitely need to take them with meals - preferably during ... not just immediately afterwards.

    I will probably pick up some cheap 5-HTP and Rhodiola form NOW just to try out.

    I am wondering if I will be getting too much Vitamin D from this as the multi has 2,000UI and the D+K has 5,000UI... The multi doesn't have K and that D+K supplement looks pretty good, especially with the added Iodine... does this combo look like I might be overdoing it?

Like others I take the garden of Life prenatal. It's vegetarian, but that's not why I got it as I am definitely a meat eater. I looked for folate instead of folic acid as well. They suggest three a day and with you mentioning issues with absorbing them this might help by taking one, three times daily.

I have done a lot of research into fish oils (I hope it shows!), and settled on these guys (and here is the label). I take three a day, which gives you the recommended dose of EPA and DHA for treating depression and also gives you 100% DV of vitamin E.

I'm very happy with that product for quality and value, but really any highly-refined omega-3 fish oil concentrate tested for heavy metals and pollutants will do the same thing.

Not really germane to the sub, but as a fellow old lady with acne, I've found something that works.

Now I go around telling everyone like an obnoxious religious convert.

I'd bought a high DHA fish oil for my son (it's supposed to help with depression and ADHD symptoms) and he told me it completely cleared up his acne.

Now we're not allowed to run out of it.

At the time, I was like "yeah, probably not what helped" but I gave it a shot myself because why not, and fish oil is recommended for other things anyway. I haven't broken out in over a year. It's kind of amazing.

Where was this stuff in high school?

There are two types of omega 3 fatty acids. The first type are the long-chain fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA). These are the animal derived fatty acids. They are the biologically relevant molecules for the presumed benefits of omega 3 consumption (cardiovascular, inflammatory, etc.)

The second type of omega 3 is the short-chain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). ALA is not biologically useful and must be converted to a long-chain fatty acid by the liver. Unfortunately the conversion process is slow and incomplete so one cannot reach pharmacologically relevant omega-3 levels by consuming ALA alone.

ALA is the only kind found in plants. But your body can convert that to EPA and DHA. to my knowledge we convert ala to epa easier than ala to dha. we can also take vegan versions of such things made from algae. lifes dha is vegan and is sometimes added to thinks like silk soymilk (it will say dha or omega 3 on the front) and also they added it to certain kinds of crisco canola oil. the jury is still "out" as to whether or not we need to supplement our diets with dha or not.

I have some of the Carlson's now, but I think when I run out I'm going to go with the Costco ones. I recently did the math and, even though I'd have to double up on the Costco ones to get as much EPA and DHA, it's still cheaper. If you do stick with the Carlson's though, get the regular ones from Amazon. You get 124 of 'em for about $16.

edit: by my math...

for the Carlson's that I linked to, it's 4,034mg of both EPA and DHA per dollar (124 capsules x 500mg/capsule @ $15.38)
for the Kirkland it's 8,000mg of EPA+DHA per dollar (180 capsules x 684mg/capsule @ $15.39)

Twice as much of the good stuff per dollar with the Kirkland brand.

I'm doing Nordic Naturals - Prenatal DHA, (500 mg) in addition to MegaFood - Baby & Me, Prenatal & Postnatal Support. I chose this combination after a post someone put up about how the FDA doesn't fully regulate the amount of nutrients put in vitamins and another commenter kindly posted this link.

Have you tried regular cold-pressed oil vs. an essential oil? I only link these because I know and trust these vendors/brands, and that they all do lab testing on their products (in fact for this reason I exclusively use RMO for my essential oils)..

Amazingherbs is one of the big reputed brands that people use. Pipingrock is another more affordable good one, but i didn't see any on amazon.ca (i didn't search for pipingrock specifically, just black seed oil.) -- you might be able to find it if you search for it.

Too much of anything will not help. You're getting way too much EPA, which has potent anti-inflammatory effects, and perhaps not enough DHA. The beginning recommended ratio is 2:1, and starting dose is around 1000mg DHA/500mg EPA.

I've been getting mine from Amazon. This one. It's the only one I've found without carrageenan which my bowels don't like. The amount of carrageenan in a capsule may be too little to matter.

I also take b12, D3 (fungus derived), a multivitamin, and a tiny dose of calcium carbonate (stirred into oats or whatever). The b12 is a 1000 mcg tablet take at four-day intervals, and the D3 is 5000 IUs taken at two-day intervals.

I use Source Naturals Omega-3. It was the cheapest on Amazon. I think there’s only 1 plant in the US that makes this so they’re all probably the same except Opti3 because they’re UK based.

I’ve read that heat can inactivate or destroy the omega 3 fatty acids so I only order this in the winter. I just increase my flax intake during the summer.

True, I have looked at this one algae product that seems promising, but is (probably, rightfully) expensive.

Are you aware of any alternative brands?

I'm also not sure if the levels of DHA and EPA are sufficient in this particular bottle.

EDIT: This was the one brand that I had heard of before. Some of the other ones may or may not have been fly by operations. No idea.

I bought some, but when I take it there is a nasty aftertaste in my mouth for about 6 hours afterward, and I wouldn't be surprised if it is on my breath it is so strong. Does your brand leave the insanely strong aftertaste mine does?

I'd suggest trying a different brand because maybe the one you have is low quality or has gone rancid. I take this one and it has never made me sick (though I have had some rank burps). I don't eat fish at all so I don't have much of a choice in the matter, since studies say it is really important to have that nutrient in addition to the prenatals. This article lists the types of fish that have the most of it, if you want to try the diet route instead. I'm taking like 8 pills a day for this baby and I hate it!
