If money is not a concern... allow me to recommend a Bluestar range as a BIFL appliance.

I actually got the Platinum model about a year ago, and I am very much in love with it. It's drop-dead simple and built like a tank, and comes with the power. We do a lot of stir-frying, and you really need something like this unless you want to go outside and set up on a turkey fryer or a grill.

As a bonus, the whole cooking surface is cast iron, which really suits me for the cleanup. I absolutely hate spraying stainless steel... but with this guy, I now deep fry regularly without batting an eye. Grease spots? Pfftt, rub 'em in and call it seasoning. With the open burners, the crap falls through to the grease trays; dump 'em out once a week or so and run 'em through the dishwasher on pots & pan cycle - all good.

You will need a good vent hood to go above it.

I would also plug our Liebherr side-by-side refrigerator/freezer, which totally kicks ass and has been very reliable, but I don't think Liebherr sells their residential equipment in USA.

I can recommend a Bosch dishwasher with the cutlery tray. Miele also makes great dishwashers. I am looking to install a second dishwasher; double dishwashers are a godsend if you really cook.

Lot of love in this thread for the Instant Pot - I just got one for like $60 past Black Friday, and it's a decent piece of gear, very versatile and convenient... but my favorite countertop kitchen gadget is actually the Cuisinart steam oven. I guess people haven't yet hopped on the combi oven bandwagon? Anyway it's pretty fantastic, with the caveat that internal volume is pretty small. If I had the space in the kitchen I would absolutely install one of Miele's wall combi ovens, but for less than $250 the Cuisinart has got me going and had a big impact. Steam-baked proteins are top quality and cook very fast; proofing and baking bread with steam injection; custards and pastries of all types... and it reheats leftovers with far less loss of quality than the microwave. It's great.

u/SVAuspicious · 1 pointr/Cooking

The answer for you depends on what your priorities and skill level are.

If the idea of using steam to reheat things like lasagna sounds good to you then a skillet for reheating is attractive.

You can easily make toast in a dry skillet BUT you really can't walk away from it like a toaster or a toaster oven. I crank out a lot of toast from skillets semi-professionally; it doesn't take long to get the hang of it.

Someone else recommended a convection microwave (https://www.amazon.com/Cuisinart-CMW-200-1-2-Cubic-Foot-Convection-Microwave/dp/B001C2J0FG) which is great for reheating, cooking prepared foods (aka TV dinners), and small portion cooking. The problem with convection microwaves is that by the time you find one with a broiler element for toast the prices are pretty high - on the order of $500 I believe. That gets back to your priorities. If you want toast regularly including variants like bagels or Pop-Tarts then something that really toasts becomes more important. Interestingly toaster ovens generally don't make very good toast either. *sigh*

You'll see a lot of discussion about countertop ovens as a substitute for full-size ovens particularly in hot weather. Certainly they do have merit for that. In my view they have huge value as a supplement. If your oven is full of stuffed roast pork loin and roast veg and you squeezed in a casserole of mac and cheese the countertop oven gives you chance to make or at least warm rolls or biscuits.

My tendency would be a convection microwave (we'll buy one like that linked above if our old microwave fails) and a two-slot toaster (https://www.homedepot.com/pep/Hamilton-Beach-Classic-2-Slice-Chrome-Wide-Slot-Toaster-22790/205438980?mtc=Shopping-BA-F_HDH-G-D29B-29_28_SMALL_ELECTRICS-MULTI-NA-Feed-PLA-NA-NA-Toasters&cm_mmc=Shopping-BA-F_HDH-G-D29B-29_28_SMALL_ELECTRICS-MULTI-NA-Feed-PLA-NA-NA-Toasters-71700000048985548-58700005310601557-92700047118403883&gclid=CjwKCAiA5JnuBRA-EiwA-0ggPZ6liUy5dvCNTAT70hOoIGPXuZlqcouA0ngZXDXl2nrJFosSX7veiBoCwa0QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds). If you make a lot of toast you'll find a place for it on your counter or a shelf and if not it will fit nicely in a cabinet.

The last however is MY answer and may not be YOUR answer.

I just bought a new one to replace my Panasonic Flash Xpress not because it was broken, but because there is a newer version of it HERE it seems to be exclusive to Walmart, at the moment. I did cook some toast, and it turned out well, 2 min 30 in a cold oven, the next batch was a little under 2. I found the rack needs to be in the middle to produce even toasting on both sides, the bottom rack is to hot on the bottom. To copy my own post from last night.

Just to let you know, I found one of the new ones at Walmart so I bought it.

Thus far so good, I bought a cheap loaf of bread just to test it and all the toast turned out good. I tried them both side by side, and they take the exact amount of time, and it's difficult to tell the pieces of toast apart, exactly the same. The controls are better, but still require a few more button pushes then I would like. I put an oven thermometer in it and turned it on at 350 for 10 minutes and the thermometer read 360, which is pretty good.

It has an adjustable rack and a pan which fits in the slots, something the old one didn't have. The interior is a dark(er) non-stick which should keep it at least looking cleaner then the old one. It's significantly bigger as well, and while I can't fit a full sized lasagna pan in it I can fit my half sized casserole dishes which won't fit in the old one, and I would guess a full broiler chicken would fit as well.

The bottom IR "lights" have been replaced with standard metal conducting coils, but on the top side there are now 3 IR lights as opposed to the one before. The timer now goes up to 2 hours as opposed to the 25 minutes of the last one. It also has a convection fan, which moves air around and it very quiet, not something I got to use yet but it's there.

I have dinner plans tonight otherwise I would have bought a frozen lasagna or something just to test it, but thus far I really like it. Enough that I have premtivly packed the flash xpress into a box to give away to a friend.

Hope this finds you well, and I'm sorry about a reply to such an old post, I was searching reddit for info on the new toaster oven when I stumbled on one of my old comments.

u/CelticMara · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Hi and thank you.

If you mean utensil like a spoon or spatula I can hold in my hand, it would be this silicone spatula. It's just the perfect size and shape to fit nicely in my hand and be useful for many dishes, from mixing to cooking. Not so much serving, but it is really good at what it does.

But if you meant anything I use in the kitchen that is not actual food, it would be the Breville Convection Oven. It is the perfect little oven, turning out great muffins, pizza, chicken, toast, leftovers... Truly, it is a powerhouse of awesome that we use constantly, and by constantly, I mean more than once every single day. And it doesn't heat up the whole kitchen. I can find no down sides to this thing, and that makes me happy.

Honestly, it's one of the reasons I learned how to cook - it was just so much of a hassle taking risks, especially when dining out. I eventually limited myself to only trying new products on the weekend, and kept a product spreadsheet of what worked & what didn't, although sometimes products would change & I'd get a reaction to them.

It was certainly educational learning about all of the substitutions available on the market...coconut aminos in place of soy sauce, Otto's cassava flour in place of all-purpose flour, and more advanced stuff like homemade nixtamalized corn tortillas using a cast-iron press & keeping them warm in an microwavable insulated tortilla warmer.

I went through probably 35+ appliances trying to find the right combination of safe ingredients & convenience for meal-prepping, as it seemed like EVERYTHING has a huge hassle when it came to food sensitivities. Over the years, I eventually settled on just a handful of truly worthy appliances, including:

  • Instant Pot (electric pressure cooker)
  • Sous Vide (temperature-controlled water-bath) & vacuum-sealer
  • Deli slicer
  • Oster Smoker Roaster with no-filler pellets
  • Baking Steel
  • Breville Smart Oven Air (particularly for the proofing, airfryer, and dehydrator functions)

Being restricted was difficult because it limited what safe options were available to you, and you get tired of getting sick all the time trying new stuff, so after testing lots & lots of kitchen gadgets, I finally got a good group of machines together that gave amazing, consistent results. The Instant Pot & Sous Vide units are two of my most-used machines. I use the deli slicer (you can find them for $99 on Amazon, no need to get a $500+ commercial unit) with the sous-vide & smoker a lot, primarily for homemade deli meat, because Boar's Head GF deli meat was getting super-expensive (almost $10/pound now!).

The smoker is super awesome because you don't have to invest in a $500+ pellet smoker or be a BBQ whiz...just plug it in, add some pellets to both cups, and set the temperature! It works excellent in combination with sous-vide-cooked meats as well. The Baking Steel was hugely helpful for making good-quality baked goods, especially pizza:

Otto's flour, while it doesn't rise like wheat flour, makes for some surprisingly good baked products, including baguettes that you can bake directly on the steel surface:

  • https://www.ottosnaturals.com/blogs/recipes/gluten-free-crunchy-french-bread
  • https://www.ottosnaturals.com/blogs/recipes/simple-country-bread

This ultimately led to a pretty nice meal-prep system, because I could both control cross-contamination, but also create some legitimately good food (and not just "good for gluten-free"). And as this is a Soylent sub-reddit, don't forget that DIY blends exists! So you can always make your own GF version of Soylent. Tons of recipe ideas available on the Complete Foods website:

The thing I always tell people with food issues was not to expect miracles from the food industry, particularly the restaurant business. I've worked in food service and can tell you that everyone is busy, under-staffed, under-paid, and largely vastly under-educated in regards to food allergies. If you're expecting not to get a food reaction based on some kid getting paid minimum-wage in the back of the house to carefully prepare your food for you, you're playing with fire, it's as simple as that.

That's important to understand because it's so easy to push the responsibility on someone else, but we're the ones stuck with the reactions. I used to have a coworker who would come out to lunches with our group & then get furious when his food caused a reaction in his body - which is a normal reaction, except it was nearly every single week at nearly every restaurant we went to, at which point he should have realized that eating out simply & expecting to feel great simply wasn't in the cards for him, but he didn't want to to accept personal responsibility for it.

Which is also totally understandable, because I didn't realize what a burden gets lifted off of you when you get take-out or dine in at a restaurant or even just grab some fast-food at a drive-through or just pick up some snacks at a corner store, until I had to live with food allergies for a time. It can be amazingly stressful not to just eat whatever you want, whenever you want to!

I wish that the food labeling laws were more stringent & covered more bases, because I do think the food industry is in dire need of further accountability, but unless you want to dedicate your life to fighting that battle, having to come up with a different solution is the route everyone with food problems has to go down at some point. Hopefully someday, things will improve even further! Great technology is becoming available & more & more companies are paying attention to the issues & doing a better job with labeling & creating alternative food options, which is really cool!

I would highly recommend this model https://www.amazon.com/Breville-BOV900BSS-Convection-Brushed-Stainless/dp/B01N5UPTZS

The airfry option is amazing and it works so much better than traditional air fryer designs. Not sure what the price match is for Amazon on the model you are looking at but I think it's absolutely worth it for the airfry or "super convection" mode they call it. I find myself using it when I just quite can't something to crisp up like I like. A few minutes at 450 on super convection always does the trick.

Both will fit the pan you are looking at but NOT the model pryex makes with the extra big handles.

I can't say enough good things about these ovens. I cook all the time using an oven all most daily and I've used my big oven maybe 10 times in the last two years now.

You'll be happy with either one but I say go for the air fry :)

Alllllllright, hello! Thanks for hosting such an awesome gauntlet!

These aren't in order, sorry lol.

  • The Cephalopod This picture is so flippin cool, it's all lit up. I wanna hug itttt

  • I think this might be my all time favorite striping tape mani I've ever seen. And this is a close runner-up because glitter!

  • Hello Kitty :D because no, seriously, how cool is this?! It makes Hello Kitty in your freaking toast!

  • You. Are. Going. To. Love. This. I make this all the time. And you can change it up so much, you can add some other flavored liquors, or syrups. It's light, it's refreshing, and it's so easy to make!

  • As for the story... I went on a small vacation to see my little nieces first ballet recital. It was about a two and a half hour drive, which wouldn't have been bad at all, the recital was at six. Buuuut, we had to move that day. Like, be out of our apartment for good that day. So we got up early as hell, busted ass all day, and headed out. My boyfriend and I both got really, really sick. The drive sucked, we missed most of the recital because I felt so sick that I couldn't stop crying, and I was so over heated that I had to keep leaving the hall. It was so awful. My niece was great, though.

Okay, ahh, I think I got it all :D I hope the Hello Kitty thing didn't have to be nail related :/ But I saw that toaster and I wanted it haha.

Thanks for the gauntlet! It's a wonderful opportunity!

Edit: for the polishes, can I say "Surpise me!!!"? Haha I've never had essies before so they'd all be wonderful!

In my experience searching for similar things, the conclusion I reached was that to get anything better than the T962 (which is utter shit, to be clear) you need to spend several thousand dollars.

I took the plunge on building a reflow oven using this toaster and a Controleo 2, plus copious amounts of expensive tape and some ceramic blanket insulation from McMaster-Carr. Do NOT use the felt crap on Amazon that's intended for cars, the temperature ratings are horseshit and are for "radiant" heat, they won't actually stand up to 2,000deg or even 500.

It took about a week of 1-2 hours per day, but the result was well, well worth it. It's performed absolutely flawlessly the last 2 years and reflows beautifully every time. Lead-free BGAs are no problem, it's been stellar. I probably spent something like $500 on it but you can do it for less. The oven was $200, ceramic blanket roll about $40, extra reflective tape ~$100, plus other odds and ends.

One thing I did with that toaster was use thin aluminum sheet metal to make "shields" for the upper heating elements so there is no direct IR on the boards. Combined with a convection oven, this goes a long way towards ensuring even heating and no hot-spots. Much better than scorching a batch of boards you spent the entire day assembling as I've done with the T962.

The oven I got is probably overkill, it works well but due to the size the reflow cycle runs on the long side. Still within the IPC spec, however.

IMHO it's the only way to go unless you're willing to pony up for a proper commercial oven. The only thing that might be better is vapor-phase reflow which you can accomplish for relatively little (the fluid is extremely expensive however), but that method is also more labor intensive.

Keep in mind that with any oven you should profile it - really just do a test run - before putting in a batch of boards. The worst that will happen if you've done it right is that the solder might not reflow everywhere. When that happens I bump the peak temperature up by 5-10deg C and run it again, but it's better to get it the first time while the flux is still active. Profiling is simple, I take 2-3 random bare PCBs I have laying around, put a few blobs of whatever solder paste I'm using on the pads, and put them on opposite ends of the oven. Run a cycle and if it reflows you're pretty much good to go. Takes 5 minutes.

So yeah, not to pimp my oven too hard but for the situation you're in I'd say 100% build your own. Getting better results will require you spending 5-10x as much.

EDIT: Assembly pics for the curious! I threw them all in there, sorry they're out of order. That grey stuff was the "ULTRA OMG HIGH TEMP RACECAR" insulation from Amazon I used on the first attempt. Do not want. Only after I put it all in there I realized it shouldn't be in contact with a 500deg oven. Gets a little melty. I ended up getting this ceramic blanket from McMaster which is the white insulation you see later. I added it to the window after testing without because it cuts own on heat loss dramatically and makes it easier to hit the right profile. It gets everywhere though and is very itchy, similar to fiberglass insulation, so be warned. Once it's assembled then no worries.

You can also see the shields I added to the upper heating elements to eliminate direct IR.

> Anyway, I have this breakfast sandwich maker. I'm generally morally opposed to uni-taskers but I got it at a gift swap kind of thing. You plug it in and it simultaneously toasts an English muffin, cooks an egg, and heats a sausage patty. And it's pretty small so I think it's proven itself worthy.

I have this unit! (or one like it)

So I make my own turkey sausage patties and I freeze them.

Turkey Sausage Egg Muffin

Update from: https://redd.it/2lrnqr - Veggie Burger Egg Muffin

I'm a big fan of the McDonald's Sausage McMuffin with egg. And at 450 calories, I'd still eat one in an emergency. But it has 28 grams of fat and when you're eating on a calorie budget, you cut where you can. So here's my version -- I have it 5 days a week:

Ingredients:

  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil, just a drop to keep the egg from sticking to the pan
  • Fat Free Sharp Cheddar Cheese, 1 wrapped slice
  • Grade A Large Egg, White, 1 egg (poached with yoke broken)
  • Light or Multigrain English Muffin, 1 muffin
  • Turkey Sausage, 2 oz. patty link:https://redd.it/3za32h

Pictures: http://imgur.com/a/k3Ja1 (pictured with Morningstar's veggie patty, which I was using earlier)

If you like this, invest in one of these: http://www.geekalerts.com/egg-and-muffin-2-slice-toaster-and-egg-poacher/ Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/West-Bend-TEM500W-Muffin-Toaster/dp/B008YNFB3Q/

You can make this with an egg poacher or a egg ring to keep the egg the size of the English Muffin. Assemble any way you'd like. Add black pepper to taste.

Glad I could help! If you're curious, the oven I'm using for this (and all my keto needs) is the Breville BOV800XL Smart Oven and a good set of Lodge Logic cast iron skillets (specifically the 5-inch version that can fit one or two steaks at a time, but the oven will hold the 10-inch model just fine).

I'm going to sound like a salesman here, but that oven honestly changed the way I eat. It's crazy expensive next to the swarm of other "toaster ovens", but without questions its the best and most used item in my kitchen. It's been a keto lifesaver for me (and uses a ton less energy than my normal oven).

u/Ohthere530 · 1 pointr/keto

You might also consider a steam oven. I've used this on both steak and salmon and it works great. Somehow it feels easier than wrapping things and heating a big bowl of water. You can also get built-in steam ovens, but this thing is basically an overgrown toaster oven.

At first I steamed my steak (130 degrees for medium rare) and then seared it in a frying pan to finish, one minute on each side, but then I bought a blow-torch. I'm pretty sure the steak tastes better after being torched, but I'm absolutely sure that I have more fun.

u/sirJ69 · 3 pointsr/BuyItForLife

One of my favorites is an electric griddle. I also have a cast iron one I enjoy, but I do like the fact I can cook "away" from the stove. There are a number of them out there, but the more real estate the better.

We also added a toaster oven like this http://amzn.com/B001L5TVGW I cannot speak to the BIFL, but it is built well and I use it for 95% of my baking (I can get a Calphalon 9x13 in there with no problem).

Speaking of Calphalon, I have been infinitely pleased with their cookware and bakeware. Their baking pans are amazing and should really last.

I absolutely adore my Breville BOV800XL toaster oven.

Costs a bit, but this was definitely my pick after searching around. Couldn't be happier. There's just two of us, and we do most of our baking/heating/broiling in this thing. Saves money, and doesn't heat up the whole kitchen when you just need a couple of chicken breasts or to broil a sandwich.

One caveat; If toast is important to you, this is not the greatest toaster in the world. It makes adequate toast at best. But as a small oven and a broiler, it absolutely rocks. Most powerful broiler you can buy in a toaster oven.

u/dafragsta · 1 pointr/fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

It might seem overkill by contrast to a timer, and you have to reset the cooking time almost every time you put something in because it doesn't give you a buffer of time from the point that it beeps to tell you it's reached the cooking temperature, but I really have to recommend the Breville Motherfucking Smart Oven. The best thing to happen to ovens since ovens. It turns off when your pizza is done and there is no way it will burn it if you put the right time in. It's also a convection oven, so it has really good temperature distribution and the "hot spot" issue is well under control. It's one of those things that is kind of expensive, but as soon as I got it, I realized it was worth every penny, and I use it almost exclusively in place of the big oven. It's a lot larger than most toaster ovens while still fitting on a shelf and more than likely you'd have room for it in a dorm room as long as it didn't trip the breaker. It's also a really good toaster and broiler. I also like that it requires far less time for heating than a full-size oven and doesn't heat up the entire kitchen.

u/shadmere · 2 pointsr/toasterovenmasterrace

I honestly don't know, for that price point. Over the course of a couple years, I had several toasters ovens that cost between $50 and $80 barely work at all, break, or actually catch fire. I only found one that seems to work really well and haven't heard anyone having problems, and it's this Breville. Out of your price range, but I really think it's likely to last a lot longer than an 80 dollar one.

Good luck! You might just end up having a lot better luck than I had. Maybe those toasters weren't all crap and I just kept getting lemons, haha.

u/papermageling · 1 pointr/Baking

The Breville Smart Oven is fantastic. I've got this version, which is a bit cheaper than the one you linked to. It's also smaller, but it's usually not a big problem (although I have sometimes made bread that rose a bit too close to the heating element and burned a bit on top. But it was still delicious). I do have a (vintage) 12 cup muffin pan that will fit in the toaster oven, although it is the type with closely spaced cups that tends to result in the tops running together. I think there's a Nordic Ware one that'll fit too.

Anyway, it heats way, way more evenly than your standard oven, so it's much easier to bake in that many of them. In a typical oven, filling the space very full causes a lot of problems (putting two 9x13s side by side in my full size oven always results in some burning, and it's actually a reasonably good oven), but the Breville not only fits a 9x13, it also cooks it evenly.

u/jmottram08 · 2 pointsr/Cooking

I dunno... I would be interested in a toaster oven that can be programmed and can steam as well.

Obviously the pre-prepared meals are not for me (or most people in here)... but the idea of an oven that can automatically (for example) use convection and then switch to broil at the last minute is a fantastic idea. Imagine pairing it with a temperature probe... just throw a chicken in and it uses convection (and maybe a bit of steam) until the temp is close, then finishes with a broil, then switches to "stay warm" mode.

That sounds like a huge time saver.

Or even (if it were a bit larger) baking bread... steam injection bread ovens are expensive... but this thing has all the parts for just that.

I am surprised that "regular" ovens aren't programmable yet...

EDIT: as someone pointed out... it's basically this with a barcode reader and a different controller.

If it were bigger i would buy it in a heartbeat.

u/fsr1967 · 1 pointr/airfryer

I have a different Breville, and I'm very happy with it. Comparing the two, it looks like mine has a 2-speed fan (vs 1 speed), has 1 more heating element, is larger, and has a dehydrate function.

I can't say whether that would make a difference in functionality. But I will say that the thing is incredibly well built, works well, is easy to clean, etc.

Ok maybe I need to clarify
I ordered a steam/convection oven but it isnt a true combi oven.
I ordered this

and I hope it will allow me to cook a few things like bread better than the regular oven.

I dont have the space for a true combi oven. There appear to be a bunch for sale in Portland on CL.

u/uerb · 2 pointsr/cynicalbritofficial

My mother bought one before me, so I had tasted the food "fried" with it before buying one. I have this model, but I don't think that it exists in the US. It's not the same model or brand as hers (she lives in another country), but mine and hers have so many similar elements that I'm sure that it's the same thing but with a different exterior shell.

The principle behind all air fryers is the same: superheat the air and blast it on the food. What changes from model to model (other than build quality) is the power (higher is better) and the frying compartment. Nowadays you have some like this one. More expensive, but more versatile and it also works as an oven.

About the taste of the food: despite all the ads, don't expect it to be the same thing as deep frying. The food is a lot more crunchy and tasty than frozen fried stuff heated with a convection oven, and you can do some stuff that end up too greasy with with deep frying (like the ribs), but it's not the same thing as deep frying - the oil entering the food makes a difference.

For me it was worth it. The food ends up healthier than deep frying, but still good and crunchy enough (adding flour really helps with the crunchiness). It's a good alternative if you want to lose some weight and / or reduce the amount of fat that you are eating, but don't want to eat chicken breasts every single day.

Grab one of these toasters to make the egg boiling process even easier! I know boiling water isn't hard - but I've always hated using the stove and having to clean a big pot. This toaster is GREAT! You put the water in and up to 4 eggs, press one button and 10 minutes later you have PERFECT hard boiled eggs. Just thought I'd share!

I had the same issue recently. I ended up getting a nice counter top convection/toaster oven and I love it! It bakes faster than the oven I used to use so if you got one, I would recommend doing some research on adjusting bake times for a convection oven.

The only downside is the size, really. But that usually just means it takes more loads for cookies, etc. You can bake anything in it that you would bake in a normal oven, as long as it fits.

The one I use and love is:

Breville Convection Oven

I bake a lot so I splurged on my oven, but you can get a good convection/toaster oven for a lot less too. I would shop around and decide what features you want it to have.

Also, If you end up getting a convection oven, remember when using it to not have it's back against the wall because it needs some clearance or it might overheat/damage the oven.

Hope you find something that works for you! : )

u/Serf99 · 3 pointsr/gadgets

The value of the induction system is that the metal surface that the food lays gets hot rather than having heated coils with a fan that moves hot air around of the traditional convection system.

The advantages is direct heat being applied to the food much like a stove top; convection systems tend to dry out the food as it takes longer to get to the interior of what you are cooking (which is why you do compensative measures like basting or putting foil over the food). Also traditional convection ovens take longer for heat to radiate through larger foods; which is why you often have cool or cold centers.

This oven also has an infrared system to cook the surface of the food (while the induction system cooks from the bottom). This is likely from Panasonic's FlashXpress line of ovens that is currently on the market (which uses ceramic for near infrared and quartz for far infrared).

It should lead to shorter cook times and moister foods, however, the traditional convection oven is still likely better where cooking with hot air is needed. Such as many types of frozen foods (fries, chicken nuggests, etc.). Not to mention being an order of magnitude cheaper.

u/plaitedlight · 3 pointsr/Breadit

You'd have to have something that could get and stay pretty hot. Most toaster ovens aren't going to have a consistent enough heat.

But, there are pretty good counter top ovens out there. Something like the Breville Smart Oven maybe.

u/Affirmcation · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Toaster oven: I always suggest Cuisinart. They make a good small kitchen appliance. Reliable, and while more expensive than others, it's worth it.

Microwave: You may never have time to cook an actual meal.

Cooking utensils: Calphalon Nylon. Good value.

Crockpot: Showing up on a lot of suggestions. A mini will serve you well unless you're feeding large quantities of people.

Dish rack, a sturdy (large) trash can, laundry bags and smart storage, and kitchen shears.

I need to weigh in that the dryer method is not only dangerous but also really embarrassing. I had the unfortunate experience of trying to explain to the local fire marshall and property management why I had started a fire in a common area. In the end we agreed to disagree and I moved to a different unit that had a washer and dryer in the unit.

I didn’t want to risk another dispute with the property management and decided to find a better solution. I used to do research and development and helped create several products you may commonly use today. With my background and experience I undertook this challenge in finding a way to properly warm my daipers. I experimented with many different ideas and solutions and ultimately came up with the “hot pocket method”. I know it sounds absurd but hear me out and your life will be changed forever.

Step 1:
30/45 minutes before you are ready to change take your diaper and wrap it in aluminum foil like a hot pocket. I suggest using the Reynolds’s heavy duty wrap ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00OBGVUQM/ ) , I attempted to use the Walmart brand and it resulted in another embarrassing dispute with property management. And let’s be honest if you have even a single fiber or moral compass you won’t support Walmart. (Support your local small businesses please).

Step 2:
Set your toaster oven to broil and set a timer for 17 minutes and place the pocket directly in the center. Again I’ve tested this with multiple products and endorse the Breville BOV650XL ( https://www.amazon.com/Breville-BOV650XL-Compact-Smart-Stainless/dp/B00357YS3A/ )

Step 3:
After the 17 minutes has completed remove the pocket from the appliance and allow to cool for 15-20 minutes.

Step 4: unwrap and enjoy

I am firmly of the opinion that toaster quality is a sign of the decline of civilization as we know it. They've only gotten worse and worse at an accelerating rate over the last two decades. Even newfangled glass, laser, and uhm... whatsit radiation models make crappy toast. I have no fewer than six, yes SIX rejected appliances from different appliance Illuminati sitting in a pile just waiting to evolve into a new life form that can actually make evenly browned toast.

You'd think for a hundred bucks they could make wires that got evenly hot when you push down the lever but Noooo. There's always something. It won't let go of the toast. It shoots the toast across the room. It consistently burns the image of Godzilla into one side (actually, that would be pretty cool). It magically reads your mind and randomly adjusts itself to the perfect inverse of what brown-ness you desire. It asks too many questions when you just want tea.

Please, someone, anyone. Invent self toasting knives soon.

No bread was harmed in the making of this rant but models from Black & Decker, Braun, Kitchenaid, Breville, Procter-Silex, & Hamiliton Beach certainly were.

I have a Breville convection oven and love the thing, yes, I know it's pricey but if you cook a lot, it's worth it. It's great for reheating things as well your basic toaster needs. When my oven broke, it was a savior. I wouldn't do a full roast in it but for chops and fish, it was fine albeit a little longer than my oven.

It's good that you're paying attention to these things and trying to learn how to reduce the cost. Just a technical point - the usage of power is measured in kWh, kilowatt hours. In electricity consumption, kW is the rate of consumption of electricity. Some companies charge based your maximum kW, ie, what was the maximum instantaneous load you put on the system.

Your biggest problem is your rate. I live in Texas where electricity has been deregulated and I'm able to shop around for my electricity. I pay about $0.094/kWh plus a distribution fee and a flat monthly fee. The distribution (goes to the company that owns the wires) is just a few dollars. The flat fee is $9.99. I also get a credit of $9.99 for using over 1000 kWh in the month. A recent bill was for 1257 kWh so the cost was $123.56. That works out to about $0.0983/kWh total cost. Your usage of 1384 kWh at that rate would be $136. Clearly you're rate is way to high.

Things you can do are:

1 - Replace all your incandescent bulbs with fluorescent bulbs like this. This bulb has the equivalent output of a 60 watt bulb, but only consumes 13 watts, so less than one-fourth the electricity. There is an upfront cost in buying the bulbs, but they have a much longer life (10,000 hours) versus 1000 to 2000 for a typical incandescent bulb.

2 - Check the temperature setting on your hot water heater. Most units allow you to adjust the setting. If the hot water burns you, it's to hot.

3 - Use a small toaster oven instead of a large oven. Way less power usage.

4 - Look at you other appliances and try to figure out what's using the electricity. Use Ohm's Law which is watts = volts x amps to roughly calculate the watts. For example, a 120 volt light bulb that draws 0.5 amps uses 60 watts. An electric hot water heater is usually 240 volts at about 18 to 20 amps, so about 4500 kW.

5 - Reduce your usage during the peak rate periods if possible. As someone else pointed out, that's usually 4 pm to 8 pm. If you work during that time, turns thing off so you're using as little as possible. Or plan to be somewhere else. Run your errands, visit friends, go to the park. Don't be at home using power.

u/takingthedtrain · 3 pointsr/blogsnark

I feel like this is a classic "me" thing -- I tend to choose things that are aesthetically pleasing over the best-reviewed choice. I love the Smeg line and definitely stroked all the different appliances at a fancy store one time. So I would've ignored those reviews too.

That being said, I have a very nice toaster oven that I can recommend. The only weird thing about it is that when the toast is done, it emits a very high-pitched beeping noise. The first time it did it I thought it was the fire alarm going off!

u/vapeducator · 2 pointsr/Cooking

The Cuisinart CMW-200 combo convection microwave is a better value, has much greater capacity to rotisserie full chickens and pizza, and is more versatile as microwave as well. Has a durable stainless steel interior and thick pyrex cooking plate that rotates. Comes with a stainless steel grill rack that can be used to cook two layers of food at the same time, or turn it upside down to grill with a drip plate underneath.

Here's a photo of a roast chicken made in one. I've owned one for several years. A cheaper option is a counter top convection oven. I got one with a rotisserie like this one. Making roast chicken at home will often pay for these in savings alone, particularly if you buy whole chickens on sale for less than $1/lbs. Save the bones to roast for making stock in a pressure cooker.

Yeah, I don't know how some people live without a toaster oven. We almost never need to use our big oven for anything.

Toaster ovens are usually pretty quick, but if you want it to be even faster, get one that heats up with infrared light. This is one of the best things I ever bought (40% faster than a regular toaster oven).

u/sawbones84 · 17 pointsr/AskCulinary

Bearing in mind 97% of the meals I cook are for me and one other person, 100% yes. I have a Breville Smart Oven and use it in lieu of my oven all the time. It's large enough to cook a 14 inch pizza, a small-medium chicken, tenderloins, roasts, or a tray of veggies. It heats up fast, has a convection fan, and cooks very evenly. Worth every penny as it is the 2nd most used electric appliance in my kitchen (and was the first by a mile before I got an electric kettle). I do not own a microwave, nor do I feel like I'm ever in need of one with this thing.

I bought a spare rack and another 12x12 pan to use simultaneously with the first in order to do double duty when I need twice as many veggies, potatoes, or whatever else cooks on a rack/tray. Even though it was not designed to be used with multiple racks at once, it really works just as well on the bake setting as long as you stay mindful of tray rotation.

And I do imagine you could get away with a cheaper toaster oven as long as it is a big toaster oven.

We used this holy grail recipe for the crust. Topped it with this amazing carb-friendly Mid's Homestyle Pizza Sauce (only 4g), mozzarella, a sprinkling of parmesan, freshly ground pork sausage with fennel, basil, salt, pepper, and italian seasoning... and of course, pepperoni.

All cooked up on the greatest kitchen utility ever created, the Presto Pizzazz Pizza Cooker. Yeah, no. Slow cookers are for braises. Chicken/beef/pork/whatever parts, in a liquid, to get it nice and tender like a stew. Slow cooking is traditionally for tough cuts of meat to make them more palateable, that you can leave running unattended while you're out for the day. I never use my Presto Pizzazz Oven for actually cooking pizzas, but it is amazing for reheating them.

u/AquaTriHungerForce · 4 pointsr/Cooking

So I have one of these rotating pizza ovens. It has two heating elements. One on top for bubbly cheese, one on bottom for crispy crust. And a selector switch for top, bottom, or both. It can spin a weak frozen pizza into the dank. Especially if you grab some fresh mozzarella and some prosciutto and throw it on. Also the best reheating option I've found.

u/Kouse · 6 pointsr/BuyItForLife

America's Test Kitchen likes the Breville BOV800XL Smart Oven though it is expensive at around $250 USD.

The Hamilton Beach Set & Forget Toaster Oven with Convection Cooking was rated their best buy, and is significantly cheaper at $83 USD.

I've only used my roommate's cheapo toaster oven, and that one sucked, so I can't give any personal recommendations.

u/her_nibs · 11 pointsr/Cooking

Nooooo! Leftover fries are really good if you chop them up, throw in some bits of onion and green pepper, and fry that mess up in a pan. (I would never have known that if not for being well acquainted with the most Scottish people one could possibly meet outside of Scotland.)

You can also refresh them by stirring them around whole in a pan or putting them in the oven for a bit and then using them for poutine, where you expect a soggy fry after not too long.

Both options work well enough that if I go to a chip wagon with first-rate fries I deliberately over-order...

Alternatively: infra-red oven. I have one; it makes leftover fried foods totally edible, and does a fabulous job on frozen fried stuff. Like this.

Dad is diabetic. Mom's dinners were modified for his diet. We never had a lot of sweets/desserts. I remember a lot of ground beef (chili in CrockPot, sloppy joes from scratch-not sweet, "goulash"-Americanized hash mix with egg noodles, tacos, plain hamburgers-no buns, just homemade wheat bread Mom made), pork chops when they were cheap, and whole chickens. We had a indoor grill that had a rotisserie on it, and Mom would rotisserie the chicken or grill the burgers/chops. We'd have rice most of the time, not a lot of potatoes or noodles/pasta. Always at least one vegetable, most of the time frozen because they were freshest and cheapest. When it was harvest time, the veg came from our garden. Rarely was butter/margarine on the table.

When I was 7, Mom went back to work and I started taking over dinner duties. I tried to branch out some, made a baked crispy chicken (breaded with cracker crumbs, herbs), tried out different spices and herbs. Submitted my menus to Mom & Dad the week before for approval and grocery shopping.

I've been doing a lot of bread baking lately which ties up the oven for a solid hour right as we want other dishes cooking, so bought a standalone 'super toaster oven' as a second baking / roasting zone. I am OBSESSED with my air fryer. Everything gets cooked in it. I have this one that doubles as a toaster oven (since counter space is valuable in my apartment) and it's just incredible. Easily my favorite kitchen appliance.

u/gravityboi · 3 pointsr/shittyfoodporn

To be honest, I hardly use my oven anymore. Ever since I got one of these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00005IBXJ?pc_redir=1409137881&robot_redir=1 highly recommend it. Cooks a frozen pizza in 18 mins flat start to finish.

u/snutr · 1 pointr/Cooking

Also can be done on the grill. I can't see buying a waffle iron just for this. Pan method, grill method, oven method, stone method -- they all work just fine. If I were going to buy a special piece of equipment, I'd buy something that could do more than just waffles and pizza -- like a toaster/broiler or one with a rotisserie so you could cook a multitude of things and not just waffles, pressed sandwiches and unconventional pizza.

How about this one? It's priced pretty well too compared to the foreign models. It doesn't have a microwave though. Otherwise:

  1. If you just want to use superheated steam, buy a pressure cooker or use a spray bottle or a tray full of water with your normal oven, depending on what you're making.

  2. If you're set on importing one of those, buy a voltage converter. Looks like everything is under 1500W.

u/djdes · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

If you find one you're happy with, let me know; i'm in the market for my dad. So far these suggestions have been extreme overkill or asking why you need a BIFL toaster because "they don't break." Maybe we should try /r/goodvalue or go through some of the previous posts about this subject.

Edit: I found this top 10 toasters 2015 article

The article looked promising, and even though some of the highest rated ones had digital readouts and cost close to $200 USD, there were a couple decent no frills options that might suit our needs. I'm kind of leaning towards this Black & Decker with wide slots, that comes in a two or four slice model. The two slice is 28.48, four slice is 35.99 and it has 978 reviews, averaging 4 out of 5 stars.

u/PamBeeslysTits · 5 pointsr/Amd

I'm pretty sure they're referring to the tiny, open-air, oven-like, heated turntable used for cookies and pizzas and such...

u/GreenGemsOmally · 23 pointsr/Cooking

When I was living the bachelor life with my brother, our sister bought us a pizzaz, which was a rotating plate that had heat lamps above and below the plate for heating up pizza.

This was the best way to reheat leftover pizza or fries ever. No way I have found comes close to having it taste like it just was made again. Not even close. I need to buy it again because when I moved in with my now fiancée, we gave it to my brother since he's living by himself and doesnt cook much.

I should get one again.

u/realistic_meat · 75 pointsr/slowcooking

It's an electric roasting oven, like https://www.amazon.com/Oster-Smoker-Roaster-16-Quart-CKSTROSMK18/dp/B00AZBKTS2

They can go up to 450, which is too high for stew. You can slow cook in them if you turn the heat to 200. If you turn it any higher than that you need to keep a close eye on it because it might get above boiling temperature like OP found out.
